The Social Science as an area of school curriculum demands a lot of
reading on the part of both the teachers and the pupils. There is the utmost
necessity for the provision of book as well as non – book resources for the
proper teaching and learning of Social Science.
Reading is one way and a good approach to learn Social Science. There

The Social Science teacher needs to have numerous library books
available for pupils to select from and read. Empowerment of pupils is
important so that they feel more confident in learning and in achievement. The
library books need to be on different reading levels. So each pupil may choose a
challenging book to read. The library books for pupils to read should be on
different topics, but relate directly to the Social Science unit presently being
taught. It is best to use a variety of reading materials so that pupil may check
one source against the other, critically and creatively.
5. Library may be defined “as a public institute or establishment charged
with the care of collection of books, the duty of making them accessible to
those who require the use of them and the task of converting every person in its
neighbourhood into a habitual library goer and reader of books”.

IMPORTANT LIBRARY RESOURCES FOR SOCIAL SCIENCE
1. Book Resources: Books are essential for presenting different points of view,
for providing adequate background for understanding the people, the places of
the processes being discussed in Social Science instruction. In book resources
we can include:
7. Text books: The library should have a variety of most up -to- date text
books on different sections of Social Science.
Unit booklets: The booklets on a variety of topics ranging from family
life and neighbourhood to people of other lands & places should be
7
available in the library.
General book materials: Inspirational & imaginative literature;
particularly tales of adventure should appear prominently alongside
books of information on children’s hobbies- which may be anything from
boats and balloons to kites or from doll houses to dress designs. Easy
biographies, historical series, animal stories etc are favourites with
children. Travel stories are really magic carpets to those who cannot
leave their homes.
Reference materials: The library should be fairly well – equipped with
reference materials – standard or conventional reference books.
Conventional reference books include dictionaries, encyclopaedias,
yearbooks, atlases, maps, charts, pamphlets, hand books, manuals, and
syllabi of different classes and books of knowledge. There should be
some picture collections which should include well – known master
pieces and everything to which teachers and children are attracted.
The Non – conventional reference materials consist of all other
library books that may be employed for reference service of any other
kind. They include books on special subjects- History, Economics,
8. Civics, Sociology, and Anthropology, Government and Political Science
8
etc.
2. Non – book Resources: The field of Social Science is concerned with
happenings in the local community, the state, the nation and the world.
Naturally, it becomes essential that books are supplemented by periodicals,
pamphlets, newspapers, and other such materials which may help the teaching
of Social Science. The following non – book resources should be available in
the Social Science Library:
Periodicals
Some good periodicals and magazines which throw light on
current events and various aspects of Indian life showing art, Literature,
music, dance etc., should be available in the library.
Pamphlets
Pamphlets published by various government agencies and bureaus
for specialized service are also very importance sources of information
about different walks of our social, economic, and political life. They are
generally low – priced. Every school library should subscribe for these.
News papers
It is essential that the Social Science teacher and pupils keep well
informed of events of national and international importance. A
newspaper is a wonderful source of such information. Some local news
9. papers and one or two other daily newspapers of All –India circulation
9
need to be provided.
Internet
In this technological age, internet facility is not a luxury; it is an
essential medium even in a secondary school library. It opens unlimited
access to the treasure house of knowledge and information. The use of
internet needs no sophisticated expertise; a minimum skill for the use of
computer is enough. Students can acquire this skill and search for any
additional or supplementary information within a matter of minutes.
UTILIZATION OF LIBRARY RESOURSES
It is necessary that pupils are taught the techniques of locating relevant
references and resource material quickly. Assignments should be given in the
form of problems. This would compel the pupils to investigate and examine
multiple sources. In the course of the search, pupils will not only assimilate
some of the essential facts concerning the learning unit, but more important
than that, they will be using these facts in a creative and productive way to
arrive at their own independent conclusions, and thereby, will invariably grow
in enriched knowledge, abilities, skills, and interests.
CONCLUSION
The library today is considered to be the intellectual laboratory of the
school. It is being rightly felt today that textbooks are no longer “educational
10. bibles” to be used alone. They need to be supported, supplemented and
reinforced by other sources of information. A library is the treasure vault of
ideas, the store- house of knowledge and the flowing stream of living thought.
If Social Science is to be a living and vital discipline, the library must be
accepted as an integral part of the entire Social Science Programme.
