Definitio
nA future tense is a verb form that generally marks the
event described by the verb as not having happened
yet, but expected to happen in the future.
SimpleFuture Tense
• Simple Future hastwo different formsin
English: "will" and "be goingto."
• Although the two forms cansometimes be
used interchangeably, they often expresstwo
very different meanings.
• Both "will" and "be going to" refer to a
specific time in thefuture.
Thestructure of the simple futuretense
subject + auxiliary verb
will

For negative sentences in the simple future
tense, we insert not between the auxiliaryverb
and main verb.
For question sentences, we exchange the subject
and auxiliaryverb.

USE1 : "Will" to Expressa Voluntary
Action
• "Will" often suggeststhat aspeaker will do
something voluntarily. Avoluntary actionis
one the speaker offers to do for someone
else.
• Often, we use"will" to respond to someone
else's complaint or request forhelp.
• We also use"will" when we request that
someone help usor volunteer to do
something for us. Similarly, we use"will not"
or "won't" when we refuse to voluntarily do

USE2 : "Will" to ExpressaPromise
"Will" is usually used inpromises.
Examples:
• I will callyou when Iarrive.
• If I am elected President of the United States, I
will makesure everyone hasaccessto
inexpensive health insurance.
• I promise I will not tell him about the surprise
party.
• Don't worry, I'll becareful.
• I won't tell anyone yoursecret.
USE3 "Begoingto" to Expressa Plan
• "Be going to" expressesthat something isa
plan.
• It expressesthe idea thataperson intends to
do something in thefuture.
• It does not matter whether the plan is realistic
or not.
Examples:
• Heisgoingto spendhis vacation in Hawaii.
• Sheisnot goingto spendher vacation in Hawaii.
• A: When are we goingto meet eachother tonight?
B:We are goingto meet at 6 PM.
• I'm goingto bean actor when I grow up.
• Michelle isgoingto beginmedical school next year.
• Theyare goingto drive all the way to Alaska.
• Who are you goingto invite to the party?
• A: Who isgoingto makeJohn's birthday cake?
B:Sueisgoingto makeJohn's birthday cake.
USE4 "Will" or "BeGoingto" to Expressa
Prediction
• Both "will" and "be going to"can expressthe
idea of ageneral prediction about thefuture.
• Predictions are guessesabout whatmight
happen in the future.
• In "prediction" sentences, the subject usually
haslittle control over the futureand therefore
USES1-3 do not apply.
• In the following examples, there isno
difference in meaning.
Examples:
• Theyear 2222 will beavery interesting year.
Theyear 2222 isgoingto beavery interesting
year.
• JohnSmith will bethe next President.
JohnSmith isgoingto bethe next President.
• Themovie "Zenith" will win severalAcademy
Awards.
Themovie "Zenith" isgoingto win several
AcademyAwards.
IMPORTANT
• In the Simple Future, itis not always clear
which USEthe speaker hasinmind.
• Often, there is more than one way tointerpret
asentence's meaning.
NoFuture in Time Clauses
• Like all future forms, the Simple Futurecannot
be used in clausesbeginning with time
expressions suchas:when, while, before,
after, by the time, assoon as,if, unless, etc.
Instead of Simple Future, SimplePresentis
used.
Examples:
• When you will arrive tonight, we will goout
for dinner. Not Correct
• When you arrive tonight, we will go outfor
dinner. Correct
Activity
Put the verbs into the correct form (future I simple).
Use will.

You (meet)……………………… lots of interesting people.

CONTINUE

Everything (be)………………….. perfect.

Simple future tense/ Future indefinite tense

  • 2. Definitio nA future tense is a verb form that generally marks the event described by the verb as not having happened yet, but expected to happen in the future.
  • 3. SimpleFuture Tense • Simple Future hastwo different formsin English: "will" and "be goingto." • Although the two forms cansometimes be used interchangeably, they often expresstwo very different meanings. • Both "will" and "be going to" refer to a specific time in thefuture.
  • 4. Thestructure of the simple futuretense subject + auxiliary verb will + main verb base V1 For negative sentences in the simple future tense, we insert not between the auxiliaryverb and main verb. For question sentences, we exchange the subject and auxiliaryverb.

  • 8. USE1 : "Will" to Expressa Voluntary Action • "Will" often suggeststhat aspeaker will do something voluntarily. Avoluntary actionis one the speaker offers to do for someone else. • Often, we use"will" to respond to someone else's complaint or request forhelp. • We also use"will" when we request that someone help usor volunteer to do something for us. Similarly, we use"will not" or "won't" when we refuse to voluntarily do

  • 10. USE2 : "Will" to ExpressaPromise "Will" is usually used inpromises. Examples: • I will callyou when Iarrive. • If I am elected President of the United States, I will makesure everyone hasaccessto inexpensive health insurance. • I promise I will not tell him about the surprise party. • Don't worry, I'll becareful. • I won't tell anyone yoursecret.
  • 11. USE3 "Begoingto" to Expressa Plan • "Be going to" expressesthat something isa plan. • It expressesthe idea thataperson intends to do something in thefuture. • It does not matter whether the plan is realistic or not.
  • 12. Examples: • Heisgoingto spendhis vacation in Hawaii. • Sheisnot goingto spendher vacation in Hawaii. • A: When are we goingto meet eachother tonight? B:We are goingto meet at 6 PM. • I'm goingto bean actor when I grow up. • Michelle isgoingto beginmedical school next year. • Theyare goingto drive all the way to Alaska. • Who are you goingto invite to the party? • A: Who isgoingto makeJohn's birthday cake? B:Sueisgoingto makeJohn's birthday cake.

USE4 "Will" or "BeGoingto" to Expressa Prediction • Both "will" and "be going to"can expressthe idea of ageneral prediction about thefuture. • Predictions are guessesabout whatmight happen in the future. • In "prediction" sentences, the subject usually haslittle control over the futureand therefore USES1-3 do not apply. • In the following examples, there isno difference in meaning.
  • 14. Examples: • Theyear 2222 will beavery interesting year. Theyear 2222 isgoingto beavery interesting year. • JohnSmith will bethe next President. JohnSmith isgoingto bethe next President. • Themovie "Zenith" will win severalAcademy Awards. Themovie "Zenith" isgoingto win several AcademyAwards.
  • 15. IMPORTANT • In the Simple Future, itis not always clear which USEthe speaker hasinmind. • Often, there is more than one way tointerpret asentence's meaning.
  • 16. NoFuture in Time Clauses • Like all future forms, the Simple Futurecannot be used in clausesbeginning with time expressions suchas:when, while, before, after, by the time, assoon as,if, unless, etc. Instead of Simple Future, SimplePresentis used.
  • 17. Examples: • When you will arrive tonight, we will goout for dinner. Not Correct • When you arrive tonight, we will go outfor dinner. Correct
  • 18. Activity Put the verbs into the correct form (future I simple). Use will. You (earn)……………………. a lot of money. You (travel)………………………. around the world. You (meet)……………………… lots of interesting people. Everybody (adore) …………………….. you.
  • 19. CONTINUE You (not / have)……………… any problems. Many people (serve)……………… you. They (anticipate)…………………. your wishes. There (not /be) ………………..anything left to wishfor. Everything (be)………………….. perfect. But all these things (happen / only)……………. if you marry me
