This document provides examples of how to change direct speech into reported speech. It shows how yes/no questions and wh- questions are changed by using reporting verbs like "asked" and removing quotation marks. Examples are given for changing questions about time, place, reason and reported requests into the past tense. Common reporting verbs are listed and examples are given of changing direct questions into reported speech using these verbs. a) He said to me:” Do you want ice cream?
He asked me if I wanted ice cream.
b) He said to me:” When does the film start?”
He asked me when the film started.

3. Yes/No Questions
1. He said: “Do you have a brother?”
He asked if I had a brother.
2. Meg said: “Is anyone at home?.”
Meg asked if anyone was at home.
3. She said to me: “Have you met him?”
She asked me if I had met him.
4. He said : “Did you know this?”
He asked if I had known that.

4. Wh- Questions
1. He said:”What time is it?”
He asked what time it was.
2. She said to me:”Where did you get it?”
She asked me where I had got it.
3. Josh said to Mary:” Why are you doing this?
Josh asked Mary why she was doing that.
4. We said to them:”When will you be ready?”
We asked them when they would be ready.

6. Change the sentences into
Reported Speech:
1. I said to my friend: “Can you help me?” (request)
I asked my friend if she could help me.
I asked my friend to help me.
2. She said: “Did you book the tickets?”
She asked if I had booked the tickets.
3. He said to me: “Where have you been?”
He asked me where I had been.
4. They said: “What are you going to do tomorrow?”
They asked (enquired) what we were going to do
the next day.
