The spine is made up of vertebrae stacked on top of each other that are separated by intervertebral discs. The discs act as cushions between the vertebrae, absorbing pressure and allowing movement and flexibility of the spine. Ligaments and facet joints connect the vertebrae together. There are 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar vertebrae as well as the sacrum and coccyx. The spine provides structure and protection for the spinal cord while allowing movement and flexibility of the body.
