Policies in Management Diversity at Denny’s
Policies in Management Diversity at Denny s
Denny s Corporation is a franchisee owned, full service restaurant chain, which operates over 1,000 restaurants through out the world (Nichols,
2012). A major instances caused to Denny s progressive enlargement in 1993 when two class action lawsuits for discrimination where filed. The
lawsuits were accusing Denny s for repeated civil rights violations, primarily against African Americans (Mor Barak, 2011). Among many
discriminatory acts, Denny s has been accused of requesting only African Americans costumers to pay for meals first when the other customers

Discrimination can appear at the time of recruitment, or at work, with regard to working conditions such as work hour, leave, pay, training; and
dismissal, termination, retirement or discrimination to customers. It is also important to not only to have clear guiding policy that indicates the
commitment of the organization to provide equal employment opportunity for anyone who applied for a job but also endeavors to implement it.
Adamson attempting to threaten to fire anyone who discriminated is a strategy on itself to implement his policy.
However, there is sill more work to do, there is sill some discrimination lawsuits that Denny s face. However, I do not think it is an indication that
Denny s new policies and practices are not working. The policies and practices are super, but I think, Denny s didn t do great job addressing the
public that it has been improving in managing diversity. The public image of Denny s is still associated with their 1990s lawsuits, where they
accusing of civil rights violations, primarily against African Americans. In addition, Denny s name is still associated with discrimination by the
fact that Denny s had only one African American franchisee and had no minority suppliers. However, that is not true now. They need to let the
public know that Denny s not only increased the number of minority employees, but also increased franchise owners to 120 and increased its
purchased from minority owned suppliers to $90

Kidd Alvarez Summary
I am reading one of Matt De La Peña top novels, I will save you. In chapter one, it takes place at the beach. It never said in the story where the

because he is always flirting with Olivia. This book is kind of set up like a diary. There no dates tho, just a title. I don t like diary books because I

William Shakespeare s Richard II
Shakespeare s history plays are not his most popular plays, but through them Shakespeare comments on a controversial topic in a Christian
England: the belief of a divinely appointed king. Under the rule of Richard II, a troubled England began to question loyalty to a flawed but rightful
and divinely appointed king. The presence of Bolingbroke, a strong, popular leader who seemed much more fit for the crown than Richard II,
furthered the country s lack of confidence in Richard II. In Shakespeare s earliest history play Richard II, Richard II presents a weak but legitimate
king who faces against the strong warrior Bolingbroke who wants the crown, even though he would be an illegitimate king. When Shakespeare
wrote Richard II, England ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many people in the play are aware of this, but Bolingbroke decides to act on it. He correctly accuses the Thomas Mowbray and Richard II of
killing the Duke of Gloucester, and Richard II has both Bolingbroke and Mowbray banished. This is confusing because Mowbray followed the
king s orders to kill the Duke of Gloucester, and it is an important point to remember when comparing Henry IV to Richard II. These early actions
of Richard II portray him as a slimy, unjust king who typically does not gain the audience s support. As the play continues, Richard II continues to
fail at being a just king. Through Bolingbroke s father, John of Gaunt, the audience discovers that Richard has spent all of England s money and
has been leasing out royal land. Gaunt dies while Bolingbroke is banished, and Richard II neglects the fact that Bolingbroke is the legal heir to
Gaunt s possessions and takes all of Gaunt s land to fund his army. The Duke of York warns Richard II about this decision and tells him that it is
illegal, but Richard II is an arrogant king who thinks he can do what he wants since he is divinely appointed. At this point in the play, Richard II is
more unjust than he was at the beginning of the play, and he has committed actions that make it easy for the audience to side with Bolingbroke. In
the beginning of the play, Bolingbroke takes the role as the voice of the people. He recognizes that Richard II is a corrupt king, and he acts upon

Agriculture In Uganda Essay
Introduction
Sustainable consumption and production is defined by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (2014) as the use of
services and related products, which respond to basic needs and bring a better quality of life while minimising the use of natural resources as well
as the emissions of waste and pollutants so as not to jeopardise the needs of further generations. Over the last 25 years many policies, strategies
and programmes that support the food and agricultural sector in Uganda have been put in place. This can be categorised into overarching national
policies and specific agricultural and rural development initiatives (FAO, 2013). The agricultural sector has the largest input into Uganda s
economy; therefore the two categories are highly inter related. Agriculture is the most important sector of the economy, employing over 66 percent
of the work force (UBoS, 2012). Approximately 80 percent of Uganda s population lives in rural areas, and 66 percent are employed in agriculture.
Agriculture accounts for 24.1 percent of GDP and 51.9 percent of exports in 2010/11. Most of Uganda s agricultural sector consists of small scale
farming (FAO, 2013). Uganda is a country endowed with a warm climate, abundant fertile land and regular rainfall, which provides one of the best
environments for agricultural production (ACORD, 2010).
Food security is the ability to provide adequate food for the household throughout the year, whether through adequate food

What Is The Role Of Segregation In African American Society
After slavery got abolished people that were white had opinions of free and voting African Americans. Few accepted them as equal and free.
Although some white Americans welcomed them, others used people s ignorance, racism, and self interest to sustain and spread racial divisions.
Hence the African Americans were treated as a second citizen and kept to a lower level. The Southern States where most black African Americans
lived started enacting literally tests, tax polls, elaborate registration systems, and all white democratic parties to exclude black voters.1 America at
this moment , said the former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1945, stands at the summit of the world. In 1950 s America is propelling
economically and has the strongest military in the world. Everywhere there were construction and development. On the other hand, Segregation or

one would believe the person. Very rarely would the colored get justice. The rarest time people with light skin, had a good family background, and

Justice In The Count Of Monte Cristo
Journeying through the world that Alexandre Dumas creates in The Count of Monte Cristo, many argue that the motive for Dantes s actions is
revenge; however, a major change in his character takes place that portrays his motive to be that of justice. The main character, Edmond Dantes,
starts off earning a successful living, but due to the jealousy of his acquaintances and the corruption of the justice system, he is falsely convicted of
treason, punishable by a life sentence. He suffers from his innocence and eventually escapes prison after fourteen years with a hunger for revenge
towards those who wronged him. This hunger later transforms into a desire to serve justice that the society s system failed in doing. In this change,
Dantes remains ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is in this stage that Dantes is a capable sailor, devoted son, faithful lover, totally honest with his relations with the world, he is not without a
certain lack of foresight and a too easy unawareness of the evil lurking in the hearts of his associates (Marinetti 262). This ignorance is what makes
him more susceptible to attacks by those around him because he only sees the good in people and is consequently unaware of their evil side. In this
way, it would seem that Dantes was responsible for his initial downfall in that if he were more aware of the existence of both good and bad in the
world, he would have been less vulnerable to the plots of his so called friends. At one point later in the story, Dantes proclaims, I am not proud, but
I am happy; and happiness blinds, I think, more than pride (Dumas 31). Dantes recognizes that his happiness and innocence is what blinded him
and made him vulnerable. In the beginning of the story, Dantes is earning his success and having his whole life planned out with his fiance
Mercedes. Dantes initial happiness coincides with his innocence, as it blinded him from the evil plots of his colleagues. It is thus concluded that
the justice system must be flawed from the fact that Dantes is suffering even though he is innocent; this corruption acts as a catalyst for Dantes s

The Royal Perogative Essay
The royal prerogative is a source of constitutional law, it derives from common law powers that have from the monarchy to the executive. The
significance in constitutional law of the prerogative is that it provides the executive with considerable power to act without following normal
parliamentary procedures. As Dicey explained, the prerogative is every act which the executive government can lawfully do without the authority
of an Act of parliament.
In constitution terms it is therefore important to explore the means by which the UK constitution secures the accountability for the exercise of
prerogative powers by the executives.
Prerogative powers are those exercisable by the crown without statutory authority. Although historically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The bill of rights of (1688) can be seen as the historical origin of the supremacy of parliament and since that point, many of the prerogative powers
have been abolished or superseded by the state. Prerogative powers, then can be described as the residual powers of the state that are not governed
by the legislation and do not require authorisation by parliament.
These include important matters of governance; the disposition of the armed forces; regulation of the armed forces: the grant of honours;
diplomatic relations and making of treaties; the appointment of the minister and the dissolution of parliament.
The queen retains the personal power to grant certain honours, to assent the Bills passed by parliament, to appoint the prime minister, and to
dissolve parliament. The powers that fall within its scope are often of crucial importance to government, and it is perhaps peculiar that the
limitations and controls upon the prerogative have not yet been formalised.
Modern prerogative powers may be defined as the legal powers inherent in Government, which do not require the approval of Parliament for their
exercise. It is traditionally been difficult to identify and assess the extent of prerogative powers within no codified list of those that exist. In
October 2009 the Government published a review of

Two Theory Of Wellbeing
The first theory of well being is the mental state theory. This theory argues that one s mental state is the sole source of their wellbeing, regardless
of the actual content of their life. A subtype of the mental state theory is welfare hedonism. This view posits that wellbeing comes from the amount
of pleasure one experiences in their life. By adding up the amount of pleasure one experiences and subtracting the pain they experience, one is able
to calculate their total wellbeing . There are different subtypes of hedonism, from psychological to ethical hedonism. Additionally, quantitative
hedonists argue that all pleasures are equally valuable, where qualitative hedonists argue that some things create a state of higher or better pleasure
than others. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This theory argues that wellbeing comes from the actualization of one s preferences in their life. These theorists argue that it does not matter what
one prefers or desires out of their life or the universe. All that matters is that these preferences or desires are satisfied. For example, if someone
desires to live in a certain country, then moving there will satisfy their preference and therefore lead to individual well being. Preference theorists
are categorized into ideal preference theorists and actual preference theorists. Ideal theorists differentiate one s current desires with their ideal
ones, or the desires they would have in a perfect universe Actual preference theorists believe that whether or not one s desires are irrational,
misinformed, or harmful is irrelevant. These theorists argue that no matter what, actualization leads to

With the goal of ensuring that all preschools in California offer highquality programs, the California Department of Education collaborated with
leading early childhood educators, researchers, advocates, and parents to develop Volume 2 of the preschool learning foundations. The foundations
outline key knowledge and skills that most children can achieve when provided with the kinds of interactions, instruction, and environments
shown by research to promote early learning and development. Volume 2 focuses on three domains: visual and performing arts, physical
development, and health. These domains often receive less attention than some of the other domains, but they are equally important for preschool
children s overall learning and development. As research that is summarized in this volume indicates, physical v vi exercise and healthy routines
and nutritional choices set the stage for lifelong healthy habits. The recent NAEYC report underscores the need for children to play outside, use
their large muscles, and engage in vigorous physical activities every day. Of course, the visual and performing arts fuel both preschool children s
imaginative play and creativity and also promote learning in all domains, including physical skill development, cognitive development, and social
emotional development. I believe that these foundations will help guide and support all California preschools in providing developmentally

What Is The Tone Of The Visionary By Emily Bronte
The Visionary by Emily Bronte is a poem about the future, as indicated by its title, and focuses on the feelings of the speaker such as the concern
of safety and also the feelings of isolation and loneliness. The dilemmas faced by the speaker are explored through contrasts as well as imagery
and structure to convey a tone of indecision but ambition throughout the poem. Bronte uses contrasts in order to portray the polarised feelings
between the inside of the house, where the speaker feels safe, and the hostility faced outside. In the first line the house is personified and said to be
silent which evokes imagery of serenity and peace, whereas outside she is dreading every breeze ; the determiner every implying the relentlessness

The use of a dramatic monologue gives poem a more conversational and personal tone, much like the reader entering the speaker s own thoughts.
Through this narrative, the speaker focuses on her future lover whom she describes as an angel (that) night tracks the waste of frozen snow . The
supernatural and religious imagery presents the idea of the speaker being almost ephemeral and omnibenevolent, and in turn idealising them. This
interpretation can be further supported through the reference of the little lamp being the wanderer s guiding star , with the star in particular being
an object which is unreachable. The diminutive of little to describe the lamp has connotations of being vulnerable which is contrasted from the
strong rays that she sees. This may be symbolic of the disproportional amount of hope and passion that she puts on this little lamp . The lover may
also be likened to the snow, with its white colour which is has connotations of being pure the colour in which angels are often depicted. However,
the setting of the frozen snow further adds to the idealizing of the lover at it shows his determination to track through the bleak environment. More
supernatural references are to describe the lover in later stanzas such as visitant of air and Strange Power which implies that

BANK CAPITAL MANAGEMENT CAPITAL ADEQUACY FRAMEWORK
INTRODUCTION
Bank capital is often defined in tiers or categories that include shareholders equity, retained earnings, reserves, hybrid capital instruments, and
subordinated term debt. Capital ratios are commonly measured as a percent of bank assets or risk weighted bank assets.
Bank capital serves as an important cushion against unexpected losses. It creates a strong ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Banks list their capital adequacy ratios in their financial reports. The CAR is important to shareholders because it is an important measure of the
financial soundness of a bank.
Two types of capital are measured with the CAR. The first, tier 1 capital, can absorb a reasonable amount of loss without forcing the bank to
cease its trading. The second type, tier 2 capital, can sustain loss in the event of liquidation. Tier 2 capital provides less protection to its depositors.
Because of the nature of risk under which banks operate, capital regulations require banks to maintain a minimum level of equity per loans and
other assets. This required minimum is designed for protection, allowing banks to sustain unanticipated losses. The minimum is also designed to
offer depositors confidence in the security of their deposits given the asymmetric information.
An individual depositor cannot know if a bank has taken risks beyond what it can absorb.
Thus, depositors receive a level of assurance from shareholders equity, along with regulations, audits and credit ratings.
The amount of equity a bank receives from shareholders sets the limit on the value of deposits it can attract. This also limits the extent to which the
bank can lend money. If a bank sustains large losses through credit or trading, eroding the bank s net worth, this causes a decreased fund base
through which a bank can offer loans.
The CAR provides

Age Of New Imperialism Analysis
During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Europe was experiencing an Age of Discovery, led by the spanish. During this time, nations in Europe
were mostly ruled by absolute monarchs, and the lower classes were repressed. Furthermore, Europe was in constant religious warfare, as
Protestantism had recently arose and created divisions in once united territories. Centuries later, Europe once again began reaching for
international control. This resurgence of exploration is known as the Age of New Imperialism. The European nations during the Age of New

During the Age of Discovery, most nations had absolute monarchs, and thus the glory received from expeditions abroad would directly go to the
monarch, rather than to the nation itself. This is evidenced by the extravagant palaces of Versailles and el Escorial, which were constructed using
the profits from the Age of Discovery. Furthermore, many European nations had impoverished lower classes, that only suffered while the
extravagant monarchs indulged in the new income from overseas trade. In contrast, during the nineteenth century and the Age of New Imperialism,
the glory received from conquest would increase the nationalism of the entire country. This patriotic fervor gripped nations and was the cause of
both unification and warfare. Specifically, this nationalism and glory was used by King Charles X of France who gained more power by increasing
the patriotism of his people. Despite his absolutist rule, the people of France did not rebel, as they were proud of their nation s African expansion.
In conclusion, the motivation of glory while expanding is similar in both of the ages of international growth of European

Anxiety Disorder And Anxiety Disorders
A feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. This is the definition for
anxiety from a text book stand point. Someone that has or has experienced anxiety would describe it differently. An anxiety problem can be
developed through genetics, past life events, and personality. Anxiety can be broken down into six different branches: generalized anxiety disorder,
panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobia, post traumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety disorder. People with generalized anxiety

satisfied, thus all will seem to fall down (http://barbaricpoetries. blogspot.com/2012/04/and it all falls down.html). The catchy melody given in the

because it would be a backup plan if they didn t do anything else with their career. If plan A doesn t work, you always have plan B to back you up

Comparing Paganism And Wicca Religion
Paganism and Wicca are full of many traditions and simple culture. Though the two may be different religions they correlate with each other.
Wicca is in a way based off the pagan religion and is very open and easy to practice if you practice another religion. Wicca celebrates the seasons
and has many holidays. Bothe Wicca and Paganism celebrate what s around us and are very interesting religions sense they have so much variety
and importance as to how most people now celebrate holidays.
Paganism and/or Wicca and witchcraft are very free and loose religions and have many traditions. What I mean by free and loose is that they allow

three to thirteen people. And many wiccans believe strongly in karma, whatever you put your energy into, negative or positive it will come back to

In a way, the concept of Christmas came from Wicca and Pagan traditions, and the concept of Halloween too. Pagans decided that thaw winter

The Invisible Empire Of The South
Chris Folsom December 29, 2014 Facing History: KKK Persecutions The Invisible Empire of the South The practice of slavery has played a
prominent role in American history and society. As early as 1619, our Colonial ancestors had used African slaves as a method of more efficiently
harvesting crops and making a profit . The first North American colony to practice slavery was Jamestown, Virginia . John Rolfe introduced
tobacco, a notoriously difficult crop to harvest, to the Virginia colony . The African workforce allowed the colony to more effectively harvest their
tobacco plants and prosper . Slavery would remain a common practice in North America throughout the next three centuries . While the Northern
states benefited from the advantages of a versatile, diverse economy, the Southern region remained primarily agrarian . Therefore, the necessity of
slavery in the country varied disparately in the two continental regions. The South and their plantation economy depended upon slavery for a work
force while the Northern economy would easily continue to flourish with its abolition. Spearheaded by William Lloyd Garrison, former slave
Frederick Douglas, and Harriet Tubman, the mid 19th century abolition movement and the desire to abolish peculiar institution would eventually
divide the nation . A Balkan powder keg of our own, pro/anti slavery legislation, debates and compromises set the scene for regional division .

Insulin Resistance In Horses
Each year about 340 horses die due to effects of insulin resistance. That is almost half the deaths caused by horse racing. If a horse or pony
suffering from Insulin Resistance and they eat high sugar feed, and eat normal, unsoaked hay the large increase in sugar may cause death or lead to
serious life threatening conditions. In horses that don t suffer from Insulin Resistance and Cushing s it wouldn t be as great a concern if they got
out and ate feed and hay, but thus act becomes life threatening and fatal for horses and ponies suffering from Insulin Resistance and Cushing s.
Insulin Resistance, Cushings, and Endocrinopathic Laminitis are all very complex diseases that many experts are still gaining an understanding
for. Glucose, insulin, and cortisol are major factors not only in Insulin Resistance (IR) and Cushings (PPID) as individual diseases, but they also
serve to link the two diseases to Endocrinopathic Laminitis in addition to each other. Insulin Resistance and ... Show more content on

The elevated levels of cortisol that occur as a result of PPID are believed to contribute to the insensitivity of stimulation and the resistance of
laminitis. When the cortisol is secreted by the pituitary gland it interferes with the lamellar perfusing, causing a vasoconstrictive response in the
equine digital arteries to the catecholamines. Also a cortisol excess results in protein catabolism in the skin, connective tissue, bone and skeletal
muscle, impaired wound healing, muscle atrophy derived data are pointing to the fact that inflammation leads a pivotal role in laminitis (Johnson).
Some experts also believe that stress can lead to a horse becoming laminitic because of the increased cortisol secretion that occurs due to stress.
Since Laminitis is so incredibly painful for the horses and ponies affected it causes them to experience extreme stress, which in turn causes a
dramatic spike in cortisol levels

Olmec Culture Research Paper
The Olmec culture is one of the oldest cultures in Mesoamerica. The Olmecs were known as one of the oldest cultures, as well as, the mother
culture of mesoamerican cultures and were estimated to be around from 1000 to 500 BC. The name Olmec comes from the Mexica cultures that
came after. It was not the name that the people of this culture named themselves, the name they called themselves has been lost through history.
The Olmec culture was the culture that produced rubber, and had great workmanship in which they were able to create jade masks, celts,
ornaments and tools using different materials such as gold. This culture was able to develop and stay alive througout the ages for so long due to the
fertility of their land which came from their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Olmec mask is not the size of a present day human face, but rather much smaller, and could be compared to the size of the palm of an adults
hand. The color is a deep green with a tint of grey, which has come from the aging of the stone. While there is evidence of cremation in the
mesoamerican cultures, the color of this mask proves that the mask was not on the body during the cremation process, but rather after the ashes
were put into the body bundle. In order to create these masks, the olmecs would carve the faces into the rock that would be used as the mask. To
create the mouth, eyes and other deep incised areas, they used a technique in which they would attach a string to two pieces of wood and move in a
saw like motion in order to heat and shape the stone. There is no negative space evident in the masks such as no holes for the eyes, nose, or mouth,
only in the earlobes for attachment to the corpse bundle. When analyzing the iconography of the Olmec mask, the viewer must question the
symbolic meaning and the use of conventionalized imagery. Although the symbolic meaning was not explicitly stated in any of the ancient
codecies or texts, it is assumed that the mask was a way to give the deciesed a face for what could be the afterlife, or simply to identify the bundle.
On the other hand, the repeated use of certain aspects in the mask such as the closed, squinting

The Ethical Issues Of Business
Introduction: In this essay, I will discuss three sections of business among many which hold ethical issues. Those sections are advertising, product
liability, and leadership ethics. Within the three sections, I will identify and briefly discuss three specific ethical issues. I will then choose one
ethical issue and go into the detail about how ABC Widgets Inc. will implement a policy on how to avoid the ethical issue. Advertising:
Advertising has many ethical issues; however, I will focus on integrity, bribery, and manipulation. Integrity is a question of motives. It questions
the purpose behind what is being advertised and the character of the company/person who is supporting it. You need your audience s trust if you
want them to buy your products; there has to be a relationship. However, it is not integrity alone but integrity intertwined with persuasion and
character. An example of this is the famous Jack Bennett case of 1997. Jack pulled in many individuals as well as businesses with his persuasion
and enticed them to join the cause to help others. However, his audience misjudged his character. Jack Bennett s company, New Era Philanthropy,
promised to match donations with money from anonymous donors when he simply did not have anonymous donors. He did this to help charities
yet he lied to his faithful and inspired customers. Lack of integrity is a big issue in advertising. Winston Churchill used the skill of woo, which is
to win others over. This skill is the same

Genetically Engineered Children Research Paper
Genetically Engineered Children
My personal opinion on genetically engineered children is that there should be research done to aid the development of it, but there should be a
limit. The prescreening of embryos and possible changing of genes so a child doesn t have a fatal illness is a tool that we should be able to use in
the time of need. The passing on of fatal genes could cease with technology like this, and that is where the research should be going, not to
determining specific traits of a child. The amazing part of being a human is being complex and diverse and not knowing how your child will be
compared to you. To take away the variation is to take away the amazement of life. If you can pick how smart, tall, and athletic your child will be

Many believe the tampering with children in vitro is wrong entirely; saying God s work or fate is solely in control of these thing; but that isn t
valid in my opinion. When you look at the science behind creating life there is so much left up to simply what chromosomes pair with each other
that is what makes up your child. To just discredit any type of aid that could come to a family whose bloodline passes on fatal traits is negligence
to me. On the other hand, there is a large group of people who don t focus on the medical benefits of this type of research but simply on the
aesthetics of their unborn child, which seems miniscule and unimportant when you re dealing with life threatening diseases being passed on, but is
an over stepping of boundaries this research could lead to. There is no evident answer to whether genetically engineered children are immoral or
not, but I believe there is a line that needs to be drawn by who is still to be determined, but the research should still be done in order to get to a

The Effects of Advertising on Teens
The effects of 2 People see advertisements all around the globe that attempt to lure consumers to buy products. Advertisements are placed in
newspapers, magazines, schools, and on billboards everywhere. According to marketing consultants Stan Rapp and Tom Collins, on a typical day,
an average American sees over 5,000 advertisements a day (Gay, 1992). Many questions arise about these advertisements, such as Is advertising
deceptive? Does it create or perpetuate stereotypes? Does it create conformity? Does it create insecurity in order to sell goods? Does it cause
people to buy things that they really don t need? (Alexander Hanson, 1993, p. 240). Advertisers use specific methods to target teen consumers, but
these methods are not always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, beer commercials often show a man after a hard day s work enjoying an ice cold beer to relax him. They also argue that ads give
people the impression that products can give them talent. Take athletics, for example. Nike ads are accused of implying that their shoes will give a
consumer athletic ability. Michael Jordan is shown in a television commercial dunking a basketball, wearing a new style of Nike shoes.
Consequently, kids are going to want the same pair to be like Mike (Wolf, 1998, n.p.). On the other hand, advertising agencies say that they just
give the consumers up to date information. They show change in their ads because they know that is what consumers want and to fulfill the needs
of the general public, change. Thus, persuasive strategies are considered techniques used by advertisers to get consumers to buy. Teenagers have
become top consumers in today s society, so advertisers have focused on getting their business. According to Simmons Market Research Bureau of
New York City, teens bought 25% of all movie tickets and 27% of all videos, totaling $6.6 billion. In 1998, teens spent $1.5 billion on jeans,
almost twice as much as in 1990, and $3 billion on sneakers, almost four times more than the amount spent in 1997 (Tulley, 1994). Another reason
teens are being targeted is the fact that there are many more teens in America today than the past Generation X. The current number is even
expected to grow in the next decade,

Great Lakes Water Quality Essay
Water quality in the Great Lakes is something that has been a criticall issue in the Great Lakes Region for a number of years. Water quality can be
anything that affects the benefits humans derives from water. It can include drinking water, food, recreation, and any other use of water that is
possible. Many invasive species including zebra mussels and Asian carp pose a great threat to the water quality of the Great Lakes. The ecosystem
and industry relying on the Great Lakes are also affected by this invasion. I feel that the best way to stop invasive species from coming into the
Great Lakes is to prevent the problem from happening before it already has.
Zebra Mussels are small mussels originally found in Russia, but were introduced into the Great Lakes in 1988. Zebra Mussels have spread
throughout every Great Lake, and are prominent in over 100 inland lakes (Home). Ships traveling up the Erie Canal transported the zebra mussel
from European waters into the Great Lakes. The zebra mussel quickly spread from Lake Erie to the other Great Lakes. The invading species began
to attach itself to almost every solid thing in the Great Lakes. These can stick to boats, damage structures such as docks and piers, and they can
clog water intake pipes, which are used for drinking and industrial use. Invasive species like the zebra ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Roaring Twenties was a period in 20th century America in which major cities throughout the nation would experience significant cultural
extravagance and for some, decadence. New York, in particular, would exemplify this term with its streets filled with people of startling diversity
and class, the bold emergence of the flapper lifestyle in young women, and the sensual swings of Jazz. However, as a direct result of such excess,
all the refuse would be funneled into places like the Corona Ash Dump situated in the Queens. This duality of a prosperous society and a

situation is led off of a coin flip which decides what team gets the football first.
There are some similarities about the stadiums which host the team who is playing another(away) team. Most stadiums have a hall of fame or a
historic piece of history which stands today. Many of these stadiums are very expensive and many are asking why they have the stadiums in the

No peace can last, or ought to last, which does not recognize and accept the principle that governments derive all their just powers from the

involve the disagreement with US foreign policy. In a survey of 2,620 men and women living in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, and Saudi

Horace Miner writes that the Nacirema people can be described as magic ridden people. They have very many burdens they have imposed unto
themselves; for example, the excretory rituals. These are rituals that puts one ethnic group very distinct as compared to others, and by and large, it
makes them consolidate their beliefs and activities. In the eyes of modern culture, the Nacirema culture presents a ?crazy scenario. ? However, the
Nacirema people as explained in the article are not ready to abandon or put down the ?perceived burdens. ? They are ready to continue with them.
In themselves, they value what they do as superior and something which cannot be interfered with by other cultures.
Most evident in this article and the explanations given by the author is social solidarity. The Nacirema people as explained in the article are unique
people, who practice and carry out their activities with total disregard of what other cultures view them. For example, the excretory rituals are
bound to be viewed by others as crazy, but to them, these are cultures, which make them strong. They are magic ridden people. The irrelevance of
the magic in this community puts them apart from ?civilization ? but to them, they have to remain in solidarity. This social solidarity is important
only to the Nacirema people, and this is because it is bound to be viewed by others as representing backwardness.

The State Of Michig A Fascinating Area
The state of Michigan is a fascinating area. From its mitten like shape, to its historical background, to the presence of the Great Lakes, Michigan
has a story unlike any others. One very important part of Michigan s story is how water has shaped the land making up the state. Seeing as the
Great Lakes surround Michigan, it is obvious that the hydrologic system plays a great role in the water supply and the ecosystem of the Great
Lakes. The hydrologic cycle includes evaporation, condensation, precipitation, groundwater, transpiration and runoff, all of which keep the Great
Lakes functioning year after year. The University Corporation of Atmospheric Research developed an image to simply explain the hydrologic
cycle as well as graphs explaining how each of the elements of the hydrologic cycle affects The Great Lakes on a monthly basis (located below).
The hydrologic cycle keeps the Great Lakes up and running. Without it, Michigan would not have the inhabitants it does today. The abundant
supply of water allows a vast array of wildlife to live in Michigan, and made it a desirable place for early settlers to inhabit. However, the Great
Lakes did not just appear out of thin air. There is a long history of how the Great Lakes came to be.
The long history of the formation of the Great Lakes and Michigan start with the impact of glaciers. Throughout history, there have been four
major periods where glaciers moved across Michigan, shaping and forming the land. Every time a glacier

The Executive Branch Analysis
Time has passed since the branches of government were created, and so have the everlasting needs of the expanding United States. These three
branches consist of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. Each with balanced power impacts every American citizen s life and needs. Each
significant branch of the government addresses social, economic, and political matters which influences the lives of a society with changing needs.
The Executive Branch has expanded to attend to the needs of the country. When viewing the Executive Branch years ago, not only did the needs
shift over time, but so did the government. Looking at the divisions in The Cabinet, more departments have been created for issues within the
United States since the beginning. This is because of the flourishing amount of needs from society now, and the advancements over the years.
Many specific departments have sprouted to advise the President. This shows how the Executive Branch addresses the needs of the United States.

They both have their place in modern media, and they both have their own attributes. In order to fully understand the magnitude of how much of a
gap in popularity there is between these two different techniques in animating there must be clear statistics that show proof how these movies fair
in the box offices. For instance, take a look at Disney s Princess and the Frog which was a traditionally animated film. It had done well when it
came to what movie critics had to say about it, however, it failed in comparison to Pixar at the box office with a return of only $267million (Child

(Child n.p). Take these two movies and compare them to Bolt (2009) and Tangled (2010) which grossed $310million and $590million individually
(Child n.p). That doesn t necessarily make Princess and the Frog and Winnie the Pooh bad movies; critics seemed to think they were just fine.
However there is a clear gap between the money made by the CGI films and the hand drawn films. Furthermore, the matter of whether or not they
were both made by different companies is of the question seeing as how all four films were produced by Disney. Traditional animation, using hand

Bright Field Brightfield magnifying instruments are the established magnifying lens in which the example is lit up from the back and the picture is
framed because of the retaining properties of the imaged objects. Brightfield light has been a standout amongst the most generally utilized
perception modes as a part of optical microscopy for as long as 300 years. The system is most appropriate for use with settled, recolored examples
or different sorts of tests that normally ingest critical measures of noticeable light. Pictures created with brightfield brightening seem dim and/or

Confocal Microscope
A Confocal magnifying lens is one kind of 3D Fluorescence Microscope in which determination is expanded by dismissing out of concentrate

Give a practical reason why it would be hard to label any food as Fat Free if it had to have zero fat in it? For a product to be fat free, it must
contain less than 0.5g of fat per serving. This is all very well if we eat the stated serving size of that food, say one cookie. But if we consume more
than a serving of that food, it ceases to be fat free. All those fractions of a gram will count towards your daily fat intake. One final word of caution:
what some fat free products lack in fat, they make up for in sugars. So fat free doesn t mean calorie free.

paper will look at the mistakes that people make in formulating a 360 degree feedback and appropriate use of the 360 degree performance

consider the period that they being evaluated. Wilson, 2014, suggests that the participants must undergo training to have a credible 360 degree test.
In the above scenario, there might be cases of biases among the top official; some feel that they do not want to fail each other. Though the
management has identified that there are discrepancies in the leadership skills the results state otherwise. Therefore, such situations can occur in
this type of test because of people might also offer comments that favour all the supervisors.
Scenario 3
The multi rater feedback is a tool that people to acquire rich, accurate perspective on how others see the management practices, effectiveness and
interpersonal designs (Taylor, Chappelow, Fleenor, 2008). It is meant for performance. Int the above scenario, the firm s primary objective was to
improve the competitiveness, that decision to undertake the 360 degree feedback just because they come to a realization that leadership skills and

Ryanair and easyJet Case Study
I.INTRODUCTIONThis report outlines the analysis of two low cost airlines performance in Europe, namely easyJet PLC and Ryanair Hldgs
during their financial year between 2006 and 2008. It examines the companies portfolio, future prospects and competitors to analyse the threats
and opportunities facing their business. In conclusion, there is a recommendation whether to invest on easyJet and/or Ryanair s shares.
II.FINANCIAL AND NON FINANCIAL RATIO ANALYSISIn terms of the completed financial analysis, there are several findings as

Current and quick ratios tended to stay at the same level as both companies do not hold any psychical production stocks. An average current and
quick ratio of 2.02 for the last three years indicates that Ryanair appeared to be more capable of covering and repaying its short term debts and
obligations. Overall, both companies did not experience any problems in terms of liquidity because their current assets were able to cover the
current liabilities.
Financing Ratios show how companies finance their business whether from shareholders funds or debts. (Atrill McLaney, 2008)Gearing
RatioFigure 8. Gearing RatiosRyanair showed a higher leveraging on its balance sheet, 46.48% on average, than easyJet, 39.95%. It is partly
because the borrowed money was mainly used in investing new aircrafts or launch new range of routes. This led to higher returns to shareholders
equity in Ryanair rather than in easyJet.
Interest Cover RatioFigure 9. Interest Cover RatiosFrom the figures above, Ryanair was able to generate high operating profits to cover its interest
expenses as can be seen by the high interest coverage ratio on average of 5.43. However, the interest cover ratio of easyJet slid to only 2.68, which
was particularly caused by a dramatic fall in the profit for the year from £ 152.3 million to £ 83.2 million.
Investment Ratios assist investors in assessing their return on the made investment. (Atrill McLaney,

Corporal Punishment with Respect to the Private and Public...
1 Introduction
Corporal punishment is the unlawful intentional act of causing harm by physically inflicting punishment on the body of an offender or severely
criticising the offender. There is a distinction in common law between corporal punishment in the public sphere and in the private sphere.
Corporal punishment on children in the private sphere is administered by parents. It is legally accepted in South Africa, provided that the
requirements are met.
The public sphere s position is much different in the sense that the government along with all schools have no authority to physically discipline
school children anymore. Authority to exercise corporal punishment often leads to abuse of power, child abuse and feelings of superiority. All ...

Rex v Janke Janke ( Janke ) clarifies the rights parents have when corporally punishing their children with the intention of teaching them a
valuable lesson. The requirements for this defence are for it to be moderate and reasonable. The reasonable requirement refers to the child having
to wrongfully do something or threaten to do so. The moderate requirement states that the punishment must be in proportion to the age, build,
health and gender of the child. Corporal punishment by parental authority can only succeed as a defence if it meets these requirements, as well as
having the intention to discipline or educate the child.
3 1 Arguments against parent s right of chastisement
The harm inflicted on a child when punishing him/her, violates the human rights of the child, which states that every child should be protected
from abuse or degradation in section 28(d) of the Constitution. Another point of inconsistency the legalisation of corporal punishment in the
private sphere, is set out in section 39(3) of the Constitution that states: The Bill of rights does not deny the existence of any other rights or
freedoms that are recognised or conferred by common law, customary law or legislation, to the extent that they are consistent with the Bill . The
current position of the private sphere is not in correspondence with the public sphere, even though they both deal with corporal punishment.

In the quot;Custom House, quot; written as an introduction to The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne gives an autobiographical description of his life and
times. The detailed descriptions of the scenes and people not only prepare the reader for the author s style, but also aim at recreating the author s
past. The preface concentrates on the author s period of service at the Custom House during which time he came into contact with several people
and had the opportunity to study human behavior. The description of his co employees and others shows the author s deft hand at characterization,
which is revealed during the novel. Further, the preface serves the purpose of giving a background to the novel and introduces America s

CHAPTER 1: The Prison Door
The first chapter gives a description of the dark and gloomy nature of the prison that was established in the quot;vicinity of Cornhill quot; by the
early settlers. The prison is described as an quot;ugly edifice quot; and quot;black flower of civilized society quot;. Weeds grow in front of the
gloomy structure, where a group of Puritans, dressed normally in their dull clothing, has gathered. The only positive image in the whole setting is a
single rosebush that stands beside the weeds. It foreshadows that there will be some brightness amidst this quot;tale of human frailty and sorrow.
quot;
Notes
The purpose of this opening chapter is to set the scene for the novel in seventeenth century
Boston. A crowd of Puritans has gathered at the prison and as always, they wear quot;sad colored quot; clothing. The description of the dark and
gloomy prison sets the mood for the entire story and foreshadows the situations of Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale. She is outwardly
quot;imprisoned quot; for her sin through her alienation and isolation; he is inwardly quot;imprisoned quot; by his mental anguish and
deterioration. Hawthorne obviously chooses to begin his

Techniques Used in Morris Glietzman s Boy Overboard Essay
In Morris Glietzmans heart breaking but remarkable book Boy Overboard, he shows how the corrupt government in Afghanistan has forced out
many of its inhabitants making them try to leave the country by avoiding the government and staying in refugee camps until they can leave is in
the country. Morris Glietzman shows the pressure put on the families in Afghanistan through similes, metaphors, and humour. The Afghanistan
government or the Taliban as they are called, are very harsh and unfair with the laws that are in place in Afghanistan and are not nice to the
families in the country. Woman are treated very unfairly in Afghanistan for minor crimes, and are whipped or killed for a crime such as showing

(Page 2). This explains to the reader of the story that Jamal had kicked the ball very hard and fast through the air. The ball could be referred to look
like a scud missile flying through the air. Morris Glietzman has said like a scud missile because a scud missile travels at high speed. Morris
Glietzman uses these similes in accordance with the story to make the reader feel that the object being described in the simile is alive when it
maybe non living. Morris Glietzman uses similes in his books to help the reader understand how the object or person is without plainly saying that
the ball was flying fast trough the air but like a scud missile.
Metaphors are also used throughout Boy Overboard to make the reader not picture the object or person being like another but to picture the object
or person as being another. The example of a clear metaphor in I have found in the story by Morris Glietzman is ?Its Bibi. She comes towards me,
eyes as big as stadium flood lights? (Page 44). This sentence Morris Glietzman has written was used to show the reader that Bibi?s eyes were
looked extremely large and bright or as though they were like stadium flood lights. Stadium flood lights are very large and bright and much
brighter that a regular bulb. A bulb is used in comparison with a stadium flood light to show that bibi?s eyes were larger than normal. Morris
Glietzman uses the metaphorical language in Boy Overboard to show how the people in

Of Mice And Men Quotes About Friendship
Friendship is a bond between two people. Friendship is being by your friend s side when you are needed and when you are not. To be a friend, you
have to be trustworthy so your friend can tell you anything. You have to be honest and have to be able to tell your friend the truth no matter the
consequences. You have to be kind and understanding so you can put yourself in your friend s shoes to understand their situation. Most
importantly, you have to be there for your friend, which means protecting them, taking care of them, supporting them, and encouraging them.
Being trustworthy, honest, kind, understanding, and dependable are characteristics of being a good friend. I think George is a good friend to

he understands that Lennie wouldn t be able to take care of himself on his own. Even after saying Lennie is a handful, George loves and protects

The Rise Of The Welfare State
The Rise of the Welfare State
In America today, just over ten million people are on unemployment insurance, one hundred and ten million people are on welfare, and the total
government spending annually is around one hundred and thirty billion dollars (Welfare Statistics). The welfare state is a political system based on
the proposition that the government has the individual responsibility to ensure that the minimum standard of living is met for all citizens.
Specifically, in the matters of health care, public education, employment, and social security, the welfare state assumes all responsibility.
According to John Rawls, In a just society the liberties of equal citizenship are taken as settled; the rights secured by justice are not subject to
political bargaining or to the calculus of social interests. The only thing that permits us to acquiesce in an erroneous theory is the lack of a better
one; analogously, an injustice is tolerable only when it is necessary to avoid an even greater injustice (Rawls). In the 1840s, Otto Von Bismarck,
the first Chancellor of Germany, was the father of the modern welfare state. He built the program to win over the support of the working middle
class in Germany and ultimately reduce the outflow of immigrants to the U.S., where welfare did not exist (Welfare State). In the United States,
not all companies provided workers with benefits, thus the workers appealed to the government, giving rise to the first form of welfare capitalism.

William Shakespeare s Richard II Shakespeare s history plays are not his most popular plays, but through them Shakespeare comments on a controversial topic in a Christian England: the belief of a divinely appointed king. Under the rule of Richard II, a troubled England began to question loyalty to a flawed but rightful and divinely appointed king. The presence of Bolingbroke, a strong, popular leader who seemed much more fit for the crown than Richard II, furthered the country s lack of confidence in Richard II. In Shakespeare s earliest history play Richard II, Richard II presents a weak but legitimate king who faces against the strong warrior Bolingbroke who wants the crown, even though he would be an illegitimate king. He correctly accuses the Thomas Mowbray and Richard II of killing the Duke of Gloucester, and Richard II has both Bolingbroke and Mowbray banished. This is confusing because Mowbray followed the king s orders to kill the Duke of Gloucester, and it is an important point to remember when comparing Henry IV to Richard II. These early actions of Richard II portray him as a slimy, unjust king who typically does not gain the audience s support. As the play continues, Richard II continues to fail at being a just king. Through Bolingbroke s father, John of Gaunt, the audience discovers that Richard has spent all of England s money and has been leasing out royal land. Gaunt dies while Bolingbroke is banished, and Richard II neglects the fact that Bolingbroke is the legal heir to Gaunt s possessions and takes all of Gaunt s land to fund his army. The Duke of York warns Richard II about this decision and tells him that it is illegal, but Richard II is an arrogant king who thinks he can do what he wants since he is divinely appointed. At this point in the play, Richard II is more unjust than he was at the beginning of the play, and he has committed actions that make it easy for the audience to side with Bolingbroke. Agriculture In Uganda Essay Introduction Sustainable consumption and production is defined by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (2014) as the use of services and related products, which respond to basic needs and bring a better quality of life while minimising the use of natural resources as well as the emissions of waste and pollutants so as not to jeopardise the needs of further generations. Over the last 25 years many policies, strategies and programmes that support the food and agricultural sector in Uganda have been put in place. This can be categorised into overarching national policies and specific agricultural and rural development initiatives (FAO, 2013). The agricultural sector has the largest input into Uganda s economy; therefore the two categories are highly inter related. Agriculture is the most important sector of the economy, employing over 66 percent of the work force (UBoS, 2012). Approximately 80 percent of Uganda s population lives in rural areas, and 66 percent are employed in agriculture. Agriculture accounts for 24.1 percent of GDP and 51.9 percent of exports in 2010/11. Most of Uganda s agricultural sector consists of small scale farming (FAO, 2013). It is in this stage that Dantes is a capable sailor, devoted son, faithful lover, totally honest with his relations with the world, he is not without a certain lack of foresight and a too easy unawareness of the evil lurking in the hearts of his associates (Marinetti 262). This ignorance is what makes him more susceptible to attacks by those around him because he only sees the good in people and is consequently unaware of their evil side. In this way, it would seem that Dantes was responsible for his initial downfall in that if he were more aware of the existence of both good and bad in the world, he would have been less vulnerable to the plots of his so called friends. At one point later in the story, Dantes proclaims, I am not proud, but I am happy; and happiness blinds, I think, more than pride (Dumas 31). Dantes recognizes that his happiness and innocence is what blinded him and made him vulnerable. In the beginning of the story, Dantes is earning his success and having his whole life planned out with his fiance Mercedes. Dantes initial happiness coincides with his innocence, as it blinded him from the evil plots of his colleagues. The significance in constitutional law of the prerogative is that it provides the executive with considerable power to act without following normal parliamentary procedures. As Dicey explained, the prerogative is every act which the executive government can lawfully do without the authority of an Act of parliament. These include important matters of governance; the disposition of the armed forces; regulation of the armed forces: the grant of honours; diplomatic relations and making of treaties; the appointment of the minister and the dissolution of parliament. The queen retains the personal power to grant certain honours, to assent the Bills passed by parliament, to appoint the prime minister, and to dissolve parliament. The powers that fall within its scope are often of crucial importance to government, and it is perhaps peculiar that the limitations and controls upon the prerogative have not yet been formalised. The supernatural and religious imagery presents the idea of the speaker being almost ephemeral and omnibenevolent, and in turn idealising them. This interpretation can be further supported through the reference of the little lamp being the wanderer s guiding star , with the star in particular being an object which is unreachable. The diminutive of little to describe the lamp has connotations of being vulnerable which is contrasted from the strong rays that she sees. This may be symbolic of the disproportional amount of hope and passion that she puts on this little lamp . Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Banks list their capital adequacy ratios in their financial reports. The CAR is important to shareholders because it is an important measure of the financial soundness of a bank. Two types of capital are measured with the CAR. The first, tier 1 capital, can absorb a reasonable amount of loss without forcing the bank to cease its trading. The second type, tier 2 capital, can sustain loss in the event of liquidation. Tier 2 capital provides less protection to its depositors. Because of the nature of risk under which banks operate, capital regulations require banks to maintain a minimum level of equity per loans and other assets. This required minimum is designed for protection, allowing banks to sustain unanticipated losses. The minimum is also designed to offer depositors confidence in the security of their deposits given the asymmetric information. This also limits the extent to which the bank can lend money. If a bank sustains large losses through credit or trading, eroding the bank s net worth, this causes a decreased fund base through which a bank can offer loans. The CAR provides ... • 22. The Invisible Empire Of The South Chris Folsom December 29, 2014 Facing History: KKK Persecutions The Invisible Empire of the South The practice of slavery has played a prominent role in American history and society. As early as 1619, our Colonial ancestors had used African slaves as a method of more efficiently harvesting crops and making a profit . The first North American colony to practice slavery was Jamestown, Virginia . John Rolfe introduced tobacco, a notoriously difficult crop to harvest, to the Virginia colony . The African workforce allowed the colony to more effectively harvest their tobacco plants and prosper . Slavery would remain a common practice in North America throughout the next three centuries . While the Northern states benefited from the advantages of a versatile, diverse economy, the Southern region remained primarily agrarian . Therefore, the necessity of slavery in the country varied disparately in the two continental regions. The South and their plantation economy depended upon slavery for a work force while the Northern economy would easily continue to flourish with its abolition. Spearheaded by William Lloyd Garrison, former slave Frederick Douglas, and Harriet Tubman, the mid 19th century abolition movement and the desire to abolish peculiar institution would eventually divide the nation . The Olmecs were known as one of the oldest cultures, as well as, the mother culture of mesoamerican cultures and were estimated to be around from 1000 to 500 BC. The name Olmec comes from the Mexica cultures that came after. It was not the name that the people of this culture named themselves, the name they called themselves has been lost through history. The Olmec culture was the culture that produced rubber, and had great workmanship in which they were able to create jade masks, celts, ornaments and tools using different materials such as gold. The Olmec mask is not the size of a present day human face, but rather much smaller, and could be compared to the size of the palm of an adults hand. The color is a deep green with a tint of grey, which has come from the aging of the stone. While there is evidence of cremation in the mesoamerican cultures, the color of this mask proves that the mask was not on the body during the cremation process, but rather after the ashes were put into the body bundle. In order to create these masks, the olmecs would carve the faces into the rock that would be used as the mask. To create the mouth, eyes and other deep incised areas, they used a technique in which they would attach a string to two pieces of wood and move in a saw like motion in order to heat and shape the stone. There is no negative space evident in the masks such as no holes for the eyes, nose, or mouth, only in the earlobes for attachment to the corpse bundle. When analyzing the iconography of the Olmec mask, the viewer must question the symbolic meaning and the use of conventionalized imagery. Although the symbolic meaning was not explicitly stated in any of the ancient codecies or texts, it is assumed that the mask was a way to give the deciesed a face for what could be the afterlife, or simply to identify the bundle. • 25. The Ethical Issues Of Business Introduction: In this essay, I will discuss three sections of business among many which hold ethical issues. Those sections are advertising, product liability, and leadership ethics. Within the three sections, I will identify and briefly discuss three specific ethical issues. I will then choose one ethical issue and go into the detail about how ABC Widgets Inc. will implement a policy on how to avoid the ethical issue. Advertising: Advertising has many ethical issues; however, I will focus on integrity, bribery, and manipulation. Integrity is a question of motives. It questions the purpose behind what is being advertised and the character of the company/person who is supporting it. You need your audience s trust if you want them to buy your products; there has to be a relationship. However, it is not integrity alone but integrity intertwined with persuasion and character. An example of this is the famous Jack Bennett case of 1997. Jack pulled in many individuals as well as businesses with his persuasion and enticed them to join the cause to help others. However, his audience misjudged his character. Jack Bennett s company, New Era Philanthropy, promised to match donations with money from anonymous donors when he simply did not have anonymous donors. He did this to help charities yet he lied to his faithful and inspired customers. Lack of integrity is a big issue in advertising. The prescreening of embryos and possible changing of genes so a child doesn t have a fatal illness is a tool that we should be able to use in the time of need. The passing on of fatal genes could cease with technology like this, and that is where the research should be going, not to determining specific traits of a child. The amazing part of being a human is being complex and diverse and not knowing how your child will be compared to you. To take away the variation is to take away the amazement of life. Advertisements are placed in newspapers, magazines, schools, and on billboards everywhere. According to marketing consultants Stan Rapp and Tom Collins, on a typical day, an average American sees over 5,000 advertisements a day (Gay, 1992). Many questions arise about these advertisements, such as Is advertising deceptive? Does it create or perpetuate stereotypes? Does it create conformity? Does it create insecurity in order to sell goods? Does it cause people to buy things that they really don t need? (Alexander Hanson, 1993, p. 240). For example, beer commercials often show a man after a hard day s work enjoying an ice cold beer to relax him. They also argue that ads give people the impression that products can give them talent. Take athletics, for example. Nike ads are accused of implying that their shoes will give a consumer athletic ability. Michael Jordan is shown in a television commercial dunking a basketball, wearing a new style of Nike shoes. Consequently, kids are going to want the same pair to be like Mike (Wolf, 1998, n.p.). On the other hand, advertising agencies say that they just give the consumers up to date information. They show change in their ads because they know that is what consumers want and to fulfill the needs of the general public, change. Thus, persuasive strategies are considered techniques used by advertisers to get consumers to buy. Teenagers have become top consumers in today s society, so advertisers have focused on getting their business. According to Simmons Market Research Bureau of New York City, teens bought 25% of all movie tickets and 27% of all videos, totaling $6.6 billion. In 1998, teens spent $1.5 billion on jeans, almost twice as much as in 1990, and $3 billion on sneakers, almost four times more than the amount spent in 1997 (Tulley, 1994). Water quality can be anything that affects the benefits humans derives from water. It can include drinking water, food, recreation, and any other use of water that is possible. Many invasive species including zebra mussels and Asian carp pose a great threat to the water quality of the Great Lakes. The ecosystem and industry relying on the Great Lakes are also affected by this invasion. I feel that the best way to stop invasive species from coming into the Great Lakes is to prevent the problem from happening before it already has. Zebra Mussels are small mussels originally found in Russia, but were introduced into the Great Lakes in 1988. Zebra Mussels have spread throughout every Great Lake, and are prominent in over 100 inland lakes (Home). Ships traveling up the Erie Canal transported the zebra mussel from European waters into the Great Lakes. The zebra mussel quickly spread from Lake Erie to the other Great Lakes. From its mitten like shape, to its historical background, to the presence of the Great Lakes, Michigan has a story unlike any others. One very important part of Michigan s story is how water has shaped the land making up the state. Seeing as the Great Lakes surround Michigan, it is obvious that the hydrologic system plays a great role in the water supply and the ecosystem of the Great Lakes. The hydrologic cycle includes evaporation, condensation, precipitation, groundwater, transpiration and runoff, all of which keep the Great Lakes functioning year after year. The University Corporation of Atmospheric Research developed an image to simply explain the hydrologic cycle as well as graphs explaining how each of the elements of the hydrologic cycle affects The Great Lakes on a monthly basis (located below). The hydrologic cycle keeps the Great Lakes up and running. Without it, Michigan would not have the inhabitants it does today. The abundant supply of water allows a vast array of wildlife to live in Michigan, and made it a desirable place for early settlers to inhabit. • 43. Corporal Punishment with Respect to the Private and Public... 1 Introduction Corporal punishment is the unlawful intentional act of causing harm by physically inflicting punishment on the body of an offender or severely criticising the offender. There is a distinction in common law between corporal punishment in the public sphere and in the private sphere. Corporal punishment on children in the private sphere is administered by parents. It is legally accepted in South Africa, provided that the requirements are met. The public sphere s position is much different in the sense that the government along with all schools have no authority to physically discipline school children anymore. Authority to exercise corporal punishment often leads to abuse of power, child abuse and feelings of superiority. All ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rex v Janke Janke ( Janke ) clarifies the rights parents have when corporally punishing their children with the intention of teaching them a valuable lesson. The requirements for this defence are for it to be moderate and reasonable. The reasonable requirement refers to the child having to wrongfully do something or threaten to do so. The moderate requirement states that the punishment must be in proportion to the age, build, health and gender of the child. Corporal punishment by parental authority can only succeed as a defence if it meets these requirements, as well as having the intention to discipline or educate the child. 3 1 Arguments against parent s right of chastisement The harm inflicted on a child when punishing him/her, violates the human rights of the child, which states that every child should be protected from abuse or degradation in section 28(d) of the Constitution. Another point of inconsistency the legalisation of corporal punishment in the private sphere, is set out in section 39(3) of the Constitution that states: The Bill of rights does not deny the existence of any other rights or freedoms that are recognised or conferred by common law, customary law or legislation, to the extent that they are consistent with the Bill . The current position of the private sphere is not in correspondence with the public sphere, even though they both deal with corporal punishment. Confusion could be raised as ... The prison is described as an quot;ugly edifice quot; and quot;black flower of civilized society quot;. Weeds grow in front of the gloomy structure, where a group of Puritans, dressed normally in their dull clothing, has gathered. The only positive image in the whole setting is a single rosebush that stands beside the weeds. It foreshadows that there will be some brightness amidst this quot;tale of human frailty and sorrow. quot; Notes The purpose of this opening chapter is to set the scene for the novel in seventeenth century Boston. A crowd of Puritans has gathered at the prison and as always, they wear quot;sad colored quot; clothing. The description of the dark and gloomy prison sets the mood for the entire story and foreshadows the situations of Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale. Morris Glietzman uses these similes in accordance with the story to make the reader feel that the object being described in the simile is alive when it maybe non living. Morris Glietzman uses similes in his books to help the reader understand how the object or person is without plainly saying that the ball was flying fast trough the air but like a scud missile. • 47. The Rise Of The Welfare State The Rise of the Welfare State In America today, just over ten million people are on unemployment insurance, one hundred and ten million people are on welfare, and the total government spending annually is around one hundred and thirty billion dollars (Welfare Statistics). The welfare state is a political system based on the proposition that the government has the individual responsibility to ensure that the minimum standard of living is met for all citizens. Specifically, in the matters of health care, public education, employment, and social security, the welfare state assumes all responsibility. According to John Rawls, In a just society the liberties of equal citizenship are taken as settled; the rights secured by justice are not subject to political bargaining or to the calculus of social interests. The only thing that permits us to acquiesce in an erroneous theory is the lack of a better one; analogously, an injustice is tolerable only when it is necessary to avoid an even greater injustice (Rawls). In the 1840s, Otto Von Bismarck, the first Chancellor of Germany, was the father of the modern welfare state. He built the program to win over the support of the working middle class in Germany and ultimately reduce the outflow of immigrants to the U.S., where welfare did not exist (Welfare State). In the United States, not all companies provided workers with benefits, thus the workers appealed to the government, giving rise to the first form of welfare capitalism. ...
