What kind of media institution
might distribute your
media product and why?
What is distribution?
 Film distribution is the growth of making a film available for audience viewing.
Usually this would be the task of the film distributer whom picks the marketing
strategy for the film itself, the media which exhibits the film and makes it available
for viewing as well as the person who sets the release date on top of many other
matters. Films may be exhibited directly to the public through the movie theatre,
television, personal home viewing (like VHS, video on demand, cable TV/freeview
TV etc.) when a film is produced it is typically shown to audiences in a movie
theatre especially if it is a feature film but if it was an independent film they are
usually shown through TV services.
Examples of distribution companies
The key people within film distributers are the big companies whom control
most of the industry, examples of distribution companies are:
 United International Pictures
 Warner Brothers
 Buena vista
 Twentieth Century Fox
 Sony
Would they be interested in our film?
 From making, editing and watching our film I believe that a company like 20th
century fox would like to be ion charge of the distribution of our film. This is
because from my past research 20th Century Fox has distributed films such as
Gone Girl, Mirrors and Morgan all thrillers which are relatively close to what our
film is. Due to our film being packed with suspension, filled with fear it attracts this
distributer but also any others.
Is your film going to appeal to UK audiences only?
Or does it have a wider appeal?
 In my opinion I believe our film would only be appealing to UK audiences due to
the fact that that the film makers are an independent company. One main reason
why we would keep it UK only is because it costs a lot of money to send our film
abroad making it into a blockbuster and if it wasn't to be successful we would be
in debt so instead we would keep our film inbound and show in UK cinemas only
or even just on the tv. I also believe that because the culture of our film is strongly
British only our culture would really understand it and therefore only a British
audience would relate to the film and it’s characters.
Marketing strategies
 Different marketing strategies we could use are:
Traditional methods New methods
Trailers (Cinema,TV,DVD, Youtube)
Premiers
TV Interview
Print campaigns (Posters, Billboards, Magazine/Newspaper
adverts)
Music videos
Websites
Email promotion
Social media page
Blog reviews
Product endorsement
Viral marketing campaign (Twitter trends, Facebook pages)
Release strategies
Within most film markets, films are usually released through something called the
window system. In this system, films are given a cinema release first and after agree
when they can make it available for DVD/Blu-Ray.
This is something we would follow when releasing our film.
Exhibition strategies
To have a good exhibition for our film we would use digital exhibition, this is stuff like
using a projected instead of film to exhibit our film. Advantages of this are:
 A digital projector doesn't need a trained person to uses it
 With a film reel it keeps running once started and cannot be stopped so if
something went wrong the whole movie would have to be played again
 Cinemas all use projectors to show their films nowadays so its cheaper and easier.
 Staff could be cut to minimum.
Exhibition strategies
 One we have premiered our film within the cinema we would then decide with
companies due dates for when our film will stop becoming viewed and we can
start having DVDs/Blu-Ray discs released.
Self-Distribution strategies
 Now we had edited the film ourselves, spending hours and hours crafting it, we
can pour more time into distributing it. One way can be self distribution. Today
there are a variety of websites within the internet which allows us to submit our
product at a small fee. These websites would help us sell our movie via video on
demand and some even lets us keep the earnings to ourselves. We would do this
if we couldn't afford the other strategies of course.
