Snapping hip syndrome is a condition characterized by a snapping sensation in the hip joint caused by tendons or muscles rubbing against the pelvic bone. It most commonly affects young athletes and women engaged in repetitive twisting motions. The three main types are iliotibial band snap, iliopsoas tendon snap, and hip labral tear. Treatment focuses on stretching muscles, strengthening hips, anti-inflammatory medications, and surgery as a last resort.

 Common age group is 15 through 40
 Commonly affects women more than men
 Sports that have repetition motion of
twisting, such as dance and gymnast

4.  Iliotibial Snap
 Most common
 Snaps over the great trochanter
 Iliopsoas Tendon Snap
 Iliopsoas is the primary hip flexor
 Catches on any bony prominence of the pelvis
causing the hip to snap when the hip is flexed
 Hip Labral Tear
 Least common is a tear of the cartilage within
the hip
 Causes a very unsteady feeling

5.  Often a snap or clicking noise when the hip is
extend or flex
 uncomfortable and produces little pain
 For many patient the biggest complain is
annoyance
 Patients may develop trochanteric bursitis,
which will increase pain

6.  X-ray is usually confirm to make sure there
is no bony problem with the hip joint
 If snapping hip syndrome is thought to be
cause by tear of cartilage, a MRI will be
taken

7.  Use anti-inflammatory medication or
cortisone injection to help control the
inflammation
 Deep massage on the outside of the thigh
and buttocks muscles
 Physical therapy may be useful for stretching
out the muscles and tendons
 Surgery can also be done to stretch out the
iliospsoas tendon, but should be noted that
surgery is a last option

8.  Any type of cold modalities to help with the
inflammation such as Cold pack, ice
massage, and even a homemade ice pack
 US, phonoporis, ES, and iontophoris can also
be use to help with the pain and to warm up
the muscles for better stretching.

9.  Quadriceps stretch
 Hamstring stretch
 Piriformis stretch
 Iliotibial band stretch
 Standing/side-leaning
 Gluteal strengthening
 Hip abduction/adduction

10.  Balanced stretching routine
 Stretch both adductors and abductors
muscles
 Limit repetitive rotation
