The document discusses film distribution and the factors a distributor considers when deciding how to distribute a film. It describes the film being summarized as a low-budget British mystery thriller targeting audiences aged 15-40 interested in the genre. As the film has a niche crime/thriller audience without major stars, it would be distributed by a small British company like Vertigo Films or Film 4 rather than a large Hollywood studio. These small independent distributors focus on low-budget, niche films without major star power.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

ELEANOR FLOWER
2. WHAT IS FILM DISTRIBUTION?
A film distributor is an organisation who tries to market and sell a film to
make it available for an audience. They do this in many ways such as:
presenting the film at film festivals and markets.
There are many types of distribution companies, these include: Regular
distribution companies, Online Distribution Companies and Self distribution
Companies. Some of the most popular British distribution companies are:
• 20th century fox
• Arrow films
• Entertainment One UK
• Paramount Pictures UK
• Pinewood pictures
• Studio Canal
• Sony Pictures
• Vertigo films
• Warner bros
3. FACTORS: WHAT TYPE OF FILM DID WE MAKE?
The genre of film that we decided to make an opening sequence for was mystery thriller. We got most of
our inspiration from the film ‘Seven’ and based our opening sequence style on the opening sequences of
‘Seven’ and ‘Dexter’. Our target audience for our opening sequence is both males and females between
the ages of 15-40 interested in the mystery thriller genre.
However our film isn’t a Hollywood production, but a low budget British film.
4. FACTORS: WHAT TYPE OF AUDIENCE ARE WE TRYING
TO ATTRACT?
As our film is a crime-thriller, we have a very niche audience. This makes them
very stereotypical and specific. however as it is hybrid film, there will be a target
audience for Crime films and Thriller films, therefore or target audience is a
combination of the two.
For example:
• Billy:
• Billy is 20 years old and is studying forensic science at university and aspires to
become a forensic scientist. Billy is a very intelligent student and exceeded
well in school with top grades in A level sciences and medical science. Billy
enjoys watching TV shows or films during his spare time, his favourite shows
include: Dexter, Hannibal and Breaking Bad. His favourite films include: Saw
and Insidious. Billy is also a fan of horror games such as Outlast, the Evil
Within and Dead Space. Billy’s keen interest into horror and gore makes him a
suitable target market for that element of our film
5. OTHER FACTORS THAT DISTRIBUTORS HAVE TO
CONSIDER:
• COMPETITION. Competition is always a primary consideration. Which films are other distributors likely
to release at the same time or during the following weeks? - As our film has a very niche audience, it
will be unlikely that similar films will be released at a similar time to our own.
• EVENT. Is it an Event film, a prospective mass market blockbuster or specialized film for more discrete
audiences? - Again, as our film is a niche genre and will attract a niche audience, which makes it a low
budget British film, like ‘Monster's’.
• Is there any STAR POWER among the cast? What were the leads stars last roles and how successful
were they? Is the film made by a ‘name’ director? – As our film was made with a low budget, we
couldn’t afford any ‘star power’ actors which means it will need more advertising in order to attract a
wide audience.
6. WHO WOULD DISTRIBUTE OUR FILM?
To conclude, the type of company that would distribute our film would be a small distribution company
such as Vertigo Films or Film 4. this is because our film is a low budget British film with a niche audience.
For our film we created a distribution company called ‘B.E. Productions’ which is like vertigo films or film 4
and distributes low budget independent films.
