• Bauxite does not have a specific composition. It is a
mixture of hydrous aluminium oxides, aluminium
hydroxides, clay minerals and insoluble materials.
• Bauxite is a rock not a mineral.
• Caribbean countries are among the top 12 major
producers of bauxite in the world. Jamaica 6th,
Suriname 9th and Guyana 12th.
• The Open Pit mining method is used to get bauxite.
The water in bauxite is taken out of the ore. This
leaves a white powder that is called alumina which is
another name for aluminium oxide.

Explain that these are all minerals and rocks. Let students identify which is a rock and which is mineral. Explain further that minerals are solid, inorganic substances, that form naturally. They have a definite chemical formula and general structure and vary in color, hardness, density, transparency, composition, location, and quantity. Bauxite does not have a specific composition. It is a mixture of hydrous aluminium oxides, aluminium hydroxides, clay minerals and insoluble materials and so it is classified as a rock because the minerals in it can vary depending on where it is found.
Key Concept: Minerals. Rocks, bauxite.
Remind students that:
Minerals are solid, inorganic substances, that form naturally. They have a definite chemical formula and general structure and vary in color, hardness, density, transparency, composition, location, and quantity.
Minerals are found all over the earth but differ in quantity and quality according to the location. The most common ones are found in rock on land, in cave or underground.
are mined for their value and every country in the world hopes to find these precious metal in its soil.
Minerals are non-renewable resources
Discuss the location and quantity of minerals in the Caribbean. The Caribbean's bauxite and aluminum industries are dominated by North American firms. Point out that petroleum and natural gas are not classified as minerals. Neither is bauxite.
Inform class that most of the minerals are exported to the US, Canada and the UK for processing. Ask students to give reasons why this is done. Lead discussion to show that the cost of production and the technical know how prohibits Caribbean countries from processing the minerals Help them to understand that mineral exploration is done by multinational companies headquartered overseas.
Explain that minerals are non-renewable resources. Let students say how non-renewable resources are to be used,
Explain that these minerals need to be conserved and sustained
Minerals and rocks are used in every aspect of our daily lives
Minerals and rocks are used in every aspect of our daily lives
Jamaica has not yet found mineral such in quantity large enough to make mining it profitable. I has large reserve of commercially viable rocks, among which are limestone, gypsum, silica, and marble. These are mined, used locally and exported.
i. Bauxite mining began in Suriname in 1916 and aluminum the principal ore from it gradually became Suriname's main export.
ii. Although bauxite was first identified in Guyana in the period 1897-1910. Production did not begin until 1917.
iii. Jamaica began its operation in 1952. Reynolds Metals Ltd was the first company to commercially produced bauxite in the island. By 1958 Jamaica became the world's largest producer of bauxite in the world.
Bauxite is found throughout Jamaica. However it is mined exclusively in St Ann, Clarendon, St Elizabeth and Manchester. There is a large deposit of the ore in Trelawny’s Cockpit country every effort is being made by NEPA and other environmental watchdog agencies to ensure that mining does not take place in the Cockpit country.
Display sample of the bauxite ore collected either from the bauxite plant or the Bauxite Institute. Ask students to observe its colour and scent.
Discuss each of the four stages of the bauxite industry. Explain that in the case of Jamaica the first two stages are carried out locally. Let students give reasons the final two stages are not carried out locally. Discuss the cost of production.
