As threats are increasingly more sophisticated and targeted, traditional anti-virus detection is struggling to keep up. The traditional approach focuses on using fingerprint signatures of known malware to identify malware in the enterprise. This method of fingerprinting for detection is not only easily evaded, but it provides limited value to detecting targeted attacks against companies and emerging threats.
To combat this problem, Invincea developed a novel method for detecting and analyzing previously unknown malware and 0-day exploits. The advanced detection approach runs in conjunction with Invincea’s secure virtual container, which is used to isolate the operating system and user data from exploits against vulnerable applications. By running high-risk apps like web browsers in a secure container, no prior knowledge, including signatures and IOCs of threats is required in order to prevent their damage to the system and loss of data.
This presentation talk about some of the challenges in detecting advanced malware which uses evasion techniques such as inline assembly or previously unknown approaches. The presentation also focuses on leveraging the static code analysis as an opportunity to detect these evasive malware in the sandbox

Android is a Linux based operating system used for smart phone devices. Since 2008, Android devices gained huge market share due to its open architecture and popularity. Increased popularity of the Android devices and associated primary benefits attracted the malware developers. Rate of Android malware applications increased between 2008 and 2016. In this paper, we proposed dynamic malware detection approach for Android applications. In dynamic analysis, system calls are recorded to calculate the density of the system calls. For density calculation, we used two different lengths of system calls that are 3 gram and 5 gram. Furthermore, Naive Bayes algorithm is applied to classify applications as benign or malicious. The proposed algorithm detects malware using 100 real world samples of benign and malware applications. We observe that proposed method gives effective and accurate results. The 3 gram Naive Bayes algorithm detects 84 malware application correctly and 14 benign application incorrectly. The 5 gram Naive Bayes algorithm detects 88 malware application correctly and 10 benign application incorrectly. Malware is a nuisance for smartphone users. The impact is detrimental to smartphone users if the smartphone is infected by malware. Malware identification is not an easy process for ordinary users due to its deeply concealed dangers in application package kit (APK) files available in the Android Play Store. In this paper, the challenges of creating malware datasets are discussed. Long before a malware classification process and model can be built, the need for datasets with representative features for most types of malwares has to be addressed systematically. Only after a quality data set is available can a quality classification model be obtained using machine learning (ML) or deep learning (DL) algorithms. The entire malware classification process is a full pipeline process and sub processes. The authors purposefully focus on the process of building quality malware datasets, not on ML itself, because implementing ML requires another effort after the reliable dataset is fully built. The overall step in creating the malware dataset starts with the extraction of the Android Manifest from the APK file set and ends with the labeling method for all the extracted APK files. The key contribution of this paper is on how to generate datasets systematically from any APK file.

The Internet of things (IoT) devices come in various operating form factors. Some are operated on unconstrained resources by directly connecting to the electrical grid with Cloud Compute driven memory and processing capacities; others, operated on constrained resources by connecting to finite battery sources and limited memory and compute. Whatever the form factors are, importantly, the expectations from consumers are the IoT devices must be secured – both in terms of data and in terms of safety and efficiency.
For securing IoT devices with unconstrained resources, there are many tools and compute technologies are available. On the other hand, Securing IoT devices with constrained resources, the options are few and pose huge challenges in terms of price, performance, and service costs. In this research paper, we propose machine learning enabled cognitive secure shield that secures the Dairy IoT devices operating under constrained resources. Our innovation is in the design of Secure shield framework that enhances security posture of our Dairy IoT device without affecting Useful Life of the device (ULD). Finally, the paper presents Secure shield ML prototyping.
