Good Morning. I'm here to demonstrate how to search for reliable medical information in PubMed. This slide show will show you how to do a basic and advanced search. Our topic is: how does grapefruit interact with prescription drugs.

PubMed is a database of over 23 million article citations that is freely available to everyone. It is developed and maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the US National Library of Medicine (NLM) located at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). PubMed provides access to articles published in MedLine (also available at D'Amour Library). PubMed includes links to full-text articles.
Access PubMed through the D'Amour Library website and you will be linked to articles that are available through the library as well as those available through PubMed. You can also search PubMed directly.
PubMed searches by using Keywords. It uses boolean operator AND by default. You can enter your search terms into the basic search box by simply typing grapefruit drug interactions and PubMed will interpret that search as having the word AND between each word. If you want to use Boolean the terms must be in CAPS.
Grapefruit or grapefruit juice increases the absorption of prescription drugs. Too much of the medication stays in your system.
Enter your search terms in the search box of the home page of PubMed. Remember, only enter the words you want it to search. Do not enter an entire phrase like you may normally do in Google. You will be disappointed with the results.
Use autocomplete. PubMed will suggest search terms. Select the one that fits your topic.
Tips for making searching PubMed easier: Use autocomplete. Don't use Boolean. It will do it for you. Must be in caps if you do. Don't use truncation symbols like *.
You can use the Advanced Search Builder to build a search.
Search results are displayed in summary format: 20 per page, and sorted by most recently added. Title, authors, date, Language (if appropriate), vol./issue, pagination, doi, PubMed in process means MeSH terms have not been applied yet. Assigned a PMID.

Filters: are a way of refining your results. You can search by article types, text availability, and publication dates. You can limit to free full text available. Some link to publishers websites where they will want you to pay for the artilce, sometimes one article can cost $35. Remember to access PubMed through the D'Amour library link to get access to articles available through the library.
In general, in the medical and science fields you'll want to limit the publication to 5 years.
Filters are applied on all subsequest searches until cleared.
For access to full-text articles, use free full text filter on the left side of the screen. Articles are available for free through PubMed Central, as well as from the publisher. Also, remember to use the PubMed link through D’Amour library.
Click the title on the results page to see the abstract. The abstract and link to article are displayed on this page.
This article links to PubMed Central which contains free articles. You can read the whole article here or you can access the PDF.
In PubMed Central the references page shows links to other articles in PubMed. More resources!
Perhaps when you did your search you got a mind-boggling number of results. You can narrow your search by using the filters on the left. You can also add more keywords to be more specific.
If your search terms resulted in too few results, click related citations on the left side of the screen.
You can see how PubMed interprets your search terms by looking at the Search Details on the right side of the screen. PubMed uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms as well as Boolean operators to search. Click "see more" for more details.
You can save citations to the clipboard. Click send to: select clipboard. From here you can also email your articles.
