Critical Response to the Tao Te Ching
Critical Response Paper I would like to say that I chose the Tao Te Ching, however, it chose me. I was
first introduced to this text one Christmas morning, many years ago, and it has been with me (in one
way or another) ever since. Due to my lifestyle I was constantly losing my copy, and in my attempts to
replace it I had the pleasure of owning a multitude of versions, and differing translations. Today I will
be using the 1988 publication of the Tao Te Ching as translated by author Stephen Mitchell (as my
primary source). One of the main reasons I chose Mitchell s translation is because he uses she instead
of the conventional he throughout his text. I found this to be refreshing and Mitchell explains this by

This text teaches that the idea of unlimited freedom is simply an illusion. I understand this passage as
explaining that maximum freedom is experienced when one is in the middle between imprisonment
and anarchy. By doing so you are then finding freedom through moderation. Embracing The Mystery.
The Master keeps her mind always at one with the Tao; that is what gives her her radiance. The Tao is
ungraspable. How can her mind be at one with it? Because she doesn t cling to ideas. The Tao is dark
and unfathomable. How can it make her radiant? Because she lets it. Since before time and space
were, the Tao is. It is beyond is and is not. How do I know this is true? I look inside myself and see.
(Chapter 21, Mitchell). I understand this passage to mean that by embracing the mystery (and not
fearing it) one can learn to live a life not controlled by fear and to enjoy every confusion. Lao Tzu
writes within another chapter about how to live with fear, They were careful as someone crossing an
iced over stream. Alert as a warrior in enemy territory. Fluid as melting ice. Shapable as a block of
wood. Receptive as a valley. Clear as a glass of water (Chapter 15, Mitchell). This chapter helps to
explain the balance of both fear and curiosity that is needed to reach ones true potential. If one is
centered on the Tao, then one doesn t need

Gender Bias In The United States
Throughout the history of the United States, gender bias has been and still is an immense concern.
Women have been at the forefront of such prejudice. For several centuries, women have battled for
equity in their everyday lives, academically, and professionally. The push for justice has been a slow
process, with incremental gains. Initially, educational experiences for women were limited to a
curriculum that would support and/or reinforce the ideas that women were less superior to males.
Women were identified as the homemakers and their essential duties only entailed domestic skills.
There were several ideas that contributed to the connotation of gender bias of women. Notions such as
educated women were dangerous to society, their mental and physical well being were at risk if
subjected ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The differences in the interaction between teachers and their male and female students are vastly
different. Teachers have a tendency to be ignorant of their contribution to the continual trouble of
obtaining gender equity. A teacher should be studying their students, just as must as a student is
required to learn from teachers lessons. Constant awareness of classroom interactions is fundamental
to develop and model equity that is beneficial to supporting each student s ability to be successful. In
more recent years, our educational system has faced challenges that are leading our country back into
segregation. Single sex education has resurfaced; jeopardizing the gains our ancestors fought so hard
for. A few people believe that the biological make up between genders is significantly different, that
having coeducational classes is doing more harm than good. Conversely, there is no proven study that
supports these claims; however studies have displayed the exact opposite. Separating genders within
the educational system will only perpetuate and magnify

The Texas City Disaster
The Texas City disaster took place on April 16th, 1947, with the detonation of 2300 tons of
ammonium nitrate, near the Texas City docks. The Grandcamp was set to embark on an assigned trip
to Europe to help in the reconstruction of various countries in the aftermath of the Second World War.
The ships were loaded with 32.5 % ammonium nitrate fertilizer, which is a high explosive used in
military and mining operations. The result of which was a DDT which is a deflagration to detonation
causing a massive explosion leading to many deaths, destroyed homes, and the surroundings being
ruined. The leading causes of this horrific tragedy were poor transportation and storing laws of
ammonium nitrate which was a main component in the disaster, if these two components had have

Museum Paper
Museum Paper I went to the Cantor Center for Visual Arts on Stanford Campus on 2/28/13. I saw a lot
of sculptures and vases there. They are very beautiful and interested. The most interested one I think
was Kleophon Painter, Volute Krater , ca. 430 BCE, Greece, red figure terra cotta vase, size 26 ¾ * 19

Euphronios s panel is not creating a two dimensional one; instead, his panel is to bring imagines
moving into three dimensional space a new conception of what a picture is supposed to be. It shows a
very detailed story connected to the gods. According to the Britannica, Euphronios experimented with
new ideas, forms, and designs within the context of the Archaic tradition, especially the adoption and
exploration of the new red figure technique. Generally, Euphronios s earlier works were signed as

Corrie Ten Boom
The theme of selfless service and unflinching love in the face of persecution dominates the work of
Corrie ten Boom in THE HIDING PLACE. Through the lens of her Christian upbringing, ten Boom
articulately recounts her life s journey from a small child living in a bustling Dutch city to a vapid,
malnourished prisoner of the German Nazis. Through her life s struggle, she hopes to inspire others
and teach a new generation about the value of life and the innate capacity that all possess to fully love
one another.
THE HIDING PLACE recounts Corrie ten Boom s intriguing life story. Casper ten Boom and

This visit marked a turning point for Corrie. Through the Bulldog s anecdotes of harassment and
difficulty, she was able to personalize the wrath of the German soldiers. She experienced first hand the
effects that the persecution had on Haarlem s Jews. Over the next few weeks, Jews began furtively
arriving at the Beje under the cover of night in order to escape their captors. Corrie, Betsie, and their
father welcomed these new guests with open arms, but the ten Booms knew that the Jews would not
be able to stay for very long. Ration cards were scarce and food would soon run out. Corrie turned to
her brother Willem, who worked with the Underground Resistance. Willem arranged for the
transportation of the Jews to the countryside, but Corrie knew that his help would only last for so long.
For her to be successful at helping the Jews, she needed to make her own connections and arrange her
own system of dealings. She arranged for ration cards to be dropped off at the Beje, kept in contact
with the Resistance s top leaders, and had alarm systems and a secret hiding place in her room built.
The Beje turned into the hub of the Jewish underground movement in Haarlem under the guise of a
petty watch repair shop. Putting their personal safety at risk week after week, month after month, the

Capital Punishment is Cruel And Unusual Essay
The following description of Evans s electrocution was sworn to and verified by Russell F. Canan on
June 22, 1983:
The first jolt of 1900 volts of electricity passed through Mr. Evans body. It lasted thirty seconds.
Sparks and flame erupted from the electrode tied to his leg. His body slammed against the straps
holding him in the electric chair and his fist clenched permanently. A large puff of grayish smoke and
sparks poured out from under the hood that covered his face. An overpowering stench of burnt flesh
and clothing began pervading the witness room. Two doctors examined Mr. Evans and declared that
he was not dead. The electrode on the left leg was refastened. At 8:30 p.m. [sic] Mr. Evans was

Assuming that the killer is capable of such reasoning shows us the arrogance of our kind. In fact, those
who commit violent crimes often do so in moments of passion, rage and fear times when irrationality
reigns (Information, Capital Punishment 107). Killing a human being as prevention to crime is, in
essence, using a human being as a means rather than an ends.
Other Christians I previously spoke to believe that, the killer s actions are irreversible and that such a
crime deserves an equal punishment . These same people would cite the biblical passage that exhorts
an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth . However, if a crime deserves equal punishment, then why do
we not rape the rapist or burn the arsonist? A civilized society must be based on values and principles
that are higher than those it condemns. Biblically, we are called to live by higher values. In the New
Testament, Jesus said that we may have heard it said an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth but He
instructed us to turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:38 41) to love even our enemies (Matthew 5:43 45),
to obey the Ten Commandments which tell us not to kill (Exodus 20:13) and not to put ourselves into
the position of God by judging whether others live or die (John 8:7). Vengeance and retribution are to
be left to God, who is the only One with the perfect capabilities of judgment. If the argument is that

The Role of Women in the Ibo Culture Essay
The Role of Women in the Ibo Culture The culture in which Things Fall Apart is centered around is
one where patriarchal testosterone is supreme and oppresses all females into a nothingness. They are
to be seen and not heard, farming, caring for animals, raising children, carrying foo foo, pots of water,
and kola. The role of women in the Ibo culture was mostly domestic. The men saw them as material
possessions and thought of them as a source of children and as cooks. As a man made his way in life
by farming yams, he needed a strong workforce. This workforce included his wives and children. A
man would have many wives. The more wives and children a man had, the more honor and respect he
received.

When he saw the tree, he beat her for killing it, even though the tree was clearly quite alive (38).
When Okonkwo was near his daughter Ezinma, he would think to himself, She should have been a
boy. Apparently, a girl was not capable providing him with sense of pride. In the Ibo culture, when a
woman was to be married, the family of her suitor would come and inspect her to be sure she was
beautiful and ripe enough to be a part of their family. A woman did not have any value other than her
beauty and her abilities to cook and bear children. In a conversation between Okonkwo and his friend
Obierika, they spoke of two other villages where their
customs are all upside down and titled men climb trees and pound foo foo for their wives (73). They
spoke of other tribes where the children belong to the wives and their families. You might as well say
that the woman lies on top of the man when they are making the children.
This remark makes it seem that there is no love making in this culture, but only child making, in
which the woman has no real role. In a description of a ceremony, It was clear from the way the crowd
stood or sat that the ceremony was for men. There were many women, but they looked on from the
fringe like outsiders (87). The women were not included in discussions, councils, nor were they made

Frank Sinatra was a huge fan of rock and roll music. He defended fashionable, high class, and lyrical

Atticus Role Model
What is being a role model? Being a good role model is showing people how to be a good example by
sticking to your own rules and standards yourself. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee,
Atticus shows this many times throughout the story. To Atticus, not following his own values means
he cannot tell his children Scout and Jem to do anything anymore. There are three examples of when
Scout and Jem learn to admire their father, when Tim Johnson had rabies, when he was a lawyer
during a court session, and what happened after the court session. One event, where Scout and Jem
learned not to underestimate Atticus is when the neighborhood dog, Tim Johnson, had rabies. With
movements so swift they seemed simultaneous, Atticus s hand yanked a balled tip lever as he brought
the gun to his shoulder. (Page 127). Scout is completely thrown off by the fact that Atticus shot Tim
Johnson on his first attempt. The quote also shows that Scout is in awe because Atticus can move so
fast. This is mainly due to Scout thinking Atticus is an old man. d you see him, Scout? d you see him
just standin there... n all of a sudden he just relaxed all over, an it looked that gun was a part of him.
(Page 129). Jem is pleasantly surprised to learn that Atticus is a natural sharpshooter. Also, this
encounter taught Jem that Atticus is not useless after all. Well now, Miss Jean Louise... still think your

Octavian and Marc Antony- The Duel of Words and Deeds
Octavian and Marc Antony The Duel of Words and Deeds Following the Julius Caesar s death at the
hands of the Senate, Octavian and Marc Antony propelled themselves to the pinnacle of Roman
power. First joining together during the Second Triumvirate, these men represented the true power
players of Roman politics. As their alliance fractured, both Romans resorted to propaganda to gain an
edge over the other. Through insulting the other and polishing their own image, both Antony and
Octavian looked to capture absolute Roman dominance. Even before their eventual war in 32 B.C.E.,
the men engaged in a duel of words in deeds. This paper will first overview the formation and
disintegration of Second Triumvirate between Marc Antony, Marcus Lepidus, and Octavian. Its main
portion will divulge the devious propaganda, leading up to the war in 32 B.C.E., used by Marc Antony

provinces. In power, they were equal to the consuls and had the right to select magistrates. The

Paraphilia s Theory Of Sexual Deviance
Sexual deviance is considered any sexual activity that is different than the normal, acceptable sexual
activities of a society, but is vital for the person to experience arousal and orgasm (Sadock, 2007). The
activities that are considered deviant can change over time and be different in different societies.
These are also known as paraphilias. A paraphilia involves an extreme and continual sexual interest in
children, objects, animals, materials, etc. or harming oneself or others during sexual activity.
Sometimes the sexual interest focuses on the person s own interests while in others it focuses on the
target of the person s sexual interest. For one to be diagnosed with one of these disorders, the
paraphilia would need to cause considerable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Medication is also helpful in reduction of fantasies and harmful behavior which is necessary for those
who participate in life threatening behaviors such as sexual asphyxiation (minddisorders.com).
Biological Theories of Sexual Deviance
Biological theories of sexual deviance focus on structural differences in the brain, the genetic and
chromosomal makeup, hormone levels, as well as defects in cerebral functioning. Although a person s
biological makeup does have a part in some paraphilias, those who research the causes have yet to
come to a conclusion on the exact reasoning behind them. It is thought that psychological factors are
more the central reasoning behind these behaviors and that some event or events that occurred during
childhood caused association of sexual pleasure with that event or object and a paraphilia evolved.

Christianity In Beowulf By Seamus Heaney
The novel Beowulf by Seamus Heaney is told in late medieval Anglo Saxon Britain, after they were
already christianized, but its about early medieval Scandinavia, which is pagan. Although Beowulf is
believed to be pagan, the narrator of the poem makes constant references to God suggesting that hero
Beowulf s trust in God can be translated into christianity. The Angelo Saxon legends were passed
down through oral tradition, so by the time the monks got it, they added several christian elements to
it. The author may have written it to influence the pagan people at the time. In Beowulf, there are
many pagan practices described, the relationship between God(s), and shows how the heroic code

Human Nature In Lord Of The Flies
Mark Twain once said, Everyone is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody .
What the 19th century American writer said perfectly captures the state of human nature: there is a bad
aspect for every good one. Sometimes, however, the dark side outshines the light of the moon.
Nowhere is this more apparent than in William Golding s timeless classic, The Lord of the Flies
(1954), where a group of boys are stranded on a deserted island in the absence of adults and must set
up society in order to be rescued. As the novel continues, the boys progressively abandon society and
seek evil deeds, led by the antagonist, Jack. With a lack of society, humans revert to a more primitive
and evil nature. The descent in human nature in the boys can be identified from the very beginning.
After the boys have found each other on the beach, Ralph decides to take Jack and Simon on a
expedition to find out where they are. However, Piggy wants to join them, but Ralph has other plans.
You can t come. Piggy s glasses were misted again this time with humiliation (25). Even from the
beginning of the novel, the boys evil intentions are clear. Ralph, being the leader, shows the boys that
excluding and picking on others is okay, which escalates as the novel progresses. While Ralph s
actions can be viewed as childish and simply the result of his upbringing, his immediate willingness to
satisfy his pleasure at the expense of Piggy s shows that the boys are willing to commit bad

How Is Brutus Justified In Killing Caesar
Et tu, Brute! Then fall, Caesar, Caesar cried as he breathed his last and fell to the floor of the senate
house. His blood flowed from the dagger holes in his body, pooling at the feet of his murderers. And
there he lay, dead, slayed by the hand of his former friend Brutus. His so trusted, so honorable friend,
upon whom he thought he could depend, had betrayed him. Some may say that Brutus was not a
Betrayer, as he did what he did because he loved Rome more than Caesar. While it may be true that
Brutus loved Rome and was a patriot, this does not change his actions of betrayal towards Caesar.
While Caesar s murder was gruesome, some would argue that the patriotism and control displayed by
Brutus justifies the necessary removal of Caesar. After all, Burutus does prevent the death of Antony
by saying that Our course will seem too bloody, Caius Cassius, To cut the head off and then hack the

Dream Intired By Langston Hughes, Dreams And Dream Deferred
Are dreams alive? Within the thought provoking and inciteful poems, Dreams and Dream Deferred
Langston Hughes uses repetitions, binaries, and strands to bring alive the human subconscious that is
often overlooked in daily life. Although the poems attempt to impart wisdom concerning subconscious
decision making, the fundamental message is about the importance of seeing the silver lining and
seizing opportunities before they become a regret.
A dream is an opportunity to give birth to reality through harvesting thought. Making appearances in
the poems and as part of the title, the word dream dominates both poems in their entirety. The poems
treat the word not as unconscious thoughts that ensue sleep, but as an abstract form of unrealized
potential.
The most notable binary opposition is barren versus explode, which is the decision that Langston
Hughes places on the audience s shoulders. Arnold Schwarzenegger could not have said it better
himself in giving his famous ultimatum as the Terminator, Come with me if you want to live. . Barren
describes lifelessness in space while explode is the action that overcomes it. Explode brings warmth
and life into the cold, barren vacuum synonymous to the Big Bang Theory. While barren and explode
do not actually repeat, they are repeated throughout the poems in other binary oppositional forms: Life
versus die and sweet opposed by rotten. Through these words, the poems express a quiet protest that
holds the death of dreams in contempt of the beautiful, and responsible for what is barren and lifeless.
Throughout Dream Deferred, strands can be spotted that are initially harsh coming off the tongue.
Mental images of rotten meat and festering sores evoke negative connotations that vividly describe
stubborn emotional chaffing. It is the kind of negativity that hit a person straight in the gut like divorce
or home buyer s remorse.
Thereafter, Hughes subtly progresses into a more positive light, not letting the reader forget that the
light does not completely outshine the darkness: Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a
sore And then run? This could be an attempt by Hughes at reassurance, saying that there s light at the
end of the tunnel when one has

The Wiley College team went against Harvard College in a debate in 1935 which took place at

Analysis Of The Book American Way By Gary Althen
I was always interested in understand wf the american (capitalize proper nouns) culture. When I first
came here I noticed that americans are really independent and self reliant individuals, so for the
research I chose the topic American friendship so I could understand better what americans think
about friendship. According to the author of the book American Ways (written by Gary Althen with
Janet Bennet), americans do not like to feel dependent on someone or that someone become V
dependent on them. The author also said that americans have different groups of friends. Friends to go
to the movie, to study, and so on. For my research I interviewed 15 americans, namely 12 students of
the University of Arkansas and 3 older friends of mine (a couple and one other friend) that I met
because of a program of the UofA. The interviewees were between 20 and 50 years of age. Some of
the students I already knew and a few others was s/v random students. My survey had simple
questions that I though sp would be interesting to ask. Such as(P), what do they expect from a
friendship, what are they prepare VT to give for a friend and if they have any international friends.
Since I am a art international student and for me it has been a little hard to get to know them as a
friend, I thought about this last question. The interviewees seemed surprised when I asked about the
type (gender) of friends they had. Both male and female was he majority of art. responses (87%). Only

out that the dog belonged to Judd Travers. Marty decided to keep the dog which is breaking the law.
Marty figured that doing something just is better than doing it by the law because he knew that Judd
would hurt the dog more if he had given him back. Marty found that doing something wrong for the
greater good was better than just giving that poor dog a ride back to abusement. Marty also had

John Gay s The Beggar s Opera
Wrought with double irony and an overall sense of mock pastoral, English playwright John Gay s The
Beggar s Opera (1728) expresses the ironic dynamic between the central characters Macheath and
Peachum. Even the names of the characters comically resemble their occupations within the play,
Peachum s being a play on the word peach which means to bring one to trial, while Macheath s
meaning son of heath and being a play on the heaths of London, which were prime places for
highwaymen (Tillotson et al.). While Gay used both characters as a political satire towards Jonathan
Wild and the then Prime Minister Robert Walpole (after all, The Beggar s Opera was a political satire
first and a potential literary commentary second), they also mocked the traditional roles of hero and
villain by switching their positions in an ironic fashion. Throughout the play, Peachum expresses how,
despite his rather nefarious act of peaching criminals, he does not view himself as a villain. Rather, he
views himself as a tragic hero, reigning high above the cheats of the world and putting them in their
rightful place: whether it be the gallows or under his thumb. Such a concept creates the second layer
of irony, the first being that, conventionally, Peachum fits many of the characteristics of a tragic hero.
He conscientiously sees what he his doing as righteous a trait of the pastoral hero. Within the first
scene of the play, Peachum compares his occupation of peaching to a lawyer s, both

My Cultural Identity In Remember The Titans
What is cultural identity? What is my cultural identity? We can go into my mind to see what we can
find. I am a calm, easygoing, relaxed, athletic, and a somewhat independent latin american person. I
believe this because I am easy to get along with, I sometimes want to do things on my own, and I
exercise and play sports. Since I am latin, I have to speak spanish at home or around my family, but I
speak english outside of home. My parents don t speak english, so they use me as a translator
wherever we go. This is a somewhat representation of my cultural identity. We will find out the rest of
my cultural identity with a representation of my rosary, watching Remember the Titans, having some

My favorite movie is Remember the Titans. It is a sports and drama movie, directed by Boaz Yakin,
which also directed other films like Max, and Safe. Denzel Washington and Will Patton star in the film
as the coaches of the football team. The message is to never judge a book by its cover. In Virginia high
school football is a way of life, it s celebrated like a National holiday. In 1971 high school football
was everything to the people of Alexandria, Virginia. Until in 1971 the local school board was forced
to integrate an all black schools and an all white the district, the foundation of football s great tradition
was put to the test. But the movie is more than just football. The integrated high school football team

Radiocarbon Dating Is Inaccurate
If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound? If God created the
earth and no one was around to see it, did it still happen? The answer to both of these questions is yes.
Because of the Bible, we know that God created the earth in a literal 6, 24 hour days about 6,000 years
ago. Many Christian think God may have used evolution and creation but that is not a viable theory.
Methods such as Carbon Dating cannot be trusted because they have been proven inaccurate over and
over again. Because radiocarbon dating is inaccurate, the literal Genesis account of creation is the one
and only viable answer to where this world came from.

Warm Hues
Like it was mentioned before, blue is a calming color with an icy undertone, so one of the ultimate tips
that you can do to augment your eye color is to truly use lots of various hues that consist of warm
colors. The colors that are included in this category are browns, tones of an earthy nature and also
some softer colors that would suit your beautiful blue eyes superbly.
7. Simplicity Pays
Blue eyes are naturally beautiful and have an enchanting look that is an instant crowd puller. So
sometimes you don t require tons of eye makeup to surround your eyes, you just need to go simple and
show them off. Earnestly, too much of color and makeup can divert from you re the natural beauty of
eyes.
8. Highlight
Highlight is the need of the hour in the present times. So make sure that you accompany your eyeliner
or eyeshadow with some highlights. The highlights will softly encase your eyes and also vivify them.
The correct way of applying them is to put them just below your brow bones and in the corner on the
inner side of your eyes. You must make sure that you apply a slightly daintier color in terms of
eyeshadow like silver or beige.

Cultural Connotation Behind The Rhetoric Of Escapism
In this book that tries to understand the cultural connotation behind the rhetoric of escapism and its
noun of the escapist, the author tries to correlate the word s significance with the growth and evolution
of human character as well as the connection of death itself. Her argument revolves around the notion
that there are various types of escapism and some of which include the traditional and dynamic type.
The traditional form of escapism focuses on the idea that a character is trying to escape his current
situation but comes to the realization that death is the only end goal and thus begins questioning the
different systems that transcend death. The dynamic form focuses on the speculation that characters
who seek death willingly are, in

Baking Soda Experiment
Rockets Powered by Baking Soda and Vinegar
Introduction:
A chemical change can be caused by combining two compounds, such as baking soda (NaHCO3) and
vinegar (CH3COOH). The change that is taking place is because of the chemical property of
reactivity. When these two compounds react CO2 is produced. In this experiment we wanted to see
how much baking soda, added to 10mL of vinegar, would cause a film canister rocket to shoot the
farthest. I predicted that 10mL of baking soda would shoot the farthest because it would be equal to
the amount of vinegar in the canister. The independent variable in this experiment was the amount of
baking soda and the dependent variable was how far the lid would shoot.
Materials:
Paper towel
Vinegar
Baking Soda
Film canister
Goggles (eye protection)
Measuring tools
Methods:
1. Measure and cut 9 pieces of paper towel 10cm x 12cm
2. Put 10mL vinegar in film canister
3. Measure baking soda, place in paper towel and fold it up

Changes Of Aging
As people age over time, they have a way of changing both psychological and biological. These
changes affect everyone in different ways and the changes that can take place over the years can vary
from individual to individual. For the human brain, there s no such thing as over the hill.
Psychologists researching the normal changes of aging have found that although some aspects of
memory and processing change as people get older, simple behavior changes can help people stay
sharp for as long as possible. Although researchers are still piecing together what happens in a healthy
aging brain, they can explain some typical changes (Memory Changes in Older Adults, 2006).

Semantic memory is generally derived from episodic memory, in that we learn new facts or concepts
from our experiences, and episodic memory is considered to reinforce semantic memory
(Zimmermann, 2014). It is agreed by researches that there is a transition from episodic to semantic
memory. With that being said, not all sematic memory is developed from episodic memory. A gradual
transition from episodic to semantic memory can take place, in which episodic memory reduces its
sensitivity and association to particular events, so that the information can be generalized as semantic
memory (Episodic Sematic Memory) . This is important to understand within this process due to the
fact that this allows individuals to store information as general knowledge. Both the episodic and

Who discovered America?
By: Deanne Mastrocola
Why is it that American culture today attributes its geographic discovery to a man named Christopher
Columbus? Could it be that he was the first European to claim this land as part of an Imperialistic
expansion or is it merely out of convenience for the history books? It is known that the American
continent was populated by 1000 AD which is long before settlements by Viking fisherman and even
longer before the arrival of Columbus. In spite of this fact every October, we as a culture celebrate a

The Simple The Better By Wranke Analysis
The Simple the Better In a place filled of talented people, Italy was the location in which performance
was vital in a rich or important person s life. Wranke s article explains how important it was to have
talent, in Italy, during the renaissance. The renaissance is known as the rebirth of painting, sculpting,
and almost everything we could possibly think off. During the renaissance, most artist had a common
enemy known as the court, which was ruled by the most wealthy and powerful families in Italy. The
court was in charge of one s position in society. When an individual would be born in a royal family,

The lords preferred having a good time to relax rather than having a piece of art been done in a
complicate way. This lead to the point in which artists preferred to be ranked together with
philosophers, because painters preferred the intellectually elite status of poets and philosophers... (pg.
28). Even though artists would have had a poor quality lifestyle, for them it was a lot better than been
a buffone because a buffone was a career that lacked respect. The overall purpose of Warnke s article
is the explanation of the financial status that one could expect as a painter, singer and buffone, during
the renaissance time. The author explains his thesis thoroughly, but the reader ends with more
questions regarding the situation that performers would have. The struggle of having work and been
paid not only for the need of money but for the social status as an artist. In this article, the point of
view is that as an artist in the category of paint, doing something that was less time consuming would
leave an individual with better life opportunities, rather than an artist doing complex frescos and

The Weaknesses Of The Judicial Branch Of Government In The...
The first form of Government in America was the Articles of Confederation, the Articles of

Hieronymus Bosch Essay
For my final project I chose to do a study on the artist Hieronymus Bosch, or more specifically I
decided to focus on his use of owls in his various paintings. Bosch was a very interesting lad and his
paintings lean toward the bizarre end of a normalcy spectrum. Individuals likeminded to Bosch
fascinate me. My mind does not function or view things the same way and I find it very intriguing. I
cannot even imagine what types of discussions (much less guess the probable subjects) Bosch would
have had with his fellow artists in his time.
A secondary reason I chose to explore the meanings behind the use of owls is because I have a
personal fascination with owls. I already knew that owls are well known for their association wisdom,
as well as the association with specific knowledge and erudition that can see through obscurity (and as
the bird of Athena/Minerva, the goddess of wisdom), the owl appears frequently in the emblems of

A Special Last Night By Diane Sawyer
Most of the humans in the world live on just a couple of dollars a day. In fact, I watched a special last
night where Diane Sawyer exposes the startling working middle class struggle in America. The show
followed several middle class Americans struggling to support their families and trying to make ends
meet. The recent economic struggles have seen the layoff of several employees in companies and even
some in public service. It is, however, significant to realize that since every business and or sector is
different, there must be various criteria used when laying off employees. The general rule is that it
must be justified and fairness considered across the board. You would apply organizational planning,

Therefore, because of prioritized staffing, I will reduce the other departments carefully considering the
work done by each department. The focus for layoff would be in certain job positions like secretary or
assistant. Laying off individual police Captain s secretaries might not be a popular decision and could
cause more work for some of the departmental leaders, but that would be the first resource to lose.
That means if there are five secretaries or assistants, I will lay off four of them and leave only one.
Making that position for the entire department and not just one indivdual. I would eliminate the
position of office messenger because most of the communications happen online and most
departments have Wi Fi. Another thought is to offer and early retirement option. Early retirement
could hopefully generate some stimulus, and it may be able to get at least three to four officers to
retire early. Offering early retirement can identify persons willing to take retirement and give them a
retirement package with full benefits (George, 2003). Thereby ensuring federal laws of age
discrimination are not a factor.
Completing the plan takes insight. You must be a realist and deal with the ethical issues that may arise.

to build close and trusting relationships with your coworkers. Even as a leader you have those

Tender Is Night Character Analysis
The Tragic Downfall of Promising Psychiatrist Dick Diver
The work of F. Scott Fitzgerald The Tender is Night shows us how a character having strong qualities
such as education and career may collapse in search of entering into a new world which results in
hamartia or a fatal flaw. It is the protagonist young American Doctor Dick Diver s tragic downfall

Fitzgerald s novel Tender Is the Night has taken it from the work of John Keats s Ode to A

Keat s work.
The title of the novel and the epigraph Fitzgerald offers illuminate the significance of night and
darkness in the story. An enquiry reveals a complicated and careful symbolic structure in Tender Is the
Night involving a contrast between the night and the day, darkness and light (6)
Although the novel is the last completed work of Fitzgerald one of the difficulties that the novel
presents is its ambiguity in understanding the chronological order of the work. While in the
masterpiece of Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby the protagonist Gatsby s downfall

  • 2. Critical Response to the Tao Te Ching Critical Response Paper I would like to say that I chose the Tao Te Ching, however, it chose me. I was first introduced to this text one Christmas morning, many years ago, and it has been with me (in one way or another) ever since. Due to my lifestyle I was constantly losing my copy, and in my attempts to replace it I had the pleasure of owning a multitude of versions, and differing translations. Today I will be using the 1988 publication of the Tao Te Ching as translated by author Stephen Mitchell (as my primary source). I understand this passage as explaining that maximum freedom is experienced when one is in the middle between imprisonment and anarchy. By doing so you are then finding freedom through moderation. Embracing The Mystery. The Master keeps her mind always at one with the Tao; that is what gives her her radiance. The Tao is ungraspable. How can her mind be at one with it? Because she doesn t cling to ideas. The Tao is dark and unfathomable. How can it make her radiant? Because she lets it. Since before time and space were, the Tao is. It is beyond is and is not. How do I know this is true? I look inside myself and see. (Chapter 21, Mitchell). I understand this passage to mean that by embracing the mystery (and not fearing it) one can learn to live a life not controlled by fear and to enjoy every confusion. Lao Tzu writes within another chapter about how to live with fear, They were careful as someone crossing an iced over stream. Alert as a warrior in enemy territory. Fluid as melting ice. Shapable as a block of wood. Receptive as a valley. Clear as a glass of water (Chapter 15, Mitchell). This chapter helps to explain the balance of both fear and curiosity that is needed to reach ones true potential. If one is centered on the Tao, then one doesn t need ... • 3. Gender Bias In The United States Throughout the history of the United States, gender bias has been and still is an immense concern. Women have been at the forefront of such prejudice. For several centuries, women have battled for equity in their everyday lives, academically, and professionally. The push for justice has been a slow process, with incremental gains. Initially, educational experiences for women were limited to a curriculum that would support and/or reinforce the ideas that women were less superior to males. Women were identified as the homemakers and their essential duties only entailed domestic skills. There were several ideas that contributed to the connotation of gender bias of women. Constant awareness of classroom interactions is fundamental to develop and model equity that is beneficial to supporting each student s ability to be successful. In more recent years, our educational system has faced challenges that are leading our country back into segregation. Single sex education has resurfaced; jeopardizing the gains our ancestors fought so hard for. Killing a human being as prevention to crime is, in essence, using a human being as a means rather than an ends. Other Christians I previously spoke to believe that, the killer s actions are irreversible and that such a crime deserves an equal punishment . These same people would cite the biblical passage that exhorts an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth . However, if a crime deserves equal punishment, then why do we not rape the rapist or burn the arsonist? A civilized society must be based on values and principles that are higher than those it condemns. Biblically, we are called to live by higher values. What the 19th century American writer said perfectly captures the state of human nature: there is a bad aspect for every good one. Sometimes, however, the dark side outshines the light of the moon. Nowhere is this more apparent than in William Golding s timeless classic, The Lord of the Flies (1954), where a group of boys are stranded on a deserted island in the absence of adults and must set up society in order to be rescued. As the novel continues, the boys progressively abandon society and seek evil deeds, led by the antagonist, Jack. With a lack of society, humans revert to a more primitive and evil nature. The descent in human nature in the boys can be identified from the very beginning. After the boys have found each other on the beach, Ralph decides to take Jack and Simon on a expedition to find out where they are. However, Piggy wants to join them, but Ralph has other plans. • 18. Dream Intired By Langston Hughes, Dreams And Dream Deferred Are dreams alive? Within the thought provoking and inciteful poems, Dreams and Dream Deferred Langston Hughes uses repetitions, binaries, and strands to bring alive the human subconscious that is often overlooked in daily life. Although the poems attempt to impart wisdom concerning subconscious decision making, the fundamental message is about the importance of seeing the silver lining and seizing opportunities before they become a regret. A dream is an opportunity to give birth to reality through harvesting thought. Making appearances in the poems and as part of the title, the word dream dominates both poems in their entirety. The poems treat the word not as unconscious thoughts that ensue sleep, but as an abstract form of unrealized potential. The most notable binary opposition is barren versus explode, which is the decision that Langston Hughes places on the audience s shoulders. Arnold Schwarzenegger could not have said it better himself in giving his famous ultimatum as the Terminator, Come with me if you want to live. . Barren describes lifelessness in space while explode is the action that overcomes it. Explode brings warmth and life into the cold, barren vacuum synonymous to the Big Bang Theory. While barren and explode do not actually repeat, they are repeated throughout the poems in other binary oppositional forms: Life versus die and sweet opposed by rotten. Through these words, the poems express a quiet protest that holds the death of dreams in contempt of the beautiful, and responsible for what is barren and lifeless. Throughout Dream Deferred, strands can be spotted that are initially harsh coming off the tongue. Mental images of rotten meat and festering sores evoke negative connotations that vividly describe stubborn emotional chaffing. It is the kind of negativity that hit a person straight in the gut like divorce or home buyer s remorse. Thereafter, Hughes subtly progresses into a more positive light, not letting the reader forget that the light does not completely outshine the darkness: Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore And then run? This could be an attempt by Hughes at reassurance, saying that there s light at the end of the tunnel when one has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Even the names of the characters comically resemble their occupations within the play, Peachum s being a play on the word peach which means to bring one to trial, while Macheath s meaning son of heath and being a play on the heaths of London, which were prime places for highwaymen (Tillotson et al.). While Gay used both characters as a political satire towards Jonathan Wild and the then Prime Minister Robert Walpole (after all, The Beggar s Opera was a political satire first and a potential literary commentary second), they also mocked the traditional roles of hero and villain by switching their positions in an ironic fashion. Throughout the play, Peachum expresses how, despite his rather nefarious act of peaching criminals, he does not view himself as a villain. Rather, he views himself as a tragic hero, reigning high above the cheats of the world and putting them in their rightful place: whether it be the gallows or under his thumb. Such a concept creates the second layer of irony, the first being that, conventionally, Peachum fits many of the characteristics of a tragic hero. He conscientiously sees what he his doing as righteous a trait of the pastoral hero. Within the first scene of the play, Peachum compares his occupation of peaching to a lawyer s, both ...
