Refraction of Light
Prepared by: ALVIN P. CAJILES
Teacher I
Narra National High School
Distinguish incident ray against refracted ray.
OBJECTIVE
 Swimming pool and ponds appear shallower than they
really are.
 A stone is at a deeper depth than where it appears to be.
 A stick bends in water.
Refraction is the change
in the direction of light
when it passes from one
medium to another of
different optical density.
Please be known that…
It is also defined as the
bending of light when it
enters from one
transparent medium into
another
Please be known that…
René Descartes and
Willebrord Snell first studied
refraction in the 17th century
by shining a narrow beam of
light onto a transparent
medium and measured two
angles – the angle of
incidence and the angle of
refraction.
Please be known that…
Try to look at this
Study this
o The index of refraction describes how much light bends as it
enters a medium.
o Light travels through a vacuum at a speed
and v is the speed of light in the substance.
o Light travels through materials at a speed less than its
speed in a vacuum.
o Formula for Index of Refraction:
o The higher the index of refraction, the slower light travels in
the substance.

REFRACTED OR
INCIDENT?
WHAT TO DO?
1. Materials needed:
penlight, transparent
glass
2. Place the glass over a
flat surface.
3. Turn-on the penlight,
point it towards the
glass in slanting
position.
4. Observe how light
passes through the
glass.
5. Identify the ray of
refraction and ray of
incidence when the
direction of the ray is
