with delegations from all over the world attending to lay claim to their desires, or gain reparations
for their sacrifices throughout the greatest war the world had ever been subject to. The big four
countries at the negotiating table were the British under Lloyd George, the French led by Georges
Clemenceau, The Italians and their prime minister Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, and The United

In Life in the Iron Mills, Rebecca Harding Davis tells the story of Hugh Wolfe, a lower class man
whose love of beauty and desire to move up in the world ultimately leads to his mental decline
and demise. Wolfe lives in a town of smothering grey smog and works in an iron mill reminiscent
of Hell, places that induce hopelessness and despair by appearance. In contrast to his
surroundings, Wolfe possesses a fierce love of beauty and a talent of sculpting with korl, both of
which are frequently associated with higher socioeconomic classes. Initially, it appears that Davis
means to reinforce the common associations of beauty with the upper class and unseemliness with
the lower class. In the story, beauty can be associated with the upper class characters through their
polished appearances and admiration of art, inciting a positive association in response to beautiful
imagery; unseemliness, on the other hand, can be associated with the lower class and negative
feelings because the mill is reminiscent of hell and the characters are generally unattractive.
However, when looked at with a closer lens, it appears the story cannot be taken at face value and
the typical feelings surrounding beauty and ugliness do not apply in the story. Appearances can be
deceiving: within Life in the Iron Mills, ugliness represents opportunity whereas the beauty serves
as a distraction. By juxtaposing unsightly and attractive, Davis shows that mobility is possible only
through unattractive, hard work

I grew up in Dayton Ohio where drugs and crime is very high. I watched the people I grew up
with thrown in prison or murdered. At a young age I was moved around many different foster
homes because my father was in prison and so was my mother. I was always told I was never

From the end of Reconstruction in 1877 to the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement in 1954,
laws were in place that enforced racial segregation (referred to as Jim Crow laws). Beginning in
the late 1870s , Southern state legislatures, which were no longer under the control of freedmen
and carpetbaggers, passed legislation that required whites to be separated from persons of colour
in schools and public transportation, which was anyone who was strongly suspected of black
ancestry. Along with this, the segregation principle extended to theatres, restaurants, cemeteries,
and parks in an attempt to prevent contact between whites and blacks as equal members of
society. At the state and local level, it was codified and in the infamous U.S. Supreme Court case
Plessy v. Ferguson. On June 7, 1892, Homer Plessy bought a first class ticket to Covington at the
Press Street Depot in New Orleans. After telling the conductor that he was a colored man , the
former asked him to move to the coloured car, but the latter refused because he exclaimed that he
was an American citizen and that he intends to ride to Covington. Soon afterward, Plessy was
arrested and dragged off of the train. Four months after his arrest, Plessy s attorneys entered a plea

Sunni (Western Iraq; Al Anbar Province), Shiite (Eastern Iraq, and Kurdish (Northern Iraq;

population. Iraq s borders, which were originally defined by British powers after World War I,
have largely failed to account for the cultural differences in peoples between the country s

and Syria. The legitimacy of ISIS as an emerging cultural group largely depends on their ability to

panel, two results were found to be extremely higher than the reference range. They were estradiol
and progesterone. According to the Walk In Lab, estradiol is only seen in the blood in large
amounts during pregnancy. When estradiol levels are high and continually increase in steady

Thus, the true culture of the organization cannot be understood by solely looking at the artifacts.
To understand more, it is necessary to look at the next level. Espoused beliefs and values are
goals, values, aspirations and ideologies shared by everyone in an organization. Normally, these
values are laid down by the leaders or founders of the organization (Schein, 2010, p.25).
However, espoused beliefs and values can sometimes be mutually contradictory (Schein, 2010,
p.27). Thus, the organization s culture is only understood just on the surface level. Basic
underlying assumptions, which are unconscious and taken for granted beliefs and values
provides for a deeper understanding of an organization s culture. Schein concluded that the
essence of a culture lies in the pattern of basic underlying assumptions (Schein, 2010, p.32). If
the basic underlying assumptions are not deciphered, it will be hard to understand the artifacts
and espoused beliefs and values correctly. As Schein (2010, p.32) himself had concluded, any
group s culture can be studied at the three levels. The three levels of culture allows for an
analysis of Pixar s organizational cultural from an observational level. Information can be readily
drawn from business reviews, news articles on Pixar, interviews with Pixar s employees and Pixar
s website, thus making Edgar Schein s three levels of culture an ideal model for analysis of Pixar s
culture.
