What is Film Distribution
1.
2. WHAT IS DISTRIBUTION?
Distribution is the business of launching and sustaining films in
the market place.
It is a distributor's role to:
-identify an audience
-consider why they'd go and see it
-estimate the revenue potential across all the formats of its release
-persuade cinema operators to play the film
-develop plans to build awareness and interest in the film
-aim to convert as much interest as possible into cinema visits
3. EXAMPLES OF DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES
20th Century Fox Film Co. Ltd.
Momentum Pictures
Park Circus Ltd.
Universal Pictures
The Walt Disney Company Ltd.
Icon Film Distribution
4. COMPARE YOUR FILM TO TO THE TYPE OF FILMS THE
DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES HAVE RELEASED BEFORE
As our film which we based our research on was Gone Girl,
we chose to use the same distribution company which was
20th Century Fox Film Co. Ltd. The films that this company
have distributed are all different genres such as Ice Age, Star
Wars: The Initial Trilogy and Taken. The film Taken is a thriller
which means they have distributed the genre before and so
may be interested in distributing
our film. Also, they don’t
have a particular genre
they’re mainly interested in.
Having this company as the
distributer would help it
appeal to a wider audience.
5. WHAT AUDIENCE IS YOUR FILM GOING TO
APPEAL TO?
After basing our research on the film Gone Girl which has an 18 rating, the
main 2 target audiences would be ages 25-34 with 39% of viewers being
this age and ages 15-24 with 27% of viewers being this age. This would
be the ages we would try to appeal to as usually this age group are
working and earning money which enables them to be going out
occasionally.
Also, the fact it’s a thriller involving a family with a murdered son would
appeal more so to females as we feel males are stereotypically more
into action films whereas our film is more emotive.
Our film would mainly be intended for a UK audience as it was produced by
British people at a low budget and so would be hard to appeal to a
wider audience, however our idea was based on Gone Girl which is an
American film which means the idea could attract a wider audience.
6. MARKETING STRATEGIES, RELEASE
STRATEGIES AND EXHIBITION OPTIONS
It is important to build up to the opening of a film so people are excited for the
launch and in order to do this advertising through TV, Radio and Social
media is very important.
Social Media would be very useful as most people in society today use it
everyday on a regular basis, whether its on Instagram, Facebook or
YouTube. Pop up adverts on any social media would be seen by the users
and help raise immediate awareness of the film.
Also, adverts on TV on channels which show thriller or drama TV series would
be useful as it would be something they were interested in. Appearing on TV
shows such as Breakfast shows in the morning to promote your film is also
good as you don’t have to pay to go on them and at the same time, the
viewers are likely to be the right target audience.
As our target audience is mainly 25-34 year olds, a lot of this age group would
be driving and so advertising the film on the radio would mean our target
audience would hear about it.
7. SELF DISTRIBUTION
Where you cut the films distributor and advertise the film yourself.
You can hire publicists etc. but you pay for these yourself with the
money you aren’t using to pay for a distributer, so you end up
saving a lot of money.
It can be harder to get as much awareness of your film and
sometimes self distribution doesn’t always work.
