SARTs are search and rescue radar transponders required on ships over 500 gross registered tons. At least two SARTs are needed on larger ships, while one is sufficient for ships between 300-500 GRT. SARTs operate on 9GHz, have a standby time of 96 hours and transmit for 8 hours when triggered by an X-band radar within 8 nautical miles, potentially displaying up to 24 dots on the radar screen when within 1 nautical mile. Accuracy is around 0.62 nautical miles at longer ranges and 150 meters within 1 nautical mile.
