  1. This was taken from a webinar on content creation hosted by KISSmetrics last month. The webinar’s host, Matt Kamp, cited this statistic. And since so much media is digital, social is a new opportunity for brands and entrepreneurs to act as publishers.
  2. The biggest social trend over the past year has been the move towards hosted, original content on platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn. This has coincided with increased investments in blogs, social media, and content among companies ranging from startups to corporations.

  4. Social media is a tool to help you achieve your goals. It is not a strategy in and of itself that will solve your problems for you.
  5. Hashtags like #Medicaid4WA are used to generate what’s called “earned media” from Twitter users. In this case, several organizations in Washington state formed a collective movement to encourage support for Medicaid expansion throughout the state. Social media was their tool to do this. But their real goal was to get so much public sentiment that the Washington state legislature would make Medicaid expansion a priority in the 2013 legislative session. This goes back to always thinking about what you really aim to accomplish. You can’t start on social without a clear vision for why you are there and what you want from joining the conversation.
  6. Hashtags are how users on platforms such as Twitter and Instagram search for content that is relevant to them. If you want to reach a specific audience on a platform like Twitter, do your research to find hashtags that your audience will search for.
  7. And easy to achieve within 12-18 months. We can’t predict the future, but you should be realistic about the timeframe involved in achieving your goals.

  9. There are 6 core components of social strategy: CONTENT – have a backlog of content that should last 3-6 months
  10. And never forget that content that you publish on social is owned by them – not you. If you are using a free product like Facebook, then you are the product. Social platforms’ algorithms change constantly, and these control how content on social reaches its audiences.
