Formal Speech of Animal Farm By: George Orwell
Old Major, a prize winning boar, gathers the animals of the Manor Farm for a meeting in the big
barn. He tells them of a dream he has had in which all animals live together with no human beings
to oppress or control them. He tells the animals that they must work toward such a paradise and
teaches them a song called Beasts of England, in which his dream vision is lyrically described. The
animals greet Major s vision with great enthusiasm. When he dies only three nights after the
meeting, three younger pigs, Snowball, Napoleon, and Squealer formulate his main principles into
a philosophy called Animalism. Late one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Symbols: Animal Farm
Animal Farm, known at the beginning and the end of the novel as the Manor Farm, symbolizes
Russia and the Soviet Union under Communist Party rule. But more generally, Animal Farm stands
for any human society, be it capitalist, socialist, fascist, or communist. It possesses the internal
structure of a nation, with a government (the pigs), a police force or army (the dogs), a working
class (the other animals), and state holidays and rituals. Its location amid a number of hostile
neighboring farms supports its symbolism as a political entity with diplomatic concerns.
The Barn
The barn at Animal Farm, on whose outside walls the pigs paint the Seven Commandments and,
later, their revisions, represents the collective memory of a modern nation. The many scenes in
which the ruling class pigs alter the principles of Animalism and in which the working class
animals puzzle over but accept these changes represent the way an institution in power can revise
a community s concept of history to bolster its control. If the working class believes history to lie
on the side of their oppressors, they are less likely to question oppressive practices. Moreover, the
oppressors, by revising their nation s conception of its origins and development, gain control of the
nation s very identity, and the oppressed soon come to depend upon the authorities for their
communal sense of self.

Cruelty And Cruelty In The Country Of Iraq
I am writing to inform you of the cruelty going on in the country of Iraq. I have been traveling
the country as a photographer and I have managed to earn the trust of Iraqi soldiers who are
performing acts of torture on prisoners. According to the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq, Iraq
has one of the world s oldest cultural histories, boasts a rich heritage and has a long reflected
cultural diversity. Although Iraqis generally are a religious and conservative people, there are
strong secular tendencies in the country. (See Fig. 1)

Torture has always been apart of Iraq s along with many other countries cultures. Even though Iraq
has been a part of the Iraqi people s history, it still goes against the rights of men and women to be
imprisoned with no probable cause and then tortured until the government or another individual can
get information out of the prisoners whether it is true or not.
In Kenny Paul D. article The Meaning of torture , he states that torture is the action or practice
of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something.
There are many different types of torture from rape, to both physical and mental torture.
According to Mosul Torture Exposed, prisoners in Iraq were hung from the ceiling with their
arms tied behind their backs. The men and women who are imprisoned, are whipped, shocked,
raped, and the Iraqis who were performing the torture would add weights to the men s backs that
they hung from the ceiling. (See Fig. 2) The Iraqi soldiers also threatened the men s families by
saying that they would kill or rape the women if they did not confess to the crimes the men had
committed, whether the accusations were true or not. Fig. 2. Man who has been hung from the

Lady Liberty Research Paper
The Statue of Liberty, also known as Lady Liberty, for me is the most intriguing part of New
York City. It is a symbol of hope, freedom, and a better life in the United States. It is widely
known that Lady Liberty was the first thing immigrants saw when they came to America, this
architectural structure was a symbol of hope and freedom. What intrigues me the most is, Why
would France just give us a an expensive copper statue? I never understood this until right now,
everyone knows what she symbolizes, she is the Statue of Liberty. The word liberty is related to
the word liberated , which means to free. For example, U.S. soldiers helped liberate Jews from
the concentration camps in Germany after World War 2. The statue was given to us to represent
freedom, the concept on which our great country was born on. Not just any freedom, a true
freedom, a freedom in which we are not subservient to a king. In a sense, we are being liberated
from being servants to the kingdom. It is our country and we want to protect and defend it
because we are fighting for a cause, not just some person who wears a crown because of the family

To understand this you need to go back in history to the 1790 s when France was fighting there
Revolutionary War. They followed the ways of the United Statesby starting the French Revolution
in the kingdom of France. The bourgeois or middle class believed the citizens should have a part
in the politics of their country and should not be run by a few aristocrats. France wanted true
freedom like the U.S.A., they wanted to be liberated from there kings like us. The Statue of Liberty
represents that freedom. The U.S. was the first major country to become independent successfully
and re imagine politics, this led the French to do the same, which led to a long friendship with

Pop Culture And Popular Culture
Popular Culture s Influence: How Lucille Ball Inspired Me Everyone develops into a different
person, but there s no doubt that we take inspiration from others. Being exposed to horror movies
at a young age by one s parents can make a child fearful, or give them an appreciation for movies
and what makes them scary. Likewise, being introduced to comedy at a young age can mold a
child s taste in humor or appreciation for the genre. Popular culturehas helped influenced many of
us, and it has made us the people we are today; after all, haven t we all heard a child say they
want to grow up and be a superhero? These icons, such as superheroes or actors, have helped
inspire people both negatively and positively. One icon which has inspired me is Lucille Ball, her
influence has made me more optimistic because she overcame great difficulties in her life and
because the characters she played were very independent and outgoing.
I grew up watching Lucille Ball on her show I Love Lucy, and I was inspired to be optimistic
because of the manner in which she overcame challenges in her life. Because she was optimistic
when realizing her goals, the pop culture icon has influenced me greatly. Popular culture, according
to Psychology Today writer Jim Taylor, is, grounded in expressions of shared experiences that are...
fundamental to our society, including the values and beliefs that have shaped it. (Popular Culture:
We Are What We Consume). It can be said that popular culture revolves around

Apple s Iphone 5 Personal Evaluation
Apple s iPhone 5 Personal Evaluation Personal research and evaluations are excellent ways to
discover pertinent information about a product that a consumer wishes to purchase. In addition,
reviews come from multiple sources: experts or consumers, both play an important role to the
consumer and are thought to be valued resources. In fact, reviews and information are easier to
acquire due to the modern technology and increased use of the internet among consumers. Reviews
and research help consumers to decide whether or not they are going to purchase a specific
product, such as Apple s iPhone5s or the 5c, by providing information and specifications. When
comparing consumer reviews along with personal knowledge about the Apple iPhone 5 to expert
reviews based on design, software, and functionally, it is clear that personal evaluations are the
best, as they are first hand knowledge. This consumer has often considered purchasing Apple s
iPhone 5 based on its design, and my desired needs. According to consumers reviews, one
consumer had problems with the housing fading with time on black iPhone devices. On the other
hand, Gadi Amit, a founder of New Deal Design, states You hold the new iPhone, and you see and

Analysis Of George Weigel s Book Letters Of A Young...
Through thick and thin, Catholicism has been around for quite a long time. With millions of
followers from around the globe, it has grown to become one of the largest religious faiths.
Every single one of these Christians has their own unique story about how their faith has
significantly affected their lives. In his book, George Weigel shares his experience as a Catholic
growing up in late 1950 s and 1960 s in Baltimore. On page 9 of his book Letters to a Young
Catholic , he says The real Catholic difference ... was, at bottom, a way of seeing the world
(Weigel 9). This means that what separates a Catholic from the rest is our experience and
knowledge of God, through which we are given the power to experience the world differently
than most others can. I do feel this way as well. Being Catholic, I feel that I definitely experience
the world differently than others. Whenever I see or hear about a tragic event that has occurred,
I can hold solace in the idea that everything is all part of God s master plan and that it will all
work out in the end. If I am every struggling for anything, whether it an exorbitant amount of
homework I have for a weekend or an difficult test or quiz coming up that I haven t had time to
study for, I know that I can trust in God and that everything will be alright in the long run. Being
Catholic has also taught me to be thankful for the smaller things in life, because it is the smaller
things that can add up to make a bad day turn around. Like

Why Are Visual Aids Important In A Presentation
I.Theory 1.Why are visual aids crucial in a presentation? Visual aids are crucial in a presentation
because visual aids often generate a clearer impression and more memorable rather than just words
spoken. Presentation with images or videos can make your presentation more interesting and not
tedious. And human more easily understand something through visualizing rather than listening.
Studies in Harvard and Columbia said that doing a presentation with visual aids can increase 14%
39% college student s memory rather than doing a presentation without any visual aids. 2.How to

SUMMARY Several influential industry reports have pointed out that a decline in construction
quality and productivity could be attributed to the performance of subcontractors who are entrusted
to complete the actual works, yet subcontractor performance appraisal is a much neglected subject

Labor Vs. Capital During The Late 1800s
The ensuing conflict, between labor vs. capital, during the late 1800s initiated a struggle of power
in the workforce between the rich industrialists (or corporate leaders) and the middle class/lower
class workers. The Capitalists had intervened with the protests orchestrated by the workers, ensuring
that the power remains with them. The strategies of the industrialists and the unique ways of
protesting from the workers, contributes to spur a vigorous argument between the employers and
their employees. The workers tried their best to ameliorate their working conditions by forming
numerous unions, trying to fix currency (gold to paper) to economically help themselves, refusing
to go to work, resorting to violence and non violence, etc. However, the Corporate leaders kept an
upper hand and dissolved the workers ambitions by hiring scabs, creating a strong relationship with
the military (Pullman strike), controlling and fixing policies at work, hiring immigrants for cheap
labor, etc. Throughout the late 1800s, the corporate leaders have been able to successfully prevent
workers who had resorted to: forming unions, protests (ex. Pullman strike and Homestead strike),
violence (ex. Haymarket Sq. Riot), etc., from achieving a radical solution to the workers issues with
the management by using several different strategies including but not limited to: hiring scabs
/immigrants in the Homestead strike, using government support in the Pullman strike and keeping
the power on their side

additionally steals those precious years before death away from the families. This gruesome
disease also affects my family; alzheimer s runs on my grandmother s side and has lead to the

Rain In The Great Gatsby
In The Great Gatsby, the titular character is far from perfect. He might have obtained all the
success he dreamed about, but the means by which he acquired his vast fortune are anything but
formidable. However, Gatsby came across a saving grace in the form of water. Whenever Gatsby
came into contact with huge amounts of water, he got a much needed cleansing of all of his sins.
In chapter 5 of The Great Gatsby, Nick arranged for Gatsby and Daisy to meet at his house. On
the day of the meeting, it rained heavily. This rain is very significant. According to How to Read
Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster, Rain is never just rain. Rain has a rather
cleansing property, he says, and the rain cleansed Gatsby from his past actions. He made a good
deal of his money illicitly selling alcohol and running illegal gambling rings (and if Gatsby is to be
believed, he also ran a drug business). All of this has stained Gatsby. The rain, in a sense, cleanses

Mere hours before, he and his mistress ran over Myrtle, killing her. With this in mind, along with
the fact that Gatsby was helping Wolfsheim run his illegal businesses, it isn t unreasonable to
think that Gatsby s death was a case of him needing to be cleansed. Thomas. C. Foster says that It
has always seemed to me that the whole business [drowning/baptism] probably ties in with some
cultural memory of Noah s flood ... this small remnant being set down on dry land to restore life to
earth, cleansed of the sin and pollution... . While Gatsby s drowning might not have been a baptism
in the strictest sense, there s no denying that floodwater has redeeming properties. So, even though
he wasn t trying to drown himself, Gatsby cleansed himself of his sin when he did. He didn t realize
that he needed redemption, but redemption came to him anyway. And it came to him through an

Love Exposed In James Baldwin s If Beale Street Could Talk
A world full of hatred, lies, and discrimination can make life a bit
unbearable. Nevertheless, as it is demonstrated in If Beale Street Could Talk , by James
Baldwin, if one possesses the power of love one can withstand almost anything that comes his or
her way. This does not mean simply having love between a man and a woman; but also having
parental and even human love. If someone has love from all three sources, then the
world wouldn t seem as bad as people make it out to be.

Fonny s only hope in winning this case was his alibi and hopefully his lawyer;
who eventually became close with Tish s family. He tried everything in his power to
help release Fonny and keep the cost down. But they did not succeed. Fonny was eventually
released on bail after multiple family members took on extra jobs, and his father began stealing
goods from work to sell. Once Fonny was released everyone thought everything could go back to
normal; but they were mistaken. The only question left to ask, would Fonny be proven innocent
or guilty?
While Tish was down and all hope was lost, it was love that helped her overcome
adversity. For example having her father s love and support the entire time. She recalls him
saying to her,
Get that baby here, safe and sound. We ll get Fonny out of jail. I promise. (Baldwin 134)
Also the memories of Fonny kept her going. Fonny was always there for her, to love her, to
care for her, and to protect her. Tish carrying a child and Fonny being in
jail, made her realize just how much she actually loved and why they both fell for each
other. The love that Tish had is what kept her believing that things could get

What is a common American food market? To me, an International student from China, the first
impression of American markets is the large dense stores like Wal Marts that include all kind of
food and supplies. It is a wonderful place that has efficiency and cheapness. However, in Michael
Pollan s article Food Fight, he mentions Although cheap food is good politics, it turns out there are
significant costs to the environment, to public health ... food has come back into view. (Pollan 109)

People that have lower income cannot afford the price of better food; therefore those people
would choose to shop in large groceries for its lower price and larger quantity. In Pollan s word,
supermarkets sell cheap and unhealthy food to consumers while Farmer s Market can afford
consumers better options. However People can still get better organic food in supermarkets at lower
price these days. It actually applies that supermarkets nowadays are serving better quality food
from local farms just as what Pollan s idea of Farmers Market but with wholesale price. Consumers
now prefer supermarkets for its increasing better quality food and stable price.
Also, as I mentioned before, supermarket is really convenient for consumers for not only having
better quality food in lower price but also serving multi options in a large amount. Compare to
the supermarkets, the space of Farmer s Market is limited, which leads to the food options are
limited. Farmer s Market cannot satisfy every consumer s need of food. From what I observed
in Berkley s Farmers Market, the food options is really being restricted. Farmer s can only get
food that is easy to be carried and kept like fruits, vegetables and made up articles for selling, and
consumers, in the other hand, have limited options. Also, not everyone has the ability to get the

A Brief Biography of Jane Austen
Jane Austen was truly a woman of her time. Not only did her level of education soar over most
women of her time, she truly cared about the people around her. Austen s passion for her family
was just as strong as her passion for reading and writing. Austen strived to learn more everyday.
She was one of the most widely read writers in English Literature. (Biography of Jane Austen1) Jane
Austen was born December 16, 1775 in Steventon, Village in Hampshire.
Austen received a better education then most women of her time. (Collins, K.K. 1) Jane Austen
was taught mostly by her father and her five brothers whom expected Austen to have a stellar
education. Austen also learned from the impressive library her father had in their home.
Fortunately, Austen had a better education than most women. The earliest writing recovered was
when she only eleven years old. Her family always strived for her to have the best education.
Austen and her sister Cassandra were always going to different boarding schools. After Austen
caught typhus and almost died, she mostly was educated at home. Austen s parents decided to
send her and her sister Cassandra to boarding school again after she recovered from her illness.
After a year in boarding school both sisters returned to home because the family could not afford it

The True Face of Unethical Humor
Following Chaucer s description of the Miller in the General Prologue, The Miller s Tale reveals
that the Miller is more complex than his appearance initially suggests. Given its bawdy and
humorous nature, the Miller s story consists of events of cuckoldry, foolishness, and secrets
(1720, 1718, and 1719). As the teller of such a tale, the Miller would immediately be classified as
a crude man, interested only in the physical appeal of women. However, as the tale unfolds, it
imparts the Miller s unexpected empathy as he commiserates with Alison, who is trapped by the
norms of society. The Miller s story portrays not only the Miller s expected vulgar and deceptive
characteristics but also his surprisingly sympathetic nature.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Miller displays complete apathy for the norms of society through his satire of the
metaphysical Knight and clergyman. Furthermore, the Miller s bawdy nature progressively
worsens as he initially begins with his songs of prostitution and later describes a woman s
private areas, an action of atrocious audacity and low thinking, but he asserts is noble (1718).
Thus, in his bawdy rebellion, the Miller solely focuses on his lewd tale, disregarding the norms
of society. The Miller s deceptive qualities influence the characters actions in his story. During
his pilgrimage with the Miller, Chaucer discovers the habits of the golden thumb Miller and

In their affair, both Nicholas and Alison devise a plan to trick the jealous John. While speaking
to John alone, Nicholas warns him of a flood to come and states he must not waste words on the
wise; however, Nicholas tricks the so called wise carpenter and has intercourse with John s wife

his characters in their misdemeanors, exemplifying his immoral nature; however, every apple on

Strangelove: Or how I Learned to Stop worrying and Love the bomb , was exposed to the world
during perhaps, one of the most fragile and tense political climates of all time. Kubrick s utterly
ironic black comedy that plays on the possibility of nuclear obliteration was based loosely on the
celebrated 1958 novel, Red Alert by Peter George but differed in the fact that the film was highly
satirical. That Kubrick even so boldly dared to make a film that openly mocked the situation... Show

Merkin is also a type of wig, the president is bold and it s common for most men to feel
apprehension towards loosing their hair, this is cleverly reflected in Muffley s anxious personality.
Buck Turgidson is another name with certain connotations; a buck refers to an adult animal such as
a dear, the character definitely displays multiple animalistic (a doctrine that humans are merely
animals with no spiritual nature) attitudes towards the soviets (he particularly dislikes the Russian
ambassador), describing them as commie bastards , perhaps not something you might expect to
hear in the War room of the Pentagon. The name Buck Turgidson also insinuates a dominant male

notorious serial killer that cut the throats of prostitutes from the slums of London, In an interview

Character Analysis of Sir Toby Belch in ShakespeareВ
ґs...
Comedy is by far the most influential factor in deciding whether or not a story is entertaining to its
audience, due to its ability to create a more relaxed and pleasurable environment in the plot. From
the playful awkwardness of Anne Shirley, to the witty banter of detectives Tommy and Tuppence, it
is evident that comedic characters have always been appreciated and acknowledged in literature. Sir
Toby Belch is but one of many amusing characters, and is by far one of the most humorous. While
Shakespeare s Twelfth Night is surrounded around an issue of romantic entanglement, Sir Toby s
very presence is enough to lighten the mood and accentuate the comedic theme of the story through
his creation of problems and unique personality.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is one of the most amusing scenes in the play, followed by Belch s famous attempt at
getting Sir Andrew to accost Olivia s chamber maid; Maria which resulted in utter confusion. In
addition, Sir Toby also delivers several witty and comedic comments to divert the attention from
a supposedly serious love affair between Malvolio and Olivia to the events taking place behind
the ever famous box tree. Here s an overweening rouge (II v 27) and O for a stone bow to hit him
in the eye! (II v 43) are samples of the remarks made by Sir Toby while he observes Malvolio in
hiding. Although all these examples were mere results of a drunken night or craving for fun on Sir
Toby s part, as an audience they were received as cheerful moments in the play that amended their
attention from the surrounding melancholy. It also demonstrates his unique capability to amuse
onlookers no matter how intense a situation is, and trumps his unappealing and carefree attitude.
Furthermore, another of the countless reasons why Sir Toby Belch is the most enjoyable character
in Twelfth Night is pertaining to his whimsical and absurd personality that is like none other s in
the play. This intrigues the audience and compels them to enjoy every moment that he appears on
stage, seeing as though a dull statement from Sir Toby has not yet been found in his dialogue.

Prejudice In Harper Lee s Go Set A Watchman
Harper Lee once said, Prejudice, a dirty word, and faith, a clean one, have something in
common: they both begin where reason ends. In her novel, Go Set A Watchman, Jean Louise
Finch comes back home from her job in New York to take care of her father and along the way,
she ends up uncovering many secrets about her hometown and family. Will she ever view her
friends and family in the same manner as she did when she was young? The South had recently
lost the civil war but were slowly gaining rights back. African Americans became free from
slavery and the Supreme Court s Brown v. Board of Education and the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People become a huge controversy. Jean Louise follows her father,
Atticus, and her childhood sweetheart, Henry, to a council meeting, where Atticus introduces a

Rational Choice Theory In Crime
The rational choice theory is a point of view developed by criminologists that looks into the
decision making behind committing a crime. People make logical decisions to commit crimes.
Rational choice has to do with whether the possible pleasure from committing the crime will be
greater than the pain if the offender is caught. While the rational choice theory can explain most
reasons why people commit crimes, it can not explain all of them. This paper will look at three
types of criminals and how rational choice theory applies to them. The first criminals this paper
will look at are burglars. The rational choice theory can be applied to most burglars by looking at
three main questions criminals will ask themselves. First, what is the likelihood of getting caught?
Second, if I do get caught, how bad is the punishment? Third, what is the benefit of committing the
crime? Of the over two million burglaries in the US last, only 13% of burglars were arrested. In
Iowa, the maximum sentence for burglary is 25 years. The final deciding factor for the potential
burglar is if he thinks the value of what he might steal outweighs the potential danger of the crime.
With such a low percentage of burglars being caught it could be perfectly rational to commit the
crime. The second criminal group to look at are murderers. Since murder is intentional, with malice,
and possibly premeditation the rational choice theory applies because the murderer had time to
weigh the pros and cons of the

The Impact Of The Indian Removal On Americans And Indians
Indian Removal The Indian removal affected both Americans and Indians drastically in many
ways. Good things came out of it, and horrible things also did. The attitudes and policies of the
American government that changed over time, the responses and reactions of the Indians and
Americans to removal, and the effect of removal on the Indians are traced from the American
Revolution to the 1830s. At first, the attitudes and polices of the Americans desired to integrate
the Indians, but after the American Revolution, those things started to change for the Indians
(particularly those associated with the tribes who actually did fight against the Patriots) who
were perceived as enemies just like the British were. People like Thomas Jefferson viewed the
Indians as noble savages . Jefferson felt the only way they could vindicate themselves, was if they
chose to live and adapt to the ways of the white man. Jefferson wanted them to live the agricultural
lifestyle the rest of the country was living. The Indians did not have any interest in this way of life
and preferred to continue on with their own traditions and culture. Events and like the Black Hawk
War, the First Seminole War, the Second Seminole war, confrontations with Tecumseh s
Confederation, the Creek Wars, scalping, massacres at forts like Mims and other events attributed
to this change. Greed for the land and concern for how the Indians would fare in society played a
part also. The Indians had two options; they could

Analysis Of The Book Omnivore s Dilemma
In the book Omnivore s Dilemma and the article Eat Food: Food Defined by Michael Pollan,
Pollan informs us of the dangers of eating processed foods. He goes on to explain that in the
modern age of today, our diets are majorly composed of processed food, leading to health
complications such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Pollan advises us that we must stop
eating processed foodand instead eat real food, in which he lists ways of obtaining real food, such
as going to farmer s markets. However I challenge Pollan s approach to obtaining real food as it is
too costly and complicated, and instead I will propose a different approach to obtaining real food

Rules such as staying away from foods that our ancestors wouldn t recognize or contain high
fructose corn syrup. Pollan claims that buying food from farmers solves the complicated issue
of our diets. I don t believe this solves the omnivore s dilemma, it further complicates it. Pollan
fails to define what real food is, if he could have just specifically defined it as an organically
grown or living specimen that contains biological cells, and isn t processed, it would prevent us
from second guessing while shopping for real food. Also, even though we should eat more real
foods, there have been cases of produce being infected with bacteria or chemicals, meat being
injected with chemically made steroids and hormones. Obtaining real food isn t as easy as
reading the food labels or staying away from the center of the grocery store as Pollan describes
it. After observing the potential flaws of Pollan s approach to obtaining real food, I have found
ways of obtaining real all natural food, without over spending or worrying about processed
ingredients and bacteria/steroids. I strongly believe we can achieve this by using traditional ways
of obtaining food, such as hunting, fishing, and house gardening/farming. I myself and like many
others have taken action to obtain real food, food that is 100% natural, food that we know exactly
where it comes from.

Literary Analysis Of The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall ...
Rachell Burns
English 1302 Section 155
October 26, 2015
Symbolism in Literature Writers often use a myriad of different literary techniques to express
different ideas to those who read their work. One of the most common tools authors utilize would
be the use of symbols to portray an abstract meaning different from the literal interpretation of the
text. This element of a story helps connect an object or idea with the greater meaning within a
story through literary analysis. This helps make the moral of the story more meaningful to the
specific reader. In The Jilting of Granny Weatherall, A Jury of Her Peers, and A Very Old Man with
Enormous Wings, Katherine Porter, Susan Glaspell, and Gabriel Marquez use one or more
predominant symbols to enforce the integrity of the message they are trying to convey to their
readers. One example of strong symbolism is in The Jilting of Granny Weatherall, by Katherine
Porter when the author uses the color blue as a way to connect the present with different phases in
the life of Granny Weatherall, the main character who comes to accept the inevitability of her
own death. The color is first used to describe the, white stone china jars with blue whirligigs and
words painted on them: coffee, tea, sugar, ginger, cinnamon, allspice, (Porter) in the neatly kept
home of her youth. The author seems to use the color to bring to life a part of Granny s life when
she was young, energetic, and kept a well organized house. The next time the

A saturated fat does not have and double bonds while an unsaturated fat has at least one double
bond. This means that saturated fats are solid at room temperature because the single bonds form a

fats creates kinks in the molecule making them liquids at room temperature. Another difference is
that saturated fats have a long shelf life while unsaturated fats spoil quickly. Unsaturated fats are

Additionally, research has been done that examines the perceptions of school counselor
effectiveness, as well as the usefulness of available supervision (Borders Usher, 1992; Henderson
Lampe, 1992). During a school counseling master s education program, there is ample supervision,
both on site and through the university, during the practicum and internship field experiences
(Peterson Deuschle, 2006; Studer Oberman, 2006). However, it has been noted that clinical
supervision of school counselors post graduation has not been utilized in the most effective way
(Linton Deuschle, 2006). Several studies have examined the reason behind the lack of effective
supervision within a school setting. Some researchers suggest that there is incongruence between
the daily tasks of school counselors and models of clinical supervision most often utilized (Luke,
Ellis, Bernard, 2011). There also appears to be limited research on whether school counselor
directors are being provided best practices methods of formal education and training for their
positions.
Although it is vital to continue to conduct research on the development of professional school
counselors, researchers must also allocate attention to explore what resources are needed to educate
and train a school counselor director to the standards set forth by ASCA and to determine whether
opportunities currently exist to receive this education and training.

The Masque (Mask) of the Red D, William Wilson, Tale of...
Landscape in Masque of the Red Death, William Wilson, Tale of the Ragged Mountains, and House
of Usher
A careful reading of Poe s tales will quickly reveal the importance that landscape plays in the
development of each literary work. Ragged Mountains has both a surreal and realistic landscape
allowing Poe to use both the mental and the physical environment to explain his tale. This technique
is also found in The Fall of the House of Usher, William Wilson, and The Masque of the Red Death.
In these tales too the reader may tend to focus on the action at hand, and the psychological details,
because that is what we are prone to do with Poe stories. However, it is also important to
understand that physical landscape as well. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The last part of the story has the house being swallowed into the ground, with the Ushers inside.
Roderick had been slowly losing his sanity, and the fissure had slowly been widening until it was
no longer barely perceptible but a crack that brought the house down. There is no doubt that Poe
used this house and its surroundings to hint at what was going to happen.
In William Wilson, the descriptions of the setting are not as in your face as in Ragged Mountains
or House of Usher, but they are very significant. Throughout the piece, Poe continues to describe
the schoolhouse that the two Wilsons attend. Wilson (the narrator) discusses his first recollections
of the schoolhouse, and uses such phrases as dream like, misty looking and deeply shadowed. On
first reading, I did not really pay much attention to these phrases, but after I thought about them in
the context of the storyline, I went back through and paid more attention. In class, Catherine
Dudley sited the annotated text as saying gates and doors are important symbols, for they often
mark the threshold between one world and another. The other world here is the outside real world.
I found this really interesting, because I had had the idea that perhaps there was really just one
Wilson, and the second Wilson was just a personification of the

Moot Court Panel 1
A.C.L.U and Planned Parenthood v. Pence Opinion
The case of A.C.L.U and Planned Parenthood v. Pence has brought attention to the Supreme Court
with the question of which of the two is of greater importance: the duty to honor the woman s
autonomy versus the duty to respect potential life. Indiana s governor, Mike Pence, has signed a
House Enrolled Act No.1337 to amend the Indiana health code, which will go in effect on July 1 of
2016. The act affects abortions in several ways which include that doctors much provide perinatal
hospice care information to women considering abortion after receiving a diagnosis of a lethal
fetal anomaly, prohibits all abortions solely based on fetus s race, color, national origin, ancestry,
sex, or diagnosis of the fetus having any disability, and lastly requires the women to take
responsibility financially for the disposal of the remain of any abortion or miscarriage. After the act
was signed into law, A.C.L.U of Indiana and Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky sued
Governor Pence on the grounds that the law was unconstitutional. The A.C.L.U and Planned
Parenthood won in the district court. The case was appealed to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and
was reversed. Today, the court responds to the petitioners appeal by holding that Indiana s House
Enrolled Act No.1337 is unconstitutional. This decision stems from the recognition that the law

The Disease Of Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is a multisystem, inflammatory illness. It is caused by the bacteria Borrelia
burgdorferi. It is a vector borne infection (which means it is spread directly from one host to
another) transmitted specifically through the bite of an infected tick (Mayo Clinic: Lyme Disease
Definition, Aug. 27, 2015). There are certain risk factors which can increase one s chance of
contracting Lyme disease. For example: where a person lives can heighten one s likelihood of
getting this illness. Wherever deer or white footed mice are high in population, ticks are likely to be
as well, since these animals are their main food source. Ticks also thrive in heavily wooded and
grassy areas, so, if a person lives or works in such a place, they... Show more content on

8, 2006). Therefore, one s best protection against infection of this bacteria relies entirely on
preventative measures. First of all, avoid wooded, grassy areas, which generally have a high tick
population. Furthermore, if one must venture into such an area, cover up in light colored
clothing to improve one s ability to spot a tick and obstruct the tick s path to the skin. Tucking
pant legs into the top of one s socks is an effective measure, as is wearing hats and gloves, and
sticking to trails as much as possible. Secondly, invest in tick repellent; there are many chemical
products, such as DEET, or natural protections, like vinegar mixed with essential oil and water,
available. Tick proof your property by clearing away brush and tall grass. Also, be mindful that
when you spend time outdoors check yourself, your children, and pets frequently for ticks. Ticks
like to burrow in dark, warm areas that are difficult to spot: the underarm, groin, hair line and the
back of the knee. Depending on what stage a tick is in its life cycle, it will feed on its host for 3
10 days. Although, it has been reported that the sooner a tick is removed,

Industrial Economy During The Gilded Age
Peter Nguyen
Hartlaub
Modern U.S.
5/12/16
At the turn of the 19th century also known as the Gilded Age, many immigrants came to the
United States looking for opportunities to live a new life that they were not able to live back
home. Many of them may have had hopes of finding a miraculous career that would bring them
fame and fortune just like Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Morgan did. But in reality it was not as
glamorous and prosperous as it may have seemed to be. Instead it was filled with greed and
corruption. Although the United States experienced an economic boom, it created an extremely
wealthy upper class. Thus only widening the wealth gap between the rich and poor during this era.
Near the last decades of the 19th century, America s industrial economy skyrocketed. As these
industrial leaders like Carnegie and Rockefeller not only lead the expansion through their respective
industries, but revolutionized businesses while crushing free market competition in the process. As

The factories housed the latest technology of the Gilded Age, such as the assembly line. The
mass production that the assembly line brought about made the rich richer, but did nothing to
help the poor. They were working long hours in sometimes extremely dangerous conditions. The
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire was considered one of the deadliest industrial disaster in the
history of the city. Since, the owners locked the doors to the stairwells and exits due to theft and
unauthorized breaks many of the workers were trapped with nowhere to go. As a result 147
garment workers died from smoking inhalation and falling to their deaths. In response a
newspaper published an article titled Fire Trap Victims Buried Draft New Law to Save Shop
Workers, covers the stories of the survivors and witnesses as well as questioning who was at fault

  • 2. Declaration of Independence from My Parents Bradley W. McCorkle English 3 Honors Mrs. Colagross 24 May 2013 Formal Speech of Animal Farm By: George Orwell Old Major, a prize winning boar, gathers the animals of the Manor Farm for a meeting in the big barn. He tells them of a dream he has had in which all animals live together with no human beings to oppress or control them. He tells the animals that they must work toward such a paradise and teaches them a song called Beasts of England, in which his dream vision is lyrically described. The animals greet Major s vision with great enthusiasm. When he dies only three nights after the meeting, three younger pigs, Snowball, Napoleon, and Squealer formulate his main principles into a philosophy called Animalism. Late one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Symbols: Animal Farm Animal Farm, known at the beginning and the end of the novel as the Manor Farm, symbolizes Russia and the Soviet Union under Communist Party rule. But more generally, Animal Farm stands for any human society, be it capitalist, socialist, fascist, or communist. It possesses the internal structure of a nation, with a government (the pigs), a police force or army (the dogs), a working class (the other animals), and state holidays and rituals. Its location amid a number of hostile neighboring farms supports its symbolism as a political entity with diplomatic concerns. The Barn The barn at Animal Farm, on whose outside walls the pigs paint the Seven Commandments and, later, their revisions, represents the collective memory of a modern nation. The many scenes in which the ruling class pigs alter the principles of Animalism and in which the working class animals puzzle over but accept these changes represent the way an institution in power can revise a community s concept of history to bolster its control. If the working class believes history to lie on the side of their oppressors, they are less likely to question oppressive practices. Moreover, the oppressors, by revising their nation s conception of its origins and development, gain control of the nation s very identity, and the oppressed soon come to depend upon the authorities for their communal sense of self. The Windmill The great windmill symbolizes the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Cruelty And Cruelty In The Country Of Iraq I am writing to inform you of the cruelty going on in the country of Iraq. I have been traveling the country as a photographer and I have managed to earn the trust of Iraqi soldiers who are performing acts of torture on prisoners. According to the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq, Iraq has one of the world s oldest cultural histories, boasts a rich heritage and has a long reflected cultural diversity. Although Iraqis generally are a religious and conservative people, there are strong secular tendencies in the country. (See Fig. 1) Fig. 1: Iraq on a world map. Source: Iraq in the world May 4, 2011. November 1, 2017 (https:/ /commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Iraq_in_the_world_(W3).svg) Torture has always been apart of Iraq s along with many other countries cultures. Even though Iraq has been a part of the Iraqi people s history, it still goes against the rights of men and women to be imprisoned with no probable cause and then tortured until the government or another individual can get information out of the prisoners whether it is true or not. In Kenny Paul D. article The Meaning of torture , he states that torture is the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something. There are many different types of torture from rape, to both physical and mental torture. According to Mosul Torture Exposed, prisoners in Iraq were hung from the ceiling with their arms tied behind their backs. The men and women who are imprisoned, are whipped, shocked, raped, and the Iraqis who were performing the torture would add weights to the men s backs that they hung from the ceiling. (See Fig. 2) The Iraqi soldiers also threatened the men s families by saying that they would kill or rape the women if they did not confess to the crimes the men had committed, whether the accusations were true or not. • 4. Lady Liberty Research Paper The Statue of Liberty, also known as Lady Liberty, for me is the most intriguing part of New York City. It is a symbol of hope, freedom, and a better life in the United States. It is widely known that Lady Liberty was the first thing immigrants saw when they came to America, this architectural structure was a symbol of hope and freedom. What intrigues me the most is, Why would France just give us a an expensive copper statue? I never understood this until right now, everyone knows what she symbolizes, she is the Statue of Liberty. The word liberty is related to the word liberated , which means to free. For example, U.S. soldiers helped liberate Jews from the concentration camps in Germany after World War 2. The statue was given to us to represent freedom, the concept on which our great country was born on. Not just any freedom, a true freedom, a freedom in which we are not subservient to a king. In a sense, we are being liberated from being servants to the kingdom. It is our country and we want to protect and defend it because we are fighting for a cause, not just some person who wears a crown because of the family he was born in to.... They followed the ways of the United Statesby starting the French Revolution in the kingdom of France. The bourgeois or middle class believed the citizens should have a part in the politics of their country and should not be run by a few aristocrats. France wanted true freedom like the U.S.A., they wanted to be liberated from there kings like us. The Statue of Liberty represents that freedom. • 5. Pop Culture And Popular Culture Popular Culture s Influence: How Lucille Ball Inspired Me Everyone develops into a different person, but there s no doubt that we take inspiration from others. Being exposed to horror movies at a young age by one s parents can make a child fearful, or give them an appreciation for movies and what makes them scary. Likewise, being introduced to comedy at a young age can mold a child s taste in humor or appreciation for the genre. Popular culturehas helped influenced many of us, and it has made us the people we are today; after all, haven t we all heard a child say they want to grow up and be a superhero? These icons, such as superheroes or actors, have helped inspire people both negatively and positively. One icon which has inspired me is Lucille Ball, her influence has made me more optimistic because she overcame great difficulties in her life and because the characters she played were very independent and outgoing. I grew up watching Lucille Ball on her show I Love Lucy, and I was inspired to be optimistic because of the manner in which she overcame challenges in her life. Because she was optimistic when realizing her goals, the pop culture icon has influenced me greatly. Apple s Iphone 5 Personal Evaluation Apple s iPhone 5 Personal Evaluation Personal research and evaluations are excellent ways to discover pertinent information about a product that a consumer wishes to purchase. In addition, reviews come from multiple sources: experts or consumers, both play an important role to the consumer and are thought to be valued resources. In fact, reviews and information are easier to acquire due to the modern technology and increased use of the internet among consumers. Reviews and research help consumers to decide whether or not they are going to purchase a specific product, such as Apple s iPhone5s or the 5c, by providing information and specifications. When comparing consumer reviews along with personal knowledge about the Apple iPhone 5 to expert reviews based on design, software, and functionally, it is clear that personal evaluations are the best, as they are first hand knowledge. • 7. Analysis Of George Weigel s Book Letters Of A Young... Through thick and thin, Catholicism has been around for quite a long time. With millions of followers from around the globe, it has grown to become one of the largest religious faiths. Every single one of these Christians has their own unique story about how their faith has significantly affected their lives. In his book, George Weigel shares his experience as a Catholic growing up in late 1950 s and 1960 s in Baltimore. On page 9 of his book Letters to a Young Catholic , he says The real Catholic difference ... was, at bottom, a way of seeing the world (Weigel 9). This means that what separates a Catholic from the rest is our experience and knowledge of God, through which we are given the power to experience the world differently than most others can. I do feel this way as well. Being Catholic, I feel that I definitely experience the world differently than others. Whenever I see or hear about a tragic event that has occurred, I can hold solace in the idea that everything is all part of God s master plan and that it will all work out in the end. If I am every struggling for anything, whether it an exorbitant amount of homework I have for a weekend or an difficult test or quiz coming up that I haven t had time to study for, I know that I can trust in God and that everything will be alright in the long run. Being Catholic has also taught me to be thankful for the smaller things in life, because it is the smaller things that can add up to make a bad day turn around. Like ... • 10. Labor Vs. Capital During The Late 1800s The ensuing conflict, between labor vs. capital, during the late 1800s initiated a struggle of power in the workforce between the rich industrialists (or corporate leaders) and the middle class/lower class workers. The Capitalists had intervened with the protests orchestrated by the workers, ensuring that the power remains with them. The strategies of the industrialists and the unique ways of protesting from the workers, contributes to spur a vigorous argument between the employers and their employees. The workers tried their best to ameliorate their working conditions by forming numerous unions, trying to fix currency (gold to paper) to economically help themselves, refusing to go to work, resorting to violence and non violence, etc. However, the Corporate leaders kept an upper hand and dissolved the workers ambitions by hiring scabs, creating a strong relationship with the military (Pullman strike), controlling and fixing policies at work, hiring immigrants for cheap labor, etc. Throughout the late 1800s, the corporate leaders have been able to successfully prevent workers who had resorted to: forming unions, protests (ex. Pullman strike and Homestead strike), violence (ex. Haymarket Sq. Riot), etc., from achieving a radical solution to the workers issues with the management by using several different strategies including but not limited to: hiring scabs /immigrants in the Homestead strike, using government support in the Pullman strike and keeping the power on their side ... It actually applies that supermarkets nowadays are serving better quality food from local farms just as what Pollan s idea of Farmers Market but with wholesale price. • 21. The True Face of Unethical Humor Following Chaucer s description of the Miller in the General Prologue, The Miller s Tale reveals that the Miller is more complex than his appearance initially suggests. Given its bawdy and humorous nature, the Miller s story consists of events of cuckoldry, foolishness, and secrets (1720, 1718, and 1719). As the teller of such a tale, the Miller would immediately be classified as a crude man, interested only in the physical appeal of women. However, as the tale unfolds, it imparts the Miller s unexpected empathy as he commiserates with Alison, who is trapped by the norms of society. The Miller s story portrays not only the Miller s expected vulgar and deceptive characteristics but also his surprisingly sympathetic nature.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Miller displays complete apathy for the norms of society through his satire of the metaphysical Knight and clergyman. Furthermore, the Miller s bawdy nature progressively worsens as he initially begins with his songs of prostitution and later describes a woman s private areas, an action of atrocious audacity and low thinking, but he asserts is noble (1718). Thus, in his bawdy rebellion, the Miller solely focuses on his lewd tale, disregarding the norms of society. The Miller s deceptive qualities influence the characters actions in his story. During his pilgrimage with the Miller, Chaucer discovers the habits of the golden thumb Miller and describes him as a fox (1712). The Miller would cheat people by steal[ing] corn and charg[ing] for it three times (1712). The Miller s characters also use guile as frequently as the Miller does. In their affair, both Nicholas and Alison devise a plan to trick the jealous John. While speaking to John alone, Nicholas warns him of a flood to come and states he must not waste words on the wise; however, Nicholas tricks the so called wise carpenter and has intercourse with John s wife after John falls asleep (1727). Furthermore, Absolom begs for a kiss from Alison, but she beard[s] him, another instance of bawdy deceit (1730). Thus, the Miller s disposition of treachery propels his characters in their misdemeanors, exemplifying his immoral nature; however, every apple on the tree is not rotten. ... • 23. Character Analysis of Sir Toby Belch in ShakespeareВ ґs... Comedy is by far the most influential factor in deciding whether or not a story is entertaining to its audience, due to its ability to create a more relaxed and pleasurable environment in the plot. From the playful awkwardness of Anne Shirley, to the witty banter of detectives Tommy and Tuppence, it is evident that comedic characters have always been appreciated and acknowledged in literature. Sir Toby Belch is but one of many amusing characters, and is by far one of the most humorous. While Shakespeare s Twelfth Night is surrounded around an issue of romantic entanglement, Sir Toby s very presence is enough to lighten the mood and accentuate the comedic theme of the story through his creation of problems and unique personality.... This is one of the most amusing scenes in the play, followed by Belch s famous attempt at getting Sir Andrew to accost Olivia s chamber maid; Maria which resulted in utter confusion. In addition, Sir Toby also delivers several witty and comedic comments to divert the attention from a supposedly serious love affair between Malvolio and Olivia to the events taking place behind the ever famous box tree. Here s an overweening rouge (II v 27) and O for a stone bow to hit him in the eye! (II v 43) are samples of the remarks made by Sir Toby while he observes Malvolio in hiding. Although all these examples were mere results of a drunken night or craving for fun on Sir Toby s part, as an audience they were received as cheerful moments in the play that amended their attention from the surrounding melancholy. It also demonstrates his unique capability to amuse onlookers no matter how intense a situation is, and trumps his unappealing and carefree attitude. Furthermore, another of the countless reasons why Sir Toby Belch is the most enjoyable character in Twelfth Night is pertaining to his whimsical and absurd personality that is like none other s in the play. This intrigues the audience and compels them to enjoy every moment that he appears on stage, seeing as though a dull statement from Sir Toby has not yet been found in his dialogue. • 29. Rational Choice Theory In Crime The rational choice theory is a point of view developed by criminologists that looks into the decision making behind committing a crime. People make logical decisions to commit crimes. Rational choice has to do with whether the possible pleasure from committing the crime will be greater than the pain if the offender is caught. While the rational choice theory can explain most reasons why people commit crimes, it can not explain all of them. This paper will look at three types of criminals and how rational choice theory applies to them. The first criminals this paper will look at are burglars. The rational choice theory can be applied to most burglars by looking at three main questions criminals will ask themselves. First, what is the likelihood of getting caught? Second, if I do get caught, how bad is the punishment? Third, what is the benefit of committing the crime? Of the over two million burglaries in the US last, only 13% of burglars were arrested. In Iowa, the maximum sentence for burglary is 25 years. The final deciding factor for the potential burglar is if he thinks the value of what he might steal outweighs the potential danger of the crime. With such a low percentage of burglars being caught it could be perfectly rational to commit the crime. The second criminal group to look at are murderers. Since murder is intentional, with malice, and possibly premeditation the rational choice theory applies because the murderer had time to weigh the pros and cons of the ... Good things came out of it, and horrible things also did. The attitudes and policies of the American government that changed over time, the responses and reactions of the Indians and Americans to removal, and the effect of removal on the Indians are traced from the American Revolution to the 1830s. At first, the attitudes and polices of the Americans desired to integrate the Indians, but after the American Revolution, those things started to change for the Indians (particularly those associated with the tribes who actually did fight against the Patriots) who were perceived as enemies just like the British were. People like Thomas Jefferson viewed the Indians as noble savages . Jefferson felt the only way they could vindicate themselves, was if they chose to live and adapt to the ways of the white man. Jefferson wanted them to live the agricultural lifestyle the rest of the country was living. The Indians did not have any interest in this way of life and preferred to continue on with their own traditions and culture. Events and like the Black Hawk War, the First Seminole War, the Second Seminole war, confrontations with Tecumseh s Confederation, the Creek Wars, scalping, massacres at forts like Mims and other events attributed to this change. Rachell Burns English 1302 Section 155 October 26, 2015 Symbolism in Literature Writers often use a myriad of different literary techniques to express different ideas to those who read their work. One of the most common tools authors utilize would be the use of symbols to portray an abstract meaning different from the literal interpretation of the text. This element of a story helps connect an object or idea with the greater meaning within a story through literary analysis. This helps make the moral of the story more meaningful to the specific reader. In The Jilting of Granny Weatherall, A Jury of Her Peers, and A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, Katherine Porter, Susan Glaspell, and Gabriel Marquez use one or more predominant symbols to enforce the integrity of the message they are trying to convey to their readers. One example of strong symbolism is in The Jilting of Granny Weatherall, by Katherine Porter when the author uses the color blue as a way to connect the present with different phases in the life of Granny Weatherall, the main character who comes to accept the inevitability of her own death. The color is first used to describe the, white stone china jars with blue whirligigs and words painted on them: coffee, tea, sugar, ginger, cinnamon, allspice, (Porter) in the neatly kept home of her youth. It published the ASCA National Model (2012), which provides a framework for a comprehensive school counseling program that includes four quadrants: Foundation, Delivery, Management, and Accountability. The National Model also offers a detailed account of the role, function, and competencies of professional school counselors. It specifically addresses how the proper use of professional school counselors and implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program can enhance the educationof the whole student at the elementary, middle, or high schoollevel (ASCA,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, research has been done that examines the perceptions of school counselor effectiveness, as well as the usefulness of available supervision (Borders Usher, 1992; Henderson Lampe, 1992). During a school counseling master s education program, there is ample supervision, both on site and through the university, during the practicum and internship field experiences (Peterson Deuschle, 2006; Studer Oberman, 2006). However, it has been noted that clinical supervision of school counselors post graduation has not been utilized in the most effective way (Linton Deuschle, 2006). Several studies have examined the reason behind the lack of effective supervision within a school setting. Some researchers suggest that there is incongruence between the daily tasks of school counselors and models of clinical supervision most often utilized (Luke, Ellis, Bernard, 2011). There also appears to be limited research on whether school counselor directors are being provided best practices methods of formal education and training for their positions. Although it is vital to continue to conduct research on the development of professional school counselors, researchers must also allocate attention to explore what resources are needed to educate and train a school counselor director to the standards set forth by ASCA and to determine whether opportunities currently exist to receive this education and training. • 44. The Masque (Mask) of the Red D, William Wilson, Tale of... Landscape in Masque of the Red Death, William Wilson, Tale of the Ragged Mountains, and House of Usher A careful reading of Poe s tales will quickly reveal the importance that landscape plays in the development of each literary work. Ragged Mountains has both a surreal and realistic landscape allowing Poe to use both the mental and the physical environment to explain his tale. This technique is also found in The Fall of the House of Usher, William Wilson, and The Masque of the Red Death. In these tales too the reader may tend to focus on the action at hand, and the psychological details, because that is what we are prone to do with Poe stories. However, it is also important to understand that physical landscape as well. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The last part of the story has the house being swallowed into the ground, with the Ushers inside. Roderick had been slowly losing his sanity, and the fissure had slowly been widening until it was no longer barely perceptible but a crack that brought the house down. There is no doubt that Poe used this house and its surroundings to hint at what was going to happen. In William Wilson, the descriptions of the setting are not as in your face as in Ragged Mountains or House of Usher, but they are very significant. Throughout the piece, Poe continues to describe the schoolhouse that the two Wilsons attend. Wilson (the narrator) discusses his first recollections of the schoolhouse, and uses such phrases as dream like, misty looking and deeply shadowed. On first reading, I did not really pay much attention to these phrases, but after I thought about them in the context of the storyline, I went back through and paid more attention. In class, Catherine Dudley sited the annotated text as saying gates and doors are important symbols, for they often mark the threshold between one world and another. The other world here is the outside real world. Therefore, one s best protection against infection of this bacteria relies entirely on preventative measures. First of all, avoid wooded, grassy areas, which generally have a high tick population. Furthermore, if one must venture into such an area, cover up in light colored clothing to improve one s ability to spot a tick and obstruct the tick s path to the skin. Tucking pant legs into the top of one s socks is an effective measure, as is wearing hats and gloves, and sticking to trails as much as possible. Secondly, invest in tick repellent; there are many chemical products, such as DEET, or natural protections, like vinegar mixed with essential oil and water, available. Tick proof your property by clearing away brush and tall grass. Also, be mindful that when you spend time outdoors check yourself, your children, and pets frequently for ticks. Ticks like to burrow in dark, warm areas that are difficult to spot: the underarm, groin, hair line and the back of the knee.
