3. Characteristics of Nauplius ( I – VI)
Nauplius I : Furcal setae 1+1, setae of
appendages non-plumose. Total length 0.28 to
0.31 mm. Duration 3-4 hours.
Nauplius II: The total length varies from 0.31
to 0.32 mm. Furcal setae l+l. Posterodorsal
tooth absent, all setae on appendages plumose.
Duration 3-4 hours.
Nauplius III: The total length varies from
0.31 to 0.34 mm. Furcal setae 3+3. Duration 4-
5 hours.
Nauplius IV: The total length varies from
0.34 to 0.36 mm. Furcal setae 4+4. Duration 5-
6 hours.
Nauplius V: The total length varies from 0.36
to 0.41 mm. Fureal selae 6+6. Duration l0-2
hours.
Nauplius VI: The total length varies from 0.46
to 0.53 mm. Furcal setae 7+7. Body more
elongated. Carapace rudiment seen. Duration
15-24 hours.
5. Characteristics of Zoea I
Carapace anteriorly rounded.
Developing compound eyes covered with
carapace.
Body divisible into 3 parts : anterior
region with 6 segmented apendages;
thorax in middle; posterior part with
unsegmented abdomen.
Frontal organ present as rounded
protuberances.
Telson not separated from abdomen by
movable joints., each lobe of caudal furca
with 7 setae.
Furcal lobes of telson broad and short with
semicircular space between them.
Duration 36-48 hours. Zoea I
6. Characteristics of Zoea II
Presence of long ventrally bent rostrum.
Stalked compound eyes.
Absence of frontal organs distinguish this
substage from the previous one.
Bifurcated supraorbital spines.
Telson with 7 pairs of furcal setae.
Duration 36-48 hours.
7. Characteristics of Zoea III
Rostrum long, supraorbital simple,
not bifurcate..
5th and 6th abdominal segments with
posterolateral spines, 6th also has a
pair of ventrolateral spines.
Telson demarcated from 6th abdominal
segment by an articulating joint.
Telson with 8 pairs of furcal setae.
Duration of this substage is 36-48
hours.
8. Characteristics of Mysis I
Larvae assumes more or less shrimp like
appearance.
Rostrum long and curved, extending
beyond eye, devoid of rostral spines.
Thoracic appendages are well developed.
Abdominal segments 3-6 with
dorsomedian spines.
Telson broader distally with a median
notch, each lobe bearing 2 lateral and 6
terminal setae.
Minute pleopod buds on abdominal
segments.
Duration 24-48 hours.
9. Characteristics of Mysis II
Rostrum usually without teeth, rarely a
minute tooth may be present.
Pleopods short and unsegmented.
Duration 24-48 hours.
10. Characteristics of Mysis III
Rostrum with 1 tooth in some specimen.
Pleopods long, 2 segmented without setae.
Duration 24-48 hours.
11. Characteristics of Post Larvae (PL 1)
Rostrum with 1 distinct tooth.
Pleopods setose ( bearing setae).
Exopods shrunken, without setae.
