WHAT KIND OF MEDIA
INSTITUTION MIGHT
DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT AND WHY?
TASK 3 – NATALIE ROCKALL
MEDIA EVALUATION
DISTRIBUTIONDistribution is the business of launching and
sustaining films in the market place.
The distributor markets the film and develop an appropriate advertising campaign, to
market successfully, the distributor has to target the appropriate audience.
A Media DISTRIBUTOR
It’s then the distributors role to, identify an
audience, consider why their target audience
would want to see it, estimate the revenue
potential across all the formats of its release,
persuade cinema operators to have showings on
the film, and to develop plans to build awareness
and interest in the film.
Examples of Distribution
Companies
-20th Century Fox
-Entertainment One
-Lionsgate
-Paramount Pictures
-Universal Pictures
-Sony Pictures Releasing
-Warner Bros.
Compare your film to the type of
films the distribution companies
have released before
Se7en was distributed by New Line
Cinemas. This distribution company now
distributes joined with other companies such
as Warner Bros. They are a large
distribution company that distribute films
with large budgets. Another thriller in which
they distributed was The Butterfly Effect.
They have distributed many films and lots of
thriller cross genres.
Low Budget Film
Our film is a low budget film and New Line
Cinema seems to aim for higher budgeted
films. Therefore, it would probably be
unlikely that they would distribute ours.
However, there are smaller distribution
companies such as Metrodome that may be
interested in lower budgeted films. This
distribution company say that cinema can be
so much more than big studio blockbusters
and distributed a low budget film called
Shifty.
What audience is your film going
to appeal to?
Our film is low budget with all British actors,
none of which are famous. However, a
thriller genre does appeal to a wide
audience. After basing some of our
research on the film Gone Girl which has an
18 rating, the main 2
Target audience would be ages 25-34
with 39% of viewers being this age and
ages 15-24 at 27%.
Also, as our thriller is based on a girl going
missing, it would perhaps appeal more
towards female viewers.
Marketing strategies, release
strategies and exhibition options
Ways the film can be exhibited:
-Movie theater
-Television
-Personal Home Viewing (VHS, video-on-
demand, download, broadcast)
Self Distribution
This is when you choose to distribute your film, through the use of
social media. This could be to create an awareness to your film, and is
beneficial especially for our film, as our target audience are likely to
frequently use these social media platforms in their day to day life.
