Color theory begins with the color wheel and describes the three primary colors of red, yellow and blue. Secondary colors are made by mixing two primary colors, and tertiary colors are made by mixing a primary and secondary color. There are three essential color schemes - complementary colors sit opposite each other on the color wheel, analogous colors sit next to each other, and monochromatic uses tints and shades of a single color. Shades are made by adding black to a color, and tints are made by adding white.
