The Hidden Curriculum Article
In schools, there are numerous factors that impact instruction. From poor nutrition to teacher expectations, the factors pour in. While all these factors influence instruction, the students must still learn and the educator still needs to teach students the state standards. During the last few decades the way we educate children has evolved, so the definition of curriculum has evolved as well. In the early 1900's "specialists in the field began to differentiate among various kinds of curricula: planned and unplanned (the hidden curriculum) and technical and practical learnings" (Wiles, 2002, p. 23). This hidden curriculum is what many educators are now focusing upon. Once educators understand how to teach curriculum, then they need to learn about the unplanned curriculum that can keep their students from learning in school.
Hidden Curriculum is not the information that is in a textbook, but the information students learn through the world. Seaton explains that, "We know that many of the most potent messages students receive are not communicated through the explicit curriculum and it's content. Rather, the messages are part of the hidden curriculum"(2002, p.1). Students learn from watching television, surfing the Internet, listening to adults, and from the actions of society. We do not always give messages intentionally, but we express them through our emotions, attitudes, and actions. This information sometimes hampers students from learning the curriculum that their educators are trying to teach to them. That is why it is imperative that educators learn about hidden curriculum and how they can try to combat any of the factors they can.
Teacher attitude plays an integral part on how well students learn. If a teacher is excited when teaching a concept, then the students will sense it and become excited about the concept as well. Gourneau describes her study of educators' attitudes, where there were five attitudes that the best educators shared. These five attitudes were, " a genuine caring and kindness of the teacher, a willingness to share the responsibility involved in a classroom, a sincere sensitivity to the students' diversity, a motivation to provide meaningful learning experiences for all students, and an enthusiasm for stimulating the students' creativity"(2005, p. 3). Unfortunately, not all teachers possess all of these attitudes; therefore, the students are exposed to other attitudes that may be negative. Linear Measurements: Instruments used. Linear Measurement by Tape, Ranging out Survey Lines and overcoming Obstructions; Measurements on sloping ground; Tape corrections, conventional symbols. Angular Measurements: Instruments used; Introduction to Compass Surveying, Bearings and Longitude & Latitude of a Line, Introduction to total station.

- 1. Teacher Immorality Presentation Presented by Becky Faiello, Stephen Green, Meg Young, and Erica Zenon
- 2. Teaching & Privacy • Do teachers have the same rights to privacy as other people? • Can teachers expect to keep what they do in their personal life private? • Can school districts infringe on a teacher’s right to privacy?
- 3. Role Model • Because of the unique role teacher have in shaping the mind of children, teachers are to serve a good examples for their students (Fulmer, 2002). • Therefore, it expected that a teacher’s character and behavior will be above that of the average citizen (Fulmer, 2002). • This higher standard keeps teachers from enjoying the same privacy rights of nonpublic employees.
- 4. Private v. Personal • Some novice teachers think that so long as they do their job well and abide by all laws, what they do in their private life is of no concern to their employee. • Unfortunately, because of their position in the community as a role model for other people’s children, their actions outside the school are very much so of public concern.
- 5. Private v. Personal • Parents want to know that the person they entrust their child to is able to make good decision both inside the classroom and outside the classroom.
- 6. School Districts & Teacher Privacy • The courts try to balance the teacher’s right to privacy with the school districts interests in protecting the school community (Fulmer, 2002). • Most, but not all, states require that the district show a connection, a nexus, between the teacher’s conduct and the teacher’s ability to do his or her job. • Such a showing is generally not difficult to make (Fulmer, 2002).
- 7. Examples In which teachers lost their jobs for immorality issues- • One teacher was photographed with alcohol on vacation • A teacher sent pictures to his girlfriend, who was not one of his students (Turley, 2012).
- 8. Examples In which teachers lost their jobs for immorality issues- • A teacher was fired for a Facebook comment about gays, and • A teacher was photographed at a bridal shower with a stripper (Turley, 2012).
- 9. Reasoning As a school district official said, even though these incidents occurred outside of school hours, once the teacher is seen by parents, it becomes the school district’s problem. Teachers live the life of celebrities without the fame or the benefits and must always behave as though they are always being watched (Turley, 2012).
- 10. In Closing, While school districts cannot fire teachers because they engage in constitutionally protected free speech, not everything they say or write is free speech. A teacher’s personal choice can jeopardize their job if they are found to interfere with their ability to do their job. Immorality determinations often lead to teacher discipline or even terminations (Underwood, 2011).
