Types of Courses Sandbox Course Development Course Semester Course • Private space to experiment in • No students enrolled • Available now • Begin work on future semester courses • Available upon request • Must course copy content to semester course • Blank course shell • Live course with students • Available: • Instructor 60 days before first class • Students 2 weeks prior to first class
- 5. Locating Courses My Courses Module Course List The My Courses module and the Courses List tab contain a list of the courses you are enrolled in.
- 6. Homepage/ Module Page • Available from course menu • Display dynamic information • Use to: – Quickly navigate to course areas – Customize and personalize the student experience
- 7. When Edit Mode is On • Instructors only • Add content • Edit course menu
- 8. When Edit Mode is Off • Instructors can navigate • Cannot change course content • Similar to what students see
- 9. Enter Student Preview Mode • Click "eye" symbol to enter Student Preview Mode • See your course exactly how a student would see it
- 10. Exit Student Preview Mode • Click on Exit Preview • Select the first option to maintain your courses content • Click continue.

Control Panel • Files- A central file storage area within each course • Course Tools- All available tools that can be added to a Course • Evaluation- Run course reports • Grade Center- Manage students' grades, create columns, and calculate final grades • Users and Groups- Set up Groups and view a list of users in the course • Customization- View and change the properties for the course • Packages and Utilities- Copy, import, export, and archive the course • Help- Access Blackboard Help, as well as the OIT helpdesk information

- Enhance learning with interactive and engaging features Course materials are available 24/7 allowing students to learn anywhere at anytime Post syllabi and other course documents, create announcements and task to keep your students up-to-date, build online assessments, share multi-media information, and much more
- Notice that you have a sandbox course already created for you. Locate your sandbox course and click to open it
- Courses default Home Page available from course menu You see that the Home Page (or module page) contains modules that display dynamic information such as grades, alerts, and announcements Use the modules to Quickly navigate to course areas Customize and personalize the student experience Can Add, delete, and rearrange modules
- Make sure that instructor level functions appear Available functions include: Build Content Appearance of Contextual Menus
- The box seen below will appear. (We recommend selecting the first option, to maintain your courses content despite if you have made any accidental alterations.)
- Go over each link Content and Information look the same Tools- quick tool guide for students Help- blackboard help for students
- Add content by clicking on the + in the top left hand corner. You can add thinks like new content areas (content and information are examples of this). You can also add tool links (discussion boards,) or web links (links to an outside website) Use the drop down arrow to: Rename a link Delete items Go ahead and have them rename Information to Info and click the green check box
- Provides tools to create, manage, and enhance your courses Next we’re going to look at some of the course management menu options. Don’t forget to test some of these features in your sandbox course.
- Part of the course management menu is the control pane. This is what is used to make the content engaging or enhance the course appearance.
- This will make your course more aesthetically appealing. Go ahead and look at some of the teaching style options that are available to you. Note that you can see a sample course menu and examples of how each one can be used. If you choose to add one of these to your course, it will change the look and there is no way to go back to a blank course shell without deleting everything from the course menu.
