• Bauxite does not have a specific composition. It is a
mixture of hydrous aluminium oxides, aluminium
hydroxides, clay minerals and insoluble materials.
• Bauxite is a rock not a mineral.
• Caribbean countries are among the top 12 major
producers of bauxite in the world. Jamaica 6th,
Suriname 9th and Guyana 12th.
• The Open Pit mining method is used to get bauxite.
The water in bauxite is taken out of the ore. This
leaves a white powder that is called alumina which is
another name for aluminium oxide.

The first stage involves the mining of the bauxite ore.
Deposits of bauxite ore mined.
The second stage is the processing of the bauxite ore is
refined into alumina /aluminum oxide.
The third stage is the conversion of the alumina into
aluminum. Aluminum does not occur in nature as a metal.
The fourth stage is the making of consumer products and is
not a part of the industry.
