1. The Middle Colonies

2. New York
Founded in 1607 by the Netherlands, originally named New
Netherland.
Principal cities: Ft. Albany, New Amsterdam (New York City)
Major leader: Peter Stuyvesant. Brought order to a rowdy
colony, but grew to be hated by the colonists.
In 1664, an English Army led by the Duke of York showed up to
fight for possession of the colony, but Stuyvesant was so
hated, the colonists surrendered without a fight.

3. Pennsylvania
Founded in 1681 by William Penn, a Quaker, as a haven for
Quakers.
Major cities: Philadelphia
One of the few colonies that actually honored treaties made
with Native Americans.

4. Other Middle Colonies
New Jersey - originally part of New Netherland and New York.
Delaware - at times ruled by New Netherland, New York,
Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. Settled by Swedes,
Dutch, and English.

5. Unifying characteristics of Middle
Colonies
- Ocean-based industries (shipping, fishing, trade)
- Some large-scale agriculture in the Southern Middle Colonies
(Delaware, Pennsylvania)
- New York and Pennsylvania were both heavily involved in the
fur trade.
