This document provides an overview of Fiedler's Contingency Model of leadership. The model states that a leader's effectiveness depends on both their natural leadership style (task-oriented or relationship-oriented) and the favorability of the situation, which is determined by leader-member relations, task structure, and the leader's power. It describes how to identify a leader's style using the Least-Preferred Coworker scale and how to assess situational favorability. The model then determines which style is most effective given the situation. It notes some critiques of the model including a lack of flexibility and issues with clearly identifying leadership styles.
