Teachers’ maxims in language teaching

Editor's Notes

  1. A maxim is a rule for good or sensible behavior. Teachers maxims are closely connected with their philosophies of teaching which teachers develop from their experience of teaching and learning, and from their own beliefs and value systems.
  2. Celia is an ESL teacher in Hong Kong. She believes strongly that teachers’ attitudes in the classroom are very important in creating a supportive learning environment for students.
  3. Teachers often have a large range of maxims which they use. During lessons, they will choose the ones that help them to produce a successful lesson.
  4. What maxims teachers develop is based on their own understanding of what is the “best” or the “right” way to teach.
  5. Maxims are very much a part of how teachers implement their responsibilities and plans for a lesson. Maxims guide a teacher’s actions during a lesson.
  6. Maxims may continually evolve and should be periodically assessed by teachers as part of ongoing professional development.
