Rogers identified six elements essential for therapeutic change, including three core conditions related to the counselor's qualities: empathy, the ability to understand another's perspective; unconditional positive regard, accepting a client unconditionally; and congruence, the counselor's genuineness. These core conditions allow the counselor to build trust and create an environment where the client feels safe to openly explore issues without fear of judgment. Rogers theorized that when these conditions are fully present, the client is more likely to experience insight and positive personal growth.
