Essay On Banking Industry
Banking Industry in 2010 11
During 2010 11, banks improved in terms of asset quality and profitability. Stress test showed that
banks remained reasonably resilient to liquidity and interest rate shocks
There were emerging concerns about banking sector stability related to disproportionate growth in
credit to sectors such as real estate, infrastructure, NBFCs and retail segment, persistent asset liability
mismatches, higher provisioning requirement and reliance on short term borrowings to fund asset
growth
Presently, the key issues related to the Indian banking sector include: o prospective migration to Basel
III while upgrading the existing risk management practices under Basel II; o transition to International

London Blitz Research Paper
World War 2 lead to the destruction of many cities throughout the world. Some of the cities include
Berlin, Tokyo, and many others. One city that would be hit hard would be London. What would be
known as The Blitz would try to cripple London into submission. The Battle of Britain would take
place during the time of these raids. London would be bombed countless times by the Nazi s hoping
for a surrender. London fearing of invasion by the Nazi s would move a great deal of artwork and,
children out of the city s museums and to other locations for protection. London would preserve and

Strategic bombing would be a major factor in the destruction of London. More than 500,000 people
would die because of strategic bombing campaigns. Blitzkrieg is also known as The Blitz would be a
major tactic used by the Nazi s. They would use this tactic to invade neighboring countries. By the
time the blitz came upon Britain the Nazi s conquered most of Europe. The Nazi s planned to attack
Britain and invade. They would try to cripple the British defenses. While trying to bombard their
defenses they accidentally attacked a civilian area which caused uproar with the British people. Many
people thought raids like this would not stop so they had a mass migration of children and artwork.
The Nazi s began bombing London in September of 1940 and this would last until May of 1941. The
Battle of Britain was going on around the same time. This battle would not only be important because
it would prove to the Nazi s that they could not invade Britain, but this would mark Hitler s first defeat
in World War 2. This would be a landmark battle because not only was this battle not fought on land,
but for this first time in human history the whole battle was fought in the skies. One of the greatest
military inventions would come out of this battle was radar. Radar was only in the infancy before the
battle, but would become vital in the allies victory in the war. London by the end of the war was in
need of major reconstruction. Many would see this as an opportunity to rebuild and grow the city like
never before. They would introduce satellite towns and high rise buildings. They would build the
Barbican which would hold office blocks, an arts centre, a museum, housing and a school. This would
be one of the biggest reconstruction projects in European

The Cold War Era Essay example
The Cold War Era
Works Cited Missing
The late 1940s to the mid 1980s the American society saw what could quite possibly be titled the
biggest technological effect on society. This era, The Cold War, was a period in which fear of attack or
invasion and a need to be superior reigned in the American society. It led to the development of space
technology, during the Space Race, communication systems, and military technology in what has been
appropriately deemed the Arms Race.
On October 4, 1957 [1] a huge change concerning technology in society occurred. On this date, the
United Soviet Socialists Republic (USSR) launched Sputnik into outer space. The launch of Sputnik
instilled a fear in the American society and an urgent call ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
NASA was not engineering in a new field; the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA)
and other government organizations had been working on the idea of space flight. These organizations
were subsequently pulled into NASA upon its creation. [3] The main focus became developing
technology that was steady enough and strong enough to support human life in space.
The act of simply launching a rocket into space had been achieved over ten years before when Nazi
Germany launched its first successful V 2 rocket in October 1942. The V 2 (Vengeance Weapon 2)
rocket was built to shoot warheads at targets from a long range. [4]
With the disastrous ability of the V 2 in mind, when Sputnik was launched, the fear of ICBMs
(Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles) became a very prevalent part of American society. Families built
bomb shelters in their backyards and stocked them with non perishable goods to help them sustain life
if they were ever attacked. Students and employees practiced air raid drills by crawling under desks
and tables. An imminent fear of attack hung heavily in the air causing such historical events as the Bay
of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The entire era of the Cold War was spurred by a fear of the
technology that the opposing country (either Russia or America) possessed; thus, the obvious effect of
technology on the society of the times.
The Cold War Era was not an era that revolved entirely around fear

Analysis Of The Adoration Of The Shepherds
The Adoration of the Shepherds was painted by Francesco Fontebasso in the mid 18th century.
Francesco Fontebasso (4 October 1707 31 May 1769) was an Italian painter of the late Baroque period
of Venice. He first apprenticed with Sebastiano Ricci, but was strongly influenced by his
contemporary, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. In 1761, Fontebasso visited Saint Petersburg and produced
ceiling paintings and decorations for the Winter Palace. Fontebasso Painting The Adoration of the
Shepherds depicts Marry holding the Christ Child as he lay on a bed of straw, one old man kneeling
with hands clasped at right and the other two men standing admiring the child Christ, a woman behind
with a basket and two putti Pen and Angles hovering over them.
The Adoration of the Shepherds illustrates the three wise men visit to Mary and their gifts

The Pros And Cons Of All-Wheel Drive Vehicles
In all wheel drive vehicles, the transmission delivers torque to both front and rear wheels. Generally
speaking, you are better off driving in one in snowy conditions. With torque on each wheel, you are
less likely to get stuck in the snow, will drive better on up hills, and will accelerate better in the snow.
All of these advantages come in handy. However, many of the vehicles that end up in ditches or
involved in collisions in slippery road conditions are all wheel drive vehicles. The reason for this is a
lack of understanding of what all wheel drive can and cannot do. This lack of understanding produces
a dangerous overconfidence that causes the motorist to drive too fast and follow other vehicles too
closely for the road conditions. As

Racism And Segregation In A Lesson Before Dying
The setting of a novel is important in highlighting the central theme of the story. Ernest J. Gaines
choice of setting for his novel A Lesson Before Dying emphasizes the story s central theme of racism
and segregation. Gaines setting choices of a small southern Louisiana town in the 1940s, Henri Pichot
s plantation house and the local courthouse/jail all help to emphasize the central theme of racism and
segregation in the novel A Lesson Before Dying. Gaines description of the Bayonne courthouse and

after all of those years Grant has never been further than the home s kitchen. We especially see Grant

emphasizes the central theme of racism as the white plantation owner attempts to keep the black man
from gaining any power or even equality. Finally, Gaines setting choice of a small southern Louisiana

How Far Does the Disaster of 1898 Account for the Growth...
How far does the disaster of 1898 account for the growth of Catalan and Basque nationalism?
The humiliating defeat of Spain to America during the Spanish American War of 1898 dealt a
catastrophic blow to the Spanish nation. In the subsequent Treaty of Paris signed on December 10th
1898, Spain relinquished its remaining colonial territories in the Caribbean and the Pacific. The
disaster evoked heavy criticism of the Restoration government and its inherent corruption amongst
many groups within Spanish society and served as a catalyst for the emergence of new political forces
seeking to contest against the ruling oligarchy, most notably Catalan and Basque nationalism. This

As such, Catalonian regionalist demands tended to assume a subordinate position in relation to the
greater demands of Spain and its profitable empire. However, the crisis of 1898 engendered the
breaking down of Catalan acquiescence with the Restoration system. The loss of Spain s colonial
territories brought with it the loss of colonial markets that had existed as prime export outlets for
Catalan industry. In the last decade of the nineteenth century Spanish exports to its colonies had more
than doubled from 146.1 million pesatas in 1891 to 365.4 million in 1897, with the value of
Catalonian produce to the colonies reaching a peak of 124 million pesatas in 1895. For the region s
major textile industry, the markets of Cuba and Puerto Rico accounted for one fifth of the entire output
of its cotton mills. In surrendering control, by 1902 the territories of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the
Philippines now received just 6.2% of Catalan textile produce, a decline from 22% in 1896. Within
Catalonia, a feeling that defeat had been caused by years of faulty centralism by a corrupt
administration ended any trust Catalan business had placed in the Restoration system to protect its
interests. In the spirit of the Regeneracionismo movement, Catalan business interests represented by
organisations such as the Fomento del Trabajo proposed a number of reforms designed to regenerate
the region in order to compensate for the loss of its vital export outlets. Yet, the

Rem Sleep Research Papers
Most people dream anywhere from four to seven times per night, with each dream progressively
lasting longer as the body remains sleeping (Woolman). Some people say they don t experience
dreaming at all, which is not possible. What they are really saying is that they don t remember their
dreams, which is perfectly normal. What many do not realize is that in order to go into a dream state ,
it can take about thirty minutes. This is considered the rapid eye movement (REM) cycle. During
REM sleep, the human brain is just as active as it is if the person was in a conscious state. The length
of a dream is determined by how long the person is sleeping. Studies have shown that drugs and
alcohol regularly slow down a person s REM cycle, which results ... Show more content on

Cognitive theory on dreaming was explored by Calvin Hall, a behavioral psychologist. Hall writes,
The images of a dream are the concrete embodiments of the dreamer s thoughts; these images give
visual expression to that which is invisible, namely, conceptions ( Calvin Hall and The Cognitive
Theory of Dreaming ). Dreams are a way of displaying how we envision the our lives. Hall did a study
where he asked his students about their dreams, after studying thousands of them, he came down to
what dreams are really about. Hall suggested that the main cognitive structures that dreams reveal
include: conceptions of self, others, the world, penalties, or conflict ( Calvin Hall and The Cognitive
Theory of Dreaming ). Other studies that have been done about dreaming disclose that it can predict
what s next in life. Reports indicate dreams have foretold events upcoming in the dreamer s life,
including death. One study reports that 70 percent of women successfully predicted the sex of their
unborn child based upon dreams (Dreams Theories of Personality). Michael J. Brues, a sleep doctor,
worked on a study and concluded a theory to dreams, such as our brain and thinking, how we react to
certain situations, even depression or anxiety. Another aspect that has been discovered that is
accountable to dreaming is depression, anxiety, or

Menstrual Taboos On Children s Mental And Physical Health
Menstrual Taboos
In general, menstruation is not seen as an appropriate topic of conversation. People are often
uncomfortable with the very idea of it, and some are even ignorant of its function. Numerous religions
and cultures regard a woman s monthly period as impure, unclean, or even dangerous. The practices
and views resulting from these widespread beliefs can be harmful to women s mental and physical
health, as well as their livelihood and relationships with others. The purpose of this paper is to
examine menstrual taboos in various cultures and throughout history, compare the views of believers
of these ideas with those skeptic of them, and apply this issue to psychology.

When impregnation does not occur, the endometrium, along with blood and vaginal discharge, leaves
the uterus through the vagina, and the cycle repeats itself (Hyde DeLamater, 2014). Nothing of this
process indicates any toxicity in women, or any effect on them outside of the physical. It is a monthly
biological cycle that occurs in fertile women to prepare for the possibility of conception, and any
negative view towards it or the women experiencing it has its source in ignorance, fear, or in the
words of books written thousands of years before anyone even had an inkling of how menstruation
works.
History
Without knowing the reason why menstruation occurs, it is a scary idea; a woman, uninjured, begins
to bleed for days from the area of childbirth and intercourse every month. It would be easy to relate
this occurrence, to something mystical and powerful. The vagina itself has been a thing of mystery,
with some cultures considering it to be a channel to the beyond; babies are born through it, and
without knowledge of how they develop, some believed that newborns simply came from another
plane of existence (Magli, 2009, p. 91). The belief that a woman s body holds a portal to some other
world makes it frightening and possibly dangerous, and many traditions have manifested in an attempt
to control this supposed power, such as infibulation (cutting the labia so when the tissue heals, it
creates a barrier over the vaginal opening) and separation of women

The Narrative Voice in the Lovely Bones
In the novel The Lovely Bones (TLB) by Alice Sebold, the narrative voice is the key technique that
hooks the reader and compels him or her to turn over the page. While the author uses a number of
other literary techniques to draw the reader in, it is the narrator s voice that is this novel s most
interesting and appealing feature. The narrative voice in this novel is unique to other novels because
the narrator is a girl named Susie Salmon who is speaking from heaven. This is a distinctive point in
the novel because it gives us the story from the perspective from others and we experience themes in
the book that we never experienced before.
Firstly the narrator of the book TLB is a teenaged girl named Susie Salmon who has been raped at
murdered by a man named Mr. Harvey. Susie lived in a small American town and was killed in a
cornfield at the age of 14. We know that she is talking from the after life because she tells us from the
first page I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973 . She then starts to narrate the
novel from the afterlife. This perspective allows us this point of view to experience the narrator and
the people she is connected with in a way we have never touched upon before. Susie can tell the mood
of a person, what he/she is thinking at the time, what they are going to do next and it s because of the
way she can interpret the emotions of other people that makes the narrative voice of this novel it s
unique selling point

his famous tragedy, Hamlet, which is still analyzed for its success as a renowned classic. The story is
about a prince named Hamlet who meets his Father s ghost and learns of their murder by his uncle.
The story continues by depicting Hamlet s revenge and his falling into madness. Hamlet illustrates

interesting tragedy that changed the outlook on literature as a whole. Shakespeare has indisputable
skill in mastery over literary devices that shape themselves into an heart wrenching masterpiece.
Euphemisms form excellent literature by provoking thoughtful insight within texts to decipher what
would otherwise be seen as blunt or obvious. In hamlet, the euphemism, For thought and the trifling of
his favor, Hold it a fashion and a toy in blood, A violet in the youth of primy nature, (Act 1, Scene 3,
ln. 5 7) plays on Hamlet s attitude, hinting to ideas much more vile than what is initially spoken. This
allows for readers to interpret Hamlet in varying senses. The quote, I saw him enter such a house of
sale videlicet a brothel, or so forth... (Act 2, Scene 1, ln. 61 62) utilizes phrasing to avoid the use of

A Brief Note On Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
Introduction and background
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a surgical procedure performed on patients with coronary
artery disease to improve their survival and quality of life. (1) It remains to be the gold standard
treatment for patients requiring multivessel coronary revascularization despite recent advances in
medical therapies and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). (2) There are two forms of CABG.
Traditionally, CABG is performed with a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machine (aka heart lung
machine or the pump ) which maintains circulation while the heart is temporarily stopped. (1) This
creates a bloodless and motionless operating field for the surgeons. (3) The body is then weaned from
CPB and the heart is restarted with the completion of grafting. (1) Alternatively, a relatively newer
technique called off pump CABG or beating heart surgery can be performed. With this procedure,
CPB is not utilized and the surgeon grafts the blood vessel on the pumping heart after the area around
the blocked coronary artery is stabilized. (1)
Ever since the introduction of off pump CABG, clinicians all over the world have been interested in
finding out whether off pump CABG can help patients avoid the deleterious effects associated with
CPB and a large amount of research has been undertaken to investigate the potential advantages of off
pump CABG over the conventional on pump CABG. Adequate knowledge in this field will allow
surgeons to select an optimal surgical

Tom Regan s The Case For Animal Rights
Nowadays, People are more and more exploiting and handling animals as if they are some kind of
resources. Some people view themselves are the most important beings on the planet, so everything
can be done in order to ensure their survivals such as carnivorous eating and testing on animals.
However, some considered this as humans violated morality, as animals have their own lives, have
feelings and families as human posses. Therefore, in this essay, philosophers such as Tom Regan, Carl
Cohen and Mary Anne Warren express their own individualistic approach on the subject of moral
ethics and whether or not animals have rights related to John Stuart Mill. In Tom Regan s article The
Case for Animal Rights , he supports the idea of animals having rights. He states that humans and all
other animals are grouped together as one. Regan feels the view indirect duty views to be

One bacterial strain developed resistance against our most recent antibiotic, Zyvox, less than a year
after its release. There are so many bacteria, and they evolve so rapidly, that they will develop
defenses to any chemical attack we make. Bacteria have even been known to develop resistance to
bleach and other harsh chemicals (6). They are faster than we are. While we can slow them down
through more responsible use of our antibiotics, if we do not change our approach, we will lose. There
are two significant alternate approaches we could use to target and kill bacteria. One potential
alternate approach to the treatment of infectious disease is utilizing monoclonal antibodies to
supplement our own immune systems. Monoclonal antibodies are pure cultures of antibodies (the
body s primary foreign substance detection molecules) artificially produced to react to a single
specific substance or protein. By utilizing monoclonal antibodies to treat bacterial infection, we would
be flagging the bacteria for the body s immune system to come kill them. As the body already flags
bacteria to some extent, all monoclonal antibodies can do is enhance the activity of the immune
system, which would be ineffective in people with compromised immune systems. Additionally,
monoclonal antibodies would have to be developed for each individual strain of bacteria, and bacteria
could easily change and render the antibody useless. While it would

Muscles normally contract and relax numerous times throughout the day as we move around. When a

Abstract
Dark Matter has been one of the most researched topic in the recent era of science. Even though we
have observed e ects of this exotic entity, we are yet to understand its structural form. Thus we are
forced to hunt for clues that would help in a better understanding of this component which forms
26:8% of the entire universe. This report delves into the problems that led to the introduction of the
concept of Dark Matter. The at Rotation Curve Problem of velocity distribution of galaxies and the
Virial Problem have been discussed. The contribution of Dark Matter in the formation of Large Scale

Operation Mincemeat Essay
Ben Macintyre s Operation Mincemeat: How a Dead Man and a Bizarre Plan Fooled the Nazis and
Assured Allied Victory is an incredibly detailed account of the true story of a deception operation
devised by British Intelligence in World War 2 aimed to thicken the fog of war for the German war
machine. Mincemeat was a cover operation for Husky , which was the allied invasion of Sicily from
North Africa. Mincemeat was a plan devised to plant false documents and letters to cause the Germans
to believe that the imminent attack from North Africa would target Greece Sardinia and not Sicily.
Specifically, it was designed to make the massing of troops near Sicily look like the feint invasion, and
the actual feint invasion in Greece Sardinia seem to be the true threat. Ewen Montagu and Charles
Cholmondeley (the architects behind Operation Mincemeat ) both agreed that omitting the Sicily
invasion from the equation entirely, might tip off the Germans that the invasion force massing near
Sicily was the true threat, since the troops amassing in North Africa would surely be detected by the
axis (40). Basil Thomson, a novelist and policeman, inspired the broad idea that would become
Mincemeat . However, it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bernard Spilsbury, the forensic pathologist whose advice was sought out regarding some of the more
macabre details of Mincemeat prior to this, was once again consulted but this time he was asked for
his opinion on how to best preserve the corpse aboard a submarine. Spilsbury had explained that
oxygen caused the rapid decomposition of a corpse however, if most of the oxygen had previously
been excluded (71) from the container and it was airtight, then the body would remain perfectly
useable for the deception operation (it would not decompose too

The book is a war novel, specifically about the Vietnam War. The book realistically describe what it
was really like during the Vietnam War from 1955 1975. The realism, humor and intensity attract even

Death Of Latin American Culture
Death in Latin American Culture Death is part of life in every part of the world, and every culture
handles it differently. Just like every other region in the world, the approaches to death in Latin
America are unique to the area, and have changed over the years. The Pre Colonial death rituals in
Mexico, Peru, and Haiti each have their own method of addressing this inevitable tragedy. Never the
less there are common threads throughout the Aztec, Inca, and Taino peoples. When the Europeans
arrived in the Americas the beliefs and assumptions surrounding death changed, along with the rest of
the cultural landscape. This tumultuous time eventually led to a very unique heritage for the modern
people of Mexico, Peru, and Haiti. The infamous Aztec empire ruled the Mesoamerica through terror
and religious wars from the 14th century to the 16th century. Their capital was the floating city of
Tenochtitlan that was founded around 1325 until it the Aztecs were conquered by the Spanish in 1521
(Hilary Dockray, The Aztec Perspective on Death and Afterlife.) Unlike the Christian Europeans, the
Aztecs did not fear death. ...the Aztecs saw their lives as being. They did not fear death as the
harbinger of judgment, resulting in condemnation or reward. They believed they were collaborators of
the gods, chosen to support and nourish the gods, who were crucial for the survival of the world in
general, and for the flourishing of the Aztec people in particular (Mexico and Death, Modern and

  • 4. The Cold War Era Essay example The Cold War Era Works Cited Missing The late 1940s to the mid 1980s the American society saw what could quite possibly be titled the biggest technological effect on society. This era, The Cold War, was a period in which fear of attack or invasion and a need to be superior reigned in the American society. It led to the development of space technology, during the Space Race, communication systems, and military technology in what has been appropriately deemed the Arms Race. On October 4, 1957 [1] a huge change concerning technology in society occurred. On this date, the United Soviet Socialists Republic (USSR) launched Sputnik into outer space. NASA was not engineering in a new field; the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and other government organizations had been working on the idea of space flight. These organizations were subsequently pulled into NASA upon its creation. [3] The main focus became developing technology that was steady enough and strong enough to support human life in space. The act of simply launching a rocket into space had been achieved over ten years before when Nazi Germany launched its first successful V 2 rocket in October 1942. The V 2 (Vengeance Weapon 2) rocket was built to shoot warheads at targets from a long range. [4] With the disastrous ability of the V 2 in mind, when Sputnik was launched, the fear of ICBMs (Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles) became a very prevalent part of American society. Families built bomb shelters in their backyards and stocked them with non perishable goods to help them sustain life if they were ever attacked. Students and employees practiced air raid drills by crawling under desks and tables. An imminent fear of attack hung heavily in the air causing such historical events as the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The entire era of the Cold War was spurred by a fear of the technology that the opposing country (either Russia or America) possessed; thus, the obvious effect of technology on the society of the times. However, many of the vehicles that end up in ditches or involved in collisions in slippery road conditions are all wheel drive vehicles. The reason for this is a lack of understanding of what all wheel drive can and cannot do. The humiliating defeat of Spain to America during the Spanish American War of 1898 dealt a catastrophic blow to the Spanish nation. In the subsequent Treaty of Paris signed on December 10th 1898, Spain relinquished its remaining colonial territories in the Caribbean and the Pacific. As such, Catalonian regionalist demands tended to assume a subordinate position in relation to the greater demands of Spain and its profitable empire. However, the crisis of 1898 engendered the breaking down of Catalan acquiescence with the Restoration system. In the last decade of the nineteenth century Spanish exports to its colonies had more than doubled from 146.1 million pesatas in 1891 to 365.4 million in 1897, with the value of Catalonian produce to the colonies reaching a peak of 124 million pesatas in 1895. Some people say they don t experience dreaming at all, which is not possible. What they are really saying is that they don t remember their dreams, which is perfectly normal. What many do not realize is that in order to go into a dream state , it can take about thirty minutes. This is considered the rapid eye movement (REM) cycle. During REM sleep, the human brain is just as active as it is if the person was in a conscious state. The length of a dream is determined by how long the person is sleeping. Cognitive theory on dreaming was explored by Calvin Hall, a behavioral psychologist. Hall writes, The images of a dream are the concrete embodiments of the dreamer s thoughts; these images give visual expression to that which is invisible, namely, conceptions ( Calvin Hall and The Cognitive Theory of Dreaming ). Dreams are a way of displaying how we envision the our lives. Hall did a study where he asked his students about their dreams, after studying thousands of them, he came down to what dreams are really about. Hall suggested that the main cognitive structures that dreams reveal include: conceptions of self, others, the world, penalties, or conflict ( Calvin Hall and The Cognitive Theory of Dreaming ). Other studies that have been done about dreaming disclose that it can predict what s next in life. Reports indicate dreams have foretold events upcoming in the dreamer s life, including death. One study reports that 70 percent of women successfully predicted the sex of their unborn child based upon dreams (Dreams Theories of Personality). Michael J. When impregnation does not occur, the endometrium, along with blood and vaginal discharge, leaves the uterus through the vagina, and the cycle repeats itself (Hyde DeLamater, 2014). Nothing of this process indicates any toxicity in women, or any effect on them outside of the physical. It is a monthly biological cycle that occurs in fertile women to prepare for the possibility of conception, and any negative view towards it or the women experiencing it has its source in ignorance, fear, or in the words of books written thousands of years before anyone even had an inkling of how menstruation works. History Without knowing the reason why menstruation occurs, it is a scary idea; a woman, uninjured, begins to bleed for days from the area of childbirth and intercourse every month. It would be easy to relate this occurrence, to something mystical and powerful. The vagina itself has been a thing of mystery, with some cultures considering it to be a channel to the beyond; babies are born through it, and without knowledge of how they develop, some believed that newborns simply came from another plane of existence (Magli, 2009, p. 91). The belief that a woman s body holds a portal to some other world makes it frightening and possibly dangerous, and many traditions have manifested in an attempt to control this supposed power, such as infibulation (cutting the labia so when the tissue heals, it creates a barrier over the vaginal opening) and separation of women ... The Narrative Voice in the Lovely Bones In the novel The Lovely Bones (TLB) by Alice Sebold, the narrative voice is the key technique that hooks the reader and compels him or her to turn over the page. While the author uses a number of other literary techniques to draw the reader in, it is the narrator s voice that is this novel s most interesting and appealing feature. The narrative voice in this novel is unique to other novels because the narrator is a girl named Susie Salmon who is speaking from heaven. This is a distinctive point in the novel because it gives us the story from the perspective from others and we experience themes in the book that we never experienced before. Firstly the narrator of the book TLB is a teenaged girl named Susie Salmon who has been raped at murdered by a man named Mr. Harvey. Susie lived in a small American town and was killed in a cornfield at the age of 14. We know that she is talking from the after life because she tells us from the first page I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973 . She then starts to narrate the novel from the afterlife. This perspective allows us this point of view to experience the narrator and the people she is connected with in a way we have never touched upon before. Susie can tell the mood of a person, what he/she is thinking at the time, what they are going to do next and it s because of the way she can interpret the emotions of other people that makes the narrative voice of this novel it s unique selling point Secondly the narrator ... • 32. A Brief Note On Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Introduction and background Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a surgical procedure performed on patients with coronary artery disease to improve their survival and quality of life. (1) It remains to be the gold standard treatment for patients requiring multivessel coronary revascularization despite recent advances in medical therapies and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). (2) There are two forms of CABG. Traditionally, CABG is performed with a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machine (aka heart lung machine or the pump ) which maintains circulation while the heart is temporarily stopped. (1) This creates a bloodless and motionless operating field for the surgeons. (3) The body is then weaned from CPB and the heart is restarted with the completion of grafting. (1) Alternatively, a relatively newer technique called off pump CABG or beating heart surgery can be performed. With this procedure, CPB is not utilized and the surgeon grafts the blood vessel on the pumping heart after the area around the blocked coronary artery is stabilized. (1) Ever since the introduction of off pump CABG, clinicians all over the world have been interested in finding out whether off pump CABG can help patients avoid the deleterious effects associated with CPB and a large amount of research has been undertaken to investigate the potential advantages of off pump CABG over the conventional on pump CABG. Monoclonal antibodies are pure cultures of antibodies (the body s primary foreign substance detection molecules) artificially produced to react to a single specific substance or protein. By utilizing monoclonal antibodies to treat bacterial infection, we would be flagging the bacteria for the body s immune system to come kill them. As the body already flags bacteria to some extent, all monoclonal antibodies can do is enhance the activity of the immune system, which would be ineffective in people with compromised immune systems.
