OER Professional Development Passports
In order to maintain a legacy of innovation, Mountain Heights Academy developed a professional development program for teachers called The OER Passport. The OER Passport course trains teachers and students on OER use, reuse, licensing, creation, and sharing by completing the following tasks. The first three tasks lay a solid foundation and provide teachers with the tools to complete the last three tasks which focus on the use, reuse, production, and innovative teaching practices.
Make Up Classes
Make-up classes arranged outside of regular class times create problems for both students and management. For students, particularly girls, it can be difficult to attend late classes which increases absenteeism and conflicts with other commitments like jobs. It also leads to large class sizes where teachers cannot give full attention. For management, extra classes require more expenses and staffing arrangements which disrupt schedules. However, there are solutions like limiting teachers to only 3 make-up classes and not paying them for additional classes, as well as keeping strict records of teacher classes to inform administrators. Rocky View Schools is a school division located west, north and east of Calgary, Alberta. It has 42 schools and over 18,000 students, making it the 5th largest in the province. In 2008, Rocky View Schools launched a new vision and 3-year plan to engage 21st century learners. This involved adopting new foundation statements and goals. The plan included moving to more interactive online learning environments like Moodle. Teachers received professional development on Moodle, starting with introductory courses. While some teachers adapted well, others remained uncomfortable with the change. Over time, with school-based support and peer learning, more teachers have begun using Moodle in the learning zone.

Flipping the classroom is a fast-growing trend in education. At Useagility, we believe that the best digital product strategy starts with uncovering unmet user needs and gathering insights that drive innovation.
We recently conducted an independent study to better understand how educators are using technology to flip their classrooms and to explore gaps and unmet needs. Research shows clear opportunities for eLearning companies seeking to improve their platforms and grow business through improved support of flipped learning.
1. Most are not using a single platform, which makes it harder. Teachers are darn resourceful. On average instructors are using at least three separate (often free) tools to create flipped lesson assignments and to deliver them for students to use. It’s not seamless and not integrated with other systems.
2. Lack of feedback loop to inform instructors. One of the biggest gaps for instructors is not knowing which students actually watched the lessons. Instructors want more insight into what students do or don’t understand before they come to class.
3. Student-side experience can be difficult. In most cases, there isn’t a centralized place for students to find lessons and homework for different classes. This creates a burden for parents and lowers student completion. In addition, video lessons are usually accompanied by a note worksheet or sample problems. Student need multiple technologies - which are not currently integrated - to complete the work.

- 6. INSTRUCTOR CONCERNS • Intellectual thievery • My syllabus is my intellectual property • I have had other schools “take” my course without permission • Course “shopping” • “Shopping” for courses? Are they for sale? • Students who pre-read syllabi are trying to find the “easier” class to take. • Extra chore • It is really annoying to get those messages asking, asking, asking for a syllabus in advance
