Similarities Between Populists And Progressives
Of Populists and Progressives Many critics of history have long argued that Populists were far less
successful than Progressives in reaching their objectives, which is supported by the difference in
beliefs of the two groups and the results of their distinct reform attempts. Despite not being as
effective as the Progressives, the Populists did succeed in getting several of their ideas acknowledged
by the government. Unfortunately for the political group, a majority of the Populist demands remained
unrecognized or barely enforced. On the other hand, the Progressive movement resulted in several
societal and government reforms, as well as a new interest in the wellbeing of the general population.
While the Populists and Progressives shared similar objectives, the ... Show more content on

While the Populists were able to inspire some more government involvement in the economy with
their currency concerns, the Progressives both reformed the government into a less corruptible system
and called for more government participation in reducing the growing power of certain industries.
Similarly, although the Populists managed to bring attention to the plight of the workers, the
Progressives, with their wider range of supporters due to their broader appeal, was able to pass
workplace regulations and to organize institutes to help foreigners assimilate into American society.
Finally, as the Populists failed to convince the nation to address most of their most basic beliefs and
goals, the Progressives succeeded in obtaining government recognition of their side of a long standing
racial dissension. In conclusion, historians are correct in believing that the Populists were less
successful than the Progressives in attaining their goals because of the vast differences between the
two results of the groups reform

Water Purification Process
Reason for the process
There are many problems in the world that people face today. One of the biggest concerns is the lack
of clean and drinkable water for human use. Over 70% of the earth is covered with water, so the need
for drinkable, usable and clean water is inevitable. Purified water is also used for medicinal purposes
as well industrial. Clean water is used in making medicine and also used in food products. Water can
contain thousands of contaminants like waste discharges from industrial or municipal use and runoff
from agriculture use. Many chemical industries around the world focus on the process of water
purification. With the help of this process we are able to get clean water for medical, pharmacological
and even third world countries.
History of the process.
There is not only one specific process of purifying water. The method of purifying water is based on
what the water is being used for. The oldest methods of water purification date back to about 2000
BC. At that time they had some idea of water purification that involved heat. Boiling water is one of
the simplest methods of making water drinkable. As time went on people began to experiment with
sand filtering. Once the microscope was invented it allowed us to see small material particles in the
water that ultimately furthered the process of water purification. In the 1700s the first domestic water
filters were created, sort of like what we use today but they were made of wool, charcoal and sponge.

Innovations In The Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire strengthened through legal innovations such as the creation of the Code of
Justinian. The code was a collection up many edicts and rulings regarding law by previous emperors,
which unified and organized the empire. Prior to the code, the Byzantine Empire s laws were
multitudinous and very confusing. Furthermore, military innovations saved the capital from the Arabs
who laid a major siege. A napalm like weapon called Greek fire was used to destroy Arab ships at the
coasts. This new weapon contained chemicals that ignited as it touched water. It helped drive back the
Arab naval forces. Also, the empire expanded religious innovations through the building of new
churches such as the Hagia Sophia. It was an achievement for Christianity and engineering. No other
building in the world at the time could support a dome so large. However, it later became a mosque
when the Ottoman Turks conquered the Byzantine Empire. Caesaropapism became evident in
Byzantine Empire as it incorporated the state and the church in society. However, the state was
superior than the church. For example, the emperor appointed the leaders of the church ... Show more

The government became an important factor that impacted the Byzantine Empire s trade. The
government controlled special interest rates on popular items such as silk. Silk was only bought from
China at the time; however, silk worms were smuggled and the Byzantine Empire took advantage of
this. The state made a government monopoly through the manufacturing of silk in imperial factories.
They became the sole provider of silk in the Byzantine Empire. However, merchants were allowed to
buy silk outside of Constantinople, but they were not allowed to travel outside of the city. Finally,
coinage played a huge role to the empire s trade, because it allowed organization within the empire
that contributed to the economic

Challenges to the UK Health Care System Essay
Introduction In line with the majority of other developed countries, the United Kingdom (UK) has
offered its citizens a universal health care system that is free at the point of service. Funded primarily
by taxation, the system is popular and efficient. However, along with most other health care systems
around the world, it faces a series of challenges if it is to maintain viability, in the twenty first century.
These issues include; long waiting times, an aging population, funding challenges and the increasing
cost of technology. History of Health Care in the UK The UK is a sovereign country of almost
61,000,000 people comprising the nations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A highly

It also monitors the quality of services provided and develops new policies. The performance of the
NHS is also monitored by the Health Care Commission, an independent executive agency that
performs annual reviews and ratings, and investigates complaints. According to Johnson and Stoskopf
(2008) there are a number of dimensions for measuring health care systems. The three most frequent
include: population health measures, system efficiency measures, and patient perceptions (p.74). Other
clinical measurements commonly used include infant mortality rates and life expectancy. The UK has
an infant mortality rate of 4.93 deaths per 1,000 live births, and an average life expectancy of 78.85
years. Funding for the NHS is a combination of private and public sources. All legal UK residents
have access to the NHS and pay a payroll tax, which equates approximately to 10% of earnings.
Although health care provided by the NHS is largely free, there are fees for certain services such as
prescriptions, dental and optician services, which are paid by all citizens who are working and make
more than minimum wage. Recent Reforms In 2000, an effort was made by the UK government to
resolve certain inequalities that had developed within the NHS by releasing the NHS Plan of 2000.
This plan greatly increased spending on employee pay, infrastructure, and access to services. Despite
almost doubling spending in a ten year period,

Mystery Of Iniquity Poem Analysis

Mystery of Iniquity
The first line in the poem is a phrase that is found in Bible: 2 Thessalonians 2:7 For the mystery of
iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. Which
means the lawlessness, discrimination, and immoral is already working. Lauryn Hill is rightly
regarded as one of the most exciting and original talents of her generation. As singer, songwriter and
rapper, she first came to prominence as a member of the hip hop trio the Fugees, before launching a
short lived but impactful solo career. She is also regarded as one of music s lost geniuses, avoiding the
limelight and the studio to raise her five children with Rohan Marley, son of reggae legend Bob. Right
now, with a life that has involved no shows at concerts and a prison sentence, it doesn t look like she ll
be adding to her five Grammy awards (The Biography.com website, 2017). The poem speaks about
how messed up and crooked the court system are towards African Americans.
Inequity is lack of fairness or justice. The history of inequity is something people is running after but
will never be able to catch. Lauryn Hill describes it as The American Dream and how it is creating an
illusion around the U.S. The illusion is making people obsessed with success and allowing the
government control them. This paper will focus on the injustice of African Americans. Lauryn Hill
have great songs that inspire many music artists. In the Mystery of Iniquity Lauryn Hill talks about the
history of inequity which is exclusionary, discrimination, and immoral behavior.
Mystery of Iniquity is one of the powerful poems ever written by Lauryn Hill because she speaks on
exclusionary. Exclusionary is relating to or characterized by the exclusion of something, especially
from a contract or group. When Lauryn Hill talks about the expert witness (the paid authority) the
expert witness gets on the stand and tells the jury what they want to hear. The jury doesn t even bother
to question some of the shaky points. They just want to go home and mostly likely didn t want to be
there in the first place (Genius, 2017). The witness is feeding the jury a story

As Christians today we are faced with many ethical issues living in our society. Every time we turn on
the TV to watch the news, pick up a newspaper and read the headlines, or read a magazine about
world issues we can see situations happening in this world that challenge our morals and ethics. It is
our duty as Christians to know what we believe and where we stand so we can back up our beliefs and
try to interact with this world as morally correct as possible. There are some situations that we have no
control over that appear ethically wrong to us and there is not much we can do if anything at all. At the
same time there are things that we can do to try and reach people in some situations. It is our job to

I am not saying just go to war for any reason we see fit, but have it as a last resort, when the other
person leaves us no choice. For example, Desert Storm, we had to take action against Iraq and Sadam
because he left us no choice. If everyone who was a Christian decided that war was wrong and didn t
fight, then we would have lost the war. As Christians, I believe it is our duty to try to avoid war, but
when it become necessary we must take action. Even though we might not desire to be out on the front
lines with the people who are actually doing the killing and combat, we must support our country. We
can take roles in the army as non combatance if it is necessary for us to actually go out to war, but
whatever we do it is our duty to our country to show support and be involved so we can make sure that
the war is just for what is necessary and not taken out of hand. You see, if we stay out of war then our
country and way of living will be threatened all together, but most of us do not wish to go in headfirst
and kill everyone who opposes us. We just find a median where we can help control what is going on
and seek the best possible outcome for the world in which we live in.
The next topic that we will discuss is the Christian s involvement in matters relating to the division of
church and state and religious liberty. I believe that a

1. How does Gene describe the school when he visits it as an adult?
He described it as, looking oddly newer than it had fifteen years before . Saying it seemed more sedate
then he remembered, more perpendicular and strait laced, the windows seemingly more narrow and
shinier woodwork, seeming as though a coat of varnish had covered everything for preservation.
(Chapter 1, page 1)
What is this an example of? This is an example of imagery.
Why? Gene is describing the school in depth and immense detail, almost taking you to the school as

3. Was jouncing the limb a planned, conscious decision on Gene s part or an impulsive act? I believe
that Gene jouncing the limb was an impulsive act. As he stepped forward, his knees bent, causing him
to jounce the limb accidentally.
Examine the dialogue and events that occurred just before the fall: Finny climbed up the old tree,
Gene right behind. Just before the fall, Finny asked Gene to jump with him, side by side. He said,
Come out a little way, and then we ll jump side by side. As Gene stepped forward, the branch jounced,
and Finny fell. (Chapter 4, pages 51 52.)
4. What does Gene say to Finny about sports? That he is trying to be an assistant crew manager.
(Chapter 6, page 76.)
What does Finny have to say about it? He asks him, What do you want to manage a crew for? What do

me into their family. My sisters have taught me so much already, from how to make a difference in our
campus community to how to use laughter to push through college stress. As I come to the end of my

Reflection On Group Work
This paper will reflect upon the experience of working in a group to produce a poster in partnership
with Lloyd and Kemi. The difficulties and challenges faced will be outlined along with the advantages
and disadvantages of group work. I will seek to be honest about how I felt and will reflect on the final
outcome of our project. Difficulties and Challenges By nature, I am an introvert and deeply reflective.
This at times can be an advantage, allowing me to look at the diamond nature of truth from different
angles. For Group work, however, this is a noticeable hindrance. Working in a group is the last thing I
expected for the first assignment, but I was prepared to take on this challenge and set aside my
negative preconceptions. We began strong, meeting in the Library and immediately delegating tasks. I
arranged to travel to Aylesbury in order to make progress on the project with Lloyd and discovered he
lived five minutes away from my mum! Kemi was unable to join us on this occasion, but we updated
her via Face Time. The project seemed to be gaining traction: we had done research, we had a rough
idea of the content and we were all encouraged by the progress. The first difficulty, however, came in
week 2. I had begun Greek on Mondays and was immediately thrust into a world previously unknown.
It was a thrilling challenge that opened up scores of exegetical insights, but the weekly translation
exercises began to eat away at my time. One of my great weaknesses is the inability

Informative Speech On The Black Sox Scandal
General Purpose: I will inform the class about an event in history.
Specific Purpose: I would like to inform people on the 1919 Black Sox Scandal in Major League
Baseball.
Introduction
Attention Getter: In 2008 the New York Giants won the Super Bowl by defeating the previously
unbeaten New England Patriots in what most sports fans call one of the greatest upsets in sports
history. What would you think if I told you the Patriots lost the game on purpose? They didn t, but in
1919 eight members of the Chicago White Sox conspired to intentionally lose the World Series against
the Cincinnati Reds in what people now refer to as the Black Sox Scandal.
Speaker Credibility:
My uncle is a huge sports buff and he s often talked to me about this specific scandal. I remember
growing up and still hearing how upset this scandal made him. Its something that still prevalent in
todays sports.

know about some drama within the sports industry.
Specific purpose:
Today I want to share with you the story of the black sox scandal of 1919.
Preview of Main Points:
I will talk to you about why the Whitesoxs were the favorites, why the Whitesoxs players didn t like
their management, and how that affected how baseball changed his management.

cities believed they would make quick work of the Reds.
I. Throughout the time leading up to the 1919 World Series, reporters in both Chicago and Cincinnati
spoke about how good the World Series would be, and the odds makers listed the White Sox as heavy

Cambodi The Country Of Cambodia
In the southern portion of the Indochina peninsula in Southeast Asia lays the small country of
Cambodia, a country that has been in economic turmoil for decades. One economic downfall after
another has led to about a third of the nation existing below the poverty line which was at 2,473 Riel
or 61 cents per day in 2010. Cambodia s population is estimated to be around 15,000,000 people. So
that leaves about 5,000,000 in poverty. The current struggle Cambodia has to face is the future. The
private sector needs to create enough jobs to handle Cambodia s demographic imbalance. Nearly half
of the population is under 21. Due to the poverty in this country children are victims of
malnourishment from a very young age. As you can imagine, growing up in conditions such as these
lead to impacts on their education and learning skills. This puts Cambodia s youth in a highly
vulnerable position as it would it any country. Migrating to the urban areas without any money,
knowledge, or support these youth get pushed into a life of alcoholism, drug addictions, sex trade,
HIV exposure, theft, and killing. There is an estimate of about 24,000 children who work and live on
the streets. Cambodia is a society where it is not common to share your family problems. They are
considered private issues and no one really cares to hear about them. Sharing things like this is
considered a weakness. This could be a cause or effect of the lack of social services and counseling in
Cambodia. The education

Comparing Philosophy And Cosmological Approach To The...
Natural Theology is when both philosophy and theology work together as one to provide more logical
proof and understanding through nature that God actually does exist, as opposed to leaning on an
individual faith, revelation, experience or religion. Natural theology is the reasonable idea so to speak
that God exists and has always existed. This is examined through our natural understanding and
observation of nature, how things happen in the world and even through our own existence as human
beings. The main differences within Philosophy and Theology is that Philosophy for example is the
study and the knowledge of how the world works and of whom we, as humans are through reality and
the world we live in meanwhile, Theology is the study of God and religion which happens to be
completely different with how philosophy views God and religion. Although theology and philosophy
are completely different, when both come together, Natural theology comes about providing a new
approach of thought in the existence of God. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

however, afterwards, philosopher Immanuel Kant argued that simply because there is the thought that
existence is perfect, does not give us proof or enough information to say that in fact, there is a divine

The Macondo Blowout in The Gulf of Mexico
Introduction The Gulf of Mexico (GoM) harbors a rich biota with ecological and high commercial
significance (Yanez Arancibia and Day 2004). In this ecosystem, the microorganisms are the primary
consumers and play major role in the biogeochemical cycling of organic matters (Pomeroy 1974). The
GoM ecosystem is often perturbed by natural calamities or human activities affecting the microbial
community structure (Kryachko et al. 2012) and the associated nutrient cycling at all trophic levels
(Pomeroy 1974; Camilli et al. 2010; Atlas and Hazen 2011). On April 20, 2010 the Macondo Blowout,
the largest accidental oil spill in the GoM and the second largest in the world, released an estimated
4.9 million barrels of crude oil (Atlas and Hazen 2011). This significant ecological perturbation of the
sea and coastal region has led to negative impacts in local fishing, aquaculture and tourism (National
Health Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (US) Gulf Ecology Division 1999; Yanez
Arancibia and Day 2004; Arreguin Sanchez et al. 2004; Ritchie and Keller 2008). Since the
occurrence of the oil spill, most studies used molecular approaches including NextGen sequencing

Summary Of Philip Larkin s Fiesta 1980
The way parents raise children may affect them while growing up and this will be transferred over
generations and it s most likely to never end. Being punished as a young child, life seemed harsh and
uneasy. The way parents would yell at you, tell you what to do, what not to do, and they always
seemed to have gotten in the way of doing what us children wanted to do but it emotionally affects the
personality of children while growing up for good or bad. In the poem This Be The Verse by Philip
Larkin, Larkin expresses his emotions in a strong and direct lenguage towards his parents and the way
they judge and blame him for it s mistakes. His strong lenguage demonstrates with no doubt us that
parents have a negative effect on their children and it affects them drastically. Junot Diaz s short story
Fiesta, 1980 gives an insight into the everyday life of a lower class family, a family with a troubled
young boy, Yunior and a strong, abusive father, Papi. Bad parent child relationships could lead to
depression, low self steem and children could be more prone to criminal behavior. Jamaica Kincaid s
short story Girl illustrates gender discrimination, receiving the instructions from her mother on how to
behave and act to not be judge. It illustrates the high level of submissive in women s there was in her
culture.

War Propaganda Song Essay
The songs from World War I range from dark humor to sarcastic attempts to bitter complaints about
soldier s lifestyles during war. Based on what I ve heard and read, most of the lyrics are propaganda
for young men to join the war. These songs usually portray the conditions of soldiers in the war in a
good light. Another significant portion are love songs that soldiers sing to remind them of their wife
that they left at home with their children. Finally, a very small portion is the the anti war songs that are
strictly prohibited in music halls, the most popular form of popular song, where music is played for

when they think they are going to be able to get down with her and her other friends.
One last example is Over There sung by Henry Burr:
Johnnie, get your gun, get your gun, get your gun,
Take it on the run, on the run, on the run,
Hear them calling you and me, ev ry son of liberty
Hurray right away, no delay, go today
Make your Daddy glad to have had such a lad,
Tell your sweetheart not to pine, to be proud her boy s in line The last two lines show the pride
soldiers inspire in others when they fight in the war, making it very ideal for those who want to
impress their parents and wives. Songs like these have had a huge impact on societies all over the
world because it is a form of entertainment and people listen to songs to pass time. In turn, they get
the song s messages and apply for the military.

The Idea of Terrorism
The world changed on September 11, 2001 when hijackers from a group called Al Qaeda sent planes
into New York City s Twin Towers and the Pentagon in Washington DC. In total, 3,000 people died,
the majority citizens and not all from the United States, but at least 90 countries. Responding to this
act was a global War on Terrorism, which resulted in an invasion of Afghanistan, the U.S. Patriot Act,
and several civil and social changes in American society. More than anything else, though, U.S.
security policy came under intense scrutiny and a new Cabinet Level Department was formed,
Homeland Security. Congress also reacted by authorizing the use of military force against any
individual, group, or State that participated or had any relation to the 9/11 attacks. The changes made
to the American security system because of 9/11 were vast, and affected citizens at home and abroad,
with certain groups fearful that civil liberties were now less important than security. In fact, the Patriot
Act provides governmental agencies with extraordinary legal means to conduct surveillance from the
Internet, emails, telephones, and other communication devices; to search and gather data, perform
analysis, and act without a Court warrant if there is a threat present. The technology known as
carnivore is an example of this. Carnivore sifts through millions of emails and electronic
communications to find keywords that might indicate potential terrorist threats. This also allows

The TSA also has been accused for many cases of baggage theft. The good that got stolen are: laptops,

What Are The Pros And Cons Of The Internet
The Internet, a Good Invention or a Bad One At All?
The Internet has been developed for two decades. It provides a new platform for goods and services to
exchange among the world (Morozov, 2010). There is no doubt that the Internet becomes one part of
our daily life, especially for those developed countries. People cannot live without it because of its
wide usage. However, the Internet causes some negative impacts to our life as well as to our society.
In order to discuss whether the Internet helps in developing a better life to us, this essay will begin
with examining the pros of the Internet on both the social relationship and the development of the
Internet. Then, it will consider its cons and will conclude that the Internet is a modern trend to provide
a better life to us as well as our next generation.
As long as we mention modern communication, the Internet will occur to ... Show more content on

Colonialism, By Lois Tyson Essay
Colonialism, the hunger to expand and conquer causes the world, becomes an endless arena for the
fight for dominance and inevitable discrimination that follows. Even once colonization ends, the
natives are not immediately free because of the aftermath that remains in the dust colonization leaves
behind.
One inevitable result of colonization is the establishment of social hierarchy that continues into
postcolonial society. In Using Colonialism/ Postcolonialism Critical Theory, Lois Tyson eloquently
explains the consequences of colonialism and the different facets of Postcolonialism. First, in a
colonial social hierarchy, unquestionably, the members of the colonizing culture occupy the top rungs
of the ladder (Tyson 248 9). Meanwhile, those who occupy the bottom rungs of the colonialist social
ladder whether their inferior status is based on race... or any other cultural factor are called subalterns,
who are then othered by the colonized, who believe their dominance and authority is validation for
their discrimination (Tyson 249). Through othering, the savage is... therefore, not considered fully
human (Tyson 248). This mindset does not belong purely to the colonists, but applies to the colonized
as well. To elaborate, Tyson uses the term colonized consciousness to describe subalterns who
internalize... the colonialist belief that those different from a society s dominant culture are inferior
(Tyson 249). Consequently, subalterns look to the dominant class s culture to

Analysis Of Franny And Zooey
The Glass Family, consisting of seven children and a mother and father, were all a part of a quizzing
radio show known as It s a Wise Child . These seven children, all contributing to the show at some
point of their childhood grew up having high expectations, and more often than not, being unable to
meet them. In Franny and Zooey, J. D. Salinger portrays how success and fame at a young age has
lasting negative effects on children and their families. The now grown kids and elderly parents both
have issues associated with the drama of growing up popular. The family s relationship is estranged
due to the burden of stress exerted on the siblings. The children s lives are now dependent on the
mentality that they need to perfect everything. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The story begins with Franny meeting her boyfriend and going out to eat. Franny begins an argument

with ego and continual criticism of herself and others (Lundquist 1). Franny is later seen losing her
composure in the bathroom, but after shufflings through her bag, she finds a green book, holds it
close, and calms down. The green book is later revealed to be a religious book about a traveling man
who recites the Jesus Prayer. Franny is rushed home after this meltdown and stays with her Mother
and brother, Zooey. In one scene, Franny tells Zooey I want to talk to Seymour (Salinger 151)
although Seymour committed suicide many years before. Franny is having many breakdowns,
mentally, physically, and religiously. Franny s need to fit in but also be the best comes from a place of
superiority from her earlier years on It s a Wise Child . The second part of the novel takes us through
Zooey s life as a young twenty five year old actor. He still lives with his parents and has a crude

with his childhood career of fame to become an actor. As an actor he has freed himself to play any

Should Premarital Agreements Be Treated the Same as...
Should Premarital Agreements be Treated the Same as Contracts? Contract law is relatively consistent
regarding whether a contract was actually made and whether the parties involved can be legally held
to the contract or not. This is primarily due to the fact that contract law proceeds from law handed
down from centuries of civil and common law cases. Basically, two parties have to agree to the terms
of the cited contract, after the offer is made and accepted (both parties have had time to review and
make changes to the contract, although this process does not always occur), and they have either
orally agreed or signed some form of written contract. It can be argued in a court afterword that there
was not sufficient consideration or that one party coerced the other into an agreement, but these are
usually handled at the signing of the contract. This process is time honored and, as said, has been in
place for a long time. But, new types of contracts occur at times and they have a different sort of
accounting by the courts. One of these types of contracts is that generally called prenuptial,
antenuptial or premarital (Standler, 2009). This paper looks at prenuptial agreements and using the
case of Simeone v. Simeone tries to determine some of the pros and cons of treating these agreements
more like regular contracts. Simeone v. Simeone was a divorce court case brought by Catherine E
Walsh Simeone against Frederick A. Simeone (Simeone v. Simeone, 1990). The issue was

The Benefits and Pitfalls of the Internet
Using the internet is becoming popular nowadays since many people spend their time working on it,
but is using the internet beneficial for them? It may have some advantages and disadvantages as most
new technologies do, and some of these advantages and disadvantages can be seen on online
assignment submission, online social networking and online news sites.
Pete Bridge and Rob Appleyard (2005), senior lecturers in radiotherapy and oncology at Sheffield
Hallam University in the UK, compared the way that paper based assignments are submitted with the
online equivalent within the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) in a study. 47 first year
undergraduate radiotherapy physics students were the volunteers, and surveys were used to gather
their submission and receiving feedback experience. The same group of students was required to
compare their online submission perception with another assignment submission, which was a paper
based assignment. Students were asked to compare the quality of the submission process based on
ease of compilation (Bridge Appleyard, 2005).
The results indicated some positive and negative sides of using the internet to submit assignments.
88% of the students reported that online assignment submission can help the save time, and many said
they found it financially beneficial. In addition, 93% of students preferred receiving their feedback
online rather than printed and handed to them (Bridge Appleyard, 2005).

Brave New World Blueprint Analysis
Brave New World: Warning or Blueprint?
We live in a world where science dominates. Medical intervention constantly rules over nature. Brave
New World, written in Great Britain between World Wars when people were prospering, technology
was advancing, and pop culture was thriving, is a dystopian novel in which all of these societal
changes are magnified. Upon first glance at Aldous Huxley s famed novel Brave New World, it may
seem as though Huxley is issuing a warning to readers about the detrimental effects science, pop
culture, and consumerism can have on a society. Upon closer evaluation of Huxley s other writings as
well as Huxley s biography, it becomes clear that perhaps Huxley was not warning society, but rather
providing a blueprint for a utopian society that he hoped to see develop in the future. Aldous Huxley,
as is revealed by analysis of his later works, wrote Brave New World as a blueprint for society which
lays out how to create a perfect utopia, an idea which contradicts the popular belief that the book
warns against excessive science and eugenics.
Class structure is a major component in Brave New World. Everybody is predestined to their social
class. Those who are made to be Alphas in their test tubes are destined to be the intellectually superior
leaders of society, while those who are made to be Epsilons in their test tubes are destined to be the
intellectually inferior workers of society whose jobs are greatly undesirable. The classes are distinct,

Opportunity in Ladies Kidsʹ Segment
As footwear retailing in India has remained focused on menʹs shoes, there exists a whale of
opportunity in the exclusive ladiesʹ and kidsʹ footwear segment with no organized retailing chain
having a national presence in either of these categories. This is especially surprising as in line with
global trends women are the key decision makers for buying footwear. Of the total footwear market,
ladiesʹ shoes account for almost 40 percent though the unorganised segment constitutes 8090 percent
of this market, indicating a significant marketing opportunity for organised players. With the Indian
woman becoming more brand conscious as opposed to the past state of being product conscious, more
and more internationally renowned players are expected to enter the Indian market to fill this need
gap. Further, given Indiaʹs very young population, the market for childrenʹs footwear is also attractive

Mrs. Vilato Eng. 003 7, February 2012 College: The Greatest Decision You Can Make In the United
States today, there is no more certain investment than a college education (Carnevale and Melton).
Education has always been a major component of American society. One can only go so far without an
education, and the more education and knowledge someone has, the better their chances of being
successful. Some people believe a high school education is enough, and it is, enough to land a job at a

In reference to jobs 55% [said] it was very useful in helping them prepare for a job or career . The data
from the study supports my assertions of what college provides students with, which is a strong
foundation for joining the work force. College also gives students connections. While taking part in
activities students make friends and meet people with all kinds of goals for the future. These
connections make life easier after college. Students meet friends that have connections to internships,
jobs, summer programs and with the help of their friends, students can find themselves in one of these
if not more resume building opportunities. Meeting new people and participating in activities make
students appear very diverse in turn, more appealing to employers. Another benefit of college is the
education that one receives. Not only does one learn about a specific field that other people only have
general to no knowledge about, but they essentially become a specialist in a few areas. College forces
people to pick their main interests and focus on them. The further they take their education, the more
knowledgeable they become in particular fields. Picking a major and minor (sometimes double major
and double minor) narrows choices when employers are seeking workers because they want people
with a specific skill set, and specific knowledge. Most degrees can give students the opportunity to
obtain high paying jobs. Now, while it is true that right out of college

He notes: The decade following the Civil War saw a division in the Church in the North. One point of
contention was missionary societies between Isaac Errett and Benjamin Franklin. The Louisville Plan
restructured the Society with the aim of maintaing peace in the brotherhood (Humble 57). The
restructuring however ultimately failed for lack of funds. The question of instrumental music was

instruments as mere expediency. Some, such as McGarvey and Moses E. Lard, stood fast in opposing
the use of instruments. Another conservative, Benjamin Franklin, said: Better is poor singing where
love is, than the grandest tones of the organ and hatred therewith. (Humble 60). In 1906 the Churches
of Christ and the Christian Church were officially listed separately in the United States Census. This
was mostly based on the use of instruments or not. Humble notes: In 1896 J.D. Tant estimated that
more than a hundred Texas congregations had divided over the use of instrumental music. (Humble

Coleman And Bourdieu
Three different views on social capital are particularly considered by scholars. They are the ideas of
Pierre Bourdieu, James Coleman, and Robert Putnam.
Pierre Bourdieu
A concurrently developed theory of social capital came from French Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu
(1985). Bourdieu s (1985) use of the term social capital is an explicit attempt to understand the
production of classes and class divisions. Social capital and relationships are never disconnected from
capital. Capital for Bourdieu (1985), is simultaneously economic as well as a set of power relations
that constitute a variety of realms and social interactions though normally non economic. He was
interested to find the ways to reproduce society and to understand how the supreme position of
dominant classes are retained. He could not explain this by economics alone, and he is well known for
his discussion of cultural capital. Also he tried to learn how people utilized cultural knowledge to
place them in the hierarchy. He wrote a famous book, Distinction (1984) a detailed study of middle
class taste and how they identify themselves with those who are above than them on the social ladder
and the difference from those below .

simultaneously any or all of them. Coleman sought to link the ideas of economic and sociology theory.
His way of study leads to a broader view of social capital. According to him social capital is not a
stock owned by elite groups but also the benefits of all commodities can be utilized by the

Examples Of Cognitive Dissonance
Cognitive dissonance
An Example of cognitive dissonance is that at my house, my cats can sometimes be tough to see when
you are walking, and thus people end up stepping on them or kicking them. The cognitive dissonance
here would be that people often like to say your cat walked into my path or your cat tried to trip me.
When this happens people are having two conflicting views at the same exact time, theory often
suggests that the brain wants to eliminate dissonance whenever possible. The brain does this by
changing the way you feel about or perceive certain things, or in other words, changing your attitudes
and beliefs. So instead of just admitting they made a mistake in kicking the cat and feeling apologetic,
people use cognitive dissonance to turn the situation into the cat s fault for getting in their way, thus
making them feel better about themselves.
Rationalization
By far the most common rationalization I hear is when people don t get into a school they really
wanted to, or don t get a job they want, and then proceed to say something like That s ok, I didn t want
to go there anyway or It s fine, that school wasn t the place for me . Rationalizations are often used to
avoid admitting some sort of disappointment, for this reason it is a very ... Show more content on

Repression is when someone unconsciously blocks thoughts, feelings, impulses, or actions that are
considered wrong or unacceptable. A very common example of repression is a repressed memory.
Sometimes if people have a damaging or scary event as a child, their memory of that event will
become blocked or fade over time, thus becoming repressed. Repressed is defined as being kept
suppressed and unconscious in one s mind . This is your brains way of protecting you from this image
or memory and thus this can be a very powerful defense mechanism because your body is almost able
to shield you from the hurt, damage, or pain that this memory has

Full Body Scanners in Airports
Full Body Scanners in Airports A full body scanner that is a device that is able to detect objects hidden
under clothing by constructing a full 3 D image of a person, complete with detailed body contours.
There are presently two types of scanning technology that are used in full body scanners: millimeter
wave scanners and backscatter scanners. A millimeter wave scanner is able to use radio waves that are
of tremendously high frequencies, which are decoded in order to produce a 3 D image. A backscatter
scanner makes use of high energy rays that scatter when they hit solid materials. This allows a
backscatter scanner to generate a detailed image of the person being scanned. Both scanners are
effective at detecting contraband that may be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They say the low level beam does deliver a slight dose of radiation to the body but because the beam
concentrates on the skin, one of the most radiation sensitive organs of the human body, that dose may
be up to twenty times higher than first estimated. University of California biochemist David Agard is
quoted saying While the dose would be safe if it were distributed through the volume of the entire
body, the dose to the skin may be dangerously high. He adds, Ionizing radiation such as the X rays
used in these scanners have the potential to induce chromosome damage, and that can lead to cancer.
People with medical implants such as pacemakers should avoid electromagnetic generating pulse body
scanners as they can significantly alter the waveform of the pacemaker pulse. Travelers are not
informed that they are in the line to get a full body scan until they actually see it in the process. Once a
traveler questions it, the TSA becomes suspicious and the traveler could be interrogated. There are
issues with the lack of signs in the airports informing travelers about these full body scanners and the
lack of signs informing travelers that you can opt out of them for another form of screening method. A
pro of a full body scanner is it detects items such as non metallic weapons and explosives not picked
up by metal detectors but the body scanner only scans surfaces. So, will cavity searches be routine

What Are The Metaphors In Lord Of The Ring
The Lord of The Ring s trilogy is considered one of the greatest Hollywood films in the century. These
films have broken several movie records for the Hollywood industry. Also, these movies relate with an
all age audience because of the great development of all the characters in the movie. To be clear, some
would say that they feel like they know the characters after watching the trilogy. In my experience
after watching the trilogy, it left me in aww because the different aspects of film it portrayed.
Nevertheless, after watching the trilogy twice I became more familiar with some metaphors the author,
J.R Tolkien, was trying to reveal. Overall, these metaphors can be seen through the Ring, Gandalf s
role and the friendship between Frodo and Sam.
Notably the ring is a symbol of pure evil in these trilogies. In these films, anyone that stumbled upon
the ring would be overcome by its power and will try to take it. For an example, you can see the power
of the ring dividing fellowships throughout these films. To be specific in the beginning of the third
movie golem was overcome by the rings power, which led him to kill his best friend. The metaphor of
the ring can be classified as the evil in a person s life. Furthermore, J.R Tolkien ... Show more content

Throughout the trilogy Frodo and Sam both developed an unbreakable bond. For example, Sam bared
through Frodo s burden of carrying the ring to the end. This is a great friendship for it shows that Sam
never gave up on his friend. Also, Sam saved Frodo from the orcs even though Frodo hurt Sam by
telling him to go away. This shows a strong bond of friendship even under the trials through their
adventures. In the second film Frodo tell Sam I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all
things, Sam. This is a good example of how a friendship should be. As shown above, the bond
between Frodo and Sam is a great role model for a foundation of

The Jungle Essay example
The book, The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair had a major impact on the way the world saw the American
Meat Packing Industry. While Upton Sinclair originally intended to appeal to the public s heart
concerning the conditions and the treatment of workers, it was obvious that the book had more of an
impact on the meat industry. The public was outraged by the stories of waste meat being canned as
wholesome meat, workers falling into vats and being processed as lard, and dead animals being
processed when the inspectors weren t looking. Upton was quoted in saying, I aimed at the public s
heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach (Kantor 1976). The impact that this fictitious novel had,
can still be seen today. After the outrage of hearing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On numerous occasions, the packing companies were tried for selling bad products, but the packing
companies always came out on top (Yeager 1906). Many people felt that the trials were unfair and that
the Beef Trust had its hands in the politics that lead to the false innocence of the packing industries
(Yeager 1906). In 1902, Dr. Harvey Wiley created the Division of chemistry, also known as the Poison
Squad. This Division of Chemistry analyzed products that were created by the packing companies.
They looked for any kind of dyes, preservatives, or adulterants that may have been added to the meats.
The Division of Chemistry found, in the numerous products sampled, that the meat was wholesome
and contained no adulterants, dyes, or any preservatives other than the types and amounts that were
allowed. They also inspected meat packing plants to find that the sanitation was acceptable in almost
all cases (Young 1908). The book gave examples of potted ham, which was said to be the waste of
beef or pork. The pieces of meat were too small for any other product so they were gathered together
and made into its own product. Some of the parts included tripe, which were supposedly dyed so that
they would not appear white. Harvey Wiley at first was very pessimistic about this potted meat. Upon
analyzing the product, he found that the meat was indeed wholesome and free of dyes or adulterants
(Young 1908). In 1906, the Pure Food and

Argumerical Analysis Of AARP By Morgan Freeman
Purpose This essay will be examining the AARP magazine subscription (American Association of
retired peoples) in order to find who the targeted audience is through the analysis of advertisement
data. The AARP is a magazine titled with big bold red letters on the front page. The person sitting
front and center of the front page is a well known older actor named Morgan Freeman. The front cover
seemed specific in its target with an older crowd, but it s possible that the demographics drinks
alcohol. This is because Morgan Freeman has a glass with what seems to be whiskey with ice. The
next biggest text on the page reads Morgan Freeman In His Prime: A Legendary Life and Career in
Photos . Morgan Freeman is an older black male that is more so associated with the idea that this is
what is a good idea of what life should be like in a persons older years of life. ... Show more content

has a certain age and retirement requirements. For example, having to be over the age of fifty to
qualify for a subscription to the magazine. The front page has another article saying, 50 Ways to Shop
Smart and Save Big . Saving money makes me guess that these people might have money but not all
the money in the world therefore middle class. Another article titled Cruise America! Must Book Now
Excursions , this article that includes cruise trips seemed significant knowing that most of the
passengers on cruise trips were older people in retirement, or middle classed income. Its seems surely
the target audience would be older men. The demographic also would be older people with kids that
are grown up and don t live in the house. The goal of this essay is to look at advertisements and
articles to uncover some facts to help find the demographics or target audience this magazine is

Differences Between Superman And Superman, Television And...
Cloaked in red and blue, Superman soars above Metropolis. Well known to the public, he is strong,
kind, humble and in love with Lois Lane. Then he gets to work. He puts on some glasses, and he
becomes Clark Kent, a mild mannered reporter. According to the public, his relationship with Louis is
platonic. Despite being the same person, depending on who you ask, they will give you a very
different description of just one man. The real difference between Superman and Clark Kent isn t a
disguise, but the social context in which he is seen. Much the same as Superman, people can have
multiple identities, or frames of themselves, each coming out in a specific social context. With social
media, these different identities can be created and thrive. On public platforms, the ideal side of a
person is shown, along with their close relationships, but on private sites, they don t have to worry
about dealing with the pressure from others. To put simply, whether you see Superman or Clark Kent,
depends on who is watching him, so it can be argued that the amount of privacy a user has on a social
media platform, greatly impacts how they display themselves, and their relationships on said platform
as well.
Overall, some of the most popular social media platforms are public ones, such as Facebook and
Instagram. Although these sites have different features, one similarity between them is how they can
be used to enforce gender norms . Public sites often involve the user posting photos and

John Mcdonald s Influence On Canadian History
I view the old cover as telling me that Canadian history is made up of many different people and
events. Many different individuals who helped shape Canada today bare the cover, as well as different
objects that represent different events.
Near the top of the textbook, right near the title, there is a British flag. Britain had a gargantuan impact
on Canadian history, as Canada was a British colony and Britain continues to influence Canada today.
For example, in Canada we often use British spelling instead of American spelling, like the words
colour, instead of color, and grey, instead of gray.
To the right of the title is a picture of John A. Macdonald, who was essential to Canadian history. He
was the first prime minister of Canada, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These women represent the part women took in Canadian history. Women did not get the right to vote
in federal elections in Canada until 1918, and the first female to practice medicine did not get licensed
in Canada until 1875. The first female judge in Canada was appointed in 1916, and she faced many
challenges, such as male lawyers stating that, because she was a woman, she was therefore not a
person under the law. It was not until 1929 that women were considered persons .
Underneath the two women are RCMP officers. RCMP stands for Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
When people from foreign countries think of Canada, many think of the RCMP. The RCMP was
founded in 1920, and continues to be a symbol of Canada today.
The last picture on the front cover is of a female nurse. She represents the nurses of World War I.
World War began in 1914, and ended in 1918. A total of 3141 Canadian volunteered in this war, and
out of the 2,504 nurses overseas, 53 were killed either by drowning, disease, or enemy fire, while
others were killed in the line of duty by bombings in Europe at Canadian hospitals.

gramophone. A gramophone is a music player that plays records. In Canada, the gramophone s leading

Chopsticks To Eat In My Culture

Vietnamese chopsticks were often made from wood or bamboo because they were typical of the
Vietnamese village culture such as the pictures of bamboo. We use chopsticks to enjoy food, including
rice, noodle or savory pastry.
As far as I knew, Europeans used knives, forks in their meal. That was the way of eating imitated

I said that the reason Ahem could not eat pork because it was a forbidden thing in his religion.
Moreover, he ate by his hand because it was cultural specificity in India. We always love our culture.

people had different manner. Eating by hand was the way of eating that was instinctive so that anyone
or any nation could apply when they needed.
Therefore, The mother understood and sympathized with Ahem in our scenario . Now I think we love
our culture that is deeply engraved in our mind. When we visited a new country, we would learn about
its culture to adjust. If I visit India, maybe I will be feel like a fish out of water and need to get used to
new foods or environments.
Every country had a different culture and own beauty. It could be obviously known as the differences
of lifestyle, language or celebration. The differences between cultures could make it very difficult to

  • 2. Similarities Between Populists And Progressives Of Populists and Progressives Many critics of history have long argued that Populists were far less successful than Progressives in reaching their objectives, which is supported by the difference in beliefs of the two groups and the results of their distinct reform attempts. Despite not being as effective as the Progressives, the Populists did succeed in getting several of their ideas acknowledged by the government. Unfortunately for the political group, a majority of the Populist demands remained unrecognized or barely enforced. On the other hand, the Progressive movement resulted in several societal and government reforms, as well as a new interest in the wellbeing of the general population. While the Populists were able to inspire some more government involvement in the economy with their currency concerns, the Progressives both reformed the government into a less corruptible system and called for more government participation in reducing the growing power of certain industries. Finally, as the Populists failed to convince the nation to address most of their most basic beliefs and goals, the Progressives succeeded in obtaining government recognition of their side of a long standing racial dissension. • 3. Water Purification Process Reason for the process There are many problems in the world that people face today. One of the biggest concerns is the lack of clean and drinkable water for human use. Over 70% of the earth is covered with water, so the need for drinkable, usable and clean water is inevitable. Purified water is also used for medicinal purposes as well industrial. Clean water is used in making medicine and also used in food products. Water can contain thousands of contaminants like waste discharges from industrial or municipal use and runoff from agriculture use. Many chemical industries around the world focus on the process of water purification. With the help of this process we are able to get clean water for medical, pharmacological and even third world countries. History of the process. There is not only one specific process of purifying water. The method of purifying water is based on what the water is being used for. The oldest methods of water purification date back to about 2000 BC. At that time they had some idea of water purification that involved heat. Boiling water is one of the simplest methods of making water drinkable. As time went on people began to experiment with sand filtering. Once the microscope was invented it allowed us to see small material particles in the water that ultimately furthered the process of water purification. In the 1700s the first domestic water filters were created, sort of like what we use today but they were made of wool, charcoal and sponge. A man ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Innovations In The Byzantine Empire The Byzantine Empire strengthened through legal innovations such as the creation of the Code of Justinian. The code was a collection up many edicts and rulings regarding law by previous emperors, which unified and organized the empire. Prior to the code, the Byzantine Empire s laws were multitudinous and very confusing. Furthermore, military innovations saved the capital from the Arabs who laid a major siege. A napalm like weapon called Greek fire was used to destroy Arab ships at the coasts. This new weapon contained chemicals that ignited as it touched water. It helped drive back the Arab naval forces. Also, the empire expanded religious innovations through the building of new churches such as the Hagia Sophia. It was an achievement for Christianity and engineering. No other building in the world at the time could support a dome so large. However, it later became a mosque when the Ottoman Turks conquered the Byzantine Empire. Caesaropapism became evident in Byzantine Empire as it incorporated the state and the church in society. However, the state was superior than the church. Challenges to the UK Health Care System Essay Introduction In line with the majority of other developed countries, the United Kingdom (UK) has offered its citizens a universal health care system that is free at the point of service. Funded primarily by taxation, the system is popular and efficient. However, along with most other health care systems around the world, it faces a series of challenges if it is to maintain viability, in the twenty first century. These issues include; long waiting times, an aging population, funding challenges and the increasing cost of technology. The performance of the NHS is also monitored by the Health Care Commission, an independent executive agency that performs annual reviews and ratings, and investigates complaints. According to Johnson and Stoskopf (2008) there are a number of dimensions for measuring health care systems. The three most frequent include: population health measures, system efficiency measures, and patient perceptions (p.74). Other clinical measurements commonly used include infant mortality rates and life expectancy. The UK has an infant mortality rate of 4.93 deaths per 1,000 live births, and an average life expectancy of 78.85 years. Funding for the NHS is a combination of private and public sources. All legal UK residents have access to the NHS and pay a payroll tax, which equates approximately to 10% of earnings. Although health care provided by the NHS is largely free, there are fees for certain services such as prescriptions, dental and optician services, which are paid by all citizens who are working and make more than minimum wage. Recent Reforms In 2000, an effort was made by the UK government to resolve certain inequalities that had developed within the NHS by releasing the NHS Plan of 2000. • 7. Mystery Of Iniquity Poem Analysis Ramani Goode Professor Dubose Eng 102 02 07 November 2017 Mystery of Iniquity The first line in the poem is a phrase that is found in Bible: 2 Thessalonians 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. Which means the lawlessness, discrimination, and immoral is already working. Lauryn Hill is rightly regarded as one of the most exciting and original talents of her generation. As singer, songwriter and rapper, she first came to prominence as a member of the hip hop trio the Fugees, before launching a short lived but impactful solo career. She is also regarded as one of music s lost geniuses, avoiding the limelight and the studio to raise her five children with Rohan Marley, son of reggae legend Bob. Right now, with a life that has involved no shows at concerts and a prison sentence, it doesn t look like she ll be adding to her five Grammy awards (The Biography.com website, 2017). The poem speaks about how messed up and crooked the court system are towards African Americans. Inequity is lack of fairness or justice. The history of inequity is something people is running after but will never be able to catch. Lauryn Hill describes it as The American Dream and how it is creating an illusion around the U.S. The illusion is making people obsessed with success and allowing the government control them. This paper will focus on the injustice of African Americans. Lauryn Hill have great songs that inspire many music artists. In the Mystery of Iniquity Lauryn Hill talks about the history of inequity which is exclusionary, discrimination, and immoral behavior. Mystery of Iniquity is one of the powerful poems ever written by Lauryn Hill because she speaks on exclusionary. Exclusionary is relating to or characterized by the exclusion of something, especially from a contract or group. When Lauryn Hill talks about the expert witness (the paid authority) the expert witness gets on the stand and tells the jury what they want to hear. The jury doesn t even bother to question some of the shaky points. They just want to go home and mostly likely didn t want to be there in the first place (Genius, 2017). It is our duty as Christians to know what we believe and where we stand so we can back up our beliefs and try to interact with this world as morally correct as possible. As Christians, I believe it is our duty to try to avoid war, but when it become necessary we must take action. Even though we might not desire to be out on the front lines with the people who are actually doing the killing and combat, we must support our country. We can take roles in the army as non combatance if it is necessary for us to actually go out to war, but whatever we do it is our duty to our country to show support and be involved so we can make sure that the war is just for what is necessary and not taken out of hand. Natural Theology is when both philosophy and theology work together as one to provide more logical proof and understanding through nature that God actually does exist, as opposed to leaning on an individual faith, revelation, experience or religion. Natural theology is the reasonable idea so to speak that God exists and has always existed. This is examined through our natural understanding and observation of nature, how things happen in the world and even through our own existence as human beings. The main differences within Philosophy and Theology is that Philosophy for example is the study and the knowledge of how the world works and of whom we, as humans are through reality and the world we live in meanwhile, Theology is the study of God and religion which happens to be completely different with how philosophy views God and religion. • 19. The Macondo Blowout in The Gulf of Mexico Introduction The Gulf of Mexico (GoM) harbors a rich biota with ecological and high commercial significance (Yanez Arancibia and Day 2004). In this ecosystem, the microorganisms are the primary consumers and play major role in the biogeochemical cycling of organic matters (Pomeroy 1974). The GoM ecosystem is often perturbed by natural calamities or human activities affecting the microbial community structure (Kryachko et al. 2012) and the associated nutrient cycling at all trophic levels (Pomeroy 1974; Camilli et al. 2010; Atlas and Hazen 2011). On April 20, 2010 the Macondo Blowout, the largest accidental oil spill in the GoM and the second largest in the world, released an estimated 4.9 million barrels of crude oil (Atlas and Hazen 2011). This significant ecological perturbation of the sea and coastal region has led to negative impacts in local fishing, aquaculture and tourism (National Health Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (US) Gulf Ecology Division 1999; Yanez Arancibia and Day 2004; Arreguin Sanchez et al. 2004; Ritchie and Keller 2008). In total, 3,000 people died, the majority citizens and not all from the United States, but at least 90 countries. Responding to this act was a global War on Terrorism, which resulted in an invasion of Afghanistan, the U.S. Patriot Act, and several civil and social changes in American society. More than anything else, though, U.S. security policy came under intense scrutiny and a new Cabinet Level Department was formed, Homeland Security. Congress also reacted by authorizing the use of military force against any individual, group, or State that participated or had any relation to the 9/11 attacks. The changes made to the American security system because of 9/11 were vast, and affected citizens at home and abroad, with certain groups fearful that civil liberties were now less important than security. It provides a new platform for goods and services to exchange among the world (Morozov, 2010). There is no doubt that the Internet becomes one part of our daily life, especially for those developed countries. People cannot live without it because of its wide usage. Colonialism, By Lois Tyson Essay Colonialism, the hunger to expand and conquer causes the world, becomes an endless arena for the fight for dominance and inevitable discrimination that follows. Even once colonization ends, the natives are not immediately free because of the aftermath that remains in the dust colonization leaves behind. One inevitable result of colonization is the establishment of social hierarchy that continues into postcolonial society. In Using Colonialism/ Postcolonialism Critical Theory, Lois Tyson eloquently explains the consequences of colonialism and the different facets of Postcolonialism. First, in a colonial social hierarchy, unquestionably, the members of the colonizing culture occupy the top rungs of the ladder (Tyson 248 9). Meanwhile, those who occupy the bottom rungs of the colonialist social ladder whether their inferior status is based on race... or any other cultural factor are called subalterns, who are then othered by the colonized, who believe their dominance and authority is validation for their discrimination (Tyson 249). Through othering, the savage is... therefore, not considered fully human (Tyson 248). This mindset does not belong purely to the colonists, but applies to the colonized as well. To elaborate, Tyson uses the term colonized consciousness to describe subalterns who internalize... the colonialist belief that those different from a society s dominant culture are inferior (Tyson 249). • 28. Should Premarital Agreements Be Treated the Same as... Should Premarital Agreements be Treated the Same as Contracts? Contract law is relatively consistent regarding whether a contract was actually made and whether the parties involved can be legally held to the contract or not. This is primarily due to the fact that contract law proceeds from law handed down from centuries of civil and common law cases. Basically, two parties have to agree to the terms of the cited contract, after the offer is made and accepted (both parties have had time to review and make changes to the contract, although this process does not always occur), and they have either orally agreed or signed some form of written contract. It can be argued in a court afterword that there was not sufficient consideration or that one party coerced the other into an agreement, but these are usually handled at the signing of the contract. This process is time honored and, as said, has been in place for a long time. But, new types of contracts occur at times and they have a different sort of accounting by the courts. One of these types of contracts is that generally called prenuptial, antenuptial or premarital (Standler, 2009). This paper looks at prenuptial agreements and using the case of Simeone v. Simeone tries to determine some of the pros and cons of treating these agreements more like regular contracts. Simeone v. It may have some advantages and disadvantages as most new technologies do, and some of these advantages and disadvantages can be seen on online assignment submission, online social networking and online news sites. The same group of students was required to compare their online submission perception with another assignment submission, which was a paper based assignment. Brave New World, written in Great Britain between World Wars when people were prospering, technology was advancing, and pop culture was thriving, is a dystopian novel in which all of these societal changes are magnified. Upon first glance at Aldous Huxley s famed novel Brave New World, it may seem as though Huxley is issuing a warning to readers about the detrimental effects science, pop culture, and consumerism can have on a society. Upon closer evaluation of Huxley s other writings as well as Huxley s biography, it becomes clear that perhaps Huxley was not warning society, but rather providing a blueprint for a utopian society that he hoped to see develop in the future. Aldous Huxley, as is revealed by analysis of his later works, wrote Brave New World as a blueprint for society which lays out how to create a perfect utopia, an idea which contradicts the popular belief that the book warns against excessive science and eugenics. Class structure is a major component in Brave New World. Everybody is predestined to their social class. Pierre Bourdieu A concurrently developed theory of social capital came from French Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1985). Bourdieu s (1985) use of the term social capital is an explicit attempt to understand the production of classes and class divisions. Social capital and relationships are never disconnected from capital. Capital for Bourdieu (1985), is simultaneously economic as well as a set of power relations that constitute a variety of realms and social interactions though normally non economic. He was interested to find the ways to reproduce society and to understand how the supreme position of dominant classes are retained. He could not explain this by economics alone, and he is well known for his discussion of cultural capital. Also he tried to learn how people utilized cultural knowledge to place them in the hierarchy. Examples Of Cognitive Dissonance Cognitive dissonance An Example of cognitive dissonance is that at my house, my cats can sometimes be tough to see when you are walking, and thus people end up stepping on them or kicking them. The cognitive dissonance here would be that people often like to say your cat walked into my path or your cat tried to trip me. When this happens people are having two conflicting views at the same exact time, theory often suggests that the brain wants to eliminate dissonance whenever possible. The brain does this by changing the way you feel about or perceive certain things, or in other words, changing your attitudes and beliefs. So instead of just admitting they made a mistake in kicking the cat and feeling apologetic, people use cognitive dissonance to turn the situation into the cat s fault for getting in their way, thus making them feel better about themselves. • 46. The Jungle Essay example The book, The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair had a major impact on the way the world saw the American Meat Packing Industry. While Upton Sinclair originally intended to appeal to the public s heart concerning the conditions and the treatment of workers, it was obvious that the book had more of an impact on the meat industry. The public was outraged by the stories of waste meat being canned as wholesome meat, workers falling into vats and being processed as lard, and dead animals being processed when the inspectors weren t looking. Upton was quoted in saying, I aimed at the public s heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach (Kantor 1976). The impact that this fictitious novel had, can still be seen today. After the outrage of hearing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On numerous occasions, the packing companies were tried for selling bad products, but the packing companies always came out on top (Yeager 1906). Many people felt that the trials were unfair and that the Beef Trust had its hands in the politics that lead to the false innocence of the packing industries (Yeager 1906). In 1902, Dr. Harvey Wiley created the Division of chemistry, also known as the Poison Squad. This Division of Chemistry analyzed products that were created by the packing companies. They looked for any kind of dyes, preservatives, or adulterants that may have been added to the meats. The Division of Chemistry found, in the numerous products sampled, that the meat was wholesome and contained no adulterants, dyes, or any preservatives other than the types and amounts that were allowed. They also inspected meat packing plants to find that the sanitation was acceptable in almost all cases (Young 1908). The book gave examples of potted ham, which was said to be the waste of beef or pork. The pieces of meat were too small for any other product so they were gathered together and made into its own product. Some of the parts included tripe, which were supposedly dyed so that they would not appear white. Harvey Wiley at first was very pessimistic about this potted meat. Upon analyzing the product, he found that the meat was indeed wholesome and free of dyes or adulterants (Young 1908). In 1906, the Pure Food and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 48. Differences Between Superman And Superman, Television And... Cloaked in red and blue, Superman soars above Metropolis. Well known to the public, he is strong, kind, humble and in love with Lois Lane. Then he gets to work. He puts on some glasses, and he becomes Clark Kent, a mild mannered reporter. According to the public, his relationship with Louis is platonic. Despite being the same person, depending on who you ask, they will give you a very different description of just one man. The real difference between Superman and Clark Kent isn t a disguise, but the social context in which he is seen. Much the same as Superman, people can have multiple identities, or frames of themselves, each coming out in a specific social context. With social media, these different identities can be created and thrive. On public platforms, the ideal side of a person is shown, along with their close relationships, but on private sites, they don t have to worry about dealing with the pressure from others. To put simply, whether you see Superman or Clark Kent, depends on who is watching him, so it can be argued that the amount of privacy a user has on a social media platform, greatly impacts how they display themselves, and their relationships on said platform as well. Overall, some of the most popular social media platforms are public ones, such as Facebook and Instagram. Although these sites have different features, one similarity between them is how they can be used to enforce gender norms . Public sites often involve the user posting photos and ... • 49. John Mcdonald s Influence On Canadian History I view the old cover as telling me that Canadian history is made up of many different people and events. Many different individuals who helped shape Canada today bare the cover, as well as different objects that represent different events. Near the top of the textbook, right near the title, there is a British flag. Britain had a gargantuan impact on Canadian history, as Canada was a British colony and Britain continues to influence Canada today. For example, in Canada we often use British spelling instead of American spelling, like the words colour, instead of color, and grey, instead of gray. To the right of the title is a picture of John A. Macdonald, who was essential to Canadian history. He was the first prime minister of Canada, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When people from foreign countries think of Canada, many think of the RCMP. The RCMP was founded in 1920, and continues to be a symbol of Canada today.
