The Supreme Court is the highest authority in the judiciary of India. It has a Chief Justice and 25 other judges appointed by the President of India for terms up to age 65. The Supreme Court has original, appellate, and advisory jurisdiction. It can directly take up disputes between states or between the center and states, hear appeals on high court judgments, and provide legal opinions if asked by the President. The judiciary functions independently from the other branches of government with the Supreme Court at the apex and high courts and lower courts below.
