Task Three
What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
What is distribution?
 Distribution is the way in which something is shared out
among a group or spread over an area. In this case, we
are talking in terms of the various distribution
companies there are that specify in distributing certain
genres of film. The type of film we have created and the
type of Production Company you are will help you
determine how our film would be distributed and by
whom.

Film companies that distribute
horror films
 I found that ‘Lionsgate Films’ are a film company
who create, produce, and distribute many films,
including horror films. This film company may be
interested in distributing our film as it falls into the
horror category that they use. It is also slightly
different to the horror films they have already
distributed. For example…
Is your film going to appeal to UK audiences only? Or does it have a
wider
appeal? Why? Why not?
 Our film is going to appeal internationally – mainly the
USA and UK. The USA is a prime location for the film to
be distributed as many distribution companies are
located there. Many existing horror films are based in
America, so I predict our film would be popular there.
Although our film is British, I believe that we would
include actors from other countries in our film if we
were to continue creating the film.
Marketing strategies, release strategies and
exhibition options
 Marketing strategies - We would need to think about how our film is
going to be presented to the audience so that they know what they
are buying. We need to think who we are selling our film to and is it
worth the money for them? Or how do we portray it to be worth it? We
would need to know about our competition as well because we have
only created a British low budget film so we would need to think of a
good idea to beat our competition. However, despite this, we would
need to make our advertising as presentable as possible to attract the
audience.
 Release strategies and exhibition options - researching our target
audience so the film becomes very popular to them, also to know
where our audience engages in media so we know were to promote
our film. For example, social media platforms such as Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram, or a Television advertisement. Generally the target
audience of late teens, early twenties would frequently use social
media sites so we could promote our film here.
Self - Distribution
 Self distribution is where you advertise the film yourself.
You can hire a publicist and other people to help with
your advertising, but you pay for these with the money
you would’ve used to pay the distributer, resulting in
saving a lot of money.
