Alfred Tennyson was a 19th century English poet who served as Poet Laureate of Great Britain for over 40 years. He was born in 1809 in Lincolnshire and came from a family with a history of mental illness. He befriended Arthur Henry Hallam at Cambridge, but Hallam's early death had a profound impact on Tennyson and inspired some of his best known works like In Memoriam. Tennyson struggled with periods of mental breakdown but found success with his poetry. He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1850 and lived a long life, passing away in 1892.
