This document discusses different generations of membrane technologies for treating produced water and evaporator blowdown water. The 3rd generation technology discussed is Replaceable Skin Layer (RSL) Membranes, which have a patent protected powder slurry that creates a 50 micron thick replaceable skin layer on membrane tubes. RSL Membranes have been successfully commercialized for produced water treatment in Canada and China. They provide higher capacity, lower energy use, and the ability to simultaneously separate solids and oil compared to other technologies like dynamic membranes, conventional membranes, and dissolved air flotation.
