self-esteem
Bellahcen Abderrahim
What is self-esteem?
A person’s overall emotional evaluation
of his or her own worth. It is a
judgment of oneself as well as an
attitude toward the self.
What is he difference between self
esteem and self confidence?
Essentially self-confidence, is what you
think of your abilities (what you can
do) and self-esteem is what you think
of yourself as a person (who you are).
For example: You may know that you are
really smart (self esteem). Then you go to take a
verbal exam. All the sudden, you feel nervous
and start to sweat. You begin to doubt that you
will pass the test. You still know you are smart,
but you doubt your ability to communicate that
to others. Therefore you lack self-confidence.
How is self-esteem related to mental
health?
Holding negative beliefs about yourself
lowers your ability to cope with the
stresses of life. This can place you at a
higher risk of developing mental health
problems such as eating disorders,
depression or social phobia, which are
closely related to your mood and self-
belief.
What causes low self-esteem?
*Being subject to emotional or physical abuse.
*Physical and emotional needs neglected in childhood.
*Failing to meet the expectations of your parents.
*Feeling like the 'odd one out' at school.
*Coming from a community which often experiences
prejudice, such as being poor but living in a wealthy
neighborhood.
*Pressure to conform to social norms which you don't agree
with.
*Excessive pressures at work.
*Physical ill-health and its impact on your quality of life.
*Bereavement.
*Being unemployed.
*Social isolation and loneliness.
What are the consequences of low
self-esteem?
The impact of low self-esteem on your life can be
significant, you may find that all areas of your life are
affected in some way and confirm your core belief
that you are of little value.
Personal relationships
- You find that you form damaging relationships.
- You may feel you don't deserve to be treated
with love and respect.
- You allow friends or partners to take
advantage of you or control you.
Social life
- Very difficult to hear criticism.
- Overly sensitive and upset very easily.
- You stay away from activities that can expose
you to any type of judgment.
- Become isolated and frustrated.
Negative behaviors
- You behave in ways that are damaging to you
and those around you.
- You try to escape from life and engage in risky
behavior like taking drugs.
- You might develop an aggressive personality to
try to hide your vulnerabilities and protect
yourself from further damage.
At Work:
- Avoiding tasks that you don't feel confident
about or trying to produce work which is
perfect.
- You find it difficult to complete applications or
go to interviews as you do not believe you are
good enough.
What can I do to build my self-
esteem?
1.Stop comparing yourself to other people.
2. Don’t put yourself down.
3. Get into the habit of thinking and saying positive
things about yourself to yourself.
4. Accept compliments.
5. change your beliefs.
6. Spend time with positive supportive people.
7. Acknowledge your positive qualities and things you are
good at.
8. Be assertive, don’t allow people to treat you with a lack of
respect.
9. Be helpful and considerate to others.
10. Engage in work and hobbies that you enjoy.
Self esteem in the field of teaching
It is not acceptable for teachers to display
cold feet and symptoms of nervousness
when facing a new class, or to be
softhearted and timid.
So, a teacher with a high self esteem is the
most important building block in the field
of education.
Causes & Symptoms of low self-esteem
*limited teaching experience.
*Fear of forgetting the lesson or lecture.
*Anticipation of being seen as dumb when asked a smart
question.
*Finding themselves unable to face the little challengers in a
classroom.
*Overwhelmed by their students’ behavior.
*A teacher from modest origins may not feel ease at a school
frequented by pupils of affluent backgrounds .
*Stammer or stagger may invite spontaneous giggles on the
first encounter with the students.
Remedies:
-Identify the nervousness or possible self
esteem-related issues.
-Seek guidance from a senior peer.
-Prepare before entering the class.
- Deliver your course matter in an
interesting manner.
-Master your body language.
Thank you.
love and respect
yourself.

self esteem

  • 3. A person’s overall emotional evaluation of his or her own worth. It is a judgment of oneself as well as an attitude toward the self.
  • 4. What is he difference between self esteem and self confidence?
  • 5. Essentially self-confidence, is what you think of your abilities (what you can do) and self-esteem is what you think of yourself as a person (who you are).
  • 6. For example: You may know that you are really smart (self esteem). Then you go to take a verbal exam. All the sudden, you feel nervous and start to sweat. You begin to doubt that you will pass the test. You still know you are smart, but you doubt your ability to communicate that to others. Therefore you lack self-confidence.
  • 7. How is self-esteem related to mental health?
  • 8. Holding negative beliefs about yourself lowers your ability to cope with the stresses of life. This can place you at a higher risk of developing mental health problems such as eating disorders, depression or social phobia, which are closely related to your mood and self- belief.
  • 9. What causes low self-esteem?
  • 10. *Being subject to emotional or physical abuse. *Physical and emotional needs neglected in childhood. *Failing to meet the expectations of your parents. *Feeling like the 'odd one out' at school. *Coming from a community which often experiences prejudice, such as being poor but living in a wealthy neighborhood. *Pressure to conform to social norms which you don't agree with. *Excessive pressures at work. *Physical ill-health and its impact on your quality of life. *Bereavement. *Being unemployed. *Social isolation and loneliness.
  • 11. What are the consequences of low self-esteem? The impact of low self-esteem on your life can be significant, you may find that all areas of your life are affected in some way and confirm your core belief that you are of little value.
  • 12. Personal relationships - You find that you form damaging relationships. - You may feel you don't deserve to be treated with love and respect. - You allow friends or partners to take advantage of you or control you.
  • 13. Social life - Very difficult to hear criticism. - Overly sensitive and upset very easily. - You stay away from activities that can expose you to any type of judgment. - Become isolated and frustrated.
  • 14. Negative behaviors - You behave in ways that are damaging to you and those around you. - You try to escape from life and engage in risky behavior like taking drugs. - You might develop an aggressive personality to try to hide your vulnerabilities and protect yourself from further damage.
  • 15. At Work: - Avoiding tasks that you don't feel confident about or trying to produce work which is perfect. - You find it difficult to complete applications or go to interviews as you do not believe you are good enough.
  • 16. What can I do to build my self- esteem?
  • 17. 1.Stop comparing yourself to other people. 2. Don’t put yourself down. 3. Get into the habit of thinking and saying positive things about yourself to yourself. 4. Accept compliments. 5. change your beliefs. 6. Spend time with positive supportive people. 7. Acknowledge your positive qualities and things you are good at. 8. Be assertive, don’t allow people to treat you with a lack of respect. 9. Be helpful and considerate to others. 10. Engage in work and hobbies that you enjoy.
  • 18. Self esteem in the field of teaching
  • 19. It is not acceptable for teachers to display cold feet and symptoms of nervousness when facing a new class, or to be softhearted and timid. So, a teacher with a high self esteem is the most important building block in the field of education.
  • 20.
