Asian Seabass is a very popular food fish in South Asian countries. This presentation deals with Asian seabass farming in Thailand which includes breeding, larval development, and growout technology. This presentation is a part of my internship work at the Asian Institute of technology.
Shrimp farming in India, till 2009, was synonymous with the mono culture of tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon. About 1,90,000 ha brackishwater area have been developed for shrimp culture in the country spread over all the coastal states. Since 1995 culture of P monodon is affected by White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) and the development of shrimp farming has become stagnant.
Most of the Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia were also culturing P. monodon and since 2001-02 onwards most of them have shifted to culture of exotic Whiteleg shrimp,Litopenaeus vannamei because of the availability of Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) and Specific Pathogen Resistant (SPR) broodstock. In India, Pilot-scale introduction of L.vannamei was initiated in 2003 and after a risk analysis study large-scale introduction has been permitted in 2009.
Mud crabs, also known as mangrove crabs, occur widely in estuaries and along tropical, subtropical and warm temperate coasts in the world. There are four species of mud crab (Family: Portunidae), Scylla serrata, S. tranquebarica, S. paramamosain and S. olivacea that are the focus of both commercial fisheries and aquaculture production throughout their distribution. They are among the most valuable crab species in the world, with the bulk of their commercial production sent live to market.

Lobsters are high value shell fishes. have good export value.
P. homarus also has high protein (24.18%) and carbohydrate content (55.68%) and lowest lipid content (6.18%) compare with other species. Another overexploitation of wild stock leading absence/rarely availability of lobster in Market, hence it is very imp to diversify potential lobster species. Recently rock lobster found breeding success, had good scope for continuous seed production.
Any aquatic invertebrate animals having a cutaneous or calcareous shell surrounding there body and belonging to the phylum Mollusca, the class Crustacea (phylum Arthropoda), or phylum Echinodermata is known as shellfish. The term is often used for the edible species of the groups, especially those that are fished or raised commercially. The most commercially important shellfish are:
• Mollusk: Oysters, mussels, scallops and clams
• Crustacean: Shrimp, prawn, lobster, crab and crayfish
• Echinoderm: sea urchins and sea cucumbers
Shellfish hatchery is a place where shellfish seeds are produced in a controlled way. Hatchery management is a branch of science which deals with the activities including from collection of brood shellfish to seed production. Culturing of shellfish has occurred since ancient times. Although controlled rearing of young shell has long existed, hatchery production is a more recent advancement. Producing seed under controlled conditions in a hatchery will disconnect its production from environmental factors and provide a reliable supply of seed. Oysters, mussels and mud crabs are the most important groups of shellfish after shrimp and prawn. These are popular among the western countries and becoming more popular all over the world. So hatchery management of oyster, mussel and crab is crucial.

Fresh water fish processing. Business Opportunities in fish processing Industry.
The term fish processing refers to the processes associated with fish and fish products between the time fish are caught or harvested, and the time the final product is delivered to the customer. Although the term refers specifically to fish, in practice it is extended to cover any aquatic organisms harvested for commercial purposes, whether caught in wild fisheries or harvested from aquaculture or fish farming.

Production and Formulation of Fish and Shrimp (Prawn) FeedAjjay Kumar Gupta
Production and Formulation of Fish and Shrimp (Prawn) Feed. Commercial Aquaculture Feed Manufacturing Business
Food is the main element for living of all animal. Like other animals fish also needs sufficient and nutritious fish feed for proper growth and survival. Maximum fish production is not possible without nutritious feed. The ingredients of well-balanced nutritious feed for fish are protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins, minerals and water. The feed like moss or aquatic insects which produce naturally in the pond is not sufficient for fish.
Aquafeed, also known as the fish feed, is a commercially produced food item for various aquatic species such as fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. Aquafeed is extensively used in the aquaculture sector. Fish cultivated on farms and feeding on pests found on crops can also be categorized under the aquafeed market segment.
Aqua feed is food formulated specifically for fishes, which is commercially manufactured via numerous industrial procedures. Aqua feed is primarily available as pellets, which contain important ingredients that provide nutrition to fish. As per the fish species and size to be fed, these pellets are available in many sizes. Further, the properties of pellets can be easily changed so that they sink to the bottom of fish tanks or float on the surface of the water. The nutrient contents of the feed can be controlled and this has benefitted the global aqua feed market in the recent past. Also, there has been a growth in the farming aquatic species such as crustaceans, mollusks, and fish.

2. The Project Idea
• Shrimp farming has now developed into an
important export-oriented food industry especially
in South Asian countries. The perception of an
unlimited market demand, high export price,
generation of employment and increase in foreign
exchange earnings may have encouraged many
countries in the region rich in aquatic resources to
place high emphasis on the development of the
shrimp culture industry.
3. The production
The ponds used in this type of
farming system are generally
irregular in shapes and sized
(3–20 hectares). Usually each
pond has a peripheral ditch
10–20 m wide and 30–60 cm
deep.
4. Intensive method of culture operation
• This culture operation is more sophisticated requiring
very high financial and technical inputs. The rearing
facilities are either earthen ponds or concrete tanks.
• Sizes of pond or tank vary for 500 m2–5,000 m2 as
found in Japan, Taiwan, Philippines and Thailand.
Dikes may be of pure earthen material, earth coated
with plastic sheets or concrete
5. Intensive method of culture operation
• Culture facilities consist of circular tanks with capacities ranging from 1000 to
2000 tons and average height of 2 meters.
• A sand substrate covers the tank bottom and water circulation is effected by
flow through system.
• The shrimps are fed daily with high protein formulated diet. Stocking density
ranges from 200–250 per m2 and average production ranges from 1.5 to 3
tons per crop in 1000 ton tank and about 10–20 tons/ha/year in earthen
ponds with concrete dikes.
6. Seed Supply
• Shrimp fry are generally collected from the
wild. However, substantial number can be
supplied through shrimp hatcheries.
• Natural abundant supply of naturally
occurring post-larvae of Penaeid shrimp in
many tropical/ subtropical Asian countries
has supported a large number of shrimp
farms in the region. About 80% of the small
shrimp farmers still depend on wild fry for
culture. Fry are collected either through
trapping ponds or from natural fry grounds.
7. Seed from
hatchery
Shrimp hatchery has become an important supply
source for fry. Some hatcheries can produced shrimp
fry all year round as long as spawners are available.
An added advantage is that hatchery-bred fry of the
same age are almost uniform in size and can be
produced in large quantities at any one time. At
15–21 days old, the fry are ready for stocking in
ponds. Although wild fry are ready for stocking in
ponds. is inconsistent. The hatchery, therefore, is a
more reliable seed source.
