A multidisciplinary teaching method in the aerospace engineering systems fiel...Altair
The purpose of this paper is to present the effectiveness of a new teaching methods through all the graduation process for engineering students, ranging from the BSc to the MSc level.
Two hundred undergraduate students in aerospace engineering at the Politecnico di Torino were involved in this teaching process. The paper presents the organization of the learning process through the different academic years.
The process implicates theoretical lectures, computer laboratories, and experimental workbench, and shows how different multidisciplinary concepts and models, useful for the aerospace systems design, can be presented and then worked again in the next courses. In particular, an example concerning the flight control system is presented underlining how the models can be introduced at the third year, with the support of some engineering tools, and then reprised and developed in more details at the fifth year, with an effective and quick heritage of knowledge.

This is a self-contained three-day short course on the fundamentals of tactical missile design. It provides a system-level, integrated method for missile aerodynamic configuration/propulsion design and analysis and addresses the broad range of alternatives in meeting cost and performance requirements. The methods presented are generally simple closed-form analytical expressions that are physics-based, to provide insight into the primary driving parameters. Configuration sizing examples are presented for rocket-powered, ramjet-powered, and turbojet-powered baseline missiles. Typical values of missile parameters and the characteristics of current operational missiles are discussed, as well as the enabling subsystems and technologies for tactical missiles, the development process, and the current/projected state-of-the-art. The attendees will vote on the relative emphasis of the topics. Over thirty videos illustrate missile development activities and missile performance. Finally, each attendee may design, build, and fly an air-powered rocket that illustrates some of the course design methods.

Space Radiation & It's Effects On Space Systems & Astronauts Technical Traini...Jim Jenkins
This course is designed for technical and management personnel who wish to gain an understanding of the fundamentals and the effects of space radiation on space systems and astronauts. The radiation environment imposes strict design requirements on many space systems and is the primary limitation to human exploration outside of the Earth's magnetosphere. The course specifically addresses issues of relevance and concern for participants who expect to plan, design, build, integrate, test, launch, operate or manage spacecraft and spacecraft subsystems for robotic or crewed missions. The primary goal is to assist attendees in attainment of their professional potential by providing them with a basic understanding of the interaction of radiation with non-biological and biological materials, the radiation environment, and the tools available to simulate and evaluate the effects of radiation on materials, circuits, and humans

A steepest descent algorithm for the optimal control of a cascaded hydropowe...IJECEIAES
Optimal power generation along the cascaded Kainji-Jebba hydroelectric power system had been very difficult to achieve. The reservoirs operating heads are being affected by possible variation in impoundments upstream, stochastic factors that are weather-related, availability of the turbo-alternators and power generated at any time. Proposed in this paper, is an algorithm for solving the optimal release of water on the cascaded hydropower system based on steepest descent method. The uniqueness of this work is the conversion of the infinite dimensional control problem to a finite one, the introduction of clever techniques for choosing the steepest descent step size in each iteration and the nonlinear penalty embedded in the procedure. The control algorithm was implemented in an Excel VBA® environment to solve the formulated Lagrange problem within an accuracy of 0.03%. It is recommended for use in system studies and control design for the optimal power generation in the cascaded hydropower system.

Digital Signal Processing - Practical Techniques, Tips and Tricks Course SamplerJim Jenkins
The goal of this 3-day course is to Introduce, explain, and demonstrate powerful, proven techniques, tips and “tricks of the trade” that can dramatically improve accuracy, speed and efficiency in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) applications.
The concepts are first presented using many colorful, clear figures along with plain English explanations and real-world examples. They are next demonstrated using clearly written MATLAB programs (with graphics). This way the student sees the key equations “in action” which increases intuitive understanding and learning speed. These (free) working programs can also be later modified or adapted by the student for customized, site specific use.
Each student will receive extensive course slides, a CD with MATLAB m-files for demonstration and later adaptation, supplementary materials and references to aid in the understanding and application of these “techniques, tips, and tricks” and a copy of the instructor’s latest book “The Essential Guide to Digital Signal Processing”.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
