Latent Defect Essay

CM 385: Section 1
Final Paper
How Can A Contractor Avoid Liability for Defective Work?
Every contract created produces a margin of risk and a platform for success. Depending on how one
manages the risk assumed, one may either excel and shine in the glory of success or drown and
disappear in the raging waters of error. Nevertheless, to become great one must take that step of faith
into the flailing wind. As said by Leo F. Buscalglia, The person who risks nothing does nothing, has
nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot
learn... and grow... and live. (Buscalglia, 2009) The contractor who is bound to the owner must

Binghamton Housing Authority. It was six years after the completion of the Saratoga Terrace
apartment complex when a child fell off the back porch stoop and received severe injuries. The
parents of the child claimed that the contractor and owner were responsible due to their negligence in
constructing the stoop without a protective railing. The court referenced back to the Campo v.
Schofield case, which states, We have not yet reached the state where a manufacturer is under the duty
of making a machine accident proof or foolproof. The court also noted that the complex had been used
without accident for six years and that it did not conceal any dangers or defective work that would not
have been found by a reasonable inspection. The outcome of the case proved that the pleading did not
contain any allegation of a defect, and that the liability rested upon the parents of the child.
Consequently, the phrase Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware) protects the contractor from future claims as
long as the defective work existed at the time of inspection and could have reasonably been identified.
Nevertheless, a contractor must also understand that if the defective work is classified as a latent
defect, the risk and liability associated with this defect may be transferred back to the contractor.
Therefore, a contractor must understand what a latent

The Social and Political Influences Leading up to the...
The Social and Political Influences Leading up to the First World War Romanticism began in the
closing decades of the Eighteenth Century. Influencing all spheres of life, pervading the populace of
Europe and the first half of the Nineteenth Century with idealistic, yet unreal sentiment. Contradicting
any romantic or idealistic belief were the uniform followers of rationalism and conservatism,
descendents of Puritanism that arose in the Church of England during the early 17th Century. The
German writer E. T. A. Hoffmann quoted in retrospect infinite longing was the essence of
romanticism, if this definition is accepted, it may be said that it created in Europe, an illicit hunt for a
utopian society. This I theorize is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The southern Germanic states were forced to accept Prussian hegemony, and Germany as it is known
today was formed. Within the space of thirty years, Germany had gone from being a cluster of
insignificant states to the most powerful state in Europe full of nationalistic sentiment, patriotic people
and militaristic Kaisers. It is easily forgotten that Italy, similar to Germany is only a recently created
state. Little over a century ago Italy was divided into five main groups, all subject to political
arrangements made by their foreign rulers. It took 21 years of resistance in the name of Irredentism, to
oust the puppet Autocratic government. Liberal views were enough, Liberal views and the invasion of
Austria(1848), and for a second time in 1859, the invasions were used in order to establish the nation,
and to expel Austrian emigrants from northern Italy, the theme of unifying ones nation through
military action has been exemplified again. In order to determine a nation on the global stage, an
expansionistic foreign policy has been held by both Germany and Italy, and the result has been
successful each time fusing the populace closer together by attaining a sense of achievement through
hardship and therefore a joint heritage and culture. Now

Portraiture Depictions Of Queen Elizabeth I
Portraiture Depictions of Queen Elizabeth I Elizabeth Tudor or Queen Elizabeth I was and is one of
the greatest monarchs in English history. Obtaining the crown at a young age of twenty five, she
seized a bankrupt country caused by previous rulers, a country with an unstable religion, and loose ties
with other great powers of the world. Elizabeth I ruled for nearly half a century granting her the
remembrance with reigning with stability, the flourishment of the arts, and increased trade. Elizabeth s
sense of duty to her people was very admirable and that is one the reasons that makes her such a great
monarch. She was committed to her people and never swayed from doing such that. In saying that,
one of the ways people showed their love and to show her greatness it was represented in portraits.
Portraiture of Queen Elizabeth I illustrates an evolution of her reign over England and Ireland in the
years of 1558 1603. Early portraits of young Elizabeth showcase what is going on her life or what is
important to her at that specific time. Objects such as prayer books and status clothing would be
displayed in the earlier portraits. Later portraits of Elizabeth also showcase her life and the importance
of virginity, purity, crowns, and other effects. Representations of simplicity to later complex imagery
are used to exhibit her power as well as allusions or stories to convey the Elizabeth. Progressively,
Elizabeth transformed into the goddess Gloriana, engrossed in imperial

Should Huckleberry Finn Be Taught In Schools Essay
Mark Twain s novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has caused controversy over whether it
should be taught in schools due to the racist content of the novel. These racist aspects of the novel are
not meant to be racist but in fact the opposite, they are used by twain to convey messages about the
time period in which the novel was written. Samuel Clemens or his pen name Mark Twain was born
and grew up in Hannibal, Missouri which is where his novel takes place. Most of Twain s works are
works of satire, mostly criticizing Society. Satire is using humor to criticize or expose problems within
the area that is being satirized. The main aspect of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that has
caused controversy is Twain s repeated use of the n word. However his use of this word is used to
present what was wrong with southern society at the time.

Indians Vs. The Constitution Essay
They are Native Americans who are trying to build better lives for themselves but are stopped in there
tracks by the state supreme court. Proposition 5 passed in November of 98, which would allow more
gambling in the Indian reservations. The proposition was ruled to be unconstitutional. Now the
Indians are rebutting the fact that they are sovereign and the ballot was passed.
Under existing law, Indian tribes operate as semi sovereign nations, and are liable under federal law
only. Recently, the long standing political and legal tension between the Indians and the government,
which has characterized the relationship since colonization, has entered into the debate over tribal
gaming. Indian gaming is not new to California. In fact, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many tribes contend that, as sovereign nations, they are not subject to state regulation. The state has
demanded the tribes to cease their gambling operations and enter into an agreement with the state,
which will allow quot;legal quot; tribal gaming. Some tribes have agreed to Wilson s demands,
recently signing the Wilson Pala Compact that provides state control of tribal gaming and also
establishes a limit on the size of gaming operations. The majority of tribes have refused to agree to the
terms of the Wilson Pala Compact, however, claiming that it is inflexible and grants the state too much
power over tribal affairs.
Proposition 5 provides the terms of a tribal gaming compact and requires the Governor to permit any
tribe to enter into the compact upon request. In general terms, Proposition 5 s compact contains fewer
restrictions upon tribal gaming than is provided for in the Wilson Pala Compact and is more protective
of Indian sovereignty. The differences relate to such diverse issues as the number of slot machines
permitted, the type of games authorized, the degree of state involvement in regulating tribal gaming,
employee rights, local community involvement, liability provisions, and the applicability of state
health and safety requirements.
Two constitutional concerns arise from the language of the proposition. The first is whether the
proposition establishes a statute, or

The Chicano Movement By Frank Romero
Throughout history, art has helped in different mediums to bring awareness to different issues and
constructive messages to society. The Chicano movement started in the 1960s; the public wanted to
repair social injustice. The Chicano movement encompassed a broad section of issues; from
restoration of lands, to farm workers rights, to enhance education, to voting and political rights. At this
moment many individuals were trying different ways to express their views and one of those ways
was art. In the early years of the Chicano movement, Frank Romero established a reputation as one of
the Chicano art heroes. Through murals Frank Romero expressed his thoughts and embodied a
Chicano identity. His murals would not only connect with Mexicans, but with everyone. In his
painting or art Romero would usually show everyday events in different views, opening the eyes of
the viewer. Romero s art would come out strong. Although Romero gained his fame with his murals,
he is amazing in drawing, painting, ceramics, and sculptures. He is not just a remarkable Chicano
artist, but an astonishing artist around the world.
Frank Romero was born in 1941 in Los Angeles, California. He was raised in a culturally mixed,
middle class community and was well into his career when he identified himself as a Latino artist.
During the height of the Chicano movement in the early 1970s, he and other artists founded a group
named Los Four. The group originally consisted of Roberto de la Rocha, Gilbert

Sex Education And Public Schools Essay
In this paper I will address virginity, first sexual experiences, sex education in public schools, and
abortion. The first two topics, virginity and first sexual experiences, coming from a personal
perspective as well as some credible sources. I will also include the historical aspects of virginity, the
creation and use of the concept, and why it s in our society. The last topic is my concern for the lack of
sex education in public schools and mentioning the harm of abstinence only sex education and the
importance to provide comprehensive education for our youth for protection and lifelong sexual
satisfaction. I will also include my experience with sex education and how limited or censored topics
can be detrimental to children by second guessing their understanding of necessary and critical sexual
information.
Virginity. Anyone is familiar with the term virginity. Whichever way the word was introduced to us all
throughout our lives we have either been taught by parents or educators about the word and the
concept of virginity or we have figured it out by word of mouth among our peers. By definition,
according to a simple Google search, virginity is the state of never having had sexual intercourse or
the state of being naive, innocent, or inexperienced in a particular context. With the concept of
virginity there are myths that are deeply rooted to it that come from the historical and societal aspects
of our culture, despite the word virginity being prevalent for many

Han and Roman Views on Technology
Han and Roman Views on Technology
The Hans and Romans understood the importance of technology, but unlike the Hans, the Romans
viewed anyone who worked with tools or with their hands to be a person of lowly status. The Romans
only showed appreciation for technologies that could hold some benefit for the upper class. The upper
class Romans thought that craftsmen, people who made a living out of making tools, was hardly an
occupation that deserved any respect. The Hans appreciated the use of tools in their labor and how it
could help the people. The Hans showed a great appreciation of their technological advancements, and
its effect on society.
The Roman attitude toward technology was that any person who worked in workshops, devoting ...

These tools are also sold at very high prices considering their low quality. The Han government has
dominated the trade of iron, controlling the quality of tools used by the people to do work, and the
quality of tools the government uses to perform its public duties, such as repair work and the building
of public structures.
All the previous documents used above were all in the perspective of an upper class citizen. An
additional document that would have shown the attitude of the lower class citizens and the women s
perspective of these technological achievements would have added authenticity to this argument. A
document from the perspective of an upper class woman in Roman or Han society would show if new
technologies affected their everyday work/obligations, or if technologies were solely for the benefit of
men. Another source that would have been helpful would be from a lower class woman to show the
similarities and differences of the work expected of lower class and upper class women. Men were
dominate in both Roman and Han societies, but the attitude that the lower class men had of technology
was excluded from the list of documents provided. The documents consisting of the feelings of the
upper class citizens in the Han and Roman society s states that people of the lower class used tools to
perform their work, but it is unknown how they personally felt about technology and its affect on
them. From the information

The Effects Of Climate Change On The State Of Colorado
It is undeniable that climate change is drastically changing our current landscapes throughout the

progression, but many studies indicate that due to excess greenhouse gas emissions, humans are
accelerating global warming at an alarming rate. It s convenient to continuously dismiss the studies

According to Dr. Denning, as the global climate changes, average temperatures will rise sharply.
Because Colorado is so far inland, this effect will be stronger because large bodies of water help
mitigate temperature swings and Colorado is far from our oceans or Great Lakes. Imagine the climate
of Albuquerque as far north as Greeley. Additionally, we must consider the agriculture industry is
estimated to be worth around forty one billion dollars in Colorado, which means climate change will
have a drastic impact on food production. Colorado s geographic location is problematic in itself, but
the continuous temperature changes means longer growing seasons. Ultimately, the rising
temperatures make plants consume more water and it reduces the annual snowpack, which creates a
conundrum of issues. Similarly, we can assume a warmer Colorado will also mean a much drier
Colorado, which will hurt agriculture on every level.
A report submitted to the Colorado Energy Office, titled The Colorado Climate Change Vulnerability
Study presents key vulnerabilities the state is faced with due to climate change. The report highlights
many areas, but it offers insight into negative effects from climate variability and how to adapt to
them. Since the agricultural sector plays such a critical role in Colorado s economy, its vulnerabilities
are detailed at length. The report splits

The Main Causes And Consequences Of World War II

Understanding Elephant Poaching
The Elephants
Did you know that that 35,000 elephants are dying each year? We are poaching them, usually for a
price. Poaching is different from hunting. Hunting is when you kill for sport, and it s completely legal.
You still need a permit. Poaching is when you kill an animal without a permit. Sadly, 30 elephants are
lost a day in Tanzania. Imagine if that was you and your herd was getting killed with no end in sight.
We need to take some responsibility, because I would want to be killed just because a poacher had a
permit. In order to understand elephant poaching you need to know why they re being poached, the
perspectives of the poachers, and the organisations, how they re becoming extinct, what we can do to
help and what is being done to help. Elephants are being poached for their ivory. Countries around the
world are increasing ivory buying. This is because more elephants have been poached and ... Show

Lucretius Book 3 Essay
The chart above shows how Lucretius arranged his poem to combat his two main targets: the fear of
death the fear of the gods. In Books 1 2, Lucretius expounds upon his atomic theory of indestructible
particles, which cause an everlasting cycle of combination and separation, creation and destruction,
and birth and death. Everything in the universe is composed of these particles, thus everything is
mortal. Book 3 is dependent on the two previous books as it brings the ethical implication to the fore
by discussing the nature of the soul and its mortality. The culmination of Book 3 therefore death is

The Social Norms Of The Imaginary World
In any given culture, there is are sets of beliefs, or an imaginary world, that governs the way a culture
thinks and acts. As a result of the imaginary world, a system of widely accepted social norms and laws
are established and followed by all involved in the culture. However, I believe that although the
imaginary world does influence the culture as a whole, the concept of free will, agency and
individualism plays a part in how each person chooses to interpret the social norms and therefore live
their life. Taking the example of the Himba culture, I will be exploring the different aspects of the
imaginary world, individual interpretations of the imaginary world, and then looking at BYU
imaginary world to prove that each culture, regardless of location, is influenced by an imaginary world
as a whole but individuals can be influenced differently due to their relationships with others. Like
many cultures, religion is often the biggest influence in developing the social norms of a society,
especially morally accepted norms. The Himba people are a passionate, traditional people who are
loyal to their God, Mukuru. Their belief in Mukuru drives all of their decisions and what the come to

It represents the sacrifice Jesus is going to make for the people. Caravaggio s hand placement for
Jesus is very similar to Michelangelo s hand in his The Creation of Adam painting. This could have
been done intentional. Michelangelo painted God as he awakens Adam and now Caravaggio has
painted Jesus reaching out to Matthew as he is recreating his life. It is hard to tell exactly who Jesus is
pointing at since there are five men seated in front of him. However, the intensity of the light,
probably from a door that was opened, takes the viewers eyes right to the bearded mans hand which he
is pointing at himself in shock. Matthew is surprised that Jesus would pick someone like him.
Caravaggio is showing his audience that even if you believe you are not holy enough, everyone is able
to follow Christ. He gives his audience the ability to relate to St. Matthew. This tells us that he is
Matthew. At this moment, Matthew has to decide if he wants to stay and continue to be a tax collector,
or follow Jesus. The coin on top of his hat and his hand reaching out to a coin, symbolizes that money
is a huge part of him, if he went with Jesus he would be giving

Pharmacist Career Goals
In selecting a career, every person follows certain drives, justifications, and guidelines. A variety of
factors influenced my choice of pharmacy as a career. Having observed countless drug drug and drug
body interactions, volunteering as a pharmacy technician and in different positions in healthcare, I was
able to see the impact pharmacists have on patient lives and the mutual love they have for their
patients. I was pleased to see the effect pharmacists have on the quality of care their patients receive.
My lifelong goal was to find a career that would allow me to work directly with the public and make a

As a research assistant, I am currently studying the drug thalidomide, which caused one of the darkest
episodes in the history of pharmaceutical research due to its teratogenic effects. Through my research I
am able to obtain a better understanding of the molecular targets of the drug through the use of
chimera and cytoscape, which are specific software platforms that incorporates network data
integration and extensive molecular modeling systems. Although I appreciate the new skill set that
working as a research assistant has provided, my current stint has confirmed my intent to become a
clinical pharmacist, where I can have patient centered interactions and formulate appropriate care
plans to solidify my position as a key member of the interdisciplinary team. Moreover, my
membership in the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars Program at Ithaca College, a program that focuses

Errors And Expectations Summary
The next chapter of the book Errors Expectations by Mina Shaughnessy discusses spelling.
Shaughnessy asserts that there are many reasons why a basic writing student will misspell words.
These reasons include being unfamiliar with the structure of words, mis pronunciation, not being
familiar with homophones, failing to remember or see words, and not having a firm grasp on spelling
rules. Shaughnessy spends the majority of the chapter giving suggestions on how to help students
improve their spelling. She lines out several key ways in which this can be done. First of all, a teacher
must believe that her student can become a good speller. If she thinks that spelling cannot be taught
and simply notes errors in the margin of her student s paper, her student will get the idea that he is a
lost cause and will give up on trying to improve his spelling. However, if a teacher is optimistic and
gives her student tools and strategies for becoming a better speller, the student will begin to ... Show

The teacher must first help him to discover his spelling problems by teaching him to analyze his
errors, and then focus on specific rules or exercises that will help him to tackle the root of his errors.
Over time, he will learn to recognize and correct his errors and will become a much better speller.
Shaughnessy s viewpoints coincide with those of Constance Weaver in her book Grammar to Enrich
and Enhance Writing. In Chapter 9 of her book, Weaver discusses how to teach English Language
Learners to edit their errors, a very similar subject to Shaughnessy s chapter on spelling. Like
Shaughnessy, Weaver takes the constructivist approach and believes you must first discover why the
student makes specific errors. You can then assist them by providing active learning strategies needed
to target their areas of struggle. Over time, they will then begin to recognize and correct their

Industrialization Of Industrialization And...
Industrialization is a starting point for many of the technologies and factories around and exists today,
despite the negative influences of the industrialization, people gained many benefits from it too. For
example, because of the industrialization workers are more efficient producing goods and products,
also industrialization helped many people walked out of the countryside which broadens their
perspectives. For many countries, industrialization is a voluntary movement within the country, but as
an exception, China s industrialization is forced due to the barbarism action from Britain, France and
many other countries. Recalls the first Opium War, which is the event that aroused the
industrialization in China, and later the second Opium war etc.... Due to the pressure from enemies,
China has to start industrialization in order to strengthen itself and to protect the people from the
opponents. Overall, industrialization was a hard and a long term battle not only with other countries
but also within China itself. Luckily, China slowly recovered from its failure and walked out of its
shadow by the transformation through the self strengthening movement, the Xinhai revolution and
when new China was founded in 1949. Even though China is still in the process of industrialization,
but due to its transformation, China is now deemed as one of the strongest industrial countries around
the world.

Computer Literacy Narrative
Those were my first words. The task of creating a program which simply prints out Hello World is, by
tradition, the first one given to any new programmer. It s a rite of passage. The one seen above is
written in Java (a name you might recognize from those update notifications that never seem to leave
you alone). This little five line program has been written millions of times by those learning to be
literate with computers.
Computer literacy has played an extremely significant role in defining who I am today, in a more
unique and personal way than any traditional spoken language, and is set to define my future as well.
My ability to understand and communicate with computers is something I pride myself in greatly, and

Arlington High School is truly lucky to have Mr. Sheldon, a former valedictorian at MIT, teaching
computer science. His class was revelatory for me in my freshman year. The course was centered
around learning to code in Processing through small projects. Under his guidance, I was able to make
dinky little games using the most basic programming techniques. I distinctly remember my sense of
accomplishment upon turning in a barely playable knockoff of Line Runner for my first independent
project of the year. Now, looking back on this code gives me anxiety. It was nothing more than a
bunch of redundant global variables and if statements blasphemous! However, my programming
practices did improve slightly over the year; I was making eventually using arrays and loops to
streamline my programs. Code is truly like a language one can see the progress of their computer
literacy in the quality of the code they write. The drive to learn programming which begun in this class
has led me to spend considerable amount of my free time furthering my literacy. I ve since dabbled in
many different programming languages on my own time, such as HTML to make websites and C# in
Unity to make video games. Now, my code is a chocolatey combination of classes and abstraction
which I can be truly proud

Behavioral Variation Paper
Pepperberg, Snowdon, Shelton, Martins and Burghardt (2017), went over behavioral variation,
adaptation and evolution among individual organisms. Individual animals behave differently from
each other for extrinsic reasons, and this behavioral variation is the raw substrate for evolutionary
change. Behavioral variation can both enhance and constrain long term evolution, and it provides the
basic materials on which natural and sexual selection can act. A rich body of historical experimental
and conceptual foundations precedes many of the topics discussed. This classic literature is vast and
important, and we encourage the reader to examine it in detail because we discuss more recent
literature. For example, the study of the mechanisms that underlie ... Show more content on

Similarly, the study of individual differences has a rich history situated in the areas of behavioral
genetics, sociobiology, behavioral ecology, developmental psychology, personality theory, and studies
of learning and cognition. Each area has its own goals, associated techniques, and levels of
explanation. The study of behavioral variation during early development, for instance, has been
documented primarily by psychologists studying proximate mechanisms in laboratory animal models,
whereas the study of different adult morphs using the adaptationist perspective has been dominated by
behavioral ecologists examining natural populations. A more complete description of individual
differences requires an integrative study of the mechanisms that guide intraindividual flexibility and
the associated adaptive fine tuning of behavioral types. It is through this integration that researchers
can make predictions about the response of different individual phenotypes, groups, populations, and

Themes In The Invisible Man
The theme I chose for this novel is a young man searching for his identity and unsure about where to
turn to define himself.
The novel the invisible man is the story of a man who is searching for his happenings coming up and
now believes he is invisible to society. The narrator makes clear that he is invisible clearly because
people refuse to see him . The narrator flares back to his own youth, recalling his judgment. He goes
back to say that he lives underground, channeling electricity aside from Monopolated Light and Power
Company by edging his apartment . The narrator describes a vision he had while he was listening to
Louis Armstrong, exploring back into the history of slavery. He his introduced in an intangible voice ,
someone who has lost his specification through the society . The narrator casts back on an earlier
period of the 20th century, encouraging that a newly educated black class felt guilty of a past that was
no flaw of its own. The narrator s grandfather emerged to be in this line hoping to forget the history of
slavery, but on his deathbed reveals that the struggle against white oppression is still continuing . At
first, the narrator cannot grasp that his grandfather was fighting against oppression in his work he was
compliant to white men. But as he progresses as a student the denials of the system become more clear
it is not clear if white men wish for him to advance or not. The narrator s worldview has become more
complex.

Henry Ford s Responsibility For Creating The American...
More than any single person of the last century, Henry Ford can take responsibility for creating the
American middle class. We can thank him or curse him, but either way, we have to acknowledge the
impact Henry Ford had on our society. You might not know that Henry Ford did not start out as a
successful producer of automobiles. After building his first car, the Quadricycle. In 1899 he formed
the Detroit Automobile Company, which quickly failed after only a few vehicles were produced.
Henry and some of his original investors regrouped and formed the Henry Ford Company which
quickly ran into problems as well. Henry Ford was dismissed by his board of directors from the
company that carried his name because of his inability to bring a car to production. The company was
reorganized as the Cadillac Motor Car Company under the engineering leadership of Henry Leland. In
1903 Henry Ford felt he was ready to market an automobile for the public and the Ford Motor
Company was incorporated, this time with only $28,000 in cash put up by a new group of investors.
That original investment was spent down to $300 before the company s first car was sold, but from
that time on the company was a success. In October of 1908 Henry Ford proclaimed I will build a
motor car for the common man, and that s when the Model T was born. In the 19 years of the Model T
s existence, Ford built more than 15 million of the Model T and they were sold around the world. In
fact in their time Model

Amy Bloom s Silver Water
In Amy Bloom s short story, Silver Water , the main character Rose takes her own life as a result to
living with mental illness. Throughout the story the narrator, Rose s sister, shows the difficulties of
living with mental illness not only for Rose s family, but also for Rose. A common obstacle for the
family is getting Rose proper care; this is difficult because the family could not find long term
insurance or doctor. In Silver Water , Amy Bloom makes a point about how mental illness is treated;
the specific point she makes is that mental illness is not taken as seriously as it should be. This is
shown through how difficult it is for Rose to receive proper treatment. One of the first examples of
mistreatment is that in Silver Water Rose is pulled from her halfway home and is taken off of her
medicine so that her family could switch to an insurance that can better support the long term
treatment she needs. This leaves her parents struggling to take care of her at home while she is
nowhere close to stable. This is going to be difficult not all bad, but difficult for the whole family...
(Bloom 3) The narrator goes off to college while her parents take care of Rose. Through phone calls
from her parents the narrator sees how much of a toll taking care of Rose is on her parents and how
her behavior gets worse. Roses behavior goes downhill because she is taken off of her medication to
prove she has a mental illness. As a result, Rose gets so bad that she takes her own

Allegory In Lord Of The Flies Chapter Summary
Visualize yourself stranded in an island with people who are as confused as you are. There are no
rules, no governments, and no leaders. How would you act? Would you set up some sort of nation
state and immediately take to a role as a leader and create rules? Or take a different approach of
having fun and enjoy yourself while there s no authority? Lord of the Flies by William Golding was
written in the 1950 s. The route Golding took to writing this book is in a form of an allegory. An
allegory is a story that has a hidden meaning behind it, and this takes analyzing the text to figure the
secret meaning. The story takes place in an island where two boys, Ralph and Piggy, were stranded by
themselves after their getaway plane got shot out of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jack tries to make the boys go against Ralph because he thinks that Ralph is doubting his hunters.
Although, his effort to overthrow Ralph is unsuccessful because none of the boys raises their hands to
re elect Jack as leader. As a result, Jack parts ways from Ralph and the rest of the boys. Jack s first
order for his hunters is to find meat, and it is successfully done because he kills a female sow. In order
to lure the rest of the boys to his tribe Jack offers food ... and my hunters will protect you from the
beast. Who will join my tribe? (Golding 134). Bribing means to persuade people with a gift. What
motivates Jack to become leader is the fact that everyone will be on his side and not Ralph s.Thus, he
offers the other boys meat which the boys long for after having a diet of fruit and water. Additionally,
he provides protection because he knows that the boys fear the beast. The lesson that gaining
leadership requires bribing proves that he loses his innocence through the symbol of the conch
because the route to his actions is to take away power from Ralph since Ralph gets his power from the
conch because it symbolizes authority. Therefore, Jack loses his innocence because his intentions are
not well. Moreover, Jack learns the lesson that privatizing property on the island is beneficial. Ralph,
who is still persistent on keeping his role as chief, reminds Jack that there s rules that

Jesse Debenport s Poem Hey Daddy
Loss, glumness, and hurt have you read the poem Hey Daddy ? Jesse Debenport expresses extensive
misery because he lost his father, but we were never told what happened to him. I believe his father
left the family, but intends to still have a relationship with his son. First, I believe the father left
because the way Jesse expresses his emotions makes me infer that his father can still return, but it s a
little uncomfortable to go back to a family that he left. In the poem, Hey Daddy (Please Come Back)
By Jesse Debenport, Jesse states with strong desire, I ll try and set aside at least one day a week... So
we can hop in the truck and go four wheeling. This shows me that Jesse s father is still alive because a
dead father can t go four wheeling anywhere. This also tells me that his father can still come back, if
they can still go four wheeling together. Jesse also states, Remind me to give you a hug goodnight I
never want you to feel like I m leaving you out to dry... Again, this tells me his father is still alive and
can t be dead. This also makes me feel like his father ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jesse states in the first paragraph, There are a couple of things you missed... Here are a couple of
things I want you to remember. All of these quotes from the poem tell me that his father is still alive.
This quote also makes me believe that it was his first time meeting his father and he wants his father
to remember somethings about him. Also the title tells us his father can come back because he wants
his father to return. People might believe that his father died, but it doesn t add up. Jesse told his father
his feelings and seems to intend for him to read his letter, and there are no mailboxes at gravesites. It
also can t be an emotional letter just to express himself because Jesse talks about asking his father to
spend time with him. This all shows that his father can t be

  • 2. Latent Defect Essay Mike Christensen December 10, 2009 CM 385: Section 1 Final Paper How Can A Contractor Avoid Liability for Defective Work? Every contract created produces a margin of risk and a platform for success. Depending on how one manages the risk assumed, one may either excel and shine in the glory of success or drown and disappear in the raging waters of error. Nevertheless, to become great one must take that step of faith into the flailing wind. As said by Leo F. Buscalglia, The person who risks nothing does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn... and grow... and live. It was six years after the completion of the Saratoga Terrace apartment complex when a child fell off the back porch stoop and received severe injuries. The parents of the child claimed that the contractor and owner were responsible due to their negligence in constructing the stoop without a protective railing. The court referenced back to the Campo v. Schofield case, which states, We have not yet reached the state where a manufacturer is under the duty of making a machine accident proof or foolproof. The court also noted that the complex had been used without accident for six years and that it did not conceal any dangers or defective work that would not have been found by a reasonable inspection. The outcome of the case proved that the pleading did not contain any allegation of a defect, and that the liability rested upon the parents of the child. Consequently, the phrase Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware) protects the contractor from future claims as long as the defective work existed at the time of inspection and could have reasonably been identified. Nevertheless, a contractor must also understand that if the defective work is classified as a latent defect, the risk and liability associated with this defect may be transferred back to the contractor. Therefore, a contractor must understand what a latent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Social and Political Influences Leading up to the First World War Romanticism began in the closing decades of the Eighteenth Century. Influencing all spheres of life, pervading the populace of Europe and the first half of the Nineteenth Century with idealistic, yet unreal sentiment. Contradicting any romantic or idealistic belief were the uniform followers of rationalism and conservatism, descendents of Puritanism that arose in the Church of England during the early 17th Century. Within the space of thirty years, Germany had gone from being a cluster of insignificant states to the most powerful state in Europe full of nationalistic sentiment, patriotic people and militaristic Kaisers. It is easily forgotten that Italy, similar to Germany is only a recently created state. Little over a century ago Italy was divided into five main groups, all subject to political arrangements made by their foreign rulers. It took 21 years of resistance in the name of Irredentism, to oust the puppet Autocratic government. Liberal views were enough, Liberal views and the invasion of Austria(1848), and for a second time in 1859, the invasions were used in order to establish the nation, and to expel Austrian emigrants from northern Italy, the theme of unifying ones nation through military action has been exemplified again. As a result of the imaginary world, a system of widely accepted social norms and laws are established and followed by all involved in the culture. However, I believe that although the imaginary world does influence the culture as a whole, the concept of free will, agency and individualism plays a part in how each person chooses to interpret the social norms and therefore live their life. Taking the example of the Himba culture, I will be exploring the different aspects of the imaginary world, individual interpretations of the imaginary world, and then looking at BYU imaginary world to prove that each culture, regardless of location, is influenced by an imaginary world as a whole but individuals can be influenced differently due to their relationships with others. Like many cultures, religion is often the biggest influence in developing the social norms of a society, especially morally accepted norms. The Himba people are a passionate, traditional people who are loyal to their God, Mukuru. The painting can be found today in the Contarelli Chapel in the french church San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome. It is located in the chapel with two other paintings by Caravaggio, all about St. Matthew. The painting is telling a story from the Gospel of Matthew. It shows the moment that Jesus tells Matthew to follow him and become one of his apostles. The main characters in this painting are Matthew, Jesus, and Peter. Caravaggio s hand placement for Jesus is very similar to Michelangelo s hand in his The Creation of Adam painting. This could have been done intentional. Michelangelo painted God as he awakens Adam and now Caravaggio has painted Jesus reaching out to Matthew as he is recreating his life. It is hard to tell exactly who Jesus is pointing at since there are five men seated in front of him. However, the intensity of the light, probably from a door that was opened, takes the viewers eyes right to the bearded mans hand which he is pointing at himself in shock. Matthew is surprised that Jesus would pick someone like him. Caravaggio is showing his audience that even if you believe you are not holy enough, everyone is able to follow Christ. He gives his audience the ability to relate to St. Matthew. This tells us that he is Matthew. At this moment, Matthew has to decide if he wants to stay and continue to be a tax collector, or follow Jesus. • 24. Errors And Expectations Summary The next chapter of the book Errors Expectations by Mina Shaughnessy discusses spelling. Shaughnessy asserts that there are many reasons why a basic writing student will misspell words. These reasons include being unfamiliar with the structure of words, mis pronunciation, not being familiar with homophones, failing to remember or see words, and not having a firm grasp on spelling rules. Shaughnessy spends the majority of the chapter giving suggestions on how to help students improve their spelling. She lines out several key ways in which this can be done. First of all, a teacher must believe that her student can become a good speller. If she thinks that spelling cannot be taught and simply notes errors in the margin of her student s paper, her student will get the idea that he is a lost cause and will give up on trying to improve his spelling. Shaughnessy s viewpoints coincide with those of Constance Weaver in her book Grammar to Enrich and Enhance Writing. In Chapter 9 of her book, Weaver discusses how to teach English Language Learners to edit their errors, a very similar subject to Shaughnessy s chapter on spelling. Individual animals behave differently from each other for extrinsic reasons, and this behavioral variation is the raw substrate for evolutionary change. You might not know that Henry Ford did not start out as a successful producer of automobiles. After building his first car, the Quadricycle. In 1899 he formed the Detroit Automobile Company, which quickly failed after only a few vehicles were produced. Henry and some of his original investors regrouped and formed the Henry Ford Company which quickly ran into problems as well. Henry Ford was dismissed by his board of directors from the company that carried his name because of his inability to bring a car to production. The company was reorganized as the Cadillac Motor Car Company under the engineering leadership of Henry Leland. In 1903 Henry Ford felt he was ready to market an automobile for the public and the Ford Motor Company was incorporated, this time with only $28,000 in cash put up by a new group of investors. That original investment was spent down to $300 before the company s first car was sold, but from that time on the company was a success. Throughout the story the narrator, Rose s sister, shows the difficulties of living with mental illness not only for Rose s family, but also for Rose. A common obstacle for the family is getting Rose proper care; this is difficult because the family could not find long term insurance or doctor. In Silver Water , Amy Bloom makes a point about how mental illness is treated; the specific point she makes is that mental illness is not taken as seriously as it should be. This is shown through how difficult it is for Rose to receive proper treatment. One of the first examples of mistreatment is that in Silver Water Rose is pulled from her halfway home and is taken off of her medicine so that her family could switch to an insurance that can better support the long term treatment she needs. This leaves her parents struggling to take care of her at home while she is nowhere close to stable. This is going to be difficult not all bad, but difficult for the whole family... The route Golding took to writing this book is in a form of an allegory. An allegory is a story that has a hidden meaning behind it, and this takes analyzing the text to figure the secret meaning. Jack s first order for his hunters is to find meat, and it is successfully done because he kills a female sow. In order to lure the rest of the boys to his tribe Jack offers food ... and my hunters will protect you from the beast. Who will join my tribe? (Golding 134).
