Failure of Continental Illinois Bank

Continental Illinois Bank Failure
The failure of Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company (CINB)
One of the most famous features on the landscape of the banking crisis in 1980s was the crisis
involving the Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company in May 1984, which still is one
of the largest bank failures in U.S. banking history. The collapse of CINB was a significant event in
banking history that had a moral for both bank risk managers and regulators. It showed how quickly
the exposure of credit problems at a well regarded bank could turn into a liquidity problem that danger
not only the survival of the bank but also the financial system in the US.

Continental s strategy to greatly rely on such less stable sources of funds for its rapid growth was
ordered by the restraining unit bank law of Illinois. Under the McFadden Act ( Federal legislation that
gave individual states the authority to govern bank branches located within the state. )
(investopedia.com,2008) national banks could not branch outside of their home states and within
states they had to obey the rules of the state branching laws. Illinois law also banned the creation of
multi bank holding companies within the state, thereby restricting all banks within the state to a single
retail office. In name, Continental was a national bank; in fact, it was located in downtown Chicago
and could collect retail deposits only at that location. Therefore, Continental was confined by a very
narrow consumer deposit base and had to fund its ambitious growth plan from less reliable large
institutional or overseas depositors. Uninsured large institutional depositors will continue to provide
funds to a bank as long as they have confidence in the safety and soundness of the institution. In
Continental s case, this confidence was broken in 1982 when market participants began to question the
financial health of the bank. The first problem that came to Continental happened when it was
recognized as the purchaser of $1 billion energy participation loans from the failed Penn

The Battle of Bunker Hill Essay
The Battle of Bunker Hill The battle of Bunker s Hill was one of the most important battles during the
Revolutionary War. On June 17, 1775, the Battle of Bunker Hill took place. Fought during the Siege
of Boston, it lent considerable encouragement to the revolutionary cause. This battle made both sides
realize that this was not going to be a matter decided on by one quick and decisive battle. The battle of
Bunker Hill was not just an unplanned, random attack on British soldiers preformed by a few crazed
colonists. The battle was the result of struggle and hostility between Great Britain and the colonies for
many years. The feelings of angst were due to the simple fact of the taxes the British were placing on
them combined with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These were not the only incidents that caused unrest to exist between the Colonies and the British.
There had been incidents between British soldiers and colonists for some time, due mainly to the
Quartering Act. These incidents finally erupted into the Boston Massacre, an event that resulted in
colonists deaths and more distrust. These feelings of discontent and the growing fear of an uprising
would lead the British to proceed to Lexington and Concord and destroy colonial military supplies.
This left the colonists with the feeling of hatred and total malice towards the British. Neither side
trusted the other, and had concerns that the opposition would launch an attack upon them. When the
British planned to occupy Dorchester Heights on the Boston Peninsula, the colonists became alarmed
at the build up of British troops off the coast. The colonists decided that action had to be taken; they
had to stop the threatening British movement in this territory to protect them from an attack.
It was because of this as well as the many small skirmishes through the years, which would lead the
colonies into a confrontation with the British. The Battle of Bunker Hill started when the colonists
learned about the British plan to occupy Dorchester Heights. The colonists were unnerved by this
news. They, the Colonists

Introduction
In today s fast evolving technological environments, capacity planning is confronted with what may
be the biggest challenge facing capacity planning and management is the migration to cloud
computing. The objective of capacity planning in IT is to provide quality computing services to users
in a way that makes fiscal sense to the company (TeamQuest, 2010). The difficulties introduced by
cloud based structures address the question of whether an organization should use capacity
evaluations. Businesses use these evaluations in making decisions on their needs. Cloud computing is
based on the idea of a shared computing, storage, network, and application resources all provided by a
third party. This paper will explain what motivates a company a company to perform computer
capacity evaluations.
Capacity Planning Challenges
Capacity planning is challenging for many organizations, as there are a whole host of alternatives
available. In the past, the tough decisions were essentially in reference to server capacity. There was
no major issue in having too much capacity. The Cloud is steadily changing technological and
computing environments when it comes to evaluating capacity needs. Before the Cloud, to measure

Contributions Of Albert Einstein
Throughout the ancient times known as history, there have been many influential people. For,
example, individuals influence the world by protesting what is right, discovering something new, or
using their resources to help others with their generosity. Categorically, Albert Einstein is someone
who overshadows all the other influential people in the world. Albert Einstein is influential because of
his accomplishments within all of his awards, his pivotal moments within his career, and his
contributions to society with his inventions.
Albert Einstein is influential because of his very many accomplishments. For example, according to
Anirudh, author of 10 major accomplishments of Albert Einstein, outlines, Einstein received numerous
other awards and honors including Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1926, Matteucci
Medal in 1921, Max Planck Medal in 1929 and Franklin Medal in 1935. In 1999, Time magazine
named Albert Einstein as the Person of the Century. This information shows, that his accomplishment

To Kill A Mockingbird And A Separate Peace By John Knowles
The informed, written analysis and evaluation of a work of literature is known as literary criticism,
which is based on a literary theory. An examples of such a literary theory is intertextual criticism,
involving the comparison of two separate novels. Written by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird is
comparable to A Separate Peace by John Knowles. Both novels are fictitious and showcase universal
symbols, themes, characters, and numerous other literary devices utilized by authors. Similarities
between these two novels are exhibited by the author s use of a tree as a symbol for life and death, the
victim, archetype, and weather as a symbol for change. One reoccurring symbol is the representation
of a tree as a symbol for life and death. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In A Separate Peace, the Super Suicide Society, in which the boys at Devon jumped off the tree into
the creek, serving as a cementation of Gene and Finny s friendship. The activities on the tree provided
an outlet of fun during the boys lives at school and during the war. But, the very same tree led to Finny
s death, and Gene s figurative death, making it a symbol of the contrast between life and death. The
victim archetype is displayed in the characters of both novels. During the trial, Tom says to Mr.
Gilmer, no suh, scared I d hafta face up to what I didn t do (Lee 225). Upon being asked why Tom ran
away if he was innocent, he replies that he didn t want to be wrongfully convicted, which is exactly
what unfolds. Despite his credible testimony and the clear evidence of Bob and Mayella s lies, Tom
must suffer for the wrongdoings of the Ewells, with virtually no escape from his fate. Because of the
instilled prejudice into society, Tom is ostracized by the townspeople. Similarly, Phineas suffers
physically when Gene states that my knees bent and I jounced the limb. Finny...broke through the little
branches below and hit the bank with a sickening, unnatural thud...one of his legs had been shattered
(Knowles 60 61). Overcome by jealousy, Gene causes Finny to suffer through physical pain in the
months to come. Due to someone else s impulsive, but intentional, actions,

The Cost Of An Insurance
Introduction
Insurance in the simplest way is a method of risk transfer that ensures a full compensation in the case
of disaster. It ensures a full or partial compensation for damage from events that the insured has no
control over. In an insurance contract the insured pays a premium to the insurer with the promise that
in case of a loss the insurer will refund the insured and cover the loss or at least part of it. The loss
must not necessarily be financial but it should have the ability to be reduced into financial terms. The
need for insurance arises from uncertain income and risk aversion. A good example of uncertain
income is in the case of agricultural returns. A farmer in a given area cannot be able to ascertain the
harvests for each and every season as anything can happen and it could result to a huge loss.
There are two types of uncertainties; idiosyncratic and aggregate. Idiosyncratic uncertainty affects the
individual for example; sickness while aggregate has its effects on all the individuals for example,
weather. Risk aversion on the other hand generally involves the behavior of people to dislike
variations therefore they would be more than willing to give up some money in order to obtain a
smoother consumption over different places and over time. There are three forms of insurance namely
self insurance, dual insurance, co insurance and reinsurance. Self insurance directly relates to
situations whereby risk is retained by the entities or individuals but not at

There has been a lot of contention on the matter of spies and whistleblowers since the cold war to
today. Recent acts of espionage have the public questioning government, on the acts it has taken with
these widespread criminals. The practice or act of spying to discover military and political secrets of
other nations can also be known as committing espionage. During the cold war many spies sought out
secrets of other countries for military and political information. A few years after the U.S. went into

his wife Ethel was arrested for assisting her husband with his illegal activities. The Rosenberg s were
members of the American Communist Party until they decided to act upon they own illicit activities.
(Casalaspi) They were said to be responsible by Ethel s brother in law, David Greenglass and a
Philadelphia chemist, Harry Gold. After admitting to their own illegal activities Greenglass and Gold

President Eisenhower payed no attention to cynical public opinion, and decided not to pardon the
Rosenberg s. After two years of prison on June 19, 1953 the couple met the electric chair. Following

Essay Analysis of Cousin Kate by Christina Rossetti
Analysis of Cousin Kate by Christina Rossetti
Cousin Kate by Christina Rossetti describes a cottage maiden who was seduced and used by the lord
of the estate for which she worked. She was surprised and taken a back by the fact that someone so
great and powerful could be slightly interested in her, and so she automatically fell in love with him. It
wasn t until after he had slept with her that he left her for her cousin, Kate. The cottage maiden was
devastated that he had done that to her. She felt unclean and unwanted. The lord asked for Kate s hand
in marriage and she accepted.
The cottage maid thought that he married Kate because she was innocent and pure, Because you were

Men would then look down on you in disgust, as would friends and family. The poem demonstrates
how a man can love a woman, then throw her away and move onto another as he pleases, and because
he was a Lord the cottage maiden could not say a thing. This brings into light the difference between
higher and lower class people. If the cottage maiden had said anything, people would not believe her
and turn a blind eye to her and to her accusations. According to the maiden, Kate s love was not real.
O cousin Kate my love was true, your love was writ in sand .
This tells us that Kate s love was going to disappear and was only a temporary emotion which was
later just blown away like writing in the sand, whilst the maiden s love was real. The maiden may just
be saying this for revenge against Cousin Kate to try and make herself feel better but we do not know.
The Lord s love towards the maiden was not real, His plaything and his love . Plaything and love are
two very different contrasts with each other. Did he really love her for a while or was it all just a game
to him? He used her and made her believe that he liked her then left her for Kate.
The maiden was infatuated by the Lord and fell in love with him instantly. He used this, his power and
his wealth against the maiden.
The Lord casts off the female once he meets Kate, who is fairer than the narrator. This shows that
males do not always get emotionally involved in

Situational Irony
The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin contains several literary elements that relate directly to the
theme as a whole. Some elements of this story s theme can be shown in the setting that Chopin
describes as the sky shining through the clouds. It is also reinforced by the situational irony that
occurs when Mrs. Mallard passes away when she receives the news that her husband is still living.
Chopin further relates the theme of independence being forbidden, and that it is imagined privately by
using the point of view to narrate the story. In the story, many different literary elements are used to
create numerous amounts of deep meanings to the story. Kate Chopin describes the setting in The

Mallard dies and Mrs. Mallard begins to cry because of happiness, not out of sadness. This is ironic
because normally when a spouse, or anyone for that matter, passses away people are sad and
devastated; however, Mrs. Mallard shows the exact opposite emotion while alone in her room. When
Mallard was in her room Chapin wrote, But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of
years to come that would belong to her absolutely. (Chopin 15) This quote helps to explain the irony
of how Mrs. Mallard was not distraught about her husband s death. Another example of irony in the
story is when Josephine is worried that Mrs. Mallard has locked herself in her room and is making
herself ill. She s actually in there contemplating how wonderful her life s going to be without her
husband. Mrs. Mallard feels as if she can now live freely and live her life for herself and not her
husband. Irony helps to tie the theme into the story by adding to the meaning of freedom and
independence that Mrs. Mallard thinks she has and

Stephenie Meyer Influence On Religion
On December 24, 1973, Stephenie Meyer was born in Hartford, Connecticut and later raised in
Phoenix, Arizona. Being brought up as a Mormon, she was very religious and was thought of as
intelligent and bright by almost every one of her teachers. In early childhood, she began to read
authors from Emily Dickinson to Shakespeare which influenced her award winning four book series.
Taking themes and similar ideas from the authors that inspired her, Stephenie Meyer brought the love
for vampire thrillers back to life in her series, The Twilight Saga.
Her major works are what make people gravitate towards her. In early June of 2003, Meyer dreamt of

character, Bella, is a mortal girl who finds herself attracted to Edward, a vampire who is always

soon as she finds out, it s all mushy love and action from there. Edward is always trying to protect her,
which what girl doesn t want that in a guy, but while Bella loves that, she is also trying to be
independent and make her own decisions. Meyer does an outstanding job of making the reader feel
what Bella is feeling throughout the entire series. I believe she does the best in New Moon when
Edward leaves Bella because he thinks he is hurting her and robbing her of her humanity. He feared
she would one day want to become a vampire and didn t wish that for her, he didn t even wish that for
himself. With that thought, he left her at once. Meyer took the reader through how Bella coped with
the loss of Edward and what she did to keep her from thinking about him. People may not have gone
through something this dramatic, but it s a relatable topic which is why people gravitate toward this
series. People also love to see the love story unravel with all the obstacles they have to face in order to
be together in the end. While reading and anticipating, the reader sees the two characters fall in love
and grow up. I think the whole Twilight

Fossil fuels are a fuel that was formed over millions of years from organic material from forms of life.

Drunk Driving Is More Precious Than Anything Else
Drunk Driving

Drunk Driving
Life is more precious than anything else, and everybody would love to live to the fullest. In life, there
are decisions that people make that can shorten their lives. Though it s argued that life is under God s
control, there is no doubt that there exist self inflicted injuries that shorten life on earth. The decisions
people make therefore have dire consequences on their life. To drink and drive is an example of such
courageous decisions with profound effects in people s life. The ultimate price for drunk driving is an
accident, and the legal consequence is jail. It s illegal to drink and drive even though people still
engage in the act (Carpenter, 2004). This, therefore, calls for more stringent and tougher rules to help
curb the habit. There is the need to review the current laws and regulations to check on the rate of
drunken driving failure to which more lives will be lost at an unexpected time.
There are several reasons as to why drunk driving should not be encouraged. First and foremost, when
one is under the influence of alcohol, their ability to make a sound judgment decreases. One becomes
subconscious, and this limits the capacity to think and act when required. The ultimate consequence is
that the driver is likely to lose control of the vehicle and when that happens, loss of lives, injuries, and
loss of property will be inevitable. The alcohol makes drivers unpredictable with regards to decision

In 2007 the company entered an open beta phase using flash. Three years later Wix had three million
users (April 2010), a year later (March 2011) they had over eight million users and its total funding
had hit sixty one million dollars. Exactly a year later (March 2012), Wix had replaced the current use
of flash to a new HTML5 site builder. Websites created before this implementation still worked using
flash, but all new sites were created using the new HTML5 builder. This change proved to be
incredibly successful, showing an overall usage of more than twenty five million users as well as
generating more than sixty million dollars in 2012. By August 2014, more than fifty one million users
throughout 190 countries have used Wix with roughly 45,000 new users a day.

Flash websites have always been popular with artists because they display images beautifully.
Unfortunately, Apple s mobile devices and Adobe s Android do not support a Flash Player needed to

Persuasive Essay On Animal Shelters
Animal Shelters have been the source of many rescued domesticated animals. Receiving about 8 10
million animals a year, they are important in keeping stray and abandoned dogs and cats off the streets
in order to give them a safe and loving new home. According to the American Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), 47% of dogs and 42% of cats are rehomed (ASPCA.org).
However, what happens to the other 53 58% of those animals that were not given a new home? Well,
many of the animals left will be in the shelter trying to gain the attention of a fitting new owner
excited with the thought of adopting them. However, after many months, the shelters become
overpopulated with the number of dogs and cats that enter the compound leaving the shelter no choice
but to remove the older animals by way of euthanasia. Euthanizing these animals are a way to
decrease the surplus population roaming the streets and in the shelters. Although euthanasia may be
called for in some cases, such as old age or terminally ill animals, it is inhumane to euthanize perfectly
healthy ones for the sake of space and controlled population sizes. Overpopulation is one of the top
reasons for animals being euthanized in shelters. About 1.5 million sheltered animals are euthanized
annually due to overpopulation, illnesses, or behavior (ASPCA.org). In order to prevent the amount of
euthanizations in shelters, domestic animal populations have to be controlled to some extent. There are

Rookie quarterback Joe Montana was under center ready to start the play with 56 seconds left in the
game. The pass was intended for Fred Solomon but was fully covered by the Cowboy s defense. Being
chased by legendary linemen, Montana back pedaled toward the sideline, and it was almost certain
that he would either go out of bounds or he would get sacked. By a miracle, Montana pump faked and
threw the ball to the back of the end zone; where Clark was reaching at full extension to make the
catch. This play would go down in history known as The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of an injury Walsh was working with an inexperienced player he, installed a new offensive

1978 the 49ers were in the worst possible situation any professional team can face in sports. They
were considered the worst team in sports, not just football. Bill Walsh knew something needed to be

STD s and STI s in NYC
Sexually transmitted disease is defined as in infection passed from one person to another through
sexual contact, according to the Health reference article, STDs; What They Are and How to Prevent
Them. Approximately, 19 million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases are found every year.
Sexually transmitted diseases are most easily spread by having vaginal, oral, or anal sex. Shaking
hands hugging or simply touching are not really ways to transmit sexually transmitted diseases.
Research shows that most sexually transmitted diseases are transmitted through the mucous

The Breakdown Of The Titanic Disaster
Titanic Imagine going on what is supposed to be a magnificent vacation, but turns out to be a
horrendous disaster. The titanic was the biggest man made ship and was supposed to be an unsinkable
ship. Work began in 1909 in the massive Harland and Wolff yard. Titanic continued nonstop until the
spring of 1911. There was peace and the world had an even tenor to its way. Nothing was revealed the
morning the trend of which was not known the night before. It seems to me the disaster about to occur
was the event that not only made the world rub it s eyes and awake but woke it with a start keeping it
moving at a rapidly accelerating pace ever since with less and less peace, satisfaction, and happiness.
To my mind the world of today awoke April 15, 1912. Jack B. Thayer a titanic survivor. There were
many flaws in the design of the titanic. The titanic was doomed from the start because of the design.

The Trials of Changing Tradition in Shirley Jones´ The...
Tradition is an answer to how peoples live their lives. For many it is a social norm, how they have
lived culturally for several generations. Despite the significance of tradition in many societies, it can
still be very harmful to the people involved. Tradition doesn t necessarily have to have a positive
feature for many folks. In the end tradition could cause more harm than it is meant for good. Thus it is
really important to change traditional values of communities to improve the quality of life for many

Story Of An Hour Critical Analysis
The Story Of An Hour, by Kate Chopin, is a short story about a woman who is mourning the death of
her husband at the beginning of the story. She finds out that he s dead from a misleading newspaper
article. Suddenly a overwhelming feeling of happiness surrounds her aura and she is enlightened. It
was an experience that some would say a self realization, she was not happy with the marriage she is
trapped in and was content of the fall of her husband. Even though a woman without her man is seen
as dependent and not very respectable, it didn t bother her. She was free and that s all that mattered to
her. As the story goes on Louise the wife who has lost her husband wasn t able to compose her
emotion, too much was happening to a woman with a weak heart . As the story comes to an end there
is a sudden knock on the door, Louise was on her knees and in terrible shape. Surprisely, at the door
was Louise s husband. Louise had a fragile heart and couldn t take the pressure she was dealt with, it
turns out her heart died at the sight of her own husband. Chopin portrays how oppressive the
patriarchal expectations were for women at the time.
To being women were expected to obey their husband. Although Louise loved her husband, it was
more like her being a prisoner to her husband. When she experiences the self realization of her being
free, she gets rid of those shackles and is joyful. She thought to herself free, free, free! (Chopin 161 ).
Once she realizes her new situation,

Value of Philosophy Essay
Philosophy is the study of examining and thinking about questionable ethical problems and/or

fields as well as convictions, prejudices and beliefs.
What is Russell s essay about? Present Russell s position in your own words.
Bertrand Russell s essay addresses many issues concerning philosophy. In the writing, he states
philosophy s nature, value, and criticisms. The essay explains these aspects of the study of philosophy
in relatively different ways. The main idea for establishing value in his essay is by explaining how it is
best obtained, and its effect on other people. The essay continues with his criticisms of those who

It states that even though philosophy doesn t give us a certainty of true answers, it suggests many
possibilities which enlarge our thoughts and free them from tyranny of custom. He also supports the
idea that philosophy is beneficial because it enriches intellectual imagination . The essay brings up the
points of the practical man, and why they are at a loss of intellectual imagination because they don t
explore the unknown by viewing life as simple. As evidence, he uses an example of mass disease and
poverty of a society. The theory is that in those conditions, there would still be much to be improved
to produce a valuable society. Even if the society has the proper food supplies, they need the goods of
the mind (knowledge) to build a well governed society. He believes practical men undermine that
aspect, thereby explaining their lack of intellectual imagination. The next argument is that philosophy
saves us from convictions, prejudices, and cultural beliefs. The affect that that has on a person is to
open up a fresh prospective with very little bias. He believed for this to be beneficial to people
socially, by developing empathy which helps you understand others points of view. That theory goes
hand in hand and gives a fine segway to his fourth and final argument of the freedom and equity
learned from philosophical contemplation reflecting in your personality (action and emotion). The

Military Officer
In your opinion, should the Director of National Intelligence be a civilian or a military officer? Why?
This is a interesting question, after thinking about the pros and cons of whether the Director of
National Intelligence (DNI) should be military or civilian I have come to the conclusion that it is best
that the directorship should be civilian. I come to this conclusion based on this weeks discussion
question being that it is based on the hypothetical scenario in its nature meaning that the DNI currently
is housed by a civilian Mr. James R. Clapper. The position of DNI has a history of predominantly
being occupied by civilians, even though like the current director most of the directors come from

An example of separation of powers in the matter of national security for instance one might assume
because of its nature that the United States nuclear weapons stockpile is both maintained and
purchased by its respective or individual branches of the military or at the very least the Department of
Defense, however this is not true in fact the nations nuclear deterrent is handled by the Department of
Energy (the Department of Energy is under the Office of the Director of National Intelligence) as it
was seen that the control of nuclear weapons should always be in the hands of the civilian branch of
the United States government (Atomic Energy Act in 1946 signed by president Harry S. Truman). It
does go without saying that there could be advantages that a military officer in assuming the role of
the directorship of national intelligence, however even though he or she may be a far superior
candidate for the position I believe that they would have one hand tied behind their back with both
congressional oversight and being subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ)
particularly with world events being fluid and readily unpredictable and sometimes dissensions that

The Effects Of Video Games On Society And Corrupts...
Video games have been the subject of many criticisms throughout the years. One of the main
criticisms is that violence in video games causes violence in society and corrupts children and young
adults into doing bad things. A game series that is constantly in the spotlight of this criticism is none
other than the Rockstar Games series Grand Theft Auto. The most recent implementation in the
popular franchise is GTA V, which follows three main protagonists throughout their daily lives and
involvements in various crime scenarios. GTA is known to take a satirical stance and take jabs at
America and crime culture as a whole. So, within a game that is a parody of society and the vices of
humanity, it is not fair to say that this game is the cause of social violence. Themes such as torture as a
means to gain information, psychopathy, murder and other blue collar crimes can be seen throughout
the game. There are many criticisms due to these heavy themes, but in the end, every concept covered
in this game merely reinforces and parodies those of today s world.
Easily the most talked about and news media covered story related to this game is the torture scene in
GTAV. In the mission By the Book , the player controls one of the main characters, Trevor, and is
forced to torture a seemingly innocent man in order to gain information to assassinate a person of
interest for the FIB (Federal Investigation Bureau, parody of the FBI) in a graphic scene containing

Rocket Launcher Lab Report
In this lab, it was found that the rocket launcher can be launched in many different ways. It was found
that the rocket launcher flights higher or goes further with the less amount of clay. I believe that that s
right because the more you add clay, the more it makes it heavier. When I put 1.49 grams of clay, it
turned out to be 16 meters and that was the highest. The experiment was completed using clay, rocket
launcher, and a measuring wheel. These materials are used in order to see what happens when it flies
higher. My hypothesis was right because I said that if we put the least amount of clay in the straw, it
will go further. It was proven right because putting less clay on a straw would make it less heavy and
lighter. The procedure shows every step, for example, you need to put 1.49 grams of clay on the

The one that went further was the 16 meter one which is the one with the less clay on it. In this lab, we
are trying to test different variables in order to figure out which one will fly further. We had to drop
weight from a high thing. This is what made it fly further. The experiment results showed that the less
cay you put, the further it will go. I believe this is right because if we add a lot of clay onto the straw,
it will add more weight to the straw, therefore, it will fall easily. So in the end, the straw with 1.49
grams of clay flew the furthest than all of them. The pattern was for every trial the less clay one

Isolation In Sinclair Ross s The Painted Door
Sukarno, first president of Indonesia, in office from 1945 to 1967, conveys, The worst cruelty that can
be inflicted on a human being is isolation . In other words, Sukarno believes that seclusion is the
greatest punishment an individual can receive. Often, people are affected by isolation on the mental
and emotional levels. Individuals begin to perceive situations differently and are influenced to make
shameful choices. For example, in Sinclair Ross s short story, The Painted Door, the main character,
Ann, lives her life in isolation from most of society. Ann is a young and caring woman living on a
farm with her husband, John. They are facing troubles in their marriage, since their ideals of a
fulfilling life differ from one another. Her husband is set to travel seventeen miles to assist his aging
father on the farm. Ann is against John s voyage because the storm brewing risks his safety and would
leave her alone to care for the animals. However, John is able to convince her by inviting a friend to
come over for dinner and promising her that he will return at supper to join them; the circumstance
fuels a night of lonesome emotions that propels her to commit a remorseful decision. One might argue
that the author uses the narrative archetype of The Fallen Woman, irony, and symbolism, to suggest,
that isolation leads an individual to question her values and commit regrettable decisions.

Red Cabbage PH Indicator
Did you know that, instead having to buy expensive PH indicators, you can just use the juice from red
cabbages? In this experiment, I will see how red cabbage can go from side dish to science. My
hypothesis is that the color of red cabbage will change color based on a reaction with different
substances to indicate whether it is an acid or base. According to the page madsci.org, red cabbage
contains a pigment called anthocyanin. this pigment changes its structure and its reaction to light
depending on the acidity of its environment. For this experiment, I only needed a few typical

It is important that the liquid is allowed to cool to room temperature so that residual heat doesn t affect
the PH readings. Now I have a homemade PH Indicator!
Using an eyedropper, I added a few drops of the indicator into each of my substances and viewed the
color changes through the clear plastic cups. I used the chart below to determine each substances PH
level by matching its colour to the chart below. The lower the PH level the more acidic, so a violet red
color is highly acidic; whereas a yellow color is highly basic.
I tested a few of the most common substances used in daily life: milk, soda, lemon juice and bleach.
My results are the following: In my first test, I tried testing the PH level of milk. I first thought that
milk would be basic, but after dripping some of the cabbage mixture into it, I discovered that it was
light blue, which means that it was actually slightly acidic! After researching this, I found that this is
true because milk contains lactic acid, which is responsible for the sour flavor of sourdough breads.

Methods and tools for studying children
This essay is a continuation to a previous assignment which discussed how attitudes towards studying
children have changed. In this child participation, child voice and consent were identified as three key
principles researchers should aspire to when studying children. This essay therefore intends to extend
upon these principles by identifying an approach and research tool which will effectively incorporate
all principles within a research study.
The context of the research study is a male adult and male child sat at a potter s wheel modelling clay.
The aim of the study is to observe and assess the child s level of cognitive development during an
interactive period with an adult who is using the technique of scaffolding (Wood, Bruner, ... Show

To overcome this problem the child will be encouraged to pause the video at intervals they wished to
talk about, thus the recording becomes more representable of a learning story; as the child could help
to produce still images of the video and place their comments under the individual pictures. Although
time consuming this process is very important as it not only encourages child participation and strong
voice of the child, it also reinforces the authenticity of the overall research as the perspective of the
child is being gained. This is an important factor as observers do not always interpret observations
correctly as people see and interpret things differently (Hobart and Frankel, 2004) and although it is
said the camera never lies, it may be distorted (Sharman, Cross and Vennis, 2006)
By blending the method of a written narrative with aspects of the mosaic approach not only will a
detailed observation be obtained but arguably an observation with substance; as professionals do not

Failure of Continental Illinois Bank International Business School Continental Illinois Bank Failure The failure of Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company (CINB) One of the most famous features on the landscape of the banking crisis in 1980s was the crisis involving the Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company in May 1984, which still is one of the largest bank failures in U.S. banking history. The collapse of CINB was a significant event in banking history that had a moral for both bank risk managers and regulators. It showed how quickly the exposure of credit problems at a well regarded bank could turn into a liquidity problem that danger not only the survival of the bank but also the financial system in the US. Economic and financial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Continental s strategy to greatly rely on such less stable sources of funds for its rapid growth was ordered by the restraining unit bank law of Illinois. Under the McFadden Act ( Federal legislation that gave individual states the authority to govern bank branches located within the state. ) (investopedia.com,2008) national banks could not branch outside of their home states and within states they had to obey the rules of the state branching laws. Illinois law also banned the creation of multi bank holding companies within the state, thereby restricting all banks within the state to a single retail office. In name, Continental was a national bank; in fact, it was located in downtown Chicago and could collect retail deposits only at that location. In Continental s case, this confidence was broken in 1982 when market participants began to question the financial health of the bank. The first problem that came to Continental happened when it was recognized as the purchaser of $1 billion energy participation loans from the failed Penn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On June 17, 1775, the Battle of Bunker Hill took place. Fought during the Siege of Boston, it lent considerable encouragement to the revolutionary cause. This battle made both sides realize that this was not going to be a matter decided on by one quick and decisive battle. The battle of Bunker Hill was not just an unplanned, random attack on British soldiers preformed by a few crazed colonists. The battle was the result of struggle and hostility between Great Britain and the colonies for many years. The feelings of angst were due to the simple fact of the taxes the British were placing on them combined with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These were not the only incidents that caused unrest to exist between the Colonies and the British. There had been incidents between British soldiers and colonists for some time, due mainly to the Quartering Act. These incidents finally erupted into the Boston Massacre, an event that resulted in colonists deaths and more distrust. These feelings of discontent and the growing fear of an uprising would lead the British to proceed to Lexington and Concord and destroy colonial military supplies. This left the colonists with the feeling of hatred and total malice towards the British. Neither side trusted the other, and had concerns that the opposition would launch an attack upon them. When the British planned to occupy Dorchester Heights on the Boston Peninsula, the colonists became alarmed at the build up of British troops off the coast. The colonists decided that action had to be taken; they had to stop the threatening British movement in this territory to protect them from an attack. It was because of this as well as the many small skirmishes through the years, which would lead the colonies into a confrontation with the British. The Battle of Bunker Hill started when the colonists learned about the British plan to occupy Dorchester Heights. The colonists were unnerved by this news. They, the Colonists ... To Kill A Mockingbird And A Separate Peace By John Knowles The informed, written analysis and evaluation of a work of literature is known as literary criticism, which is based on a literary theory. An examples of such a literary theory is intertextual criticism, involving the comparison of two separate novels. Written by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird is comparable to A Separate Peace by John Knowles. Both novels are fictitious and showcase universal symbols, themes, characters, and numerous other literary devices utilized by authors. Similarities between these two novels are exhibited by the author s use of a tree as a symbol for life and death, the victim, archetype, and weather as a symbol for change. • 8. The Cost Of An Insurance Introduction Insurance in the simplest way is a method of risk transfer that ensures a full compensation in the case of disaster. It ensures a full or partial compensation for damage from events that the insured has no control over. In an insurance contract the insured pays a premium to the insurer with the promise that in case of a loss the insurer will refund the insured and cover the loss or at least part of it. The loss must not necessarily be financial but it should have the ability to be reduced into financial terms. The need for insurance arises from uncertain income and risk aversion. A good example of uncertain income is in the case of agricultural returns. A farmer in a given area cannot be able to ascertain the harvests for each and every season as anything can happen and it could result to a huge loss. There are two types of uncertainties; idiosyncratic and aggregate. Idiosyncratic uncertainty affects the individual for example; sickness while aggregate has its effects on all the individuals for example, weather. Risk aversion on the other hand generally involves the behavior of people to dislike variations therefore they would be more than willing to give up some money in order to obtain a smoother consumption over different places and over time. There are three forms of insurance namely self insurance, dual insurance, co insurance and reinsurance. Essay Analysis of Cousin Kate by Christina Rossetti Analysis of Cousin Kate by Christina Rossetti Cousin Kate by Christina Rossetti describes a cottage maiden who was seduced and used by the lord of the estate for which she worked. She was surprised and taken a back by the fact that someone so great and powerful could be slightly interested in her, and so she automatically fell in love with him. It wasn t until after he had slept with her that he left her for her cousin, Kate. The cottage maiden was devastated that he had done that to her. She felt unclean and unwanted. Men would then look down on you in disgust, as would friends and family. The poem demonstrates how a man can love a woman, then throw her away and move onto another as he pleases, and because he was a Lord the cottage maiden could not say a thing. This brings into light the difference between higher and lower class people. If the cottage maiden had said anything, people would not believe her and turn a blind eye to her and to her accusations. According to the maiden, Kate s love was not real. O cousin Kate my love was true, your love was writ in sand . This tells us that Kate s love was going to disappear and was only a temporary emotion which was later just blown away like writing in the sand, whilst the maiden s love was real. The maiden may just be saying this for revenge against Cousin Kate to try and make herself feel better but we do not know. The Lord s love towards the maiden was not real, His plaything and his love . Plaything and love are two very different contrasts with each other. Did he really love her for a while or was it all just a game to him? He used her and made her believe that he liked her then left her for Kate. The maiden was infatuated by the Lord and fell in love with him instantly. He used this, his power and his wealth against the maiden. When Mallard was in her room Chapin wrote, But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. Another example of irony in the story is when Josephine is worried that Mrs. Mallard has locked herself in her room and is making herself ill. She s actually in there contemplating how wonderful her life s going to be without her husband. Mrs. Mallard feels as if she can now live freely and live her life for herself and not her husband. • 18. Drunk Driving Is More Precious Than Anything Else Drunk Driving Denis Pichardo Miami Dade College Drunk Driving Life is more precious than anything else, and everybody would love to live to the fullest. In life, there are decisions that people make that can shorten their lives. Though it s argued that life is under God s control, there is no doubt that there exist self inflicted injuries that shorten life on earth. The decisions people make therefore have dire consequences on their life. To drink and drive is an example of such courageous decisions with profound effects in people s life. The ultimate price for drunk driving is an accident, and the legal consequence is jail. It s illegal to drink and drive even though people still engage in the act (Carpenter, 2004). This, therefore, calls for more stringent and tougher rules to help curb the habit. There is the need to review the current laws and regulations to check on the rate of drunken driving failure to which more lives will be lost at an unexpected time. There are several reasons as to why drunk driving should not be encouraged. First and foremost, when one is under the influence of alcohol, their ability to make a sound judgment decreases. One becomes subconscious, and this limits the capacity to think and act when required. The ultimate consequence is that the driver is likely to lose control of the vehicle and when that happens, loss of lives, injuries, and loss of property will be inevitable. The alcohol makes drivers unpredictable with regards to decision ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), 47% of dogs and 42% of cats are rehomed (ASPCA.org). However, what happens to the other 53 58% of those animals that were not given a new home? Well, many of the animals left will be in the shelter trying to gain the attention of a fitting new owner excited with the thought of adopting them. However, after many months, the shelters become overpopulated with the number of dogs and cats that enter the compound leaving the shelter no choice but to remove the older animals by way of euthanasia. Euthanizing these animals are a way to decrease the surplus population roaming the streets and in the shelters. Although euthanasia may be called for in some cases, such as old age or terminally ill animals, it is inhumane to euthanize perfectly healthy ones for the sake of space and controlled population sizes. Overpopulation is one of the top reasons for animals being euthanized in shelters. For many it is a social norm, how they have lived culturally for several generations. Despite the significance of tradition in many societies, it can still be very harmful to the people involved. Tradition doesn t necessarily have to have a positive feature for many folks. In the end tradition could cause more harm than it is meant for good. Thus it is really important to change traditional values of communities to improve the quality of life for many people. • 32. Story Of An Hour Critical Analysis The Story Of An Hour, by Kate Chopin, is a short story about a woman who is mourning the death of her husband at the beginning of the story. She finds out that he s dead from a misleading newspaper article. Suddenly a overwhelming feeling of happiness surrounds her aura and she is enlightened. It was an experience that some would say a self realization, she was not happy with the marriage she is trapped in and was content of the fall of her husband. Even though a woman without her man is seen as dependent and not very respectable, it didn t bother her. She was free and that s all that mattered to her. As the story goes on Louise the wife who has lost her husband wasn t able to compose her emotion, too much was happening to a woman with a weak heart . As the story comes to an end there is a sudden knock on the door, Louise was on her knees and in terrible shape. Surprisely, at the door was Louise s husband. Louise had a fragile heart and couldn t take the pressure she was dealt with, it turns out her heart died at the sight of her own husband. Chopin portrays how oppressive the patriarchal expectations were for women at the time. To being women were expected to obey their husband. Although Louise loved her husband, it was more like her being a prisoner to her husband. When she experiences the self realization of her being free, she gets rid of those shackles and is joyful. She thought to herself free, free, free! (Chopin 161 ). Once she realizes her new situation, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Bertrand Russell s essay addresses many issues concerning philosophy. In the writing, he states philosophy s nature, value, and criticisms. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It states that even though philosophy doesn t give us a certainty of true answers, it suggests many possibilities which enlarge our thoughts and free them from tyranny of custom. He also supports the idea that philosophy is beneficial because it enriches intellectual imagination . The essay brings up the points of the practical man, and why they are at a loss of intellectual imagination because they don t explore the unknown by viewing life as simple. As evidence, he uses an example of mass disease and poverty of a society. The theory is that in those conditions, there would still be much to be improved to produce a valuable society. Even if the society has the proper food supplies, they need the goods of the mind (knowledge) to build a well governed society. He believes practical men undermine that aspect, thereby explaining their lack of intellectual imagination. The next argument is that philosophy saves us from convictions, prejudices, and cultural beliefs. The affect that that has on a person is to open up a fresh prospective with very little bias. He believed for this to be beneficial to people socially, by developing empathy which helps you understand others points of view. That theory goes hand in hand and gives a fine segway to his fourth and final argument of the freedom and equity learned from philosophical contemplation reflecting in your personality (action and emotion). This is a interesting question, after thinking about the pros and cons of whether the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) should be military or civilian I have come to the conclusion that it is best that the directorship should be civilian. I come to this conclusion based on this weeks discussion question being that it is based on the hypothetical scenario in its nature meaning that the DNI currently is housed by a civilian Mr. James R. Clapper. The position of DNI has a history of predominantly being occupied by civilians, even though like the current director most of the directors come from military careers upon retirement or separation ... It does go without saying that there could be advantages that a military officer in assuming the role of the directorship of national intelligence, however even though he or she may be a far superior candidate for the position I believe that they would have one hand tied behind their back with both congressional oversight and being subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) particularly with world events being fluid and readily unpredictable and sometimes dissensions that must be made would have to be in a gray area that military personal are prevented from ... • 35. The Effects Of Video Games On Society And Corrupts... Video games have been the subject of many criticisms throughout the years. One of the main criticisms is that violence in video games causes violence in society and corrupts children and young adults into doing bad things. A game series that is constantly in the spotlight of this criticism is none other than the Rockstar Games series Grand Theft Auto. The most recent implementation in the popular franchise is GTA V, which follows three main protagonists throughout their daily lives and involvements in various crime scenarios. GTA is known to take a satirical stance and take jabs at America and crime culture as a whole. So, within a game that is a parody of society and the vices of humanity, it is not fair to say that this game is the cause of social violence. Themes such as torture as a means to gain information, psychopathy, murder and other blue collar crimes can be seen throughout the game. There are many criticisms due to these heavy themes, but in the end, every concept covered in this game merely reinforces and parodies those of today s world. Easily the most talked about and news media covered story related to this game is the torture scene in GTAV. In the mission By the Book , the player controls one of the main characters, Trevor, and is forced to torture a seemingly innocent man in order to gain information to assassinate a person of interest for the FIB (Federal Investigation Bureau, parody of the FBI) in a graphic scene containing removal of teeth, smashing ... It was found that the rocket launcher flights higher or goes further with the less amount of clay. I believe that that s right because the more you add clay, the more it makes it heavier. When I put 1.49 grams of clay, it turned out to be 16 meters and that was the highest. The experiment was completed using clay, rocket launcher, and a measuring wheel. These materials are used in order to see what happens when it flies higher. My hypothesis was right because I said that if we put the least amount of clay in the straw, it will go further. Isolation In Sinclair Ross s The Painted Door Sukarno, first president of Indonesia, in office from 1945 to 1967, conveys, The worst cruelty that can be inflicted on a human being is isolation . In other words, Sukarno believes that seclusion is the greatest punishment an individual can receive. Often, people are affected by isolation on the mental and emotional levels. Individuals begin to perceive situations differently and are influenced to make shameful choices. For example, in Sinclair Ross s short story, The Painted Door, the main character, Ann, lives her life in isolation from most of society. Ann is a young and caring woman living on a farm with her husband, John. They are facing troubles in their marriage, since their ideals of a fulfilling life differ from one another. Her husband is set to travel seventeen miles to assist his aging father on the farm. Ann is against John s voyage because the storm brewing risks his safety and would leave her alone to care for the animals. However, John is able to convince her by inviting a friend to come over for dinner and promising her that he will return at supper to join them; the circumstance fuels a night of lonesome emotions that propels her to commit a remorseful decision. One might argue that the author uses the narrative archetype of The Fallen Woman, irony, and symbolism, to suggest, that isolation leads an individual to question her values and commit regrettable decisions. To overcome this problem the child will be encouraged to pause the video at intervals they wished to talk about, thus the recording becomes more representable of a learning story; as the child could help to produce still images of the video and place their comments under the individual pictures. Although time consuming this process is very important as it not only encourages child participation and strong voice of the child, it also reinforces the authenticity of the overall research as the perspective of the child is being gained. This is an important factor as observers do not always interpret observations correctly as people see and interpret things differently (Hobart and Frankel, 2004) and although it is said the camera never lies, it may be distorted (Sharman, Cross and Vennis, 2006) By blending the method of a written narrative with aspects of the mosaic approach not only will a detailed observation be obtained but arguably an observation with substance; as professionals do not have to take the evaluation of the observation at face value, the data is there and available for them to examine. The child actively engaging with the research study also adds another dimension, as the actual views and actions of the participant are documented, arguably when research is conducted via surveys, questionnaires and even interviews the data collected is constrained to the ...
