Evolution Of A Beetle Research Paper
Introduction/Definition
In the natural world, the animal s survival is based on the premise of how well they adapt in a
particular environment and form relationships with other species. Animals have survived for
thousands of years, because of this focused reasoning. Success is accredited to the outsmarting of
adversaries by several known strategic techniques, such as camouflage, deceptive markings, warning
coloration, and chemical defense, but the most intriguing is mimicry. Camouflage and mimicry are
defined by Peter Forbes as the resemblance that one life form has either to another or to a part of the
environment ̶ have some special features which make them ideal for studying evolution in action.

Disguised animals generally have wide ranging structural modifications appearing like a leaf, a stone,
bark, or a twig. The greatest perfection and skill is the disappearance of certain insects and amphibians
within piles of living or dead leaves or a bush ( Dazzled ). . One such expert is the rove beetle that
contorts its body inward to reveal only the back. The beetle s back is unique in that it resembles a dab
of rotted leaf or a bird dropping. This allows the beetle to not only hide, but to become the predator.
This beetle is known to roost on dead carcasses, and secret an irresistible chemical that lures copious
amounts of fruit flies in for a crushing ambush ( Masters ). Even plants can join in a charade of their

Psychodynamic Theories And Theories Of The Psychodynamic...
This paper attempts to explore psychodynamic theory in depth as well as its presentation in real life as
presented by Sigmund Freud. It presents an analysis of the theory in terms of its historical
developments and perspectives as well as the ideas of its main supporters. Further, the paper also
attempts to bring to light the hidden and unambiguous assumptions made by the theory concerning
individuals, groups, families, systems and communities. Additionally, It will attempt to highlight the
relationship that exists between the theory and other theories. The key concepts discussed by Feuds
psychodynamic theory have also been discussed in this paper. In addition, the paper also focuses on
the application of the psychodynamic theory in social work direct practice and how the theory has
influenced various aspects and beliefs in the field. Finally, the paper will attempt to expose the main
criticisms of the psychodynamic theory as presented by various psychological researchers. Amongst
these three theories this paper will explore and explain family counseling approach of the
Psychoanalytic therapy and its approach. This paper will also explain five commonly used family
therapy theories which are strategic, systematic, intergenerational, structural, and experimental. This
paper will also go into biblical views to the psychodynamic theory and its biblical approach.

One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich Essay
Solzhenitsyn s book, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, is a well written piece of literature that
describes in stunning detail the life that may await a Zek in the Gulag System. One Day in the Life of
Ivan Denisovich is not spread over an extended period of time, but about a single day from reveille to
when Ivan Denisovich s eyes close that night. This allows for a more critical and unshrouded view of
what Denisovich is thinking while performing menial tasks such as eating, walking to the work site,
and observing those around him. Denisovich tells the reader about the people around him and his
thoughts on their character. For example, Senka was a quiet, luckless fellow. One of his ear drums had
been mashed in 41. Through this constant observation, Solzhenitsyn gives the readers further insight
into the everyday lives of these those who were in the Gulag System. Denisovich also tells the reader
about his wife and home, which is seen in glimpses through their rare letters. The work Denisovich
does is described in a constant flow, just as it was performed at that time. The only breaks that are
obvious in Solzhenitsyn s book are meals which break up work and leisure periods. The meals are
when Denisovich really pays attention to the people around him; he observes whether people take off
their hats like he does, and creates assumptions about their character by the way they ... Show more

Yet, one can sense that the purpose behind this novel is to inform the public about what an average
day may be in the Soviet Union Gulag System. Solzhenitsyn achieves this goal by exploring every
aspect, no matter how menial it may be. He describes even the smallest aspects of that day such as the
food and temperature in vibrant detail in order to get across the emotion and feeling Ivan Denisovich
was experiencing at that time. He described rules and consequences vividly such

Differences And Roles Of A Charge Nurse And The Charge Nurse
Conflict means different opinion to different people. In some reason, conflict can cause fighting, war
or trade embargos. But for other people it might be a different in opinion, perspective or personality.
Others may think they are in a conflict situation, when the other side may feel that they are just
discussing opposing views. His situation depends on our effects can result in damaging our
relationship. As a charge nurse, we have to be aware how this issue arises and how to overcome and
manage this conflict. If this conflict causes an unhealthy situation and we are allowing it to develop ,
the side effect can result in lasting damage to the relationship between the staff not only in the
working place but also a personal relationship. Conflict normally involve opposing views on one or

Always ask, What about the work situation is causing these staff members to fail?
The workplace conflict may come out to be strictly interpersonal; however, it is important to ask
yourself if it is possible that workplace conditions were the catalyst or the enabler. Maybe a charge
nurse or head nurse ignored the system of budding. The new nurse shoud work together (working side
to side) with senior staff instead of having her work entirely by herself. Eventho the charge nurse is
always assisting her, but the charge nurse has many other duties to bear away.
Often, when the conflict happens, it is more volatile and more debilitating to the organization than it
was initially. An open conflict or interpersonal disagreement festers just below the surface in the work
environment. It comes up to the surface whenever enabled, and always at the worst possible instant.
The following are strategies for conflict resolution:

Claude McKay s Prominent Position in the Harlem...
Claude McKay real name is Festus Claudius McKay was an important person in the Harlem
Renaissance, a prominent literary movement of the 1920s. His poems are traditional in technique and
on the sentimental side in subject and tone.1 McKay was born in Sunny Ville, Jamaica, in 1889.
McKay was the son of a peasant farmer. He took pride and knew a lot about his African heritage. He
was interested in English poetry dealing with literary. McKay s brother, Uriah Theophilus and an
Englishmen Walter Jekyll helped McKay study British masters. McKay studied the British masters

He wrote: These first two volumes are already marked by a sharpness of vision, an inborn realism, and
a freshness which provides a pleasing contrast with the conventionality which, at this time, prevails
among the black poets of the United States. For Songs of Jamaica McKay received an award and paid
from the Jamaican Institute of Arts and Sciences. He used the money to finance a trip to America, and
in 1912 he arrived in South Carolina. He then traveled to Alabama and enrolled at the Tuskegee
Institute, where he studied for two months before transferring to Kansas State College. In 1914 he left
school entirely for New York City and worked various menial jobs. As in Kingston, McKay
encountered racism in New York City, and that racism forced him to continue writing poetry. In 1917,
under the pseudonym Eli Edwards, McKay published two poems in a journal called the Seven Arts.
His poetry was discovered by critic Frank Hattis, who then included some of McKay s other poems in
Pearson s Magazine. McKay s most famous poems from this period was To the White Fiend. A few

Analysis Of One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest By Ken Kesey
Sigmund Freud was someone who turned clinical psychology on its head; therefore, it only makes
sense that he would be an inspiration for someone who completely redefined literature. In the novel
One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest author Ken Kesey weaves an intricate, while subtextual, theme that
mirrors concepts of Freudian psychology. About a decade after publication, in her article Kesey and
Freud, former Northeastern University professor Ruth Sullivan analyzes the progression and impact of
Kesey s use of Freudian psychology, most specifically, Kesey s use of Freud s Oedipus Complex as it
pertains to the characters Nurse Ratched, R.P. McMurphy, and Chief Bromden. While it is true that
McMurphy and Bromden represent the typical Freudian father son ... Show more content on

According to an article titled The Oedipal Crisis, the main stages of the Oedipal Complex that deals
with a mother are that, the first love object for [the son] is the mother, the young boy is threatened by
the father s relationship with his mother, and the father is perceived as an enemy.
(http://www.changingstates.co.uk/freud.html). Nurse Ratched never fulfills any of those roles; in fact,
she is seen as the clear enemy the whole entire book. The enemy is never McMurphy; instead, Nurse
Ratched is described as the root of all the trouble here (Kesey, 185). Ratched and McMurphy s
relationship is not sexual and the men on the ward are never envious of McMurphy for his relationship
with Nurse Ratched. Instead, Nurse Ratched is seen as a woman who McMurphy describes as a ball
cutter (Kesey, 60) Nurse Ratched is not someone who is seen as appealing or attractive or warm like a
Freudian mother, rather, she is a woman that makes a man powerless and asexual. Freud s Oedipal
triangle is clearly missing one point because the Big Nurse does not fulfill the concept of a Freudian
mother. That is where Sullivan s analysis falls

Pros And Cons Of Semi-Automatic Transmission
DISCUSSION In past years, transmission includes the right angle drives and other gearing in
windmills, horse powered devices and steam engines that supports pumping, milling and hoisting.
This has been modified in most modern gearboxes that are being used to increase the rotation while
reducing the speeding like in a motor crank which is an arm attached at the right angles to the rotating
tube. It is used to convert circular motion. The decrease in speed produces a mechanical advantage,
increasing rotation or force. Let us discuss one of the common vehicle being used by common people

Mostly drivers wonder how a semi automatic vehicle can be operated. This is actually a hybrid form
of transmission. When it is said to be hybrid, it is a mixture of manual and automatic transmission
where an integrated control system handles manipulation of the clutch automatically, but the driver
can still and could take manual control of gear selection. Based on the research made, semi automatic
transmission is sometimes called a clutch less manual , or automated manual transmission. Mostly of
this transmission, the driver is allowed to fully delegate gear shifting choice to the control system
which acts as like it was regular automatic transmission. Semi Automatic Transmission or SAT does
not change gears automatically, but rather helps manual gear changes by giving out the need to press a
clutch pedal at the same time as changing gears. It uses electronic sensors, pneumatics, processors and
actuators to shift gear on input from the driver or by a computer. SAT is designed to provide a better
driving experience through fast overtaking vehicles on highways. Some motorcycles also use a system
with a typical gear change but without the need for manual clutch operation. Semi automatic
transmissions have also made their way into the truck and bus market in the early

Dynamic Character Of Ophelia In Shakespeare s Hamlet
The character of Ophelia in Shakespeare s Hamlet is a dynamic character often overlooked by most
readers. At first glance, she is displayed as weak and easily manipulated, shown by her suicide in the
play. However, when her character is looked into with more depth, she comes off as a character who is
strong and independent and made the choice to kill herself with a purpose. Hamlet is a revenge
tragedy, but Hamlet isn t the only character who seeks revenge. Ophelia chooses to kill herself not out
of sorrow, but out of revenge against her father and Hamlet. Ophelia s father was portrayed as a man
who tried to have control over his daughter s life and the choices she makes. In Ophelia s first scene,
Polonius and her brother Laertes, are talking to Ophelia about her virtue Tender yourself more dearly/
Or not to crack the wind of the poor phrase,/ Running it thus you ll tender me a fool (1.3.113 115).
Polonius is lecturing Ophelia on the matter of her virtue, and how it is sacred to her. It is something
that she must keep safe at all costs and not fall to the whims of Hamlet. He doesn t believe that Hamlet
actually likes Ophelia and that instead he only wants Ophelia for her body. Polonius does not take into

know that a suicide would not have been given a Christian burial, so she had to plan her death in a

Investors do not like to see this and so inevitable just as quickly as the figures were announced, their
shares plummeted: from 14p to £10.54 (Fletcher, 2010). It s clear the company needs to sort this issue
out and develop a strategy that will enable them to make profits in all the markets they are in. The
question that needs to be asked is: Why is our strategy working in Africa and Asia but not in Europe
and North America?
In 2009 Diageo announced that it was to reduce its work force in the Glasgow and Kilmarnock plants
in Scotland by 900 workers. The company faced wide spread criticism from both the Scottish
government and trade unions for their refusal to negotiate or adopt a compromise suggested by the
Scottish government, which could have saved at least some of these workers jobs. Considering the
brand had been linked to Kilmarnock for almost two centuries and most workers had been working in
the plants for generations, the way in which they were treated by the company, was abominable.
(Maddox 2009) This event however, highlighted a weakness between the workforce and the managers
of the company which could be the source of many problems in future. If workers in other plants, as
result of the Kilmarnock/Glasgow incident assume that the company views them as disposable labour,
not only could the company land themselves a demotivated workforce; which in turn could lead to

Chaucer was considered around 1340, more likely than not at his people s home on Thames Road in

Fountainhead Essay Outline
Ayn Rand, the author of the book Fountainhead, had very strong and insightful beliefs. One such
belief, as quoted by Ayn Rand, pertains to the idea of people that do not follow trends. She believes
that throughout history there have been people that decided to step off of the path that everyone was
on, in order to create their vision that no one has had before. The second someone does something
different many people start to think they are crazy and do not think their ideas are practical. Although
the inventors face much opposition, they still manage to come out on top. Ayn Rand s believes that

written. Not only was the story told through writing, it was also made into multiple movies. Rand
mentions how even though they were not liked, they still came out on top. J.K. Rowling s books were
not liked at first, but eventually they became one of the best selling book series and she came out on
top. Another individual that fits Ayn Rand s quote is Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus is known for a lot of
things, especially her being a disney star. At the beginning of her career, she starred on Hannah
Montana, a disney channel tv show, and was a popstar as both Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus.
Because of Disney Channel s reputation of being mostly a kids tv channel, Miley Cyrus was seen as a

Song, and started to sign more edgy songs. Many people continued to love her not only as an actor,
but as a singer too. A few years ago, Miley Cyrus took a huge turn. She started singing in a very
different style and dressing in crazy provocative outfits. Ayn Rand states that when people start to go

Justice, The Necession Of Justice In Ovid s Metamorphosis
Justice, what is justice? Is justice the administration of law, a way to punish the wrong, create an
example for the spectators? Yes, Indeed, by definition justice is the administration of law, it is to push
the wrongdoers according to laws. However, in Ovid s Metamorphosis, justice is not just at all.
Females are given a harsher punishment than males. Demigods are punished while other gods are not.
In Metamorphosis justice is controlled by the superior (the gods), while the inferior (mortals) are
always punished whether they committed a crime or not. For example, the story of Io, she was a fair
nymph who caught the eye of Jupiter (Zeus), and was punished for many days. This story is one of the
many that Ovid writes about in Metamorphosis, where a human or female was punished without fault.
When people think of justice, they think of an image of scale carried by a blind women, believing
justice to be blind. However in Ovid s Metamorphosis, justice is not blind. As I stated earlier, the story
of Io, a fair nymph who caught the eye of Jupiter, was raped by Jupiter and then turned into a cow
because Jupiter had taken an interest in her. When Ovid writes, Juno... blazing with anger... she wasted
no time in venting her fury by sending a horrible demon to frighten the eyes of Io... a goading terror
was planted deep in her heart, which hounded her over the world in flight... the groans that she uttered,
the tears that she shed... pleading... to grant her the end to her suffering... he is describing the pain of
Io, but she was at no fault. Jupiter should have been punished for not being loyal to juno, but he was
not punished, a human, a female that had no fault was.
Another story that Ovid mentions in Metamorphosis is the story of Myrrha, another female punished
severely for breaking the laws of society. Myrrha was the daughter of Cinyras, a king. Hundreds of
suitors came to fight for her hand, but she was in love with her own father. The fathered welcomed his
flesh and blood to the bed of uncleanness... filled with her father s unhallowed seed... bearing the fruit
of her monstrous crime in her impious womb.., describes the crime Myrrah commits. She was

The Native American identity
To explain the Native American identity is necessary to take into consideration several arguments. A
group s identity is never a universal consensus, since every individual s experience would define the

Sacred Sites (Departments of Defense, the Interior, Agriculture, and Energy and the Advisory Council

just to mention some of them. The intention of this brief explanation has a main and a secondary
purpose. Mainly it aims to introduce a categorical difference between the State and the peoples self
defined as Native Americans; which raises the question is the Native American a race or an ethnicity?
Secondly, to state that Race and racism do not simply or necessarily follow from the mere propinquity
and interaction of two peoples who happen to be physically different [...] but the social recognition of

Alcohol In A Streetcar Named Desire
When there is a desire, that goes uncontrolled, there will be dire consequences.
In A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, it is seen through the characters actions and
symbols in the play reminding the reader of the theme, that if a strong desire goes unchecked, will
have bad outcomes.
When the main character Blanche Dubois drinks, it impedes her thinking. Alcohol in this setting is
used as a means of escape. Wine is thought as higher class while beer is associated with the lower
class. Yet, it doesn t matter whether wine or beer is consumed, they both have the same effect on the
body and Blanche tries to justify her excessive drinking and hides it from her sister, well, honey, a shot
never does a coke any harm! (92). If she truly didn t think it was a poor decision, she wouldn t be
hiding her addiction, but deep down she knows it is the wrong thing. Blanche is trying to wipe away
her past, and drown out her sorrows all the while trying to appear sober in front of anyone else around
her. The alcohol is her way of escaping reality and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

For many years and by many Americans the Battle of Little BigHorn was looked at as a valiant effort
by brave Americans to fight for what they believed in under a well organized and successful
commanding officer. Through the accounts in this book, Philbrick shows us this was not necessarily
the case. Custer and his men went into the battle extremely too overconfident and he seriously
underestimated the power of his opposing army. This overconfidence caused a great lack of proper
preparation for the battle by the US army which ultimately helped lead to their demise in this battle.
Other factors that contributed to this loss were the facts that Custer did not have such great command
over some of his officers. Several of them purposely disobeyed orders and acted upon their own
whims. One officer in particular, Sargent Reno, showed up to the battle drunk and was seen drinking
from a flask of amber liquid. The confusion, disorder and underestimation of the enemy all lead to the
chaos and massacre that ensued on Custer and his men. The fight between Custer s men and the
indians proved to be a rout, a panic till the last man was killed. Custer lead reckless charges down the
hills and along the river and by Indian accounts, he was the first to be struck and killed. Without their
leader so early in battle, the Seventh Cavalry was left in much disarray. A panic ensued among the
men and according to

Foreshadowing In Of Mice And Men Analysis
The novel Of Mice and Men uses foreshadowing successfully to build tension towards the final
tragedy. Foreshadowing is shown consistently throughout the novel in various ways including; the
introduction of Curley s wife, Lennie s constant unawareness of his own strength, and Candy s dog
being killed. These situations and scenes build towards the final tragedy of the novel effectively.
Throughout the novel, Lennie is shown to love and care for various animals and people, however in
each instance Lennie is shown to be unaware of his own strength, and inadvertently hurts the things he
loves. This builds towards the final tragedy in the novel, as Lennie unintentionally kills Curley s wife,
leading to George and Lennie s worst fears to be fulfilled. This is also shown through George s
constant precautions and his fear is stemming from what Lennie was accused of in Weed. This also
foreshadows that the ending is going to be tragic as George is constantly thinking of the worst case
scenario. The first example of Lennie s unawareness of his own strength happens at the beginning of
the novel, as it is revealed that he had killed a mouse. George seeing this as a stepping stone to what
will happen explodes saying you always kill em (Of Mice and Men Steinbeck. J, 2006 page 14)
During the novel, Lennie gets a puppy at the beginning it seems that Lennie has grown and can care
for the puppy, which George sees as a sign of hope. George desperately wants to believe in his dream

Persuasive Essay On Secondhand Smoke
Introduction The federal government should pass a nationwide smoking ban from all indoor facilities.
There are many controversial statements out there, but indoor smoking should not be one of them.
There are many lives being affected by people smoking in public facilities. As this puts others at risk
for severe health problems.
Main Point #1 Many may ask what secondhand smoke is. Or many may ask is it harmful? Some may
think, just because I don t actually smoke cigarettes then it can t be dangerous. This is where people
need to be informed on just exactly what secondhand smoke is. According to the CDC website
Secondhand smoke comes from tobacco smoke such as cigarettes, and there are over 4,000 chemicals
in them while over 250 are the ones that they actually know that can cause deadly diseases. The CDC
website also states how many deaths are caused form secondhand exposure in the U.S every year, and
that is around 34,000. To think a lot of these deaths could have been prevented with the help of a ...

Government Aid And Assistance During The United States
Government aid/assistance, or as others may know it, welfare, was created in order to provide
assistance and aid to those in the community that may be unemployed or in need of assistance due to a
lack of income for both individuals as well as families. In the beginning it was the federal government
that managed the assistance program but that was only until the government assistance reform took
place, which sent the jurisdiction back down to the states. There was a strong urge from the American
citizens to reform the system due to the fact that many Americans believed that the government
assistance program was being abused by those utilizing the program. Many Americans believed that
those utilizing welfare were not looking for employment, not marrying in order to gain more funding
and actually having more children in order to qualify for more cash assistance. Throughout this paper I
will discuss each of the subsequent topics: a history of government aid/assistance in the U.S., a
synopsis of the situation that created the proposal as well as the enactments of required drug testing,
opinions in support of drug testing, ethical consequences based on this proposal for individuals, for the
society as a whole, and for public health. Government Assistance Government Assistance throughout
the U.S. is sometimes referred to as welfare or government programs, these programs were created in

The most commonly used instrument for hedging are Forward Rate, Futures Rate and currency
Options. According to Jean Folger (2012), Derivative is a contract between two or more parties whose
value is based on an agreed upon underlying financial asset, index or security. Then currency
derivatives are a contract whose prices are partially derived from the value of the underlying currency
that it represents. And firms especially MNC s commonly take positions in currency derivatives to
hedge their exposure to exchange rate risk. Jeff, M. Roland, F. (2011).

standard volume of a currency to be exchanged on a specific settlement date. A forward contract is an
agreement between a corporation/firm and a commercial bank to exchange a specified amount of a
currency at a specified exchange rate on a specified date in the future. In comparison both represents a

Visual Analysis Of A Chosen Cartoon By Adam Zygus
Today I will be analysing my chosen cartoon by Adam Zygus. This cartoon details the problem that
society has with Donald Trump. The problem being that society knows that Donald Trump does not
care for his people or his country. This cartoon signifies the social and moral issue that Donald Trump
has introduced to America. In this essay the satirical elements will be explored and explained to
further discuss the context and tone of this cartoon.
In this image it is clearly seen by the audience that Donald Trump is the target being criticised. He is
being criticised for his inadequate job at being the President of the United States. The character is
blatantly shown as Donald Trump due to the caricature technique used to embellish his persona and
main features. The features that the cartoonist exaggerated were his combed hair, squinted eyes, small
hands and his suit. The cartoonist clearly believes that Donald Trump is failing at being a President,
and that he doesn t care for America, nor does he care for any monuments that represent the United
States.
The context of this cartoon is plainly obvious, it is satirical as the message given by the cartoonist is
mocking. This is seen as Donald Trump is in the excavator and is dumping all of America s

draws these things in the background, so they seem more inferior to other objects. The author also

The comment The White House is a dump... proves that Donald Trump believes that these monuments
are useless and do not prove to represent anything. Other audiences would possibly react in a positive
way as they may agree with the cartoon as well as see it as an image that shows Donald Trump s true

The Impact Of Media On The Media Industry
Over all this documentary made me feel very defeated and overwhelmed. Possibly it is just my mood
tonight, but it is clear that a few really wealthy companies run the media in the United States.
There has been a decline in small ownership media companies similar to Independent Lens in recent
years. This decline correlates with the Telecommunication Act of 1996 that ended most ownership
restrictions (Campbell, Martin, Fabos, 2014, p. 224). It was thought that this deregulation would
encourage competition in the media market place, instead it had the opposite effect and created large
media conglomerates.
Cooperation s like Time Warner, Disney, and individuals like Rupert Murdoc own multiple media
outlets making it very difficult for other smaller media outlets to afford to advertise enough to stay in
business. Rather than competing, many of these companies hold joint venture investments and it is not
in their best interest to compete with each other. Deregulations in the industry has allowed these
monopolies to become very powerful limiting the impact of the FCC (Rich Media, Poor Democracy,
n.d.).
The film points out that investigative Journalism has been in a steady decline since 1996. Now that
cooperation s own the news stations it is more about profits rather than true investigative reporting
that costs much more than the fluff reporting or getting your news off the wire. News reporters now
have to compete for ratings and advertisers to stay competitive. Cable

Who Is The Protagonist In Greasy Lake
In the short story Greasy Lake the narrator, our protagonist, describes himself as a 19 year old rebel,
but as the story progresses, we learn how it is all a façade to try to be like the rest of the kids his age.
What started off as a joke to who he thought was his friend Tony Lovett, turned out to be a life lesson
that would crash down his false image of a bad boy. A series of events trigger his common sense and
make him see that his way of living will bring him severe consequences or even death itself. The
narrator changes his opinion on who he wants to be by the end of the story, therefore making him a
round character. When we first meet the narrator and his two friends, we learn that [they] wore torn up
leather jackets, slouched around with toothpicks in [their] mouths, sniffed glue and ether and what
somebody claimed was cocaine (129). This is an example of the rebellious things he does in order to
keep up his bad character image. He goes to the lake because that is where all the bad people hang out
to watch a girl take her clothes off and plunge into the festering murk, drink beer, [and] smoke pot
(129). The lake itself represents how rotten today s adolescents have become, so that is why the lake is
the center of it all. His fight with the man he describes as a greasy character shows how he tries to go
along with his façade, but fails miserably when he gets kicked under the chin, until he knocks him out
with the tire iron. Just when he thinks it s all over, a

The human race, a species consumed by curiosity and discovery. With the rapid growth of scientific

The Human Genome Project is an organization designed to physically map all of the genes in the
human body. Once these scientists uncover all of the genes, it becomes possible to isolate them for
uses such as possible prevention, treatments and cures. This organization promotes the progression of
science to new heights. There have been a number of technological advances since 1990 that have

In order to eliminate this, implementing policies on genetic research must be upheld containing the
extent to which society is willing to allow the change in the population. Scientific experimentation
will forever grow. The possibility to completely diminish science and research is slim. A solution to
this would be enacting rules and regulations. These regulations will limit to only testing on humans for
necessary causes such as disability or disease. If a life remains at risk, the genetic screens should
proceed. However, if for cosmetic reasons, the Human Genome Project needs to draw the line. Extra

Some of these good virtues can be inferred from ancient Egyptian funerary texts such as The Negative
Confession, which state I have not caused pain, I have not caused tears, I have not killed... [10]
According to this text, causing pain and tears, and committing murder were actions that could bar one
from attaining immortality. This standard of ethics differs from the previously held notion, which was
that only kings could become immortals. Because of the potential promise of eternity, people began to

Black Males In America Often Suffer The Consequences Of
Black males in America often suffer the consequences of stereotypical judgment placed upon them.
Because of the conventional image given to black males, they immediately have to deal with the
repercussions of social inequality. In what some consider White America , white males have always
been thought to have white privilege. Black males have been abused for hundreds of years, dating way
back to slavery which began in the 1600 s.
In 1940, Richard Wright wrote a book that later became one of the greatest novels of American

Argument Of Eating Dog Meat
Have you ever eaten dog meat? Every year in the summer, there is a hot potato that heat up the
Internet, it is dog meat . There are rival opinions on this issue. Some people appeal for ban of eating

others say it should be legalized to eat the dog meat. The opinion and the reason why people agree or

And now, I will talk why it is problem to eat dog meat, why we should care about this issue as Korean,

Research Paper On Costco
The success of a company all falls on the shoulders of good management. If you have great
management the company will run very smoothly. There are so many things that take place when you
have good management. It encourages initiative, encourages innovation, helps with growth and
expansion, improves the life of workers, motivates employees and much more. Without good
management there would be no success.
Costco is the company that I have chosen to write about in this essay. Costco is a membership only
warehouse club that provides a huge merchandise selection. They are the second largest retailer in
United States. Costco had 2.3 million members in 2009 and in the year of 2011 they had four million
members sign up. It s not just their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is also the vice president of the finances at Costco in Canada. Susan L. Decker and Tony E. James
are the lead independent directors at Costco. Benjamin S. Carson, John W. Meisenbach, Williams
Gates, Daniel J. Evans, Charles Thomas Munger, Jill S. Ruckalshaus and Jeff S. Raikes are
independent directors at Costco. John W. Meisenbach, Richard M. Libenson and James D. Sinegal are
the directors at Costco s.
Costco s management style is very humble and giving. They have great management for their
employees. Costco gives their employees great health care coverage and a very competitive salary.
They also offer a time of package deal. Sinegal believed that his management should always have a
door open policy. This is where all the managers and executives keep their doors open so that ideas
could be shared and the business could grow. He believed this also made employees feel more
comfortable at the company.
Sinegal also value mistakes. He believed that in the company you had to take risks and if they didn t
work than you have to learn from that and not make the same mistake five times. Sinegal really takes
the time out to engage with his employees and get to know them. He always makes it a point to ask
employees how they feel and to get feedback to improve the company. They get a lot done by learning
from mistakes, treating their employees well and being very giving through salaries and health
benefits.

How Rap Has Changed My Life Essay
Hip hop has literally changed my life Eazy E. From Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, and older
artist like 2Pac, to newer rappers like Lil Pump, 21 Savage, and Future. Any type of music tells its
stories but not the way rap has. The older rap era is known to be considered 1984 1999. The mid era of
rap is known to be from 2000 2014. And then after 2015 to now is considered the modern era. Rap has
changed in so many ways, and nobody knows whether it is good or bad. Older rap comes from many
generations of hip hop artist. Infact, there are more rappers than people think there are. Rap starting in
the 1970 s, about 47 years ago. DJ Kool Herc, the first artist known to rap, was also the first DJ for hip
hop too. When rap started, it was not the most popular. It took some time to get around, but once it
did, people loved it. Later, in the older rap era, rap got even more popular with 2pac, Biggie Smalls,
NWA, Ice Cube, and other rappers like Wu Tang Clan. albums started selling like crazy. ... Show more

Notes On Romeo And Adolescent

Standard Oil Executive Summary
John D. Rockefeller a masterful and innovative business man in the oil industry created a near
monopoly out of Standard Oil (established in 1882) one of the largest companies that led to the
development of antitrust laws in the United States. Fours after the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania,
Rockefeller joined the oil business in 1863 (Pratt, 2012). The early beginnings of the oil industry were
filled with pricing inconsistency and no government regulation (Pratt, 2012). However, Rockefeller
was relentless and efficient in his approach to develop Standard Oil Trust into an industry leader.
While other oil companies utilized investors, Rockefeller s financial discipline ushered the operation s
use of capital through the use of an early form of cost accounting to reduce cost (Pratt, 2012). The
strict cost controls allowed the company to pursue vertical integration and produce competitive
advantages towards long term goals of expansion. The competitive advantages included acquiring the
largest and best refineries, centralized administration, built or bought pipeline transportation into and
out of plants, acquired large markets for refined products, and used innovative technology to develop
crude oil to make commercial products (Pratt, 2012). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without any laws to govern the oil business and prices, rebates on posted railroad rates and drawbacks

China s Recent Urban Planning
Study Context and Data Sources
2.1 Beijing s Recent Urban Planning
Beijing is the capital of China and one of the most populous cities in the world. The current population
as of 2014 was over 21 million. The area of Beijing Metropolitan Area (BMA) is 16,410 square
kilometers. According to land use dataset of Beijing Institute of City Planning, the total urban area as
of 2012 was 1,675 square kilometers. The BMA currently comprises 16 administrative subdivisions,
as presented in Figure 1.
Figure 1 The Beijing Metropolitan Area Since the latest administrative boundary adjustment of
Beijing in 1958, there have been five urban master plans drafted in 1958, 1973, 1982, 1992 and 2004.
Each master plan was associated with a planned overall land use map. Individual land parcels in the
map were assigned with a land classification of either urban (residential, commercial, industrial,
public green land, and mixed use land) or non urban (farmland, forestland, and wetland) (Long, Gu,
Han, 2012). The maps guide the future urban development, and actual land uses should conform to the
land classification plan.
Since the beginning of the 1990s, the BMA has experienced an unprecedented increase in population
growth and urban development. By the year 2003, Beijing s population and urban built up area had
already surpassed the capacity set forth in the 1992 2010 Master Plan, seven years ahead of the plan s
scheduled expiration date. To address new challenges and plan for greater

My Sleep On Sleep Patterns
I have fallen asleep every night for the last 22 years, but yet I never analyzed my own sleep pattern.
Never truly aware of what time I fell asleep, whether I dreamt every night, or the quality of my sleep.
All I knew was that the older I got, the more lethargic I got, and the more caffeine I consumed. Now
given the opportunity to monitor my sleep for five nights with the use of a sleep diary I have better
knowledge of my sleep patterns. Basing my sleep patterns on concepts learned in class, I was able to
understand my sleep, and apply different issues I experienced each night to the resolutions I learned.
Hopefully, after my sleep diary I will know how to improve my quality of sleep on a regular basis
based on concepts learned in class. On the first night I was on the verge of excitement about starting
my sleep diary so I fell asleep at 11:29 P.M. I assumed I would have a regular nights sleep, until I
heard my name being called. Feeling like I was in a horror movie I awakened instantly in fear, to a
cold sweat and rapid heartbeat. Let s face it, my name is not a common everyday name, so I was
terrified until I recalled hypnagogic hallucination. Hypnagogic hallucinations occur at the onset of
sleep (NREM) as the small, fast beta brain waves turn into large slower alpha brain waves (140). As I
checked the time it was only 11:32 P.M. making this the perfect explanation for this bizarre
phenomenon. I then proceeded to fall back to sleep, and woke up at 6:00 A.M. However

Drosophila Melanogaster Cross Lab Report
The Drosophila melanogaster Cross
David Tyer
I. INTRODUCTION
The Drosophila melanogaster is one of genetics most studied organisms. This is due to the Drosophila
melanogaster being an excellent model organism. The Drosophila melanogaster has a short lifespan
and is genetically similar to humans (Adams 2000). This experiment had three major goals. The first
goal of this experiment was to determine which eye colors, body colors and wing type are dominant or
recessive. The second goal was to determine if the gene for eye colors, body colors and wing type are
on an autosomal or a sex chromosome. The third goal was to determine if eye colors, body colors and
wing type are physically linked or independently assorting (Morris and Cahoon). First ... Show more

Heat Loss Investigation Essay
Heat Loss Investigation
Introduction ============
In this investigation I will investigate heat loss and heat transfer in different materials and I will also
investigate which materials are the best insulators. A material that prevents this heat loss is called an
insulator and this helps to keep the object that is being insulated warmer for, longer. Heat is generally
transferred in three different methods:
Conduction
Convection
Radiation
Conduction is energy transferred from the hotter part of a solid to the colder part of conduction. It is
transferred by the particles in the material the particles in the hot part are vibrating more. These
vibrations are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The particles that escape are those with higher than average energy otherwise they would not have
enough energy to escape. Because the liquid loses its higher energy particles, the liquid that is left has
less energy, so it becomes cooler.
I will test two types of insulation to see which is the best at preventing heat loss I will use black card,
and tin foil to insulate the beaker filled with water. I will also do this twice one in a small beaker and
once in a larger beaker. I will investigate also if I use more water will this affect the heat loss. If I use
more water will this hold insulate the water more? So overall I will have four sets of results.
Factors of the experiment =========================
In this experiment there are many different factors that could affect my experiment and the results I
achieve, the factors are:
The amount of water used in each experiment If I use a large of amount of water this will mean that
the water will cool down slower and therefore stay warmer for longer. So the more water I use the
longer the water will stay warm, so if I use a small amount of water it will cool down quick.
Type of Insulation I will use This will change the amount of heat loss significantly. Different types of
material insulate differently depending on how efficiently the material

Speech On Painkillers
It s only natural to head straight for your medicine cabinet when you feel a headache coming on, but
did you know that you re actually putting yourself in danger by relying on painkillers every time you
have a migraine or eye fatigue? Overconsumption of painkillers can and almost always does lead to
the body developing a tolerance to them, which makes your regular dosage ineffective, meaning you
have to increase the number of painkillers you take to get rid of your headache. This, in turn, can
cause you to develop an addiction to painkillers, something that about 10% of Americans are believed
to suffer from.
In order to avoid becoming reliant on painkillers and to ensure they are effective when you do use
them you should always try ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

If you re one of the 28 million Americans who are left deabilited by migraines, you should pay careful
attention to this entry. In cases of severe sinusitis and migraines that refuse to subside, bypass all
previously mentioned pressure points and go straight to the Tian Zhu points.
The Tian Zhu points are unique in that they are located on the back of head. They rest just above the
sides of the neck, where the spine runs into the hairline. Applying pressure to the Tian Zhu points will
ease, and, in some cases, eradicate migraines so that you no longer have to spend hours lying in a
darkened room when you re supposed to be working. The one downside of the Tian Zhu points is that
it can be a challenge to reach them by yourself, so you may need a family member or particularly
obliging colleague to squeeze them for you.

Villa Rica Christian Church
On the fifth of February, I went to my church, Villa Rica Christian Church. In my church, there is a
nursery for kids ranging from birth to two. The first toy was a rectangular box that has shaped holes
on the lid. On the lid, there are four shapes triangle, square, star, and circle. The second toy, is a panel
with four different popups of Sesame Street characters. To trigger the popup, a kid has to either turn,
press, or push a button. The third toy is a child like abacus with five rows of beads that vary by colors
red, yellow, blue, green, and orange.
In the nursery, I examined toys aimed at the sensorimotor stage of cognitive development. This stage
includes actions based on reflexes and the transition to actions based on intentions. Actions that are
satisfying are repeated by the child through a process called primary circular reactions. Soon after this
first stage, the child moves on to the secondary circular reactions or actions that have an effect on the
environment. After experiencing both of these kind of reactions, the child then advances into more
intentional actions. The child begins to have goal directed behavior and curiosity which leads to
experimenting. Lastly, the child will begin to understand symbolic problem solving and object
permanence.
The first toy has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, toys that are too difficult for the child to solve or understand may cause frustration. This
frustration may motivate some kids to continue or cause the majority to abandon the toy. Most
importantly, toys need to provide an avenue through which the child can become exposed or practice
the skills in their stage of development. For kids ranging from birth to two, toys need to help them
practice primary, secondary, and tertiary circular reactions, as well as goal directed behavior and
eventually object

  • 2. Evolution Of A Beetle Research Paper Introduction/Definition In the natural world, the animal s survival is based on the premise of how well they adapt in a particular environment and form relationships with other species. Animals have survived for thousands of years, because of this focused reasoning. Success is accredited to the outsmarting of adversaries by several known strategic techniques, such as camouflage, deceptive markings, warning coloration, and chemical defense, but the most intriguing is mimicry. Camouflage and mimicry are defined by Peter Forbes as the resemblance that one life form has either to another or to a part of the environment ̶ have some special features which make them ideal for studying evolution in action. Disguised animals generally have wide ranging structural modifications appearing like a leaf, a stone, bark, or a twig. The greatest perfection and skill is the disappearance of certain insects and amphibians within piles of living or dead leaves or a bush ( Dazzled ). . One such expert is the rove beetle that contorts its body inward to reveal only the back. The beetle s back is unique in that it resembles a dab of rotted leaf or a bird dropping. This allows the beetle to not only hide, but to become the predator. This beetle is known to roost on dead carcasses, and secret an irresistible chemical that lures copious amounts of fruit flies in for a crushing ambush ( Masters ). Even plants can join in a charade of their own. Certain passion flowers have a transformed portrayal that can simulate butterfly eggs as shown in figure 1. • 4. One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich Essay Solzhenitsyn s book, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, is a well written piece of literature that describes in stunning detail the life that may await a Zek in the Gulag System. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is not spread over an extended period of time, but about a single day from reveille to when Ivan Denisovich s eyes close that night. This allows for a more critical and unshrouded view of what Denisovich is thinking while performing menial tasks such as eating, walking to the work site, and observing those around him. Denisovich tells the reader about the people around him and his thoughts on their character. For example, Senka was a quiet, luckless fellow. One of his ear drums had been mashed in 41. Through this constant observation, Solzhenitsyn gives the readers further insight into the everyday lives of these those who were in the Gulag System. Denisovich also tells the reader about his wife and home, which is seen in glimpses through their rare letters. The work Denisovich does is described in a constant flow, just as it was performed at that time. The only breaks that are obvious in Solzhenitsyn s book are meals which break up work and leisure periods. The meals are when Denisovich really pays attention to the people around him; he observes whether people take off their hats like he does, and creates assumptions about their character by the way they ... Solzhenitsyn achieves this goal by exploring every aspect, no matter how menial it may be. Always ask, What about the work situation is causing these staff members to fail? The workplace conflict may come out to be strictly interpersonal; however, it is important to ask yourself if it is possible that workplace conditions were the catalyst or the enabler. Eventho the charge nurse is always assisting her, but the charge nurse has many other duties to bear away. Often, when the conflict happens, it is more volatile and more debilitating to the organization than it was initially. • 6. Claude McKay s Prominent Position in the Harlem... Claude McKay real name is Festus Claudius McKay was an important person in the Harlem Renaissance, a prominent literary movement of the 1920s. His poems are traditional in technique and on the sentimental side in subject and tone.1 McKay was born in Sunny Ville, Jamaica, in 1889. McKay was the son of a peasant farmer. He took pride and knew a lot about his African heritage. He was interested in English poetry dealing with literary. He then traveled to Alabama and enrolled at the Tuskegee Institute, where he studied for two months before transferring to Kansas State College. In 1914 he left school entirely for New York City and worked various menial jobs. As in Kingston, McKay encountered racism in New York City, and that racism forced him to continue writing poetry. In 1917, under the pseudonym Eli Edwards, McKay published two poems in a journal called the Seven Arts. • 7. Analysis Of One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest By Ken Kesey Sigmund Freud was someone who turned clinical psychology on its head; therefore, it only makes sense that he would be an inspiration for someone who completely redefined literature. In the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest author Ken Kesey weaves an intricate, while subtextual, theme that mirrors concepts of Freudian psychology. About a decade after publication, in her article Kesey and Freud, former Northeastern University professor Ruth Sullivan analyzes the progression and impact of Kesey s use of Freudian psychology, most specifically, Kesey s use of Freud s Oedipus Complex as it pertains to the characters Nurse Ratched, R.P. McMurphy, and Chief Bromden. While it is true that McMurphy and Bromden represent the typical Freudian father son ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to an article titled The Oedipal Crisis, the main stages of the Oedipal Complex that deals with a mother are that, the first love object for [the son] is the mother, the young boy is threatened by the father s relationship with his mother, and the father is perceived as an enemy. (http://www.changingstates.co.uk/freud.html). Nurse Ratched never fulfills any of those roles; in fact, she is seen as the clear enemy the whole entire book. The enemy is never McMurphy; instead, Nurse Ratched is described as the root of all the trouble here (Kesey, 185). Ratched and McMurphy s relationship is not sexual and the men on the ward are never envious of McMurphy for his relationship with Nurse Ratched. Instead, Nurse Ratched is seen as a woman who McMurphy describes as a ball cutter (Kesey, 60) Nurse Ratched is not someone who is seen as appealing or attractive or warm like a Freudian mother, rather, she is a woman that makes a man powerless and asexual. Freud s Oedipal triangle is clearly missing one point because the Big Nurse does not fulfill the concept of a Freudian mother. That is where Sullivan s analysis falls ... • 9. Pros And Cons Of Semi-Automatic Transmission DISCUSSION In past years, transmission includes the right angle drives and other gearing in windmills, horse powered devices and steam engines that supports pumping, milling and hoisting. This has been modified in most modern gearboxes that are being used to increase the rotation while reducing the speeding like in a motor crank which is an arm attached at the right angles to the rotating tube. It is used to convert circular motion. The decrease in speed produces a mechanical advantage, increasing rotation or force. Let us discuss one of the common vehicle being used by common people before this study discuss the motor vehicles with different transmission. The most basic one that uses human powered turn or move is of course the bicycle. A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mostly drivers wonder how a semi automatic vehicle can be operated. This is actually a hybrid form of transmission. When it is said to be hybrid, it is a mixture of manual and automatic transmission where an integrated control system handles manipulation of the clutch automatically, but the driver can still and could take manual control of gear selection. Based on the research made, semi automatic transmission is sometimes called a clutch less manual , or automated manual transmission. Mostly of this transmission, the driver is allowed to fully delegate gear shifting choice to the control system which acts as like it was regular automatic transmission. Semi Automatic Transmission or SAT does not change gears automatically, but rather helps manual gear changes by giving out the need to press a clutch pedal at the same time as changing gears. It uses electronic sensors, pneumatics, processors and actuators to shift gear on input from the driver or by a computer. SAT is designed to provide a better driving experience through fast overtaking vehicles on highways. Some motorcycles also use a system with a typical gear change but without the need for manual clutch operation. Semi automatic transmissions have also made their way into the truck and bus market in the early ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Dynamic Character Of Ophelia In Shakespeare s Hamlet The character of Ophelia in Shakespeare s Hamlet is a dynamic character often overlooked by most readers. At first glance, she is displayed as weak and easily manipulated, shown by her suicide in the play. However, when her character is looked into with more depth, she comes off as a character who is strong and independent and made the choice to kill herself with a purpose. Hamlet is a revenge tragedy, but Hamlet isn t the only character who seeks revenge. Ophelia chooses to kill herself not out of sorrow, but out of revenge against her father and Hamlet. Ophelia s father was portrayed as a man who tried to have control over his daughter s life and the choices she makes. In Ophelia s first scene, Polonius and her brother Laertes, are talking to Ophelia about her virtue Tender yourself more dearly/ Or not to crack the wind of the poor phrase,/ Running it thus you ll tender me a fool (1.3.113 115). Polonius is lecturing Ophelia on the matter of her virtue, and how it is sacred to her. It is something that she must keep safe at all costs and not fall to the whims of Hamlet. Investors do not like to see this and so inevitable just as quickly as the figures were announced, their shares plummeted: from 14p to £10.54 (Fletcher, 2010). It s clear the company needs to sort this issue out and develop a strategy that will enable them to make profits in all the markets they are in. The question that needs to be asked is: Why is our strategy working in Africa and Asia but not in Europe and North America? In 2009 Diageo announced that it was to reduce its work force in the Glasgow and Kilmarnock plants in Scotland by 900 workers. The company faced wide spread criticism from both the Scottish government and trade unions for their refusal to negotiate or adopt a compromise suggested by the Scottish government, which could have saved at least some of these workers jobs. Considering the brand had been linked to Kilmarnock for almost two centuries and most workers had been working in the plants for generations, the way in which they were treated by the company, was abominable. (Maddox 2009) This event however, highlighted a weakness between the workforce and the managers of the company which could be the source of many problems in future. If workers in other plants, as result of the Kilmarnock/Glasgow incident assume that the company views them as disposable labour, not only could the company land themselves a demotivated workforce; which in turn could lead to shirking ... • 15. Geoffrey Chaucer s Primary Sources Geoffrey Chaucer formed the incomplete work, The Canterbury Stories. It is seen as extraordinary compared to other effortless works in English. Essayist Geoffrey Chaucer was considered around 1340 in London, Britain. In 1357 he transformed into an open worker to Royal lady Elizabeth of Ulster and continued in that farthest point with the English court every through hey lifetime. Craftsman Geoffrey Chaucer was considered around 1340, more likely than not at his people s home on Thames Road in London, Britain. Chaucer s family was of the working class, slipped from a well to do family who benefitted in the London wine trade. As demonstrated by a couple of sources, Chaucer s father, John, carried on the family wine business. Geoffrey Chaucer is acknowledged to have gone to the St. Paul s Church School, where he probably first wound up evidently comfortable with the intense composed work of Virgil and Ovid. Throughout the period, Chaucer transformed into an open specialist to Royal lady Elizabeth of Ulster, the Duke of Clarence s life partner, for which he was paid a little stipend enough to pay for his food and clothing. • 16. Fountainhead Essay Outline Ayn Rand, the author of the book Fountainhead, had very strong and insightful beliefs. One such belief, as quoted by Ayn Rand, pertains to the idea of people that do not follow trends. She believes that throughout history there have been people that decided to step off of the path that everyone was on, in order to create their vision that no one has had before. The second someone does something different many people start to think they are crazy and do not think their ideas are practical. Although the inventors face much opposition, they still manage to come out on top. Rand mentions how even though they were not liked, they still came out on top. J.K. Rowling s books were not liked at first, but eventually they became one of the best selling book series and she came out on top. Another individual that fits Ayn Rand s quote is Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus is known for a lot of things, especially her being a disney star. At the beginning of her career, she starred on Hannah Montana, a disney channel tv show, and was a popstar as both Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus. Because of Disney Channel s reputation of being mostly a kids tv channel, Miley Cyrus was seen as a kids actor and singer. As she got older, she began to star in movies for teenagers, such as The Last Song, and started to sign more edgy songs. Many people continued to love her not only as an actor, but as a singer too. • 17. Justice, The Necession Of Justice In Ovid s Metamorphosis Justice, what is justice? Is justice the administration of law, a way to punish the wrong, create an example for the spectators? Yes, Indeed, by definition justice is the administration of law, it is to push the wrongdoers according to laws. However, in Ovid s Metamorphosis, justice is not just at all. Females are given a harsher punishment than males. Demigods are punished while other gods are not. In Metamorphosis justice is controlled by the superior (the gods), while the inferior (mortals) are always punished whether they committed a crime or not. For example, the story of Io, she was a fair nymph who caught the eye of Jupiter (Zeus), and was punished for many days. This story is one of the many that Ovid writes about in Metamorphosis, where a human or female was punished without fault. When people think of justice, they think of an image of scale carried by a blind women, believing justice to be blind. However in Ovid s Metamorphosis, justice is not blind. As I stated earlier, the story of Io, a fair nymph who caught the eye of Jupiter, was raped by Jupiter and then turned into a cow because Jupiter had taken an interest in her. When Ovid writes, Juno... blazing with anger... she wasted no time in venting her fury by sending a horrible demon to frighten the eyes of Io... a goading terror was planted deep in her heart, which hounded her over the world in flight... the groans that she uttered, the tears that she shed... pleading... to grant her the end to her suffering... he is describing the pain of Io, but she was at no fault. Jupiter should have been punished for not being loyal to juno, but he was not punished, a human, a female that had no fault was. Another story that Ovid mentions in Metamorphosis is the story of Myrrha, another female punished severely for breaking the laws of society. Myrrha was the daughter of Cinyras, a king. Hundreds of suitors came to fight for her hand, but she was in love with her own father. The fathered welcomed his flesh and blood to the bed of uncleanness... filled with her father s unhallowed seed... bearing the fruit of her monstrous crime in her impious womb.., describes the crime Myrrah commits. For many years and by many Americans the Battle of Little BigHorn was looked at as a valiant effort by brave Americans to fight for what they believed in under a well organized and successful commanding officer. Through the accounts in this book, Philbrick shows us this was not necessarily the case. Custer and his men went into the battle extremely too overconfident and he seriously underestimated the power of his opposing army. This overconfidence caused a great lack of proper preparation for the battle by the US army which ultimately helped lead to their demise in this battle. Other factors that contributed to this loss were the facts that Custer did not have such great command over some of his officers. Several of them purposely disobeyed orders and acted upon their own whims. One officer in particular, Sargent Reno, showed up to the battle drunk and was seen drinking from a flask of amber liquid. The confusion, disorder and underestimation of the enemy all lead to the chaos and massacre that ensued on Custer and his men. The fight between Custer s men and the indians proved to be a rout, a panic till the last man was killed. • 27. Foreshadowing In Of Mice And Men Analysis The novel Of Mice and Men uses foreshadowing successfully to build tension towards the final tragedy. Foreshadowing is shown consistently throughout the novel in various ways including; the introduction of Curley s wife, Lennie s constant unawareness of his own strength, and Candy s dog being killed. These situations and scenes build towards the final tragedy of the novel effectively. Throughout the novel, Lennie is shown to love and care for various animals and people, however in each instance Lennie is shown to be unaware of his own strength, and inadvertently hurts the things he loves. This builds towards the final tragedy in the novel, as Lennie unintentionally kills Curley s wife, leading to George and Lennie s worst fears to be fulfilled. This is also shown through George s constant precautions and his fear is stemming from what Lennie was accused of in Weed. This also foreshadows that the ending is going to be tragic as George is constantly thinking of the worst case scenario. The first example of Lennie s unawareness of his own strength happens at the beginning of the novel, as it is revealed that he had killed a mouse. George seeing this as a stepping stone to what will happen explodes saying you always kill em (Of Mice and Men Steinbeck. Government Aid And Assistance During The United States Government aid/assistance, or as others may know it, welfare, was created in order to provide assistance and aid to those in the community that may be unemployed or in need of assistance due to a lack of income for both individuals as well as families. In the beginning it was the federal government that managed the assistance program but that was only until the government assistance reform took place, which sent the jurisdiction back down to the states. There was a strong urge from the American citizens to reform the system due to the fact that many Americans believed that the government assistance program was being abused by those utilizing the program. • 33. The Impact Of Media On The Media Industry Over all this documentary made me feel very defeated and overwhelmed. Possibly it is just my mood tonight, but it is clear that a few really wealthy companies run the media in the United States. There has been a decline in small ownership media companies similar to Independent Lens in recent years. This decline correlates with the Telecommunication Act of 1996 that ended most ownership restrictions (Campbell, Martin, Fabos, 2014, p. 224). It was thought that this deregulation would encourage competition in the media market place, instead it had the opposite effect and created large media conglomerates. Cooperation s like Time Warner, Disney, and individuals like Rupert Murdoc own multiple media outlets making it very difficult for other smaller media outlets to afford to advertise enough to stay in business. Rather than competing, many of these companies hold joint venture investments and it is not in their best interest to compete with each other. Deregulations in the industry has allowed these monopolies to become very powerful limiting the impact of the FCC (Rich Media, Poor Democracy, n.d.). The film points out that investigative Journalism has been in a steady decline since 1996. Now that cooperation s own the news stations it is more about profits rather than true investigative reporting that costs much more than the fluff reporting or getting your news off the wire. Never truly aware of what time I fell asleep, whether I dreamt every night, or the quality of my sleep. All I knew was that the older I got, the more lethargic I got, and the more caffeine I consumed. Now given the opportunity to monitor my sleep for five nights with the use of a sleep diary I have better knowledge of my sleep patterns. Basing my sleep patterns on concepts learned in class, I was able to understand my sleep, and apply different issues I experienced each night to the resolutions I learned. Hopefully, after my sleep diary I will know how to improve my quality of sleep on a regular basis based on concepts learned in class. Let s face it, my name is not a common everyday name, so I was terrified until I recalled hypnagogic hallucination. Hypnagogic hallucinations occur at the onset of sleep (NREM) as the small, fast beta brain waves turn into large slower alpha brain waves (140). I will also do this twice one in a small beaker and once in a larger beaker. I will investigate also if I use more water will this affect the heat loss. If I use more water will this hold insulate the water more? So overall I will have four sets of results. Factors of the experiment ========================= In this experiment there are many different factors that could affect my experiment and the results I achieve, the factors are: The amount of water used in each experiment If I use a large of amount of water this will mean that the water will cool down slower and therefore stay warmer for longer. So the more water I use the longer the water will stay warm, so if I use a small amount of water it will cool down quick. Type of Insulation I will use This will change the amount of heat loss significantly. Different types of material insulate differently depending on how efficiently the material
