Browning as a poet
Browning is one of the greatest poets of the Victorian age .But
he has never been favored by the many though he is intensely
admired by the few. One of the most striking features of his work
is its enormous variety. He gives us poems on art and music,
stories of adventure, glimpses of life of the ancients as well as
the modern world. He wrote with equal facility short lyrics and
long dramatic monologues. Broadly speaking he has a threefold
appeal. First he is a psychological poet, secondly he is a
passionate singer of love, and thirdly he is a strong believer in
philosophy of optimism. Browning dominant interest as a poet is
the study of human mind and soul. He is not so much concerned
with out word action as within word or mental life. His poems
have been called the soul studies. He represents the minds of his
characters and tries to reveal their working with all their
subtleties. He is a great analyst of human mind. What he gives us
is a great psychological portrait of men and women.
He chooses his characters from different lands, from different
periods of times, and from different spheres of activity. A monk,
a priest, a painter, a physician, a duke, a scholar, a musician etc.
To him love is the one thing that makes life worth living.
Browning philosophy of love is partly expressed in the following
lines from
EVELYN HOPE “
No indeed for God above
Is great to grant as might to make,
And creates the love to reward.
That is to say love never goes in vain. Browning lovers have been
called splendid fellows because when rejected they do not
lament or curse their beloveds. The lover in “The Last Ride
Together” feels actually proud of his beloved for having
rejected him because he thinks himself as yet unworthy of her
love. The problems of the nature of art and the artist, their
relation to the world and society and their concern with ethics
and the religion found their way again and again in his poems.
Fra Lippo Lippi, the irrepressible realist who is of the to paint
things as he sees them. Fra lippo Lippi expresses Browning
optimism when he says that life means “intensely” to him and
that it means “good”. Browning being a optimist that the good
preponderates over the evil in the world. The famous epilogue to
Asolando is an excellent expression of Browning optimistic belief.
Browning interest centers in man and man’s relation to universe.
Hence his love of ethical and religious speculation. What is the
purpose of life? What is to follow hereafter? What is the relation
between man and God? In Memorian, Christian Eves, The Ring
and the Book are the portrayal of it.
