`` The Day They Tied Me Up ``
Sharon Olds was born in San Francisco on November 19, 1942. At age fifteen, she was sent to a
boarding school in Massachusetts. Many of her poems focus on difficult childhood and the body.
As Olivia Laing, literary critic of several literary novels and publications, says, The physical body
is a document of being, physical experience is the primary mode of forming, and physical contact
is the primary human relationship. Like Whitman, Olds celebrates the body in its pleasures and
pains. She is a contemporary poet who focuses on autobiographical poems mostly of sexual or
violent nature and personal experience. She particularly resonates with women readers and women
s connections with family members and lovers of the past and present through physical, sexual, and
emotional means. She writes frequently about her sadistic, alcoholic father and victimized mother.
Her dysfunctional family plays an enormous role in her poetry, especially in The Day They Tied
Me Up. This poem is inspired by true events and the feelings and emotions felt by the poet during
a memorable aspect of her childhood. When Olds was eight years old, she emptied a bottle of ink
onto her parents bedspread and was tied to a chair as punishment. In perceptionby Maurice Merleau
Ponty, a French philosopher commonly associated with the philosophical movement of
existentialism, he demonstrates Olds s serial return to the moment of this punishment within the
space of the lyric poem is a formal method for

Individualism And The American Dream
Why has our sense of community weakened? And who or what is to blame? My intent is to
answer these questions, and determine what can be done to fix the issue at hand. The above
mentioned communal crisis has affected our ability to connect with others, as well as our means to
be self sufficient. The concept of The American Dream is at fault for the decline of our social state,
particularly the basis of individualism and consumerism, both at which reinforce economic
inequality. The American Dream is seen as the opportunity to succeed and achieve upward mobility,
but in reality this dream has become a nightmare. The appearance of communityhas shifted more
towards a manifestation of social class, and with all things considered, we are indebted... Show

Consequently, the presents of an oligarchy has contributed to the diminishment of the middle
class, further dividing the rich from the poor. David Myers would say that this divide creates an
us versus them environment (105). Myers is a social psychologist who studied the diverging
effects of groups. He learned that we associate ourselves with groups to feel better about
ourselves (105). The downfall of in groups is that we tend to exclude and look down at outsiders.
Conforming within a group can be debilitating to social interactions, and tend to cause prejudices
towards other people (Myers 106). For the purposes of this paper, classism is the preconception
at hand. Classism is the intolerance of another social class; this bigotry is commonly practiced
against the poor. Most of the affluent members of the elite social class claim that those in poverty
are lazy and don t aspire to be successful; and because of these schemas, the elite find no use for
programs that essentially help the lower class survive. Bellah demonstrated

Nursing Code Of Ethics Case Study
My thoughts about the role of the professional nurse embrace many behaviors and attitudes that can
be recognize as belonging to any level nurse; accordingly, are depicted through our nursing code of
ethics. Nonetheless, these behaviors include the privilege and responsibility to care for those in
need with dignity and justice, regardless of ethnic background and or socioeconomic status. Hence,
respect, integrity, accountability, responsibility, modesty, and altruism, are all behaviors that serve
as a foundation for other behaviors that enhance the nurseability to provide quality, patient centered
care. However, with more education, comes an enhanced knowledge and better understanding of

The Positive And Negative Effects Of Anti-Smoking Campaigns
Did you know that almost 20% of adults in the United States smokes cigarettes? Cigarette smoke
contains around 4,800 chemicals, and 69 of these chemicals can cause cancer. The effects of using
tobacco are wide and varied, but all of them are dangerous to every user s health. Cigarette
smoking is the number one cause of death in the United States, and it is an easily reversible
statistic. All anti smokingads gives a choice on whether to smoke or not and there s a significant
percentage that still chooses to do so. Anti smoking campaigns can either promote or prevent
smoking and the negative bi products of smoke inhalation in various ways. This provides a
discussion of the negative and positive impacts of anti smoking ads. Anti smoking ads aren t as
effective as they should be, and most ads are just put in place to place that fear factor in the viewers.
Most times the campaign has to hit harder with facts instead of a graphic depiction of what
smoking leads too. The image is created to get a reaction out of the audience. Whether its
smokers or non smokers, the point is to convey to the dangerous of smoking. The ad will either
increase the distaste of smoking and its negative effects or they will be brushed off because it has
or is little effect on them or their everyday life. It is not always safe to say that because the ad is
good it will lead the people that do smoke to stop.
To them it may remind them that yes, they are harming their bodies but at the end of the day

Old Spice Advertising
. The target audience of the Old Spice advertisement are older men with significant others who need
a good scent.
2. Detail one: I think this is the targeted audience because he speaks to the audience saying that
you (speaking to males) could smell like me if you stop using the lady scented body wash. Saying
to other men, stop smelling like a girl and instead use Old Spice and smell like a man. Detail two:
At the end of the video there is a phrase on the screen that reads, smell like a man, man. This
clearly states the targeted audience because he is saying to all the men out there to smell like a
man and be like me. He also says, anything is possible when you re man smells like a man and not
a lady. This phrase gives the man fear of his masculinity if he uses lady scented body wash.

The visual picture created in the Old Spice ad included getting out of the shower to the
expensive boat, and then to a beach on a horse. Getting out of the shower represents reality, and
getting out of the shower can apply to everyone. Then going to the beach and being on a boat
can represent paradise and this may give the product more appeal with this type of a background
rather than a non aesthetically pleasing background. The props that are used in this visual include
a towel, diamonds, clam with tickets inside, and the Old Spice product. The props used in the
advertisement are all fresh, and clean and new. These items in a new condition suggest that using
this body wash will make you smell as new as the products. The social meaning that we associate
with these ritzy props include wealth, paradise, and cleanliness. The horse resembles being
majestic and the background of being in paradise resembles serenity, peace and

Deadpool Film Analysis
Chimichangas
You re probably thinking, My boyfriend said this was a superhero movie but that guy in the suit
just turned that other guy into a fucking kabab! Well, I may be super, but I m no hero . This quote
from the original Deadpool movie is a perfect description of the movie because Deadpool is not the
typical fun loving superhero that viewers would expect to see in a superhero film. If the viewer is
familiar with the original Deadpool, they know that Deadpool or Wade Wilson doesn t care
about the typical things that other superheroes care about. Deadpool plays by his own rules by
fighting crime effectively with a mirage of dirty jokes and references to chimichangas. Based on
the comedy and pace of the trailer for Deadpool 2, it doesn t look like Wade Wilson hasn t lost a
beat when it comes to his charisma for comedy. The excellent trailer for the upcoming comedy
/action film lures viewers in by providing references to other movies as well as showcasing the
comedic attributes of the main character.
In just the first fifty seconds there s a reference to another movie as Deadpool rushes into a phone
booth to change into his costume so he can save an old man in danger. A viewer can get a sense
that Deadpool is sort of making fun of the classic superhero scene that one would see in a superman
movie. One can further conclude this idea by the way Deadpool goes about doing it: he takes 1:30
out the trailer fumbling around getting dressed all while yelling multiple

Diffusion And Osmosis
Why is diffusion and osmosis important and what were the reasons of the experiments performed?
Osmosis helps keep the water levels in cells at homeostasis and diffusion tries to reach equilibrium
by moving to an area of lower concentration. The two experiments were designed and performed to
test the rate of diffusionby measuring the size of the phenolphthalein agar block and the weight of
the dialysis tubes. To begin with, the experiments, The Rate of Diffusion and Cell Size, was to test
whether the rate of diffusion was affected by the volume and surface area. It was hypothesized that
the volume and surface area of the phenolphthalein agar block and the dialysis tubing will have
affect on the rate of diffusion. The first test was the phenolphthalein agar cube which was
submerged into hydrochloric acid for a total of ten minutes along with other solutions tested in the
dialysis tubing.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After analyzing the results of the data the rate of diffusion for the dialysis tubing and the block
showed evidence of how a cell s membrane functions. Nevertheless, after further examination I was
able to determine that diffusion rate does depend on the magnitude of volume or surface area. I
learned that what caused the smaller 1 cm cube to become clear at a much faster rate depended on
the concentration of the hydrochloric acid. In other words if the proportion of the agar cube
increased the concentration of the hydrochloric acid got diluted and therefore became less
effective. As a result, the agar cube was exposed to the strongest concentration of acid therefore
became clear at a faster rate. For future research it would be useful to measure the concentration of
the hydrochloric

The Empty Nest And Its Effect On Marriage Quality
The Empty Nest and its Effect on Marriage Quality An empty nest is described by a household
where all children have left to venture on their own paths and leave the home permanently.
Children leave the household for reasons such as school, work, or the union of their own marriage.
When the act of children leaving the home happens, sometimes ENS occurs to the parents. ENS is
a feeling of loneliness and sadness when children are no longer around in the home. Empty Nest
Syndrome(ENS) results in losing a connection with one s children and resulting in a feeling of
loss on the parent s side. Many people have reported having ENS when kids leaving the home, yet
many others report that when children leave the home there is an increase in their quality of
marriage. According to Gratton and Gutmann (2010) changes in the family household have
changed ever since World War II. Fertility rates and young people moving out on their own has
severely decreased household size (Gratton Gutmann, 2010). Empty nest households have become a
dominant living arrangement in the 21st century. Nagy and Theiss (2013) reported finding in past
research that an empty nest did increase marital satisfaction and greater happiness. Nagy and Theiss
also reported that research has shown that an empty nest has also been correlated with decreasing
marital satisfaction as well. Since there has been such an increase in an empty nest household,
research in this particular area has become of importance

Essay on Compound Pharmacies Manufacturing Lethal Injections
An ethical issue is an issue in which there is no clear right or wrong decision, these types of
decisions are constantly faced in professional workplace. Here one must weight both the benefits
and the consequences of taking the action. These could range from breaking confidentiality to the
morality of the death penalty. In September of 2012, a New England compound pharmacy was
linked to a fungal meningitis outbreak. It was here where methylprednisolone acetate injections
(used to treat arthritis and joint pain) were manufactured and tainted. This injection was distributed
throughout the country, given to many people, who then became ill. After this compound

The person who was to be executed could then be living with a life long impairment. Then the
state would most likely not try to execute the man again, leaving him to suffer for the rest of his
life. I personally believe that Natural Rights do not cover the killing of someone unless it s
justified. These would include self defense, proper execution of a proven guilty individual,
among other reasons. The Natural Rights Theory would suggest that this person this person has
the right to not suffer when being executed. Even though the likelihood of this person suffering
is low, the chance is still there. Even if one person out of a million suffers even if just temporary,
then the Natural Rights Theory says this is not acceptable. This would have to be something that
Governor Nixon would have to consider. Would he want to be held responsible to allowing a
drug with an unknown background that isn t FDA regulated into his state? This would surely be
a decision that would take deep thought. Even though this is an issue that seems to have no clear
cut answers, I personally believe that Governor Nixon should error on the side of caution on this
case. Granting the say of execution seems to be the best possible option here until other options
could be explored more. A more viable option would be to create a

Villains in Hollywood Films Essay
Villains in Hollywood Films
Alfred Hitchcock once said The better the villain, the better the film and this year s Hollywood
filmmakers have abided by this golden rule as there was no stopping this year s summer
blockbusters from having a whole horde of villainous characters spreading their wings onto the
big screen, making the darker side more appealing for audiences. Everybody has gone villain this

How Jaws devoured its way to being Hollywood s first summer blockbuster villain.
Over the years the villain has had to move with the times, but there was one villain created that
made history for he not only devoured his way, sweeping away other villains that were ruling
over the box office, but paved the term summer movie blockbuster . That villain would be Jaws.
Back in 1975 Jaws was a phenomenon upon release, but it was, first and foremost, an exemplary
piece of suspenseful storytelling by a young talented Steven Spielberg, who would later become
Hollywood s most commercial film director. Darth Vader in Star Wars, two years later, might
have provided the evolutionary conclusion of the summer movie villain as a multimedia
marketing event complete with action figures in every toy shop but it was Steven Spielberg s sea
predator that proved to be a quantum leap, marketing wise. Even the movie poster was deadly
scary to look at: the image of a female swimmer enjoying the sunny afternoon out at sea with the
threatening primal beast in the background became immediately a classic. So has John William s

Identification And Identification Of Fingerprints
Exactly how unique are fingerprints ?
Background
Fingerprint classification was first introduced by Jan Evangelista Purkinje in 1823 as described in
the article Clinics to Dermatology. Fingerprints have since been used in the forensic science world
as an accepted tool in criminology and used for the identification of people. Fingerprints was built
on the theory that all fingerprints are unique, no two are alike. Thus fingerprints are considered a
type of individual evidence, evidence that can pinpoint a specific person Purkinje, a Czech
physiologist, divided the lines found in a fingerprint into nine types, each based on their geometric

A fingerprint is defined by Mark R Hawthorne in Fingerprints: Analysis and understanding as the
impression or reproduction left on any material by the friction skin of the fingers, Most often we

when discussing fingerprints which refers to the major features of a fingerprint, using which
comparisons of one print with another can be made.
Fingerprint Database
When forensic scientists look at fingerprints there is no set number as to exactly how many
characteristics of a fingerprints, or it s minutiae they have to look at. Currently the FBI

Rhetorical Analysis Obama Speech
Language of a Public Figure The opening of the speech is very clear and direct, setting a serious
essence for the audience to appreciate the detailed fashion in which Obama will go on to explain
the effects of Osama Bin Laden, America s actions, the assassination, and the important
distinguishing of Islam and Pakistan from Al Qaeda. Obama is very profound for his use of
emotive language; in this speech, he exemplifies this immediately. His use of antitheses opens
with, a bright September day was darkened . He then goes on to take the spectators back to the
tragic day of 9/11. He says, Hijacked planes cutting through a cloudless September sky, the Twin

He raises his voice with hints of anger when explaining how Al Qaeda was committed to killing
innocents . This raises the antagonism of the viewing population as well, setting the mood just
right for them to accept the justifying the war. Barrack Obama later adds that they, removed the
Taliban Government which seemingly suggests the Americans did what they did nicely, as
opposed to killing and torturing many of them, which they probably did. Obama then attempts to
give good reason for his point, again, by adding that the Taliban Government had given safe
haven and support to Al Qaeda. This justification convinces the American population that what
their army was doing necessary as well as peaceful. When elucidating the assassination, Obama
is sure to assert his role in affairs. This is initially made obvious when he switches from his
habitual collective pronouns to speaking in first person. He opens with, I determined and then at
my direction . This intentional change has the purpose of soaking up all the credit, indenting his
mark in the history of the USA. He goes on to explain how it was the most significant

out to be very significant for the re election in 2012. The use of the words, bring him to justice and

The Global Economy Has Become Large Size, Breadth And...
The global economy has become massive in size, breadth and diversity. There are enormous
opportunities but they are also fraught with complexity. The interconnectedness between fast
growing and mature regions has vastly increased the complexity, number and range of stakeholder
relationships that must be managed. Business complexityis increasing every day. Although
initiating a business is easier than a decade ago, sustaining and growing a business is more
difficult than ever. When you consider the last decades leading organizations, some of them have

When you reduce complexity, you increase your ability to implement new solutions, says AndrГ©

more easily. Today, all CIOs are standing in the path of a fire hose spewing complexity. And many
are getting soaked.
Within IT, factors that increase complexity include outsourcing management, the adoption of Web

technology architectures and governance for those workforces, and ensuring security in a
distributed environment. Outside of IT s direct control, complexity is increased by the
requirements of compliance, the need to support global business, and the speed and depth of
access to information demanded by your customers and your partners. Companies can with
difficulty handle these challenges individually, one at a time. But in the real world companies face
many, if not all, of these challenges, all at once, over and over. That s why you need a strategy to

They are vivid and clear, with the full force and impact of normal perceptions, and not under
voluntary control. Hallucinations include auditory voices telling them to do things or warning them
about something. Some patients report feeling like their arms or legs feel foreign. Another reported
experience of distortions of oneself is feeling one s body as an object rather than an inhabited aspect
of selfhood, thinking others can read their thoughts or their thoughts are being spoken out loud.
Sometimes unrelated words are linked together, for example, hamburger mountain time sleep,
which is part of the incoherent speech. Emotional distortions could cause one to laugh when a
friend dies or have other inappropriate emotional responses to situations. Many sufferers of
schizophrenia are not aware of their illness altogether. This is known as anosognosia or no disease
knowledge in Greek. There are also negative symptoms which account for a portion of the morbidity
of the disease. Two negative symptoms are particularly prominent in schizophrenia: diminished
emotional expression and avolition. Diminished emotional expression includes reductions in the
expression of emotions in the face, eye contact, intonation of speech (prosody), and movements of

Yertle the Turtle in the book Yertle the Turtle by Dr.Seuss was very greedy. He always wanted
more and more, in this case turtles so he could be the as it states in the book: I m ruler said
Yertle, of all that I see. To see more, he needed something to stack up with, and one resource he
had available to stack up with were turtles. Another reason he was greedy was when he said in
the book: My throne shall be higher! his royal voice thundered, So pile up more turtles! I want

One is that being greedy will lead to bad things. The second one is that other people have lives as
well and need to do certain things to live a healthy life. At the end of the story somebody else
was sitting on the rock, so it might of been either Mack or somebody else. If that means
somebody else is the king, then that means that sometimes bad decisions can lead to somebody
else s good or just plain bad with it just going away. When Yertle saw the moon and wanted to
stack up even higher, I actually thought he was going to go to outer space and then lift off into
the void. The book was very easy to understand as for one, it was a book not really meant for our
age group, and for two, that lots of the words rhymed and it made it flow. Thirdly is that the
reader, Mrs.Harrits read very fluently, also she spoke loudly so everybody could understand.
Yertle became the king of lots of things. Those include: Sala ma Sond pond, cow, mule, house,
blueberry bush and a cat. These were stated when it was said in the book: All mine! Yertle cried.

The Theory Of Laughter And Humor
On average, how many times a day does the average person laugh? The internet informs us that
the average adult laughs seventeen times a day. While laughing is quite common, have you
ever considered the factors behind laughter? Three theorists Hobbes, Freud, and Bergson
evaluate the subject of laughter and humor. In the first few paragraphs of Hobbes passage, he
discusses how people degrade those they dislike. He then explains how humans desire to rise
above others so they feel superior, making his theory known as the superiority theory. Hobbes
believes that by human nature, witty jokes does not always produce laughter; laughter can be
evoked by misfortunes or obscenities. The essence of superiority then becomes apparent.
Hobbes reveals laughter as hierarchical. Laughter is aroused when others have different
intellectual or social statuses. Due to the fact that men yearn to feel higher in their rank, men
dislike to be laughed at; Hobbes states, [it is no wonder therefore that men take heinously to be
laughed at or derided, that is, triumphed over] (66). An example that supports Hobbes superiority
claim is the popular phrase ain t nobody got time for that. This phrase originated from a video of
a woman, Sweet Brown, whose house burned down. This video evokes laughter because the lady
comes from a lower class home and is now homeless due to the fire; hence, people feel that she is
inferior to them. In addition, Sweet Brown talks in an uneducated way; this leads

Piaget Of The Infant Cognitive Development Essay
Background
In the context of infant cognitive development and its corresponding theories, Jean Piaget often
serves as a key theorist. Often referred to with the metaphor of children as explorers, Piaget believed
that children, from the moment of birth, are actively engaging with and exploring their surrounding
environment. With his contributions to the psychological field, like his six stages of sensorimotor
development, we grasp a better understanding of a child s first encounters developmentally. One of
his most important accounts was on the concept of object permanence. He was able to provide a
look into infants understanding of the physical world (DeHart, Sroufe, Cooper, p. 168). In order to
better understand his account on object permanence however, one must be aware of his six stages
of sensorimotor development: Reflexes, Primary Circular Reactions, Secondary Circular Reactions,
Coordination of Schemes, Tertiary Circular Reactions, and Beginnings of Representational
Thought, which were largely influence through his experiments with his own children. The first
stage, Reflexes, occurs from birth to 1 month. During this stage, Piaget asserted, infants are limited
to their biological, programmed reflexes. He uses the term reflex in a much more broad sense in
that he refers it as ... any built in behavior pattern instead of automatic responses to particular
stimuli (DeHart, Sroufe, Cooper, p. 164). These built in behavior patterns are not only

Votive Statue Of Gudea Essay
The Depiction of Divine Power in Votive Statue of Gudea
Votive Statue of Gudea, is one of a series of votive figures commissioned by the Sumerian ruler
Gudea, circa the year 2090 BCE . It was found in the modern city of Telloh, Iraq, formerly called
Girsu, the capital city of the ancient Sumerian city state of Lagash . The statue is carved from
diorite, a hard, dark colored stone that must have been imported to the city from other parts of the
region . The votive statue is relatively small in size, measuring only two and a half feet in height .
In the sculpture, Gudea stares directly at the viewer with large, pupil less eyes. His neck is nearly
nonexistent, and his broad shoulders and long, well defined arms are disproportionate to the
statue s comparably short torso and legs. In the artwork, Gudea is dressed in a long, smooth robe
covered in cuneiform writing. A top his head, Gudea wears a large stylized fleece hat and he holds
a jug spouting water in two streams firmly in his hands. In Votive Statue of Gudea, the artist
attempts to portray Gudea s divine right to rule though his use of material, opulent dress, and
idealized features. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The task would have been particularly challenging with the tools of the period in which it was
created. Furthermore, the stone itself was not locally available and had to be imported from other
areas. This project would have required well trained artisans and likely took a sizeable amount of
time to complete. It is also important to note that this figure is only one of twenty. This all would
have necessitated the commissioner of the piece have access to a vast amount of material wealth.

The Observations Of Albert Einstein s Theory Of Relativity
The most recent confirmation of Albert Einstein s theory of relativity was the detection of
gravitational waves. This discovery revolutionised our understanding of science and the universe. It
has also unlocked the potential for future scientific endeavours especially in the field of
gravitational wave astronomy.
Spacetime is the union of the three spatial dimensions and the one time dimension into a
continuum1. According to general relativity, gravity is the curvature of this spacetime due to the
presence of mass. The greater the present mass the greater the curvature. Extremely large changes
in spacetime curvature create wave like ripples in spacetime that propagate at light speed.2 These
extremely large changes can occur due to black holes merging together. These ripples are
gravitational waves, and can be detected. In 1916 gravitational waves were predicted by Albert
Einstein in his theory of general relativity.1
Gravitational waves were first detected on 14 September 2015 by the Laser Interferometer
Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO).3 This observatory consists of two installations, one in
Hanford and one in Livingston, America. The waves detected were caused when two black holes
of 36 and 29 solar masses merged. LIGO splits a laser beam down 2 perpendicular 4 kilometre
tunnels, that are reflected back to their origin where they recombine at a detector. The two light
beams travel the same distance, so normally when they recombine they cancel each other out. In the

Arc Welder Essay
Top 10 Best Arc Welders 2016 Review
Are you working on an extension to your home, building something in your garage or do you
need to carry out routine maintenance and some minor repairs on parts and appliances at home?
Do you have the right tools for the job? A reliable arc welder is one of the important tools you
need. This is a machine which converts 110 to 240 volts AC electricity to weldingvoltage, which
normally ranges between 40 and 79 volts AC, and sometimes into an array of DC voltages. A
welder consists of a transformer, an internal cooling fan, a voltage regulator and an amperage
range selector. The type of machine you need depends on your welding skills and it s intended to
use.
Arc welding utilizes an electric current which flows between a welding rod and the welding
material to melt the metal and make the weld. The location being welded is at times protected
by filler material or a semi inert gas. Arc welding is commonly used because it is cheap. It also
the first type of welding apprentices learns. Arc welders are extensively used in a wide range of
application ranging from industrial processes to home use.

Student Retention Is A Growing Problem
Many colleges and universities throughout the United States and several other countries face a
common problem. Student retention is a growing problem across the nation for all ethnic groups
and all ages. Each individual who chooses to drop out of school has their own personal reasons as
to why they do. However, many drops out can be completely avoided. When students drop out they
are not clearly thinking about how it s going to affect their future, the future of their children and
even grandchildren. Although there are several reasons as to why students drop out of school, we
will be exploring a few as it relates to why studentretention is a growing problem.
Transitioning into higher education presents challenges for all students, whether it s their age or
previous educational history. Numerous individuals are extremely nervous as they are entering into
an advanced environment such as higher education. This because college is a new learning
environment at a completely different level. However, freshmen find college to be difficult at first
because it s harder for them to adjust. That s why many universities should have student centers in
place to help students. Student centers give students the pathway for flexible learning as it results
in being successful in higher education (BauЕѕienД— VosyliЕ«tД— 2015).
Lin and Tsai (2008) used a quantitative approach to understanding student retention; however, they

Inequality In I Am Malala
In the book, I Am Malala, Malala discusses how women face inequality in Pakistan and
Afghanistan. Malala was named after Malalai of Maiwand, who was a folk hero who lead her
people to victory. Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, was also a prominent role model for women, but
unfortunately was assassinated by a suicide attack. Both woman had a great impact on the rights of
women in the Pakistan/Afghanistan region. However, I believe that Malala promoted the equality of
women better than Benazir. Women worldwide suffer verbal, emotional, physical, and sexual
abuse, along with their sequelae, such as traumatic injuries, sexually transmitted diseases, chronic
pain, eating and sleeping disorders, other psychiatric conditions, and alcohol and drug abuse. To
combat the issue of Woman s Rights there have been organizations who work to stand against the

Hyperboles In The Chilli Fart
Humor can be one of our best survival tools Allen Klein. The Chili Fart which has an anonymous
author is about a man and his unfortunate experience about urgently having to go to the bathroom
while shopping at Walmart. The Chili Fart has a low level of comedy that uses hyperboles and
comic situations to convey the idea that bodily functions can happen at any time, and one should
be prepared. The Chili Fart is an example of low comedybecause there are many comedic and
unfortunate situations, which cause many problems for the author. The author adds many comic
situations such as, With each new guffaw an explosive issue burst forth from my nether region (
The Chili Fart ). Adding misfortunes to the main character is a form of low comedy because there
is not much to comprehend and there is a lot of slapstick humor involved. Adding unfortunate
situations like this creates more humor to the audience because it adds more plot and readers will
keep reading to find out what happens. In addition to comic situations, the anonymous author adds

will be laughing. This essay has many more of hyperboles to bring smiles to the faces of readers.
Another example was when the author s loud noises sounded like, someone was robbing the store

creates humor because it shows how loud the the author s noises were and how scary it must have
been for the customers. The hyperboles emphasize the humor in this essay and cause the readers to

The Girl With Cobwebs Analysis
The past four papers that we, as class, read and discussed have all focused on people with a dark
and gloomy past. The story about the girl with a zipper in her throat conveys a lot of meaning
through the figurative language the author included in her writing. A girl with cobwebs in her
throat has a hard time communicating her past and feelings due to the cobwebs blocking sounds
from exiting her vocal cords. The conception of having cobwebs in a person s throat is fictitious,
but the author used cobwebs in her writing to symbolize her dark past. The cobwebs in her throat
were unreachable, but the doctor placed a zipper in her throat for ease of accessibility to manage
them. He gave her control over her problem through an evaluation session as doctors don t

that can clean stress and sadness due to past emotional trauma is drugs. Drugs, although they
make a person temporarily feel better, only cause worse trauma when the high goes down. Most
prescriptions written by psychiatrists are drugs that trigger high levels of endorphin and leave a

* Economic development
Despite being the gateway to Africa, South Africa still has some economic challenges. Poor

headache for this country (Grundling and Steynberge 2010). By FIFA accepting to take this major

Similarities Between V For Vendetta And 1984
Overcome, Perish, 1984 and V for Vendetta
Alan Moore and George Orwell s stylistic writing choices and parallels between fascist
governments and the methods used to oppose them in their pieces V for Vendetta and 1984 with
the use of rhymes and television to represent a biased sense of view and salvation left in history,
and how the Party uses their own symbols to repress that salvation.
1984 and V for Vendetta both take place in a Great Britain controlled by a totalitarianistic society
with non conformist characters who take on that society with a unique approach. Winston Smith
uses a private rebellion between himself and Julia as his nonconformity against the Inner Party. In
V for Vendetta, however, V s take on resisting the NorsefireParty is very direct and outspoken to
the public. In their own ways, they both hide their hatred for the Party. Winston himself keeps
his meetings with Julia hush hush in Mr. Charrington s room, while V s identity is never
revealed, always wearing a mask. Symbols play a key role in establishing the stories of Winston
and V. 1984 s chant for the Brotherhood is the Oranges and Lemons English nursery rhyme
refers to the bells of churches in London that extends on by people who matter to Winston; and
everyone who betrays him. Mr. Charrington gives him the first piece, but is revealed to be a part
of the Thought Police, Julia, who betrays him at the end of it all before her mental death, and O
Brian, who instead of his savior becomes his torturer. The Fifth of November is also a rhyme
that s based off real events, referencing Guy Fawkes s failed plan to blow up the English
Parliament on November 5th, 1605. Both rhymes are tied into Great Britain and a passion that
varies between the protagonists, providing them with their only link to the past. Television is
also a main symbol for the government s control both the telescreens in 1984 and the telly in V
for Vendetta broadcast only the Party s views and bias. Gordon, a side character in V for Vendetta,

Character Analysis of Aaron the Moor in ShakespeareВґs...
Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare, is a play full of murders, miseries and heinous
deeds, whose chief architect (Shakespeare 5.3.121) for the most part, if not all, was Aaron the
Moor. The audience of the play would be so quick to rule Aaron as a purely evil character, the
most evil of all the other characters. However, a deeper analysis of Aaron shows that despite his
villainy, he still has a human side which he shows towards his son, and that his dark skin has made
him a victim of racism, which might have influenced his character, and developed his evil nature
that he enjoys. Aaron s status is more complicated than just purely evil, and on the whole, he can be
a sympathetic character.
In the play Titus Andronicus, the theme of parents and children is clearly visible, and the
audience get to see a humanitarian side of the presumably purely evil Aaron, that he shows
towards his son. Unlike the hero of the play, Titus, who does not hesitate to slay his son in a
wrongful quarrel (Shakespeare 1.1.294) and disown him: Nor thou, nor he, are any sons of
mine; my son s would never so dishonour me (Shakespeare 1.1.295 296), Aaron refuses that his

The Great Divide And Abortion Essay
The Great Divide Abortion is dividing America. Without a common understanding of abortion,
this issue will always be divisive in America. Throughout the history of America, abortion has
been an issue that has generally separated people into two camps, those in favor of abortion and
those against abortion. However, these two groups, more often than not, have not approached their
understanding of this issue from the same perspective. Generally speaking, those in favor of
abortion see the issue of the personal rights of women. However, those against abortion, view the
issue of the rights of the child. As a result, these two perspectives will never gain unity or a
common understanding of abortion. The purpose of this paper is to not only give a clear
understanding of both sides of the issue, but to argue that this issue will never be a unifying issue in
American culture. A simple definition of abortion provides a common starting point for
understanding this divisive issue. The Webster s New World Dictionary defines abortion as a
premature expulsion of a fetus so that it does not live, especially if induced on purpose (2). The fact
that the fetus cannot survive independently outside of the mother s womb due to an abortion
presents a continuous debate. Ultimately this debate hinges on the point in time the fetus becomes
a human being. Mark Y. Herring quotes the text from Abortion, Medicine and Law, Abortion
implies intent or purpose, but statutes frequently spell it out anyway,

Film Components in The Matrix
Soon after, Neo the hacker, is questioning the truth of this entire world, which is seemed to be
normal. And, he meets Trinity, an other hacker. The leader of the Nebuchadnezzar, Morpheus
tells him the actual real world is controlled by a computer artificial intelligence system called
The Matrix , humans are only like animals raised by them without any freedom and thoughts.
And, Neo is the only savior who can rescue the humans. However, the road to salvation can never
be smoothed, so where will the actual real world be? Will Neo be strong enough to start a war
fighting for the humans? Is Neo the only hope of all humanity? This is the empire of the hackers,

Therefore, this explains why Neo does not need to hide from the bullet when he is fighting.
For set design, the next aspect of meaning in a film is the design of the sets. The color, shape and
angles of a set can be a very important way of communicating, not only meanings, but also
emotional or psychological states of mind to the viewer. In the matrix everything is filled with
green, it seems like the camera is also covered with a green tinted lens. This can then divide a
clear vision difference for the audiences between the actual real world and the matrix. In fact, the
actual real world is linked with the matrix and in some ways they relate with connection. The
matrix, for some reason is evil to the human. Therefore, when things become evil, the color of
green is also involving inside as green itself is representing the matrix. When Smith is trying to kill
Neo, there are green flames surrounding around them. However, green the actual meaning in
psychology refers to safety, health, nature and life. This suggests that if the machines are neither
evil nor self indulgent, the one who carry out the program are Merovingian and Smith. Green
therefore, its meaning in here is seen as virtual as it is different from the original meaning, but the
color of it is seen as real.
For costumes that characters wear very often reveal aspects of their personality and be used to
guide our opinions of the people in the film. In the matrix, Trinity wears a black

The Issue of Overfishing
In contemporary society, human society is progressing rapidly on various fronts. Nevertheless at
the same time, the problem of overfishing is becoming increasingly worrisome and attract extensive
attention of the society. In this essay, I will address overfishing and propose some possible causes
of this phenomenon which can give contribution to some solutions. Introduction
This issue of overfishing covers vast fields, such as science, humanity, economy, society and nature.
The term optimum , in regard to the yield from a fishery, is difficult to be defined, precisely and
fixedly. Generally speaking, we can describe it as follows: (Niles E. Stople, January 2009, FishNet
USA)
Will provide maximum effectiveness benefit to the Nation, particularly in relation to food
production and recreational opportunities, and giving consideration to the protection of marine
ecosystems
In case of an overfished fishery, provides for reconstructing to a level consistent with producing the
maximum sustainable yield in such fishery
Overfishing s status as the focus of public concern mainly results from its negligible but harmful
influence on individuals, collective, and even the whole world. One of the world s significant
fishery in the East China Sea is damage by overfishing and growing levels of contamination, recent
research has shown, confirming the fear of fishermen and environmentalists. (Xinhua on GOV, Lu

Sociology and Religion Essay example
This paper is from a catholic feminist s perceptive that the church, as an institution, is structured as
a pyramid modeled on the patriarchal family with the custom of father right. The patriarchal
decision maker has the power to shape, form and control the poor of the world (McCormick, pg.
240) mirroring the aspect of the conflict theory. The poor of the world are the people who work for
the institution of the Church controlled by the patriarchal power elite. These established masses of
people feel no control, which cause anxiety and they continue to perform their means of production
as a formed unit. The power elite s fear of being overthrown by the poor of the world is fueled with
sheer determination and consistencyto stay on top.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In turn, religion started to desacralize as the patriarchal family modeled for business firms, industry,
government, educational systems and other organization because the un represented people were
learning that the people who make decisions for others make them against nonmembers. Religion
and science affirmed the sacredness of hierarchy and theocracy but today the amount of exploitation
by elite in government and industries question these affirmations and instead of father right it is
human right with the inferior groups claiming what is theirs. Human rights create equal opportunity
available for all races. The more inferior groups realize and recognize the presuppositions of
superiority through social conditioning then the more they can do to demand changes for their civil
rights.
The human rights cause in the rise of desacralization of religion relies also on women s roles and
significance in religious sacralization, which was developed out of fear of human extinction while
serving the elite. Women were encouraged to bear children for existence and the church reinforced
sexuality as the common ethic of Western society. Now, since there is an immense population base
with advances in science proving to propagate the race through methods such as cloning, there is no
longer the fear of human population dying out and women are no

The Joys of Traveling by Air
The Joys of Traveling By Air
With the various methods of travel nowadays, traveling by air is by far the most convenient and
enjoyable method (Irony). The hours spent in the airport, waiting to get on board, are totally worth
the gourmet plane food, the lazy boy quality seats, and the spacious setting (Alliteration).
On the day of your flight, it is highly recommended to arrive hours in advance for security
purposes. This is entirely understandable because the heightened security is necessary to prevent
any incidents such as the one five years ago known as 9 11. There is always the possibility a
terrorist will hijack a plane using a knitting needle, pen knife, or other sharp object because
potential hazardous objects are permitted on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The waiting area is heaven when comparing it to the option of sitting on the cardboard bench in
your shack and having discussions with your family.
With all the line waiting, convenient security checks, and more waiting; the airplane ride itself
can be expected to be even more enjoyable. As you first make your way around the plane,
attempting to locate your seat, remember that some people find it necessary to block the entire
isle. If they can do it, I guess that means you should to because it s only the polite and decent
thing to do. Not to worry; it typically takes a half an hour before the flight takes off so it is a
way to pass the time by. Once everyone s settled, all cellular devices are off, because they re of
great use with the many cell towers in the air, and the run way is clear, it s time for takeoff. You
are quite snug with the passengers besides your seat, and if you re lucky, you may be able to
smell their various odors. Another exciting part of flying by air is it is always a surprise to who
you ll be seated next to. The passengers could vary from city folk, red necks, and middle Eastern
folk. Personally, it is enjoyable to be seated next to a middle Eastern because it adds a sense of
hospitality and relaxation during the flight. As the flight continues, the stuartess is finally

College Drinking
I would agree with the research. Before coming to college I never drank. I had friends who drank
alcohol and have been around it a lot. I always said I don t think I would ever drink alcohol. I didn
t have anything against it, I just felt as though it wasn t for me.
Starting college was a great experience for me. I ve meet many people who I have built
relationships with, and I ve noticed how different people can be from you. A lot of the people
who I hung with in college drank alcohol when we went to parties. I would go to the parties, but I
wouldn t drink. At first I did not drink but I believe me being in the party environment and seeing
everyone enjoying themselves influenced me to try it. I would say the party environment ... Show

The labeling theory is a theory that describes how the self identity and behavior of individuals
may be determined or influenced by the terms people use to describe or classify them (Mead,
2008). I feel as though labeling can be categorized with stereotyping. I don t see how they are
different from each other because you are putting a label on someone because of their actions.
There is some positivity with assigning someone a diagnosis of of a psychological disorder. For
instance living life not knowing about a disorder may be causing harm to your body. Going through
life without be aware is also cutting out the opportunity to get help for the problem occurring. So
knowing about it can help in the long run.
Some negative aspects when labeling someone with psychological disorders would be that a
person may not be viewed for who they are but, what their diagnosis is. Individuals may be
looked at negatively and their positive attributes are most likely to be looked passed. Another
negative aspect would be that medications may come with serious side effects that can do harm to
a person s health. All medications are known to have side effects. Stimulants that are commonly
used by individuals with ADHD may cause insomnia, suppressed appetite and growth, and other
side effects that can affect child and adolescent development. An individual who is diagnosed with
a psychological problem may be treated differently because of their label. It may be worse for
children because they have yet to develop their

  • 2. `` The Day They Tied Me Up `` Sharon Olds was born in San Francisco on November 19, 1942. At age fifteen, she was sent to a boarding school in Massachusetts. Many of her poems focus on difficult childhood and the body. As Olivia Laing, literary critic of several literary novels and publications, says, The physical body is a document of being, physical experience is the primary mode of forming, and physical contact is the primary human relationship. Like Whitman, Olds celebrates the body in its pleasures and pains. She is a contemporary poet who focuses on autobiographical poems mostly of sexual or violent nature and personal experience. She particularly resonates with women readers and women s connections with family members and lovers of the past and present through physical, sexual, and emotional means. She writes frequently about her sadistic, alcoholic father and victimized mother. Her dysfunctional family plays an enormous role in her poetry, especially in The Day They Tied Me Up. This poem is inspired by true events and the feelings and emotions felt by the poet during a memorable aspect of her childhood. When Olds was eight years old, she emptied a bottle of ink onto her parents bedspread and was tied to a chair as punishment. In perceptionby Maurice Merleau Ponty, a French philosopher commonly associated with the philosophical movement of existentialism, he demonstrates Olds s serial return to the moment of this punishment within the space of the lyric poem is a formal method for ... My intent is to answer these questions, and determine what can be done to fix the issue at hand. The above mentioned communal crisis has affected our ability to connect with others, as well as our means to be self sufficient. The concept of The American Dream is at fault for the decline of our social state, particularly the basis of individualism and consumerism, both at which reinforce economic inequality. The American Dream is seen as the opportunity to succeed and achieve upward mobility, but in reality this dream has become a nightmare. Consequently, the presents of an oligarchy has contributed to the diminishment of the middle class, further dividing the rich from the poor. David Myers would say that this divide creates an us versus them environment (105). Myers is a social psychologist who studied the diverging effects of groups. He learned that we associate ourselves with groups to feel better about ourselves (105). The downfall of in groups is that we tend to exclude and look down at outsiders. Conforming within a group can be debilitating to social interactions, and tend to cause prejudices towards other people (Myers 106). For the purposes of this paper, classism is the preconception at hand. Classism is the intolerance of another social class; this bigotry is commonly practiced against the poor. Most of the affluent members of the elite social class claim that those in poverty are lazy and don t aspire to be successful; and because of these schemas, the elite find no use for programs that essentially help the lower class survive. Osmosis helps keep the water levels in cells at homeostasis and diffusion tries to reach equilibrium by moving to an area of lower concentration. The two experiments were designed and performed to test the rate of diffusionby measuring the size of the phenolphthalein agar block and the weight of the dialysis tubes. To begin with, the experiments, The Rate of Diffusion and Cell Size, was to test whether the rate of diffusion was affected by the volume and surface area. It was hypothesized that the volume and surface area of the phenolphthalein agar block and the dialysis tubing will have affect on the rate of diffusion. • 13. The Empty Nest And Its Effect On Marriage Quality The Empty Nest and its Effect on Marriage Quality An empty nest is described by a household where all children have left to venture on their own paths and leave the home permanently. While laughing is quite common, have you ever considered the factors behind laughter? Three theorists Hobbes, Freud, and Bergson evaluate the subject of laughter and humor. In the first few paragraphs of Hobbes passage, he discusses how people degrade those they dislike. He then explains how humans desire to rise above others so they feel superior, making his theory known as the superiority theory. Hobbes believes that by human nature, witty jokes does not always produce laughter; laughter can be evoked by misfortunes or obscenities. The essence of superiority then becomes apparent. Hobbes reveals laughter as hierarchical. Laughter is aroused when others have different intellectual or social statuses. Due to the fact that men yearn to feel higher in their rank, men dislike to be laughed at; Hobbes states, [it is no wonder therefore that men take heinously to be laughed at or derided, that is, triumphed over] (66). With his contributions to the psychological field, like his six stages of sensorimotor development, we grasp a better understanding of a child s first encounters developmentally. One of his most important accounts was on the concept of object permanence. He was able to provide a look into infants understanding of the physical world (DeHart, Sroufe, Cooper, p. 168). In order to better understand his account on object permanence however, one must be aware of his six stages of sensorimotor development: Reflexes, Primary Circular Reactions, Secondary Circular Reactions, Coordination of Schemes, Tertiary Circular Reactions, and Beginnings of Representational Thought, which were largely influence through his experiments with his own children. The first stage, Reflexes, occurs from birth to 1 month. During this stage, Piaget asserted, infants are limited to their biological, programmed reflexes. This discovery revolutionised our understanding of science and the universe. It has also unlocked the potential for future scientific endeavours especially in the field of gravitational wave astronomy. Spacetime is the union of the three spatial dimensions and the one time dimension into a continuum1. According to general relativity, gravity is the curvature of this spacetime due to the presence of mass. The greater the present mass the greater the curvature. Extremely large changes in spacetime curvature create wave like ripples in spacetime that propagate at light speed.2 These extremely large changes can occur due to black holes merging together. These ripples are gravitational waves, and can be detected. In 1916 gravitational waves were predicted by Albert Einstein in his theory of general relativity.1 Gravitational waves were first detected on 14 September 2015 by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO).3 This observatory consists of two installations, one in Hanford and one in Livingston, America. The waves detected were caused when two black holes of 36 and 29 solar masses merged. Similarities Between V For Vendetta And 1984 Overcome, Perish, 1984 and V for Vendetta Alan Moore and George Orwell s stylistic writing choices and parallels between fascist governments and the methods used to oppose them in their pieces V for Vendetta and 1984 with the use of rhymes and television to represent a biased sense of view and salvation left in history, and how the Party uses their own symbols to repress that salvation. 1984 and V for Vendetta both take place in a Great Britain controlled by a totalitarianistic society with non conformist characters who take on that society with a unique approach. Winston Smith uses a private rebellion between himself and Julia as his nonconformity against the Inner Party. In V for Vendetta, however, V s take on resisting the NorsefireParty is very direct and outspoken to the public. In their own ways, they both hide their hatred for the Party. Winston himself keeps his meetings with Julia hush hush in Mr. Charrington s room, while V s identity is never revealed, always wearing a mask. Symbols play a key role in establishing the stories of Winston and V. 1984 s chant for the Brotherhood is the Oranges and Lemons English nursery rhyme refers to the bells of churches in London that extends on by people who matter to Winston; and everyone who betrays him. Mr. Charrington gives him the first piece, but is revealed to be a part of the Thought Police, Julia, who betrays him at the end of it all before her mental death, and O Brian, who instead of his savior becomes his torturer. Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare, is a play full of murders, miseries and heinous deeds, whose chief architect (Shakespeare 5.3.121) for the most part, if not all, was Aaron the Moor. The audience of the play would be so quick to rule Aaron as a purely evil character, the most evil of all the other characters. However, a deeper analysis of Aaron shows that despite his villainy, he still has a human side which he shows towards his son, and that his dark skin has made him a victim of racism, which might have influenced his character, and developed his evil nature that he enjoys. Aaron s status is more complicated than just purely evil, and on the whole, he can be a sympathetic character. In the play Titus Andronicus, the theme of parents and children is clearly visible, and the audience get to see a humanitarian side of the presumably purely evil Aaron, that he shows towards his son. Unlike the hero of the play, Titus, who does not hesitate to slay his son in a wrongful quarrel (Shakespeare 1.1.294) and disown him: Nor thou, nor he, are any sons of mine; my son s would never so dishonour me (Shakespeare 1.1.295 296), Aaron refuses that his son be killed, and makes it clear that he shall not die (Shakespeare 4.2.81) and that he who touches his son will die upon his scimitar s sharp point (Shakespeare 4.2.91 92).Some might argue that Aaron s actions towards his son are simply egotistical ,and that he sees the boy as a means of perpetuating his own evil ... Throughout the history of America, abortion has been an issue that has generally separated people into two camps, those in favor of abortion and those against abortion. However, these two groups, more often than not, have not approached their understanding of this issue from the same perspective. Generally speaking, those in favor of abortion see the issue of the personal rights of women. However, those against abortion, view the issue of the rights of the child. As a result, these two perspectives will never gain unity or a common understanding of abortion. The purpose of this paper is to not only give a clear understanding of both sides of the issue, but to argue that this issue will never be a unifying issue in American culture. A simple definition of abortion provides a common starting point for understanding this divisive issue. The Webster s New World Dictionary defines abortion as a premature expulsion of a fetus so that it does not live, especially if induced on purpose (2). The fact that the fetus cannot survive independently outside of the mother s womb due to an abortion presents a continuous debate. Ultimately this debate hinges on the point in time the fetus becomes a human being. Mark Y.
