2. Technical Textile
The Textile Institute defines technical textiles as the 'textile
materials and products manufactured primarily for their technical
and performance properties rather than their aesthetic or decorative
characteristics '.
Technical Textiles has never been a single consistent industrial
sector and market segment as it is continuously developing in
different directions with varying speed and varying degree of
success. The development of emerging geographical markets in
China(Chinese textile) and other global industrial regions actively
contributes in influencing the rapid growth of technical textile
manufacturing in this century.
The term 'Industrial textile(link) was widely used for years to refer
to any sort of textile product other than apparels, household or
furnishing products. With the increasing textile application in the
diverging fields of medicine, hygiene, sports, transport, agriculture
and other non industrial purposes. Industrial textiles are
categorized as a sub group of technical textiles and it specially
comprises of those particular textile products which are utilized in
the operational procedure of manufacturing.
Technical and industrial textiles relate both to kinds of
products and to the application of textiles to particular uses.
Examples of technical textiles products are high tenacity yarns,
or special elastic or coated fabrics, all of which have high
technology content. As far as industrial applications are
concerned, textile-based articles can offer considerable
performance advantages compared to other materials.
The sector of technical textile has experienced a spectacular
increase during last years. Technical textiles consumption has
increased worldwide by about 20% in volume, between 2000 and
2005. Cars and the transport industry, furniture, medical
3. applications, clothing and construction are important users of
technical and industrial textiles.
Given that innovation in new materials, processes and products is
an inherent feature of this sub-sector, expenditure on research and
development (R&D) is higher in this field than for 'conventional'
textiles (reaching up to 8-10% of turnover, compared to the
industrial average of 3-5%). In the development of fibres, yarns
and fabrics, functional aspects - such as anti-bacterial, anti-static,
UV protective, thermal, or biodegradable functions - are playing an
increasingly important role. Performance requirements and
technical specifications determine the success of a product.
Usually, technical textiles are created in a close relationship
between the producer and the consumer so as to ensure tailor-made
solutions to specific user purposes.
Technical textiles are usually applied in the
following 12 main areas:
o Agrotech comprises of agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture
and forestry
o Buildtech comprises of building and construction
o Clothtech comprises of technical components of footwear
and clothing.
o Geotech comprises of technical components of geotextiles
and civil engineering
o Hometech comprises of technical components of furniture,
household textiles and floor coverings.
o Indutech comprises of filtration, conveying, cleaning and
other industrial uses
o Medtech comprises of medical field and hygiene
o Mobiltech comprises of automobiles, shipping, railways and
aerospace
o Oekotech comprises of environmental protection
4. o Packtech comprises of packaging
o Protech comprises of personal and property protection
o Sporttech comprises of sports and leisure
Technical textiles in various contexts are often referred to as
performance textiles or functional textiles or engineered textiles or
high-tech textiles.
Technical Textile fiber:
Almost 90 % of the fibers(link to textile fabric) utilized to make
technical textiles belong to the category of conventional fibers and
the fibers specially developed to specifically use in technical
textiles are not only expensive but often have limited applications.
Technical Textile products:
Within the composites industry, woven, knitted braided, non
woven(link) and wound reinforcements produced from glass,
carbon fiber and organic polymer materials like aramids are
presently accepted as technical textile products.
