Lessons learned: A step-wise implementation for Application RationalizationLeanIX GmbH
During EA Connect Days 2018 in Bonn, Maik Schulz, Director Application Management at NORMA Group, touched on the lessons learned during the introduction of and EA tool and their application rationalization project.
In this talk LeanIX CEO André Christ answers the questions:
- Why should you care about your company's future Enterprise Architecture (EA)?
- What are the factors of a successful EA tool implementation?
- How does EA and LeanIX work well together with tools like Apptio, ServiceNow or Confluence?
How to reduce complexity by segregating your data with Virtual WorkspacesLeanIX GmbH
LeanIX Virtual Workspaces make it possible for enterprises to operate across a shared IT inventory while setting specific access rights to protect confidential data or reducing the complexity of a workspace for certain business units. LeanIX admins now have the ability to decide which users can access Fact Sheets and to segment their workspaces according to e.g. enterprise brands or business units—all while e.g. keeping a common Business Capability model intact. The new feature is based on a flexible concept using Access Control Entities (ACEs) and Access Control Lists, and a group-view is available built-in to allow for centralized analyses.
The document discusses architecting a digital transformation for an ICT department. The department has an aging legacy ERP system and many small external applications with no internal knowledge of enterprise systems. The CIO's task is to reduce time-to-market for digital business solutions. The proposed action is to transform the application architecture by decomposing the ERP and executing the transformation as both a technological refactoring and way to bring business innovations including digital capabilities. The transformation will follow several paths like process innovation, ERP decomposition, using off-the-shelf products, project opportunities, and operational improvements.
At EA Connect Days 2018 in Bonn, LeanIX CEO André Christ talked about his vision for the future of Enterprise Architecture new features and the roadmap for LeanIX.

Application Harmonisation using Design Principles in LeanIXLeanIX GmbH
Rainer Bartsch, Senior Enterprise Architect at RWE/Innogy give insights into Application Harmonization at EA Connect Days 2018 in Bonn: The Energy Trading business has been changing from high to low margins, from long running contracts to highly volatile (intraday) markets, from a few big players to many smaller market participants and to a business model that requires us to approach new markets and opportunities around the globe.
Such constant business change, over time, results in a quite diverse IT landscape using all kinds of technologies and a hell of a lot of people to keep it running. This obviously is adverse business change but what can I do to harmonise my IT environment or prevent to get into such a situation? For sure, it doesn’t happen by accident or just by having a bunch of good developers, a set of architecture guidelines and tools!
Bartsch demonstrated RWE's approach to application harmonisation based on a business & IT commitment to deliver IT solutions against a set of 10 Design Principles. This includes LeanIX as our application inventory and two different examples on how to cover Design Principles, first as Custom Tags and second as Custom Fact Sheets.

"An introduction to Kx Technology - a Big Data solution", Kyra Coyne, Data Sc...Dataconomy Media
Kx Technology is an in-memory columnar database and programming system that is highly optimized for real-time streaming and historical time-series data analytics. It provides extreme performance at low latency and can scale to process massive data volumes without significant infrastructure. Kx has been widely adopted over two decades in the financial services industry for applications like market surveillance, risk management, and quantitative research.
Assessing New Databases– Translytical Use CasesDATAVERSITY
Organizations run their day-in-and-day-out businesses with transactional applications and databases. On the other hand, organizations glean insights and make critical decisions using analytical databases and business intelligence tools.
The transactional workloads are relegated to database engines designed and tuned for transactional high throughput. Meanwhile, the big data generated by all the transactions require analytics platforms to load, store, and analyze volumes of data at high speed, providing timely insights to businesses.
Thus, in conventional information architectures, this requires two different database architectures and platforms: online transactional processing (OLTP) platforms to handle transactional workloads and online analytical processing (OLAP) engines to perform analytics and reporting.
Today, a particular focus and interest of operational analytics includes streaming data ingest and analysis in real time. Some refer to operational analytics as hybrid transaction/analytical processing (HTAP), translytical, or hybrid operational analytic processing (HOAP). We’ll address if this model is a way to create efficiencies in our environments.
- Oracle Database 11g introduced new features to simplify database administration and automate tasks. It provided up to 44% less administration time and 47% fewer steps compared to prior versions.
- British Telecommunications consolidated thousands of databases onto an Oracle Database 11g private cloud, reducing management costs by 20% and improving business agility. The consolidation standardizes deployment and reduced application deployment time from weeks to minutes.
- Dena Bank deployed Oracle databases and storage to improve ATM and core banking application performance. This enhanced customer service by increasing ATM transaction speeds by 80% and reducing declined transactions from 10% to less than 1%.

Kai Wähner – Real World Use Cases for Realtime In-Memory Computing
NoSQL is not just about different storage alternatives such as document store, key value store, graphs or column-based databases. The hardware is also getting much more important. Besides common disks and SSDs, enterprises begin to use in-memory storages more and more because a distributed in-memory data grid provides very fast data access and update. While its performance will vary depending on multiple factors, it is not uncommon to be 100 times faster than corresponding database implementations. For this reason and others described in this session, in-memory computing is a great solution for lifting the burden of big data, reducing reliance on costly transactional systems, and building highly scalable, fault-tolerant applications. The session begins with a short introduction to in-memory computing. Afterwards, different frameworks and product alternatives are discussed for implementing in-memory solutions. Finally, the main part of this session shows several different real world uses cases where in-memory computing delivers business value by supercharging the infrastructure.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
In his public lecture, Christian Timmerer provides insights into the fascinating history of video streaming, starting from its humble beginnings before YouTube to the groundbreaking technologies that now dominate platforms like Netflix and ORF ON. Timmerer also presents provocative contributions of his own that have significantly influenced the industry. He concludes by looking at future challenges and invites the audience to join in a discussion.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Why You Should Replace Windows 11 with Nitrux Linux 3.5.0 for enhanced perfor...SOFTTECHHUB
The choice of an operating system plays a pivotal role in shaping our computing experience. However, as technological advancements continue to push the boundaries of innovation, alternative operating systems have emerged, challenging the status quo and offering users a fresh perspective on computing.
One such alternative that has garnered significant attention and acclaim is Nitrux Linux 3.5.0, a sleek, powerful, and user-friendly Linux distribution that promises to redefine the way we interact with our devices. With its focus on performance, security, and customization, Nitrux Linux presents a compelling case for those seeking to break free from the constraints of proprietary software and embrace the freedom and flexibility of open-source computing.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
