What kind of media institution might distribute
your media product and why?
Evaluation Task 3
What is distribution?
Distribution is the sharing of something (film in this case) out among a number of
recipients. There are companies which do this in film making, they will represent a
film at festivals and distribute the film around the world.
Examples of distribution companies
UK:
Dartmouth Films
Lionsgate
Paramount Pictures UK
Sony Pictures Releasing
Universal Pictures UK
UTV Motion Pictures
Warner Bros. Distributors
Comparing Distribution companies
The filmy shifty is a British independent film like our film is so it is on a low budget
like ours. The distribution company which distributed the film was called metrodome
group. This company might be interested in our film because our film is a similar low
budget British thriller like Shifty. Our film is similar in some respects and different in
others, it has a similar urban feel so it will attract a similar audience like Shifty did so
you could market the film in a similar way.
Does our film appeal to UK audiences only?
I feel our film would mainly appeal to Uk audiences because the film is based
on urban lifestyle in an english city. It shows the dark side of British gangs and
what they can be like. Wider audiences might be interested in the film but it is
based upon the english city culture so some people from other cultures might
not understand what the film is fully about. The target audience is therefore
British teenagers because they will understand the urban lifestyle which there
is in London and how easy it is the get involved with gangs.
Marketing Strategies
One way we would market our film would be to release different trailers which will
each individually appeal to different audiences, we could do this through the
distribution company we choose. Fly-posters could be another low budget way of
getting the film out there, when distributing the flyers we would need to make sure it
is the right location so we would reach the target audience. One other way of cheaper
advertisement would be putting radio trailers on certain radio stations so the right
audience hear the advert. One way of doing this could be running them of pirate radio
stations. Other ways we could get the film out would be through social media because
most of the target audience seem to spend lots of time on it so creating pages and
hashtags for the film would give the film publicity.
Release Strategies and Exhibition Options
Planning our release would involve our film to be near completion so we can show
different distributors the film, we could do this either by a screening, via email or
showing the film at a film festival. We would eventually pick one of those ways and
decide depending on how the film looks, it also would depend on if we have a
distribution company interested in our film.
Self Distribution
Self distribution is the publishing of your own film, there are some positives and
negatives of this method of distribution:
Advantages:
- Retain control and rights of you film so gives you choices
- You do not have to cut any of the money made from the film
Disadvantages:
- It can be very time consuming
- It will limited options for sales as distributors have established relationships with
buyers
