In positive psychology, flow, also known as the zone, is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by complete absorption in what one does, and a resulting loss in one's sense of space and time.
This presentation was designed as a tool for an adult learning course on Positive Psychology and increasing your levels of happiness at the University of Guelph-Humber.
This presentation looks at the latest research on positive psychology based on "The Science of Happiness" course offered by University of California, Berkeley.
It provides helpful tips on how to create a happier and more meaningful life. Some of the main topics are "social connections", "compassion", "forgiveness" and "mindfulness".
This presentation is a part of my motivational speech to inspire people to live a meaningful and fulfilling lives aligned with their core values.

Defecation
Normal defecation begins with movement in the left colon, moving stool toward the anus. When stool reaches the rectum, the distention causes relaxation of the internal sphincter and an awareness of the need to defecate. At the time of defecation, the external sphincter relaxes, and abdominal muscles contract, increasing intrarectal pressure and forcing the stool out
The Valsalva maneuver exerts pressure to expel faeces through a voluntary contraction of the abdominal muscles while maintaining forced expiration against a closed airway. Patients with cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, increased intracranial pressure, or a new surgical wound are at greater risk for cardiac dysrhythmias and elevated blood pressure with the Valsalva maneuver and need to avoid straining to pass the stool.
Normal defecation is painless, resulting in passage of soft, formed stool
CONSTIPATION
Constipation is a symptom, not a disease. Improper diet, reduced fluid intake, lack of exercise, and certain medications can cause constipation. For example, patients receiving opiates for pain after surgery often require a stool softener or laxative to prevent constipation. The signs of constipation include infrequent bowel movements (less than every 3 days), difficulty passing stools, excessive straining, inability to defecate at will, and hard feaces
IMPACTION
Fecal impaction results from unrelieved constipation. It is a collection of hardened feces wedged in the rectum that a person cannot expel. In cases of severe impaction the mass extends up into the sigmoid colon.
DIARRHEA
Diarrhea is an increase in the number of stools and the passage of liquid, unformed feces. It is associated with disorders affecting digestion, absorption, and secretion in the GI tract. Intestinal contents pass through the small and large intestine too quickly to allow for the usual absorption of fluid and nutrients. Irritation within the colon results in increased mucus secretion. As a result, feces become watery, and the patient is unable to control the urge to defecate. Normally an anal bag is safe and effective in long-term treatment of patients with fecal incontinence at home, in hospice, or in the hospital. Fecal incontinence is expensive and a potentially dangerous condition in terms of contamination and risk of skin ulceration
HEMORRHOIDS
Hemorrhoids are dilated, engorged veins in the lining of the rectum. They are either external or internal.
FLATULENCE
As gas accumulates in the lumen of the intestines, the bowel wall stretches and distends (flatulence). It is a common cause of abdominal fullness, pain, and cramping. Normally intestinal gas escapes through the mouth (belching) or the anus (passing of flatus)

6. OPTIMISM AND
HEALTH
Mental Health: Studies have found inverse relation between
optimism and depressive symptoms
Optimists are proved to have greater survival rate than pessimists
In a work environment, a positive association was observed
between optimism and performance
Physical health:
• Optimism and cardiac patients: In a survey it was found that
pessimists were three times more likely than optimists to have
heart attacks or require repeat angioplasties or bypass
operations.
• Optimism and blood pressure: An American study of 2,564
men and women who were 65 and older also found that
optimism is good for blood pressure
• Optimism and overall health: Optimism appears to protect the
heart and circulation
• Optimism and survival: The first American study evaluated 839
people in the early 1960s, performing a psychological test for
optimism & pessimism as well as a complete medical
evaluation. When the people were rechecked 30 years later,
optimism was linked to longevity; for every 10-point increase in
pessimism on the optimism–pessimism test, the mortality rate
rose 19%.

Emotions and infections: People with positive personality style
were less likely to develop viral symptoms than their less
positive peers.
7. HOW TO BECOME OPTIMISTIC?
1. Magnifying: Try to focus on magnifying what’s
good in the situation you are currently facing – it
can’t be all bad – right? In every situation we
can find the good aspects, maybe it’s a
challenge and once we are done with it we will
be more appreciative towards our lives .
2. Affirmation: Keep using positive affirmations on a
daily basis. Try writing down some of good things
in your life and say thank you for what you
already have.
3. Self-Talk: Once you start thinking about failure
and why you can’t do or have something you
must conflict yourself and convince yourself
logically why you can have it and support your
arguments with real life examples.
