Essay Dinner at My Place
Every year on Halloween; my favorite holiday, I had a very special dinner party. It looks like it was
that time of the year again. So I pulled out my phone book and decided to invite a couple of
people over. After putting lots of thought into it, I decided to invite three people: Jesse Berst, Molly
Masland, and JuliaWalker. Now these three people aren t just any three people. They all have
something in common; they know about about online shopping. They are all some type of
reporter and have written articles about online shopping. Jesse Berst is and he did a report called
Online Shopping, The Safe Way; which teaches some great tips on how to shop carefully. Molly
Masland is also a reporter and her story/article was called The Dark... Show more content on

Of course everyone loves cheese, you can t go wrong with cheese. As for dinner, now that took a
little more brainstorming. In the end I concluded that everyone loves chicken. I had it prepared in
a nice creamy sauce and of I had plenty of vegetables. You never know when I vegetarian such as
myself would show up.
Just as I had finished setting things up, the doorbell rang. Jesse Berst was the first to show up;
being the new reporter that he is he is always very punctual. Of course he was dressed in his
usual suit and tie. His white hair was neatly combed back and he had a bottle of wine in his
hand. Here you are, he said politely. After the many thanks and oh s and ah over the wine I ran
to the kicthen to put in refrigerator. Just as I was walking back to the living room the doorbell
rang again. This time it was Julia Walker. She was wearing a simple long black dress and had no
jewerly on except a sivler watch that matched her earings. She was very tall and slender, almost
as tall as Mr. Berst. Just as I was about to introduce them Molly Masland peeked in through the
still slightly opened door. Howdy there, she joyful said like the typical souther woman that she
was. She wore a a pastel colored evening dress with white shoes of course. I made ya ll some of my
simply delicious peach cobbler, she said as she handed me her container.
We all smiled at her smooth and gentle southern accent. Why, it s not everyday we get to hear such

Lowell Mills
The Lowell textile mills
The Lowell textile mills were a new transition in American history that explored working and labor
conditions in the new industrial factories in American. To describe the Lowell Textile mills it
requires a look back in history to study, discover and gain knowledge of the industrial labor and
factory systems of industrial America. These mass production mills looked pretty promising at their
beginning but after years of being in business showed multiple problems and setbacks to the people
involved in them. Lowell mills were located in Lowell, Massachusetts and specialized in
manufacturing cotton cloth. The strong currents from the surrounding streams of water powered
the mills machinery. More often then not, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Physical Descriptions Of The Unicorns
There are many fantastic creatures known to man. They come in all shapes, sizes, and color, and
have a wide array of abilities. Standing majestically among these fantastic creatures is the unicorn.
The unicorn is a unique magical creature, because while many magical creatures have not been
able to maintain their popularity and overall depiction through time periods and across various
cultures, the unicorn has; despite its diverse physical descriptions. The diverse physical
descriptions of the unicorn can be seen in two panels of the The Garden of Earthly Delights
(Hieronymous Bosch). Three unicorns appear on the left panel of the painting. One is a white
unicorn that has a horse s body, cloven feet, and a straight horn with spiral twistings; next to the
white unicorn is a brownish, deerlike unicorn with a curved horn...; and [then] there is a water
unicorn swimming in a pool... with a fish s body, a horselike head, and a goatlike beard (South...

However, no matter how the unicorn is described to look, its character is always depicted as
benevolent, gentle, and kind. The unicorn is still known by these qualities in today s world. The
unicorn s prevalence in society today is another reason why the creature is so unique. Due to past
and current advancements in science and technology, many magical creatures have lost their
popularity because people do not believe in their existence. So why do people still struggle to
deny the unicorn s existence? Why do people still use the unicorn as a symbol for pure and good
characteristics? Some say it s the creature s ties to religion (Sax 2013) while others believe it is the
large impact of the creature on various societies throughout history (Nigg 1995). Regardless of the
reason, the unicorn s ability to transcend the limitations of time, geography, and culture truly make

Natural Gas Must Be A Hydrocarbon Fuel
Although natural gas could be a hydrocarbon fuel, the global warming emissions from its
combustion are much lower than oil.
Natural gas emits 50 to 60 % less greenhouse gas. Considering only tailpipe emissions, natural gas
additionally emits 15 to 20 % less heat trapping gases than oil when burned in today s typical
vehicle
Emissions from smokestacks and tailpipes, however, don t tell the complete story.
The drilling and extraction of natural gas from wells and its transportation in pipelines, ends up in
the leakage of methane, a way more potent global warming gas than carbon dioxide. Preliminary
studies and field measurements show that these questionable fugitive methane emissions vary from
1 to 9 % of total life cycle emissions.
Whether natural gas has lower life cycle greenhouse gas emissions than oil depends on the assumed
leakage rate, the global warming potential of methane over different time frames, the energy
conversion efficiency, and different factors
Cleaner burning than different fossil fuels, the combustion of natural gas produces negligible
amounts of sulfur, mercury, and particulates. Burning natural gas will manufacture nitrogen oxides,
that are precursors to smog, however at lower levels than oil and diesel used for motorcars.
However, despite these advantages, unconventional gas development will have an effect on native
and regional air quality. Some areas where drilling happens have experienced increases in
concentrations of unsafe air pollutants

St Louis Brass Concert Report
This past Thursday, I attended the fourth event in the Presidential concert series. The guest
musicians were the wonderful quintet, Saint Louis Brass. They articulately play each note to create
a melodious combination with their two trumpets, french horn, trombone, and tuba. During their
set, they played a variety of antiqued classics, modern edgy pieces, and smooth jazz. Saint Louis
Brass began their set with a harmonious, traditional 1600s tune. I was amazed at how well all the
sounds from the brass instruments melded together. Before hand, when I thought of brass
instruments, especially trumpets, I thought of the sharp notes often played in jazz; however, the
smooth sounds from the five instruments infiltrated the room, completely filling my body with a
calm peace. The musicians sat, fully engaged in the musicthat buzzed from their lips. I really enjoy
this antiquated piece of music far more than I anticipated. The next song, called Four Times Five,
was quite different from the first. Written by a modern composer, the song had a very different
feeling from any other they played in the show. When they played... Show more content on

Many of the musicians double as professors at different universities; therefore, their knowledge of
the history of brass instruments is quite extensive. First, they played different sized conch shells,
which is the first horns that formed into the song Happy Birthday. They then played many of the
earliest models of the trumpet, which had no valves, and the trombone, that required one to move
their whole body back and forth in order to hit different notes. Additionally, the Saint Louis Brass

Analysis Of Ender s Game By Orson Scott Card
Ender s Game is a science fiction novel written by Orson Scott Card and was published on
January 15, 1985. The story follows Andrew (Ender) Wiggin, a genius boy who is chosen to
attend Battle School in hopes of being the savior of humanity against the alien buggers. Ender s
journey from an outcast into a commander seems to follow the steps of Joseph Campbell s hero s
journey. Joseph Campbell was a writer who discovered after studying stories, religions, and
mythologies, noticed similar themes and structures and wrote The Hero With A Thousand Faces
(later renamed the hero s journey ). The Hero s Journey described the steps he observed when
reading about heroic journeys. The hero s journey is made up of several phases such as an unusual...

Add that up with being a third and Ender is already an outcast at age six. It was not his fault that
he was a Third. It was the government s idea, they were the ones who authorized it how else
could a Third like Ender have got into school? And now the monitor was gone. The experiment
entitled Andrew Wiggin hadn t worked out at all. If they could, he was sure they would like to
rescind the waivers that he had allowed to be born at all. (Card 5). The second stage of a hero s
journey is the call to adventure. Something happens that calls the hero away from their everyday
life and into their quest. For Ender, it was when Graff showed up at the Wiggin s home in chapter
three. The removal of Ender s monitor turned out to be the I.F s final test to see how Ender handled
situations without the aid. Graff arrives at the Wiggin residence to deliver the news and invites
Ender to attend Battle School to commence his training. It takes a bit to sway him but he ultimately
agrees stating that he was in fact born for the sole purpose. He leaves holding Colonel Graff s hand
and Valentine crying for him to return to her. The two steps of crossing the threshold and the
challenges and trials fuse together during the story. Ender crosses the threshold during the fourth
chapter Launch, when he along with nineteen other boys begin their journey to battle school.
Already he is faced with a challenge. The two unknown figures open up the fourth chapter

An Allegory In George Orwell s Animal Farm
An allegory is a story or poem that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden message, typically
involving politics. A great example of an allegory is George Orwell s, Animal Farm. When just
looking at this story, one would think it was just about animals that ran off their owners and then
formed their own lifestyle with an animal leader. On the contrary, if one was to pay attention to the
story they would notice that it is pointing the reader to a time in history. Orwell wrote the story
around 1944 in reference to the Russian Revolution and to slander the Soviet Union. Throughout the
novella, the reader is introduced to the vital characters and is able to connect them to men in
history. For example, Old Major the pig was a symbol of Karl Marx. One can see this through
the personality and Old Major and also through him telling of his dream. In the beginning of the
novel, Major has a dream where all animals were equal. He told the other animals that they did
not have to have short lives that were dominated by labor and hunger for the human s sake. Old
Major asked during the giving of his dream if it was not crystal clear, comrades, that all the evils
of this life of ours spring from the tyranny of human beings? The dream was used to shadow Karl
Marx s Communist Manifesto where Marx presented the evils of feudalism, capitalism, and the
ideal world of communismto inspire the Russian Revolution. Marx believed that everything in the
worlds history could be explained in result of

Mrs Dalloway Suffering Essay
In Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf highlights different experiences of everyday suffering after
World War I. Septimus Smith, a veteran of World War I, loses his identity during his tour.
Clarissa Dalloway and Lucrezia Warren Smith are both suffering as a result of society s
expectations; they both lose their individuality and succumb to their husbands. Many people did
not know how to cope with the change of perspective after the war; some people tried different
forms of treatment, while others chose to ignore the war and move forward. Virginia Woolf
asserts
the idea that depression can only be understood emotionally, not scientifically, ultimately proving
that uneducated women have more wisdom than men after the war. Septimus suffered emotional...

Dalloway was never particularly close with Septimus, but when she heard of his death, she was
able to connect with him emotionally. Similar to Septimus, Mrs. Dalloway did not believe in
bringing children into the world, She had the oddest sense of being herself invisible; unseen;
unknown; there being no more marrying, no more having of children now, but only this
astonishing and rather solemn progress with the rest of them, up Bond Street, this being Mrs.
Dalloway; not even Clarissa any more; this being Mrs. Richard Dalloway (10). Mrs. Dalloway
feels invisible in the world, and her seclusion makes her to want to reject the expectations of
society such as reproduction. Clarissa also feels as though she has lost her identity; instead of
being known as Clarissa, an individual, she feels like she is just Mrs. Dalloway: an extension of
her husband. Mrs. Dalloway s joy comes from her husband, It was due to Richard; she had never
been so happy. Nothing could be slow enough; nothing last too long. No pleasure could equal, she
thought, straightening the chairs, pushing in one book on the shelf, this having done with the
triumphs of youth, lost herself in the process of living... (185). She describes a monotonous
experience of household chores with a sense of strong appreciation and pleasure. Everything she
does has the intention of pleasing Richard, and she feels as if she has lost herself; her feelings are
inauthentic. Clarissa has lost her identity and purpose, so now she

The Characterization Of Benjamin Braddock In The Graduate
The characterization of Benjamin Braddock is apparent through the main focus of the 1967
coming of age film, The Graduate. The point of view, cinematography, score and less so the
dialog gives the audience a detailed look into not only who Benjamin is as a person, but also the
challenges he faces throughout the film. The film focuses on the perspective of Ben himself, never
really giving the audiencea chance to watch much else of anything, really. Occasionally, the camera
angle is intended to be from his perspective, in the case of through the scuba mask or while
watching Elaine. This further emphasizes the focuson what Ben as an individual is doing and
seeing. While the perspective definitely emphasizes what the audience should be focusing on,
they aren t given much of a chance to focus on anything else. The entire film is so strictly set on
Ben, and all other characters as individuals are focused on so little, that the audience can t really
decide what to pay attention to, but rather are told what to. The cinematography plays a large role
in characterizing Benjamin, potentially more so than anything else. The credit scene show Ben on
a moving walkway in an airport with people moving all around him while The Sound of Silence
plays over the expected noises of LAX airport. While the symbolism of the moving walkway seems
to say that ben is simply being moved through life rather than actively moving himself through it,
with life continuing on all around him, more

Change Management Essay
Change Management
Change is not something to be taken lightly. This issue of change is one of the greatest challenges
in the workplace today (Fralix, P., 1998). One of the pitfalls of change within an organization is
employees fear of what change will bring. Will implementing new technologies destroy my job?
Will I be able to keep up with the changes in my organization? These are some of the questions that
bring about employee apprehension to changes in business. This very apprehension can determine
the success or the failure of change within that system. Yet change is inevitable. Much like the
Darwinian theory of survival, the company that can adapt with changes in emerging technologies
will survive in today s society. So how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since change is inevitable, ongoing process, these management levers must constantly be altered
also (1997).
Even though this is not an altogether accurate definition from an instructional technology
standpoint, it does contain factors about change management. Most companies are concerned with
aligning themselves with their marketplace. Who hasn t seen a PetSmart or a KayBee s commercial
where the consumer may order his/her toys for either pet or human online. These corporations have
aligned themselves to their marketplace Ebusiness. Another factor in change management is the
tools to accomplish this smooth transition. Most companies will agree that one must look at
strategy, operations of the actual and the optimal systems, culture of the work environment, and
incentives to those who facilitate the smooth changes. Also change is an ongoing process, so
management of that change is also going to be an ongoing process. In order to prepare for change
within the company, it is important to identify any destabilizing forces that bring about change.
Change can be stimulated by three specific forces external and three specific internal forces to the
organization

Society Political/legal environment Technological developments

Characteristics Of The Classical Era Of Music
Ludwig Van Beethoven was recognized as a great composer in western music. Beethoven was
also known for creating the bridge between the classical and romantic era of music. He is known
for doing this because he took key aspects of the classical era and merged them with key aspects
of the romantic era. The classical era of musicdates from 1775 1825. The classical musicera had a
lighter and more clear texture (Kamien 161). The music from this era was mainly homophonic
meaning that the music had one part or melody that dominated all other parts or melodies (Kamien
160). Classical era music also really focused on; how graceful and beautiful the melody and the
form were, proportion and balance, moderation, and control. The music was... Show more content

While most composers worked for dignity, Beethoven did not feel the need to. He could
compose on his own time and sell a work when he needed or wanted money. Beethoven had the
honor of having an extensive influence. He earned his title as one of the greatest composers of his
time because of his ability to bridge the classic era of music to the romantic era of music. At the
start of his musical career, Beethoven was considered an exceptional pianist, not a great composer.
In 1798 Beethoven noticed that he had started to become deaf. He would spend the following
thirty years writing and composing music with major hearing loss. From his mid twenties to
about three months before his death, Beethoven did not stop composing and writing music.
Beethoven drew his musical inspiration from many sources. Beethoven also created the bridge
between the classical and romantic periods. Most of his work didn t completely fit into any one
period s characteristics. If you listen to Beethoven s compositions as he progressed as a
composer, they could be divided into three periods. The first is commonly known as his imitation
period, the period when he took the styles, mechanics, and techniques of other composers. He
mimicked; Bach, Haden, as well as Mozart. Next, he had the period of externalization, a time when
he developed his own style and reveled in it. Thirdly he

The Pros And Cons Of Downsizing
For the purpose of the research, we would narrow down our discussion on one of the elements of
the employee relations, which is downsizing. Downsizing, also known as restructuring and
rightsizing, is the planned elimination of jobs in an organization. It is essentially the reverse of a
company growing and suggests a one time change in the organization and the number of people
employed. (R.Wayne Mondy, Robert M.Noe, Shane R. Premeaux, Judy Bandy Mondy) So,
typically, downsizing will shrink both the organization and the number of people in the
organization. Downsizing does not always turn a company around. This is because downsizing does
not solve the fundamental causes of problems. (R.Wayne Mondy, Robert M.Noe, Shane R.
Premeaux, Judy Bandy Mondy) For instance, some organizations have not developed an appropriate
strategy for growth. They only focus on reducing costs, but not solving the problem that leads to the
downsizing decision. Besides, when one firm downsizes, others in the same industry must also
follow as they are competitive to each other. (R.Wayne Mondy, Robert M.Noe, Shane R. Premeaux,
Judy Bandy Mondy) Therefore, more and more individuals will become unemployed and the

employees feel a sense of obligation to their organizations, even if they are unhappy in their roles

of downsizing, the employees may see the organization as having behaved unjustly or unfairly and
will feel less secure even if they have a strong sense of obligation to stay. This is because they may
lose the belief that their contribution to the business will be rewarded in the future. So, downsizing
will lead to a negative impact on the organizational commitment of the

Myers Briggs Type Indicator Analysis
Myers Briggs Type Indicator The Myers Briggs personality test is based from the theorists, Carl
Jung and Isabel Briggs Myers. The eight letters E, I, S, N, T, F, J, P, are the personality traits
tested in this exam. Upon completion of the test, each person is given a four letter profile. These
profiles will consist of either an E or I, S or N, T or F, and J or P, depending on his or her
personality. E stands for extravert which means a person who is an extravert is usually more
outgoing and open than those who are not extraverts. The opposite of an extravert is an introvert,
represented with an I. Introverts tend to keep to themselves. They do not like to be the center of

A Data Driven Decision Making Platform Essay
In this dissertation, a data driven decision making platform is developed focusing on individuals
at high risk of getting breast and ovarian cancers due to their BRCA gene mutations. First a
likelihood estimation model is built based on a gradient boosting model. This model is capable
of identifying individuals at high risk of having BRCA mutations based on their family and
personal history of cancers. Then, a Markov decision process (MDP) model is formulated to help
BRCA mutation carriers and their health providers to find effective intervention actions (based on
cost or quality adjusted life years) to prevent breast and ovarian cancers. Finally, a robust MDP
(RMDP) model is presented to study the sensitivity of MDP optimal strategies under uncertainty. In
what follows, I present a summary of findings in Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of this dissertation.
In Chapter 2, four machine learning classifiers are used to find the likelihood of having BRCA
mutation based on detailed personal and family history of cancer information. The data used for
validation of the models emerges from a recent nation wide survey study (ABOUT) of those who
requested BRCA genetic testing through one of the commercial health insurance companies in the
United States. This is the first study evaluating existing well known BRCA risk estimation models
using data on general population in the United States. The models considered were gradient

The Seven Miracles Of Christ Essay
Introduction
Throughout the New Testament are recounts of the miracles that Jesus performed to give proof
that He was indeed the Son of God and the Messiah foretold of in the Old Testament. John chose to
recount only seven of the many miracles that Jesus performed. He felt that these seven, more than
any of the others, showed definitive proof that the Messiah, the Son of God, had come as promised.
The First Miracle John 2:1 11
The first of the seven miracles that John recounts is the turning of water into wine. John notes that
this miracle marks the beginning of Jesus signs to His disciples and the world. Jesus and his mother
are invited to a wedding during which the hosts run out of wine. When the servants come to Mary

Jesus initial response seems somewhat hard and insensitive to me, but as Laney notes He is
addressing the Jewish people in general and the fact that they have a need to see signs to justify
their faith. (Laney, 1992, p.102)
The nobleman asks Jesus again to come and save his son. Jesus tells the man that he can go home;
that his son will live. Now, what I find interesting is that the nobleman didn t even question Jesus or
continue begging him to come with him. The nobleman simply left to go home believing that what
Jesus had said was true. There is no mention anywhere in the Gospel of John of this man or how he
knew of Jesus. It makes sense to me that the nobleman must have witnessed one of Jesus thereby
reinforcing his faith in Him. The illness that afflicted the nobleman s son shows us how weak,
frail and mortal we are. Jesus healing of the man s son shows us that we can be healed of our sins
but only through Him are we saved. He shows that we can have eternal life through Him.
The Third Miracle John 5:1 18 When Jesus goes to Jerusalem He finds there a man who is lame,
an invalid. This man tells Jesus that he is unable to get to the pool by the sheep gate where the
waters can heal him. Jesus could tell that the man had been sick for a very long time; thirty eight
years according to John. So, He asked the man if he wanted to get well. Thinking

Examples Of Foreshadowing In The Demon Lover
Elizabeth Bowen/The Demon Lover From the moment that my pen touched paper, I have thought
of nothing but writing, and since then I have thought of practically nothing else.... [W]hen I have
nothing to write, I feel only half alive (British Literature 1228). This shows the passion that
Elizabeth Bowen had for writing. She had always dreamed of being a writer. Although she went
through some rough times, she always expressed her thoughts with her writing. Elizabeth Bowen
had and an unstable childhood that lacked parental love so when she wrote her stories they were
mainly about her past experiences such as the short storyThe Demon Lover.

Drover in the short story. Elizabeth also uses foreshadowing when Mrs. Drover is to scared to
look at the letter again. There it shows how Mrs. Drover feels as if there is an intruder or that the
person that wrote her the letter might return to treat her badly. A lot of the foreshadowing Elizabeth
shows throughout the short story is that Mrs. Drover feels a bad presence with her while she is
getting things that she needed (British Literature 171).
The flashback Shown in The Demon Lover is when she has the memory of meeting the soldier
and agreeing to marry him and giving a hint that Mrs. Drover thinks the letter came from him. She
also explains a flashback by how the soldier would treat her showing that she might had made a
promise to him that she didn t keep (British Literature 171).
Elizabeth Bowen uses ambiguity to create mystery to the story. As to how the letter arrived to
the house, who sent the letter, what promise Mrs.Drover made to her soldier fiance, and the
ending of the story all bring a thought of mystery when reading it. The promise that Mrs. Drover
could have made to the soldier could have been to always be true to him and not marry or that
she would die if he died. At the ending of the story it could have been the ghost of the dead soldier
or that she has gone crazy after the war (British Literature

Sixteen Years, Sixteen Days, and the Rest of my Life On August 12, 2014 I was watching TV in
the morning before heading over to my grandparents house for breakfast. The news was on with
a headline at the bottom of the screen which began with the word Ebola , but I could see was
bola. Every once in a while, a flash of the E would enter my vision, but it did not stay in there for
more than a second. Wondering what was going on I looked around the room, but nothing looked
out of place, the only problem with my vision was when I looked at the TV. After a short amount
of time this strange obstruction to my vision went away and as soon as my father and brother we
went over to my grandparents house. Every Tuesday, we would have... Show more content on

Our job for the day was to prune Fire Blight from some of the Ginger Gold apple trees. Just as I
walked up to the first tree, the pain in my head became unbearable. I told my father that it felt
like I was standing on top of my head. One option was to go to the Emergency Room, but I opted
to go to my regular doctor instead so my father made an appointment for me at ten o clock. When
my father called, he was instructed to give me some medicine to relieve my headache and to
have me drink some water. After taking some medicine and drinking some water, I went over to
my grandmother s office so she could keep an eye on my symptoms. Usually rest helps to relieve
my headaches so I laid my head down to rest, but doing so only made the pain worse. My father
stopped in the office to check on me before going back out to work when I told him that I could
not wait until ten o clock. We went to the ER, but before we left I began to feel nauseous. Once
we arrived at the ER we signed in and we were brought to a room where I was given some
medicine to relieve my nausea. A nurse came in who asked questions about how I was feeling or
what symptoms I had had and came to the conclusion that I had a migraine with aura, but just to
be safe she decided to do a CT scan. After the CT scan the nurse came back in to tell us that I had
a cyst in my brain, but that that was normal for children about my age. The nurse

The Root Cellar Poem Analysis
Deep into The Root Cellar
Numerous artists make exceptionally uncertain implications when composing poetry. To some the
understandings might be extremely energizing, while others consider them to be dull stories of a
creator s life. As uninteresting as it may be to a few, individuals can especially identify with
specific focuses being made in many types of poetry. In The Root Cellar , Roethke examines in
distinctive detail about the dim, moist, and rotten basement. The statements made are extremely
discouraging and the thought of needing to surrender appears to be real. He depicts how
everything stinks of rotting matter and how anything would not have the power to rest in such a
place. Despite the fact that all appears to be lost, there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the duration of his life, the greater part of the mental breakdowns he endured were really
helping him. This misery, which he thought of as snapshots of mindfulness, was put towards his
work. There were gigantic measures of misery and sadness in his written work. It appears, as there
is a dim tone to The Root Cellar specifically with hidden implications to a few things.
Despite the fact that the poem is loaded with life sucking symbolism, there is life to be found
inside it. Roethke continued going in his life, despite the fact that he had some unpleasant and
low focuses. In the poem, two lines truly emerge: Nothing would give up life. Even the dirt kept
breathing a small breath. The enormous factor a person would get from looking at this is that
nothing is sufficiently horrible to stop all together. Battle until the very end, something that one
should detract from this piece. Things in that basement were kicking the bucket, rotting, however
a few things strived ahead. The poem figures the dirt can be taken as an allegory to our own
lives as individuals. When somebody achieves a state of outrageous misery, they feel lower than
the soil. Since in the poem, the soil takes a breath, it tries to remain alive. The lowest form of item
in that cellar, has discovered a reason to go onward.
Roethke is viewed as a very open artist; a phrase used to name writers that depict their

Immanuel Kant And Karl Marx
In an effort to understand progress and its goal in humanity, philosophers Immanuel Kant and Karl
Marx each present their theories with Kant believing progress is made through the reform brought
on by antagonism and social instability in humanity which will ultimately lead to perpetual peace,
while Marx argues progress comes in the form of a worker s revolution and the adoption of true
communismthat will lead to utopia. These German thinkers seek to define the guiding the force
beneath humanity s constant state of evolution to understand where it is headed and advise towards
a goal they find ideal for humanity.
Through an analysis of human characteristics, Immanuel Kant concludes progress is driven by
humanity s innate behavior of contempt for one another, which he refers to as antagonism. In
Kant s essay On Universal History , his fourth thesis states, The means employed by Nature to
bring about the development of all the capacities of men is their antagonism in society, so far as
this is, in the end, the cause of a lawful order among men. By this, Kant means that man finds
himself in mutual opposition with his peers, but this opposition, as deemed by nature, is the force
driving mankind s development. According to Kant, man has a conflicting, natural tendency to
both associate and isolate himself from others. The former because society gives him the ability to
feel he is more developed than his individual capacities allow for, and the latter is a consequence

Determination And Self Determination
Self Determination
Motivation plays a big role in a person s life. It allows you to set goals and build confidence.
However, a person is not born motivated, it is something you must find within yourself to
achieve the things you want to achieve. My subject is a twenty one year old female college
soccer player. She has played soccer since she was five years old. She grew up with many
challenges on and off the field and has still found a way to keep herself moving forward. I
interviewed her about what motivates her and dealing with obstacles that pop up.
The subject has a strong sense of autonomy and competence, but due to low relatedness, her sense
of motivation has decreased. These also relate to her motivated behavior. There are two... Show

She tells herself that this is her opportunity to showcase herself to be better. When working under
high pressure, the subject continues to push forward because she knows the pain is temporary. Her
competence to push herself to accomplish the tasks is high.
Being an athlete, nutrition plays a major role in this person s program. When it comes to her body
weight, she regularly motivates herself to lose weight so she can be quicker and stronger to play
her position. This is where her autonomous motives help her see the value in her actions.
The interviewee s overall outcome is for her to reward herself by improving so she can earn more
playing time. Although her ultimate reward is starting in a game, she is happy just knowing she
always puts in great effort and gives it her all.
One obstacle the subject sometime faces is her confidence. When she is not motivated at a training
session, it frustrates her and she begins to temporarily lack motivation. This causes her to have
thoughts of making excuses to stop training. However, when the thought of making excuses
appears, she ignores them, finds the strength to push forward, and completes her tasks. Finishing
tasks in difficult circumstances reveals a strong intrinsic motivation on her part.
When it comes to feedback after a task, the interviewee is motivated in a different manner. She
completely disregards positive feedback, choosing to focus on critical comments for her mistakes.

Examples Of Friar Lawrence
In the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, I believe that Friar Lawrence is responsible for Juliet s and
Romeo s death. To begin, Friar Lawrence was the person who married Romeo and Juliet, hoping
that the feud between their families would end. Thy love did read by rote, that could not spell.
But come, young waverer, come go with me. In one respect I ll thy assistant be; for this alliance
may so happy prove to turn your households rancor to pure love. (Romeo and Juliet 2.3.96 100)

that there is hope in the situation they are dealing with. He is also saying that they can prevent
the execution by following his plan. As Juliet hears him, she decides that she would take the
potion as long as it can prevent Romeo from getting hurt or executed. Finally, Friar Lawrence
decided to write a letter informing Romeo what was going on. Instead of himself giving the

A Skin Disease Of Vitiligo
I am going to be discussing a skin disease called vitiligo. This skin disease occurs when one s
melanocytes, mature melanin forming cells, are ruined. Vitiligo is a disease that is not hard to
recognize and can be found at several spots on the body. The most common places to find this
disease would be on the hands, feet, around the mouth and eyes, and even around the genitalia. With
some skindiseases, melanocytes are destroyed, and the production of melanin, a dark brown to
black pigment that is found in the skin and is the reasoning for skin color, is simply just slowed
down. This results in hypopigmentation, which is the loss of skin color, but not a total loss. Other
skin diseases, such as vitiligo, have a complete absence of melanin. The depigmented skin color of
someone with this disease is similar to that of one who suffers from albinism.
The destruction of melanocytes can have three major causes in people with vitiligo. The first being
that a patient with vitiligo has inherited three of the vitiligo genes, which has caused their
melanocytes to destruct. The second being that the melanocytes themselves are different in a
patient with vitiligo in relation to those without vitiligo. Melanocytes of a vitiligo patient compared
to a person without vitiligo require a meticulous cultural condition and are more unstable around
certain chemicals. The cells can even die when exposed to such factors. Vitiligo genes are
prevented from acting in a normal fashion when they are

The Effects Of Atmospheric Conditioning On The Human Body
A Study of The Effects of Atmospheric Conditioning on Pilots and How They are Counteracted

IB Subject of Essay: Biology
Supervisor: Mr. Ward
Word Count: ___3125___
Abstract
This study determines the positive and negative effects of flight on the human body. Both the field
of Aeronautics, flight within the Earth s atmosphere, and Astronautics, flight outside of the Earth s
atmosphere, where referenced in the process of research to grasp an understanding of the
conditions of the jobs of Aerospace pilots. The research questions are: Are pilots in the aerospace
industry affected by their jobs overtime? What is the difference in conditions between commercial
pilots and jet pilots? What conditions do astronauts have to undergo? How does G Force affect the
human body? How does zero gravity affect the human body?
In order to investigate this idea much research was conducted on the conditions in which a pilot
would undergo as both an airplane pilot and a spacecraft pilot. The research was more so aimed
at how these conditions had an effect on the human body and why this was the case. In order to
come to an accurate conclusion I analyzed research from primary sources such as official
government websites, similar studies, interviews conducted personally with various types of pilots,
and personal hands on experiences of my own as a passenger in an aircraft.
Through very detailed research I concluded that there is much at risk over time as an individual

the of the many people that were living during the Holocaust period. The Holocaust which took
place in the late 1930 s and throughout the 1940 s Adolf Hitler an anti Jewish man came to power
in Germany. During this Germanywas in a great depression due to their loss of World War One.
Hitler promised restoration and power and he was easily accepted. Once Adolf was in power he
began to invade countries around them like Poland and Holland. Hitler began to send Jewsaway to
camps. He then began to rampage around the countries capturing the Jews and sending them to
the camps where we later found out how they brutally killed the Jews. Before some of the Jews
were captured, they went into hiding. That s where our two stories came from our first is The
Hiding Place and the other is The Annex. Although these are not the only stories about Jews
hiding from the Nazis these are some of the most extreme. While comparing Corrie and Anne
their personality, experience, and final outcomes we see that there are similarities and difference.
Anne and Corrie had many different and similar personality. Anna had a very young, and spunky
personality. She loved to talk and move around. Peter said, All right, Mrs. Quack Quack.

Importance of Louis Armstrong
Louis Armstrong
Louis Armstrong was the greatest of all Jazz musicians. Armstrong defined what it was to play
Jazz. His amazing technical abilities, the joy and spontaneity, and amazingly quick, inventive
musical mind still dominate Jazz to this day. Only Charlie Parker comes close to having as much
influence on the history of Jazz as Louis Armstrong did. Like almost all early Jazz musicians,
Louis was from New Orleans. He was from a very poor family and was sent to reform school
when he was twelve after firing a gun in the air on New Year s Eve. At the school he learned to
play cornet. After being released at age fourteen, he worked selling papers, unloading boats, and

most market share and has a strong customer brand loyalty. * To summarize, entry into the
smartphone industry is not HIGH but to sustain and compete against the major giants is close to

a different set of audience but most of the time overlapping audience. For e.g Apple targets high
end customers, Nokia targets the common and the sophisticated customers, RIM targets the
enterprise. But the consumer base keeps changing with the change in the dynamics of the
industry. For e.g most of the enterprise clients are shifting to Apple because of the innovative
design of the products offered. Highly Competitive market: The rivalry in the industry is
because of the major players already competing b/w each other. The major firms being Apple,
Samsung, RIM, Nokia PALM and HTC. Although each firm has their own strengths and
weaknesses which might be related to design of product or marketing or cost of handsets.
Competitive Margins: Because of a large number of key players in the phone industry and the cut
throat competition. Every firm is forced to keep the profit margins per sale low and hence attract
more customers. Also the economic crisis during 2008 2009 has made the companies lower their
pricing and thus improve sales. 3.) Negotiating Power of Buyers:

Epiphany In Hamlet
So I had an epiphany. Actually, that s not quite the right word. An epiphany is a moment of sudden
clarity, but mine was anything but sudden. It rolled in slowly and started to unfold itself, like it was
doing its morning stretch.
Yesterday, I was in London with my son. We decided to go ahead and catch the opening of Hamlet
,
at the Royal National Theatre. Written by William Shakespeare, the play illustrates the difficulties
we ll encounter in our lives. Shakespeare does this through the characters, soliloquies, and allusions
to the theme of madness. Whilst we were watching the play, my son whispered in my ear, claiming
that Hamlet reminded him of Tupac. At first I dismissed it as ridiculous, but then I thought about it.
Perhaps he was right. Are these two seemingly different people somewhat related?... Show more

Is Hamlet like Tupac? Tupac also saw this, and nothing proves this more than the song Changes.
In this song, Tupac shows the themes of appearance vs reality, revenge and morality. Like
Hamlet throughout the play, the song challenges the rules set by culture and works towards
justice. These show how hard life is to be an underprivileged Black man in the United States,
with a kindness on issues with police cruelty. This follows Hamlets theme of appearance vs
reality as from the outside it may look as though racism is no longer a factor as laws have
changed and the systemic oppression of minorities is no more. And I m sure as you may have
heard, we had a black president! Therefore everything is magically fixed. As the song develops,
Tupac makes simple as people sometimes wish it could be, and that people must get used to these
new environments. Similar to the motif of change seen in Hamlet. Tupac expresses how simple it
is for people to buy weapons and kill other people. How in times of change we result to fighting
and killing. Like Shakespeare, Tupac uses allusion to illustrate that madness is not a good way to

The And Political Foundation For Lay Participation
The historic and political foundation for lay participation in criminal jury trials is that it offers an
important check on judicial and political power exercised exclusively by the government. The jury
s role as a popular body for oversight of government becomes especially important when individual
citizens or groups have been accused of committing serious crimes against their own government.
After the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the passage of the 2001 Patriot Act in the United States and
similar anti terrorismmeasures imposed in other nations in the world, serious terrorism charges have
been brought against their citizens, political dissidents, and civic activists. In Australia, for
instance, after the passage of the Anti Terrorism Act in 2002, two separate juries examined charges
of terrorism. In Australia s first ever terrorism trial in 2005, the all citizen juryacquitted Zeky
Mallah, 21 year old supermarket worker, of terrorist charges of preparing to storm government
offices and shoot officers in a supposed suicide mission . In the second highly controversial trial,
in which the government s only evidence was the defendant s confession extracted at a Pakistani
military prison, the jury found Joseph Thomas guilty of charges for intentionally receiving funds
from al Qaeda. However, soon after the verdict, the appeal s court reversed all of his convictions
because it determined his coerced confession at a foreign prison to be inadmissible .

As many people know, the architects of many buildings have used a multitude of techniques and
methods from ancient architecture to build newer buildings. For example, the Capitol Building
uses Greek and Roman architecture in its columns, while the Washington Monument is in the style
of an Egyptian Obelisk. One of the monuments, the Lincoln Memorial, is based off the styles and
methods of the Architecture of the Parthenon. Because of this, there are many similarities, but also
differences, between the Parthenon and the Lincoln Memorial.
The architects of the Parthenon were Iktinos, Kallikrates, and Phidias. Although not much is known
about Iktinos and Kallikrates, other than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Born April 20th, 1850, French, before he was a sculptor, was a Lawyer and a Judge, among other
occupations. In Ancient Greece, the Greeks widely believed in Gods and Goddesses such as Zeus,
Poseidon, Aphrodite, and Athena. The patron Goddess of Athena was Athens, and the Athenians
believed that pleasing their patron Goddess would give them good luck and fortune. This may be
one of the reasons that Athena Parthenos and the Parthenon were built. Another believed reason
that the Parthenon was built was that the leader at the time, Pericles, wanted to show the power and
wealth of Athens. In comparison, the Lincoln Memorial was built to honor the 16th president,
Abraham Lincoln. One of the reasons that Bacon had for basing the memorial on the Parthenon was
to draw a parallel between the two governments What better way existed to remember a man who
struggled to defend democracy, than to model his tribute after one found in the birthplace of
democracy? (National Park Service). In terms of the monuments themselves, the Parthenon and the
Lincoln had many similarities and many differences. For instance, both of the monuments were
designed in the Greek temple style. They both hold Doric columns the Parthenon had 86, while the
Lincoln Memorial had 36 columns. Although there are many more columns in the Parthenon, the
Lincoln Memorial has much larger columns. Doric columns came from the Doric order, a style of
architecture that contains columns, a beam or

Grendel As A Hero Essay
The Old English epic Beowulf is the earliest recorded poem in Old English. The story is set in
Scandinavia with the antagonist Grendel. Gendel is a monster and an insensitive character.
Grendel was born into a monster and was cursed his entire life. Although Grendel was strong he
wasn t very brave because he only attacks at night when the guards are asleep. He has many
characteristics that a monster would have. First and foremost, he was raised to be evil, and never
had the chance to be good. Also whenever he would hear joy, he would be filled with anger and
hatred. Grendellikes killing people he doesn t feel any remorse after killing people. An example
from the story that shows this is Snatched up thirty men, smashed them unknowing in their beds
and out with their bodies (Genesis,pg 4). Talking about Grendel ties in with our next evil
antagonist known as Cain. Cain is the son of Adam and Eve. He was a farmer who was jealous of
his brother who was accepted by God and when Cain was rejected he decided to kill his brother
Abel. Unlike Grendel Cain believed in god he just didn t... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like how Grendel displays his envy towards people as Cain did to his brother Abel. Grendel is
described as a distant offspring to Cain. They both are also outcast to society and roam in the
darkness. Both Grendel and Cain were jealous. Grendel was jealous of the people who were
celebrating and being joyful and that jealousy made him kill many innocent people. Cain killed
Abel out of jealousy and was cast away. They both don t feel remorse after killing. An example
that showed that Cain didn t feel any remorse The man who killed his brother cares only for
himself. He doesn t express even the tiniest twinge of remorse, contrition, or repentance( Saxon,pg
42). Another similarity between Grendel and Cain would be selfishness. They both didn t have
concern for others didn t have no regard for others but murdering

Julius Caesar As A Source Criticism
In this essay I will be describing, discussing and evaluating my chosen source. I will be using the
references that I have chosen, in order to present a clear and concise source criticism, coming to a
well rounded conclusion at the end.
The source is taken from the book Commentarii de Bello Gallico , which was written and edited by
Aulus Hiritus and Julius Caesar and was published around 58 49 BC, sometime after Julius
Caesars death. It is a secondary source which describes Julius Caesar s first hand account of the
nine year period that he spent fighting the Celtic and Germanic people in Gaul. The book was
written in order to inform the Roman people of the Gallic Wars from a source that they trusted,
however it is biased meaning that Caesar may have had particular motives for writing it thus
meaning that the content may also be influenced by Caesars motives. Caesars chronology of
Commentarii de Bello Gallico allows for him to react to the shifts in Rome s political climate
(Timothy, R. Kimbrough, 2014, p. 3), which means that the source I have chosen to critique was
written to suit Caesars immediate needs (G. Woolf, 2011, p.54), suggesting that the portrayal of joy
that Caesar has been bestowed with could be exaggerated in order to fit the political climate in
Rome, allowing him to maintain his position within the Senate and with the Roman population.
The book contains information on the Gallic Wars and its purpose is to persuade the Roman people
that Caesars appointment in Gaul and his actions during the Wars occurred in order to benefit the
Roman state and the Roman people, regardless of the legality with which they were brought about
(Timothy. R. Kimbrough, 2014, p.8).
However, the source also suggests that Caesar was popular and was a worthy figure head for the
Roman Empire because he was prepared to face the unknown (H. Schadee, 2008, p.170), presenting
the his readers that he was then welcomed by the towns and their people connotes that he was
expressing his influence and power outside of Rome. The meaning of this source is that Caesar is
attempting to exert his reputation and power over the Senate by recounting his actions during the
Wars as for the benefit of the Roman empire, to the

Persuasive Essay On Why Zoos Are Bad For Animals
Zoos are bad for animals. Zoos are all around the world where people like to go to see animals many
people enjoy it, but are zoos really a good place? Zoos are not a healthy natural place for animals
to be kept. They are unhappy and they don t get to experience the natural life they were supposed
to live. Animals have families that the love and know just like humans do we re not put in cages
and separated from our families so why do we do it do animals. Zooare inhumane and ignorant to
animals in many ways they mistreat the animals.
When animals are taken from their natural habitat, they are placed in secluded cages where their
natural habitat is recreated, to the best of the zoo s abilities. However, certain aspects such as
ambient temperature in an animal s natural habitat cannot be recreated perfectly. Animals live
around the world for a reason, not to be taken away . The main reason is that their natural habitat is
associated with a particular climate and ecosystem is reliant upon all of the natural plants and
animals who also share that habitat. Nocturnal animals are those who sleep during the day and
forage during the night. When nocturnal animals are taken from their natural habitat and placed
inside of a zoo, with standard day time operating hours, it can be incredibly difficult for the ... Show

Frequent deployments and changing times created a distraction in the Professional aspect of the
Army. The distraction created a deficiency in maintaining the highest standards of the Profession
of Arms. In an effort to refine their understanding of the Army Profession, the Secretary of the
Army and the Army Chief of Staff directed that a review of the Army Profession be conducted,
thus the creation of the Profession of Arms Campaign. The Profession of Arms Campaign
jumpstarted with An Army White Paper, The Profession of Arms . The white paper is used as a
catalyst for the professional discourse we want to have about our profession. The Army White
Paper is an article which discussed the following topics as it relates to the Profession of Arms;
The Army as a Profession of Arms, The Army s Professional Culture, the Army Ethic, The Army
Ethic and External Relations, and Adapting the Army as Profession of Arms after a Decade of
War. (retrieved from Youtube.com) The second proponent in carrying out functions related to the

Apush Essay -- in What Ways and to What Extent Was...
In the early 1800s, America changed in a lot of ways in a short amount of time. The change that
occurred was, for the most part, the result of the industrial development. The industrial
advancements in the early 1800s had a huge amount of consequences, both positive and negative.
But the industrial development from 1800 to 1860 affected the North and the South in hugely
different ways. The prominent differences eventually caused an amazing amount of tension
between the two regions as they moved in completely separate directions. Mainly, the North and the
South differentiated when it came to cultures, economies, and political views. With the dawn of the
19th century, there were three revolutions that completely altered the United States.... Show more

Though the majority of Southerners didn t own slaves, slaves were used in the South to keep the
revenue up, and slavery was very much a part of the agricultural lifestyle. Political tension between
the North and the South started early when there was disagreement over Henry Clay s American
System. The American System imposed tariffs to support northern manufacturing, federally funded
roads and canals, and supported the National Bank. Northerners were in support of the American
System but the South wasn t on board with the plan. This protective tariff was a tax on imports, and
since the South was receiving most of the imported goods, they got the brunt of the tariff. The
South believed it was unfair that it was putting money into the North s industrial economy when the
South was barely making enough revenue to support itself. While the South provided the Northern
industries with most of the raw materials they needed, the price the North paid for these things were
nothing compared to what the South had to pay for the manufactured goods the North produced.
The opposition to the American System was so strong that South Carolina declared the tariffs void
and threatened to leave the Union. But Andrew Jackson worked with South Carolina and the Union
remained whole. This was the Nullification Crisis of 1832. The two regions clashed politically too.
While the North became generally

Essay On Mexican Drug War
The war on drugs is a serious issue in today s society. One of the main places that has to endure
this is Mexico. All around Mexico s states, there are constant drug wars among different powerful
cartels and drug lords. Due to these organizations, there are many instances of violence and needless
deaths. There are many different druglords, and they have caused many issues throughout Mexico.
The Mexican government has been fighting a war with drug traffickers since December 2006. At
the time, drug cartels have fought each country for control of territory. ( Mexico Drug War ) Many
people in Mexico are unwilling to wait so instead, in communities all across the country, groups of
men have donned masks, picked up rifles and machetes, and begun patrolling their neighborhoods
and farmlands. Many Mexican have lost their faith in the government of willing to protect them.
(Foreign Affairs Vol.92) More than 60,000 people have been killed from 2006 to 2012 due to the
drug war violence, but when Enrique Pena Nieto assumed the presidency, intentional homicide
numbers have declined slightly, but the number of kidnappings continues to rise. Ninety percent of

The bottom line for our team however, is to understand that the widespread practice of wasta in
the Middle East is assumed, it is a given. So we must learn the nuances of the practice and use it
to our advantage to be successful in our mission. That means finding the right Wasta to curry
influence with the particular elders you are working with. Originally based upon family loyalty,
the family is still the primary wasta channel, but that familial relationship has expanded to
include friends and acquaintances, as well as private agreements whereby services are provided
in exchange for gifts or specific fees. In the words of one observer, Today s wasta is too often a
middle man, seeking fame and fortune by doing favors. Our job is to find that Middle Man and
enter into that relationship with our eyes wide open, knowing it isn t going to be a cheap date,
but that it will be worth the lives it will save down the road. Incidentally, the IMF, World Bank
and regional economic leaders consider the taming or conversion of wasta as necessary to the
MENA Region ultimately becoming an emerging market leader and engine of world growth, its
effect in the regional economy is that debilitating. So let s do our part to keep it that way! Where s

Why We Need Healthcare Reform in America Essay
The American Healthcare industry is in dire need of repair. Not only is it in need or repair, the
American public needs to know why and what exactly it is that needs to be repaired. Most
Americans who have healthcare coverage don t know or understand what their coverage entails. On
November 8, 2009, the house passed H.R. 3962, which establishes standards for healthcare and
health insurance, as well as a government provided public option for those who can t afford

60 percent from 2003. (Schoen) This means that, all over the nation, there are more underinsured
than unemployed. 25 million people in 2007 means that 12 out of every 100 people in this
country are potentially unable to find the medical treatment they may require. It s not just those
who are out of work that, for whatever reason, do not have adequate health coverage. Many small
businesses can t afford to supply coverage to their employees, and larger corporations are moving

Patients in the United States pay more for less with the current healthcare system. They spend more
money on less care than any other developed nation. Not only are they paying for less care, they are
paying more money for a lower standard than every other industrialized nation. Every country has a
different system of healthcare, most of which are better than the current system used by the United

Standing majestically among these fantastic creatures is the unicorn. The unicorn is a unique magical creature, because while many magical creatures have not been able to maintain their popularity and overall depiction through time periods and across various cultures, the unicorn has; despite its diverse physical descriptions. The diverse physical descriptions of the unicorn can be seen in two panels of the The Garden of Earthly Delights (Hieronymous Bosch). Three unicorns appear on the left panel of the painting. Natural gas emits 50 to 60 % less greenhouse gas. Considering only tailpipe emissions, natural gas additionally emits 15 to 20 % less heat trapping gases than oil when burned in today s typical vehicle Emissions from smokestacks and tailpipes, however, don t tell the complete story. The drilling and extraction of natural gas from wells and its transportation in pipelines, ends up in the leakage of methane, a way more potent global warming gas than carbon dioxide. Preliminary studies and field measurements show that these questionable fugitive methane emissions vary from 1 to 9 % of total life cycle emissions. Whether natural gas has lower life cycle greenhouse gas emissions than oil depends on the assumed leakage rate, the global warming potential of methane over different time frames, the energy conversion efficiency, and different factors Cleaner burning than different fossil fuels, the combustion of natural gas produces negligible amounts of sulfur, mercury, and particulates. Burning natural gas will manufacture nitrogen oxides, that are precursors to smog, however at lower levels than oil and diesel used for motorcars. However, despite these advantages, unconventional gas development will have an effect on native and regional air quality. • 6. St Louis Brass Concert Report This past Thursday, I attended the fourth event in the Presidential concert series. The guest musicians were the wonderful quintet, Saint Louis Brass. They articulately play each note to create a melodious combination with their two trumpets, french horn, trombone, and tuba. During their set, they played a variety of antiqued classics, modern edgy pieces, and smooth jazz. Saint Louis Brass began their set with a harmonious, traditional 1600s tune. I was amazed at how well all the sounds from the brass instruments melded together. Before hand, when I thought of brass instruments, especially trumpets, I thought of the sharp notes often played in jazz; however, the smooth sounds from the five instruments infiltrated the room, completely filling my body with a calm peace. The musicians sat, fully engaged in the musicthat buzzed from their lips. I really enjoy this antiquated piece of music far more than I anticipated. The story follows Andrew (Ender) Wiggin, a genius boy who is chosen to attend Battle School in hopes of being the savior of humanity against the alien buggers. Ender s journey from an outcast into a commander seems to follow the steps of Joseph Campbell s hero s journey. Joseph Campbell was a writer who discovered after studying stories, religions, and mythologies, noticed similar themes and structures and wrote The Hero With A Thousand Faces (later renamed the hero s journey ). The second stage of a hero s journey is the call to adventure. Something happens that calls the hero away from their everyday life and into their quest. • 8. An Allegory In George Orwell s Animal Farm An allegory is a story or poem that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden message, typically involving politics. A great example of an allegory is George Orwell s, Animal Farm. When just looking at this story, one would think it was just about animals that ran off their owners and then formed their own lifestyle with an animal leader. On the contrary, if one was to pay attention to the story they would notice that it is pointing the reader to a time in history. Orwell wrote the story around 1944 in reference to the Russian Revolution and to slander the Soviet Union. Throughout the novella, the reader is introduced to the vital characters and is able to connect them to men in history. For example, Old Major the pig was a symbol of Karl Marx. One can see this through the personality and Old Major and also through him telling of his dream. In the beginning of the novel, Major has a dream where all animals were equal. He told the other animals that they did not have to have short lives that were dominated by labor and hunger for the human s sake. Old Major asked during the giving of his dream if it was not crystal clear, comrades, that all the evils of this life of ours spring from the tyranny of human beings? The dream was used to shadow Karl Marx s Communist Manifesto where Marx presented the evils of feudalism, capitalism, and the ideal world of communismto inspire the Russian Revolution. • 10. The Characterization Of Benjamin Braddock In The Graduate The characterization of Benjamin Braddock is apparent through the main focus of the 1967 coming of age film, The Graduate. The point of view, cinematography, score and less so the dialog gives the audience a detailed look into not only who Benjamin is as a person, but also the challenges he faces throughout the film. The film focuses on the perspective of Ben himself, never really giving the audiencea chance to watch much else of anything, really. Occasionally, the camera angle is intended to be from his perspective, in the case of through the scuba mask or while watching Elaine. This further emphasizes the focuson what Ben as an individual is doing and seeing. While the perspective definitely emphasizes what the audience should be focusing on, they aren t given much of a chance to focus on anything else. The entire film is so strictly set on Ben, and all other characters as individuals are focused on so little, that the audience can t really decide what to pay attention to, but rather are told what to. The cinematography plays a large role in characterizing Benjamin, potentially more so than anything else. The credit scene show Ben on a moving walkway in an airport with people moving all around him while The Sound of Silence plays over the expected noises of LAX airport. One of the pitfalls of change within an organization is employees fear of what change will bring. Will implementing new technologies destroy my job? Will I be able to keep up with the changes in my organization? These are some of the questions that bring about employee apprehension to changes in business. This very apprehension can determine the success or the failure of change within that system. Yet change is inevitable. Beethoven was also known for creating the bridge between the classical and romantic era of music. He is known for doing this because he took key aspects of the classical era and merged them with key aspects of the romantic era. The classical era of musicdates from 1775 1825. The classical musicera had a lighter and more clear texture (Kamien 161). The music from this era was mainly homophonic meaning that the music had one part or melody that dominated all other parts or melodies (Kamien 160). Beethoven had the honor of having an extensive influence. He earned his title as one of the greatest composers of his time because of his ability to bridge the classic era of music to the romantic era of music. At the start of his musical career, Beethoven was considered an exceptional pianist, not a great composer. In 1798 Beethoven noticed that he had started to become deaf. He would spend the following thirty years writing and composing music with major hearing loss. From his mid twenties to about three months before his death, Beethoven did not stop composing and writing music. Beethoven drew his musical inspiration from many sources. Beethoven also created the bridge between the classical and romantic periods. Most of his work didn t completely fit into any one period s characteristics. If you listen to Beethoven s compositions as he progressed as a composer, they could be divided into three periods. The first is commonly known as his imitation period, the period when he took the styles, mechanics, and techniques of other composers. He mimicked; Bach, Haden, as well as Mozart. • 13. The Pros And Cons Of Downsizing For the purpose of the research, we would narrow down our discussion on one of the elements of the employee relations, which is downsizing. Downsizing, also known as restructuring and rightsizing, is the planned elimination of jobs in an organization. It is essentially the reverse of a company growing and suggests a one time change in the organization and the number of people employed. (R.Wayne Mondy, Robert M.Noe, Shane R. Premeaux, Judy Bandy Mondy) So, typically, downsizing will shrink both the organization and the number of people in the organization. Downsizing does not always turn a company around. This is because downsizing does not solve the fundamental causes of problems. (R.Wayne Mondy, Robert M.Noe, Shane R. Premeaux, Judy Bandy Mondy) For instance, some organizations have not developed an appropriate strategy for growth. They only focus on reducing costs, but not solving the problem that leads to the downsizing decision. Besides, when one firm downsizes, others in the same industry must also follow as they are competitive to each other. (R.Wayne Mondy, Robert M.Noe, Shane R. A Data Driven Decision Making Platform Essay In this dissertation, a data driven decision making platform is developed focusing on individuals at high risk of getting breast and ovarian cancers due to their BRCA gene mutations. First a likelihood estimation model is built based on a gradient boosting model. This model is capable of identifying individuals at high risk of having BRCA mutations based on their family and personal history of cancers. Then, a Markov decision process (MDP) model is formulated to help BRCA mutation carriers and their health providers to find effective intervention actions (based on cost or quality adjusted life years) to prevent breast and ovarian cancers. Finally, a robust MDP (RMDP) model is presented to study the sensitivity of MDP optimal strategies under uncertainty. In what follows, I present a summary of findings in Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of this dissertation. In Chapter 2, four machine learning classifiers are used to find the likelihood of having BRCA mutation based on detailed personal and family history of cancer information. The data used for validation of the models emerges from a recent nation wide survey study (ABOUT) of those who requested BRCA genetic testing through one of the commercial health insurance companies in the United States. This is the first study evaluating existing well known BRCA risk estimation models using data on general population in the United States. (Laney, 1992, p.102) The nobleman asks Jesus again to come and save his son. Jesus tells the man that he can go home; that his son will live. Now, what I find interesting is that the nobleman didn t even question Jesus or continue begging him to come with him. The nobleman simply left to go home believing that what Jesus had said was true. There is no mention anywhere in the Gospel of John of this man or how he knew of Jesus. It makes sense to me that the nobleman must have witnessed one of Jesus thereby reinforcing his faith in Him. The illness that afflicted the nobleman s son shows us how weak, frail and mortal we are. Jesus healing of the man s son shows us that we can be healed of our sins but only through Him are we saved. He shows that we can have eternal life through Him. The Third Miracle John 5:1 18 When Jesus goes to Jerusalem He finds there a man who is lame, an invalid. The flashback Shown in The Demon Lover is when she has the memory of meeting the soldier and agreeing to marry him and giving a hint that Mrs. Drover thinks the letter came from him. She also explains a flashback by how the soldier would treat her showing that she might had made a promise to him that she didn t keep (British Literature 171). Elizabeth Bowen uses ambiguity to create mystery to the story. As to how the letter arrived to the house, who sent the letter, what promise Mrs.Drover made to her soldier fiance, and the ending of the story all bring a thought of mystery when reading it. The promise that Mrs. Drover could have made to the soldier could have been to always be true to him and not marry or that she would die if he died. At the ending of the story it could have been the ghost of the dead soldier or that she has gone crazy after the war (British Literature ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Every once in a while, a flash of the E would enter my vision, but it did not stay in there for more than a second. Wondering what was going on I looked around the room, but nothing looked out of place, the only problem with my vision was when I looked at the TV. After taking some medicine and drinking some water, I went over to my grandmother s office so she could keep an eye on my symptoms. My father stopped in the office to check on me before going back out to work when I told him that I could not wait until ten o clock. We went to the ER, but before we left I began to feel nauseous. Once we arrived at the ER we signed in and we were brought to a room where I was given some medicine to relieve my nausea. A nurse came in who asked questions about how I was feeling or what symptoms I had had and came to the conclusion that I had a migraine with aura, but just to be safe she decided to do a CT scan. To some the understandings might be extremely energizing, while others consider them to be dull stories of a creator s life. As uninteresting as it may be to a few, individuals can especially identify with specific focuses being made in many types of poetry. In The Root Cellar , Roethke examines in distinctive detail about the dim, moist, and rotten basement. The statements made are extremely discouraging and the thought of needing to surrender appears to be real. He depicts how everything stinks of rotting matter and how anything would not have the power to rest in such a place. Despite the fact that all appears to be lost, there ... This misery, which he thought of as snapshots of mindfulness, was put towards his work. There were gigantic measures of misery and sadness in his written work. It appears, as there is a dim tone to The Root Cellar specifically with hidden implications to a few things. Despite the fact that the poem is loaded with life sucking symbolism, there is life to be found inside it. Roethke continued going in his life, despite the fact that he had some unpleasant and low focuses. In the poem, two lines truly emerge: Nothing would give up life. Even the dirt kept breathing a small breath. The enormous factor a person would get from looking at this is that nothing is sufficiently horrible to stop all together. Battle until the very end, something that one should detract from this piece. Things in that basement were kicking the bucket, rotting, however a few things strived ahead. The poem figures the dirt can be taken as an allegory to our own lives as individuals. When somebody achieves a state of outrageous misery, they feel lower than the soil. Since in the poem, the soil takes a breath, it tries to remain alive. The lowest form of item in that cellar, has discovered a reason to go onward. • 23. Immanuel Kant And Karl Marx In an effort to understand progress and its goal in humanity, philosophers Immanuel Kant and Karl Marx each present their theories with Kant believing progress is made through the reform brought on by antagonism and social instability in humanity which will ultimately lead to perpetual peace, while Marx argues progress comes in the form of a worker s revolution and the adoption of true communismthat will lead to utopia. These German thinkers seek to define the guiding the force beneath humanity s constant state of evolution to understand where it is headed and advise towards a goal they find ideal for humanity. Through an analysis of human characteristics, Immanuel Kant concludes progress is driven by humanity s innate behavior of contempt for one another, which he refers to as antagonism. In Kant s essay On Universal History , his fourth thesis states, The means employed by Nature to bring about the development of all the capacities of men is their antagonism in society, so far as this is, in the end, the cause of a lawful order among men. By this, Kant means that man finds himself in mutual opposition with his peers, but this opposition, as deemed by nature, is the force driving mankind s development. According to Kant, man has a conflicting, natural tendency to both associate and isolate himself from others. The former because society gives him the ability to feel he is more developed than his individual capacities allow for, and the latter is a consequence of his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. A Skin Disease Of Vitiligo I am going to be discussing a skin disease called vitiligo. This skin disease occurs when one s melanocytes, mature melanin forming cells, are ruined. Vitiligo is a disease that is not hard to recognize and can be found at several spots on the body. The most common places to find this disease would be on the hands, feet, around the mouth and eyes, and even around the genitalia. With some skindiseases, melanocytes are destroyed, and the production of melanin, a dark brown to black pigment that is found in the skin and is the reasoning for skin color, is simply just slowed down. This results in hypopigmentation, which is the loss of skin color, but not a total loss. Other skin diseases, such as vitiligo, have a complete absence of melanin. The depigmented skin color of someone with this disease is similar to that of one who suffers from albinism. The destruction of melanocytes can have three major causes in people with vitiligo. The first being that a patient with vitiligo has inherited three of the vitiligo genes, which has caused their melanocytes to destruct. The second being that the melanocytes themselves are different in a patient with vitiligo in relation to those without vitiligo. Melanocytes of a vitiligo patient compared to a person without vitiligo require a meticulous cultural condition and are more unstable around certain chemicals. The cells can even die when exposed to such factors. Vitiligo genes are prevented from acting in a normal fashion when they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Shakespeare does this through the characters, soliloquies, and allusions to the theme of madness. • 40. Essay on Parthenon and Lincoln Memorial Adam 1 Jean Luc Adam Mr. Viarengo Period 6 29 October 2012 As many people know, the architects of many buildings have used a multitude of techniques and methods from ancient architecture to build newer buildings. For example, the Capitol Building uses Greek and Roman architecture in its columns, while the Washington Monument is in the style of an Egyptian Obelisk. One of the monuments, the Lincoln Memorial, is based off the styles and methods of the Architecture of the Parthenon. Because of this, there are many similarities, but also differences, between the Parthenon and the Lincoln Memorial. The architects of the Parthenon were Iktinos, Kallikrates, and Phidias. Born April 20th, 1850, French, before he was a sculptor, was a Lawyer and a Judge, among other occupations. In Ancient Greece, the Greeks widely believed in Gods and Goddesses such as Zeus, Poseidon, Aphrodite, and Athena. The patron Goddess of Athena was Athens, and the Athenians believed that pleasing their patron Goddess would give them good luck and fortune. This may be one of the reasons that Athena Parthenos and the Parthenon were built. Another believed reason that the Parthenon was built was that the leader at the time, Pericles, wanted to show the power and wealth of Athens. In comparison, the Lincoln Memorial was built to honor the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. One of the reasons that Bacon had for basing the memorial on the Parthenon was to draw a parallel between the two governments What better way existed to remember a man who struggled to defend democracy, than to model his tribute after one found in the birthplace of democracy? (National Park Service). In terms of the monuments themselves, the Parthenon and the Lincoln had many similarities and many differences. For instance, both of the monuments were designed in the Greek temple style. They both hold Doric columns the Parthenon had 86, while the Lincoln Memorial had 36 columns. Although there are many more columns in the Parthenon, the Lincoln Memorial has much larger columns. Gendel is a monster and an insensitive character. Grendel was born into a monster and was cursed his entire life. Although Grendel was strong he wasn t very brave because he only attacks at night when the guards are asleep. He has many characteristics that a monster would have. • 42. Julius Caesar As A Source Criticism In this essay I will be describing, discussing and evaluating my chosen source. I will be using the references that I have chosen, in order to present a clear and concise source criticism, coming to a well rounded conclusion at the end. The source is taken from the book Commentarii de Bello Gallico , which was written and edited by Aulus Hiritus and Julius Caesar and was published around 58 49 BC, sometime after Julius Caesars death. It is a secondary source which describes Julius Caesar s first hand account of the nine year period that he spent fighting the Celtic and Germanic people in Gaul. The book was written in order to inform the Roman people of the Gallic Wars from a source that they trusted, however it is biased meaning that Caesar may have had particular motives for writing it thus meaning that the content may also be influenced by Caesars motives. Caesars chronology of Commentarii de Bello Gallico allows for him to react to the shifts in Rome s political climate (Timothy, R. Kimbrough, 2014, p. 3), which means that the source I have chosen to critique was written to suit Caesars immediate needs (G. Woolf, 2011, p.54), suggesting that the portrayal of joy that Caesar has been bestowed with could be exaggerated in order to fit the political climate in Rome, allowing him to maintain his position within the Senate and with the Roman population. The book contains information on the Gallic Wars and its purpose is to persuade the Roman people that Caesars appointment in Gaul and his actions during the Wars occurred in order to benefit the Roman state and the Roman people, regardless of the legality with which they were brought about (Timothy. R. Kimbrough, 2014, p.8). However, the source also suggests that Caesar was popular and was a worthy figure head for the Roman Empire because he was prepared to face the unknown (H. Schadee, 2008, p.170), presenting the his readers that he was then welcomed by the towns and their people connotes that he was expressing his influence and power outside of Rome. The meaning of this source is that Caesar is attempting to exert his reputation and power over the Senate by recounting his actions during the Wars as for the benefit of the Roman empire, to the ... The industrial advancements in the early 1800s had a huge amount of consequences, both positive and negative. But the industrial development from 1800 to 1860 affected the North and the South in hugely different ways. The prominent differences eventually caused an amazing amount of tension between the two regions as they moved in completely separate directions. Mainly, the North and the South differentiated when it came to cultures, economies, and political views. Though the majority of Southerners didn t own slaves, slaves were used in the South to keep the revenue up, and slavery was very much a part of the agricultural lifestyle. Political tension between the North and the South started early when there was disagreement over Henry Clay s American System. The American System imposed tariffs to support northern manufacturing, federally funded roads and canals, and supported the National Bank. Northerners were in support of the American System but the South wasn t on board with the plan. This protective tariff was a tax on imports, and since the South was receiving most of the imported goods, they got the brunt of the tariff. The South believed it was unfair that it was putting money into the North s industrial economy when the South was barely making enough revenue to support itself. While the South provided the Northern industries with most of the raw materials they needed, the price the North paid for these things were nothing compared to what the South had to pay for the manufactured goods the North produced. The opposition to the American System was so strong that South Carolina declared the tariffs void and threatened to leave the Union. But Andrew Jackson worked with South Carolina and the Union remained whole. This was the Nullification Crisis of 1832. The two regions clashed politically too. While the North became generally ...
