2. Tight Junction Lab Report
Tight Junction Function Response to Unknown Bacterium in Intestinal Epithelium
Introduction
Tight junctions function as barriers in epithelial cells through the formation of protein complexes
between neighboring cells. Made up of three transmembrane protein families including the occludin
proteins, the claudin proteins, and the junctional adhesion molecules (JAMs), tight junctions are able
to maintain the distinction between the apical and basolateral regions of the cell as well as maintain
the endothelial and epithelial cell sheet barrier. Tight junctions are found to work based on properties
such as size selectivity, ion permeability, concentration gradients, sensitivity to pH, and other transport
mechanisms (Tang and Goodenough, 2003). This becomes important when recognizing that tight
junctions work to prevent molecules from permeating the epithelial sheet and transport them through a
paracellular pathway. Permeation of pathogenic bacteria may cause disruption of tight junctions which
plainly leads to malfunction of the epithelium which serves to absorb food and water and protect the
body against foreign antigens. Since the discovery that disruption could occur due to reception of
certain bacteria such as enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) and enteropathogenic E. coli, much
research has been done on the bacterial disruption and effects on tight junctions due to the perceived
relationship that some pathogens cause symptoms such as diarrhea that are due to various ... Show

Realistically, the average american doesn t get enough sleep. Now most people would say they just
need to manage their time better but sometimes that isn t possible. You re less productive when your
tired so if you didn t get enough sleep you aren t productive and that s when a nap could be beneficial
for your mental health to get rest and refocus. Napping is healthy for everyone because they help
make up for lost sleep, stay focused, regain energy, and ensure you get enough sleep for your age
Napping is healthy to a point. Naps are beneficial to make up for some lost sleep at night but they
wont help the effects of consistent irregular sleeping patters. Although naps are good when you need a
break or to tired to continue, there is such thing as over sleeping. Over sleeping will cause a person to

situations because when you are exhausted and stressed the next day, the quality of your work is going
to be very poor. Naps provide a short term boost of energy and productivity, and while this is good for
your health many will argue that naps are only for children. This stigma that naps are only for young

4. A Multicultural Education
The statics in the Kim article were staggering. Being in education for 17 years I have personally seen
the change in the student demographics. However Kim summarizes the truth that the demography of
the educators has not changed. The introduction focuses on the state of crisis in education involving
the achievement gap. This study is focused not just on ethnicity, but also socioeconomic status. From
this study the cause to look at multicultural education is very evident. The main area of the paper will
explore the varied approaches to dealing with multiculturalism and the critiques of all the
misconceptions and the impact of whiteness.
Kim relays the four phases of multicultural education: incorporating ethnic studies into school
curricula, total school reform for educational equality, inclusion of other minority groups by
incorporating their history and culture into the curriculum, and analyzing the differences of race, class
and gender. In order to move forward with the implementation of multicultural education, educators
most be made more aware of integrating content, building a diverse knowledge base which is
delivered equitably in the classroom, and making the culture part of the every day educational routine.
According to Kim, in order to feel successful with the implementation, there are several approaches
which schools can take. The contribution approach is simply identifying with the icons and holidays
of the culture. The additive approach is embedding

5. Student Athletes Should Be Paid For Their Services
College sports is a form of entertainment for students, former alumni and the rabid sports fanatic. The
NCAA gives sports fans the opportunity to see up and coming talent blossom and mature well before
the player is eligible to join a pro league. While the NCAA benefits monetarily off this talent, the
players themselves receive nothing of value accept for a scholarship to the university. Recently student
athlete have organized and decided to fight for the rights to establish players unions similar to the pro
league. Players have been meet with a backlash against the movement because of the lack of
understanding. Although college athletics are considered amateur sports, student athletes should be
paid for their services. Student athletes should receive compensation in order to pay for college
expenses, to replace lost revenue from lack of endorsements and cover the impending probability of
serious injury.
In, April 2014 University of Connecticut star point guard Shabazz Napier made headlines commenting
on the hidden conditions of college sports players Sometimes, there s hungry nights where I m not

comments made by Napier to be hyperbolic, because the only view the public is shown about college
athletics are the glitz and glam of playing on national television and the many ad placements showing
happy college students that receive scholarships for their participation,

6. Significant Economic Changes In The United States
In the past 10 years, there have been numerous economic changes in the united states. Between
inflation, unemployment, the GDP and changes in government leadership, how money is spent and
saved regularly changed throughout the decade. These economic habits can be different based on age,
race, gender, location, education levels, and spending habits reflect each of these variables. Today i
will explore these variables, how things have recently changed based on then, and how i believe things
will change in the near future.
There isn t a pattern in the last 10 years for inflation changing. Inflation currently for October is 2.0, in
October of last year it was 1.6 so it raised quite a bit in the last year. But in October 2007 inflation was

in the future because that s the progress it has been in the last 10 years.
GDP now is in the US is 3.3%, GDP has lowered in the last 10 years. In 2007 the GDP in the US was

60% of women 16 years or older were in the labor force. The GDP in hawaii in 2016 was $84.7 billion
and ranked 38th in the united states. In 2006 the GDP in Hawaii was $62.1 billion and still was ranked
38th in the united states. I think that the GDP in Hawaii is going to get higher because it has gotten

7. Lack Of Alcohol Consumption On Campus
Universities and colleges in the United States are split up into different categories. Private, public,
four years, and two years are just some of the different types of colleges in the United States. To be
even more specific all colleges are broken down into two major categories: dry and wet campuses.
Dry campus are basically universities that do not allow alcohol consumption on campus even if you
are at the drinking age. Wet campuses are the exact opposite. Most wet campuses are huge schools
where they can not control the alcohol consumption, such as the University of Connecticut, Penn
State, etc. Dry campuses on the other hand are mostly smaller schools where alcohol consumption can
be monitored. Examples of this are ECSU, and all the other Connecticut state schools. The reasons for
these differences are because the universities are trying to decrease the amount of drinking on campus,
but does this actually work? is the percentage of alcohol consumption lower on dry campuses than wet
campuses? After researching these topics and experiencing this first hand it is clear that the percentage
of alcohol consumption on dry campuses is not low enough compared to the percentage in wet
campus, to be considered a good way of solving the problem of binge drinking in universities. Dry
campus restrictions don t work because they don t impede students from buying alcohol, they don t
impede them from drinking off campus, and they fail to prevent alcohol related incidents. Alcohol

8. Anonymous Sperm and Egg Donation Essay
Anonymous Sperm and Egg Donation
Anonymous sperm and egg donation is a serious topic. Some people think they should remain
anonymous and some do not. A few reasons for becoming known donors are legal rights, medical
reasons, and psychological problems. The parents and donor kids should know where the sperm or egg
came from because it might affect their futures. Medical risks are a huge deal that everyone needs to
be aware of, but especially those who are not sure where they came from. Donor children who do not
know who their donor is or are looking for their biological parent, may grow up to have problems
psychologically. Children have the right to know their biological background.

There are worse problems than not knowing whom their donor parent is, though. Lots of donor
children grow up not knowing that they have a greater chance of having a medical problem. To
donate, a person does not have to take any certain tests. They just have to show up and if their sperm
or eggs look fine the hospital staff take it. Regardless of socioeconomic status, donor offspring are
twice as likely as those raised by biological parents to report problems with the law before age 25.
They are more than twice as likely to report having struggled with substance abuse. And they are
about 1.5 times as likely to report depression or other mental health problems, said Karen Clark, an
investigator. Not only are donor children more likely to get into problems with the law, they are more
likely to get into problems dealing with their health. That is why donor children and their parents, the
ones who raised them, should be allowed to know who the donor parent is.
Children have a right to know who gave them life because of medical reasons. Some people might
argue that genetic medical problems do not give children the right to know the donor parent because
they can just use their DNA or blood sample to know medical problems they might have. However,
what they do not realize is that it can be difficult for donor children to find that information. It is
important for them to also realize that new medical problems could have sprung up since the

9. Human And Non Human Primates
Language is used to distinguish humans from others (Zuberbühler, 2014). Human communication has
formally derived from past primate communication systems (Ghazanfar Eliades, 2014). Humans
express themselves in verbal, gestural, and written forms (Zuberbühler, 2014). Human and non human
primates have totally diverse forms of communication systems (Ghazanfar Eliades, 2014). Speech has
evolved from non human primates to its current compound state that humans utilize present day
(Zuberbühler, 2014)
Non human primates have abilities to communicate with others when in danger for recipients to
differentiate their calls (Ghazanfar Eliades, 2014). It is necessary for a primate to be able to learn and
distinguish any communication signals for natural selection (Ghazanfar Eliades, 2014). Distinct alarm
calls vary in some species due to different situations (Coye, Ouattara, Zuberbühler Lemasson, 2015).
Non human primate callings are limited because of the lack of acoustic variation available (Coye,
2015). However, recent studies have shown that there is a combination of basic acoustic parts that
have been made into more complex vocal arrangements (Coye, 2015). Some individuals are willing to
help unrelated individuals if those individuals have had positive experiences with them in the past
(Ghazanfar Eliades, 2014). Sometimes, individuals would ignore another individual s signal who
sounded unrelated (Ghazanfar Eliades, 2014).

10. The Man In The High Castle Analysis
Human Reliance on Outside Forces
We live in the world our questions create (David Cooperrider). Inquiry is the base of society, all
answers come from questions that were once asked. Questioning can influence people s decisions to
act in certain ways and determine how they live, and people s lives change the world. The Man in the
High Castle, written by Philip K Dick, follows a full cast of characters from an endangered Jewish
man named Frank Frink to a high up Japanese man named Mr. Tagomi. The book takes place in a
world after World War Two, but one very different from present time, a world where Germany and
Japan, along with the other Axis powers, won the war. The planet is overcome with racism and
distrust. Jewish people are killed every day and the ones still alive are forced into hiding and change
their names. Both men live very different lives, Frink is in hiding as a Jew while Tagomi is a wealthy
antique seller. The one thing they have in common is the I Ching, a highly regarded oracle of sorts. It
predicts the future and provides advice along with it; and everyone follows that advice no matter what
they are told. They do this partially because after the Axis powers won the war, every person was
required to have an I Ching in their home. This caused the residents to become reliant on the oracle for
their every need. The I Ching provides advice in the form of special hexagrams which have a
corresponding prophecy of sorts. In The Man in the High Castle Philip K.

12. Dead Sea Scrolls Important To The World Today
The finding of the Dead Sea Scrolls is very important to the world today because they show tangible
evidence that God s Word is real and everlasting. They have had the greatest Biblical impact on holy
and historic events throughout history. The Dead Sea Scrolls have even been called the greatest
manuscript discovery of modern times. For these reasons, the Dead Sea Scrolls are important to us
today.
The Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of different texts that were first discovered by a young boy
named Juma and his cousins, who were Bedouin goat herders, in 1947 in a cave at the Khirbet
Qumran in the West Bank near the Dead Sea, from which they derive their name. Then, in 1949
archaeologists searched and discovered more scrolls in ten other caves in the area. The texts are of
great historical and religious value. They include the third oldest known surviving texts of works
included in the Bible and they date back 1,000 years from the oldest known texts at that time and are
when Jesus lived. They also contain previously unknown stories about biblical figures. The texts are
written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. Probably the Dead Sea Scrolls have had the greatest Biblical
impact. They have provided Old Testament manuscripts. The Dead Sea Scrolls have demonstrated that
the Old Testament was accurately transmitted during this interval. In addition, they provide a wealth
of information on the times leading up to, and during, the life of Christ (Wood). Therefore, the Dead

Smallpox is a viral disease that causes pus filled boils on the dermis. It looks similar to chickenpox,

Disease transmission
Smallpox is transmitted via face to face contact and /or exchange of infected bodily fluids with the
affected individual. The disease is transmitted to a lesser extent via infected clothing and bedding.
Humans are the only natural host for the virus. Therefore, there is no reservoir and the virus is not
transmittable through animals or insects. The incubation period of the virus is nearly 2 weeks (7 to 17
days) during which the person is asymptomatic and non contagious (Fenner et al., 129).
Symptoms and diagnosis
After the incubation period, the person experiences symptoms such as fever (101 to 104°F), body
ache, headache, malaise, vomiting and stomachache. At this point, the person becomes too sick to
walk around and do their daily chores. This phase is called as prodrome that may last 2 to 4 days. The
patient starts to feel normal after this prodrome phase only to experience the appearance of rashes in
the form of red spots on the mucous lining of the mouth and on the tongue, 24 hours later. These spots
rupture and release the virus into the throat. It is during this time that the rash starts appearing on the
dermis of the face, arms and legs. Usually, the midsection of the body has less concentration of these

15. Judith With The Head Of Holofernes
As artistic movements sweep certain time periods, location is an important factor in the development
of an artist s vision. While Europe is a compact continent, it s artistic productions can be largely
influenced by the country of origin. This can be seen in multiple artistic movements such as the
Renaissance where works from Italy and England while largely influenced by the same artistic goals
produce works with stylistic differences. Baroque style art was also subject to these geographical
differences influencing the vision of the artist. Understanding the complex layers of an artistic
movement requires one to analysis works of art and how they compare to other pieces produced
during the same time. By taking two works with the same subject matter, one can effectively dissect
the influences that time and place have had on the artist s execution. In 1530 Germany, Lucas Cranach
the Elder produced a painting titled Judith with the Head of Holofernes depicting the biblical heroine
Judith with the severed head of Holofernes. A little more than a hundred years later in 1640 Italy,
Massimo Stanzione created a similar representation of this story in his work, Judith with the Head of
Holofernes. Both artist took the same biblical story but produced two individual works invoking
different effects one through Baroque style and the other a Renaissance interpuation.

Were these individuals villains or heroes, bandits or patriots, terrorists challenging the authority of the

SOCIAL BANDITRY One of the earliest forms of resistance against the American occupation of the
Greater Southwest was social banditry. As individuals realized through personal experiences that the
promises in the treaty were not being upheld they resisted through banditry. Acuna describes social
bandits as individuals who rebel against an injustice and through that rebellion gain the popular
support of their race. They are not necessarily social revolutionaries with goals of transforming
society. These individuals have just had enough (71). Citing the work of British social historian Eric
Hobsbawn, Gilberto Lopez y Rivas explains that social banditry is one of the most primitive forms of
organized social protest and [that it is] a phenomenon almost universally [identified] with rural
conditions where the oppressed has neither developed a political awareness nor acquired more

Market structure of oligopoly
Oligopoly is a market structure where there are a few firms producing all or most of the market supply
of a particular good or service and whose decisions about the industry s output can affect competitors.
Examples of oligopolistic structures are supermarket, banking industry and pharmaceutical industry.
The characteristics of the oligopoly are:
• Small number of large firms dominate the industry
• High degree of interdependence: the behaviour of firms are affected by what they believe other
rivalry firms might do
• High barriers to entry that restrict new firms to enter the industry e.g. ... Show more content on

Cartel is seen by the government as a means of driving up prices and profits which is against the
public interest. As a result it is illegal to operate the cartel in many countries.
Tacit collusion
Tacit Collusion is collusion that is not organized through a formal, open contract between colluding
parties. Tacit collusion is when firms abide to the price that has been set by a recognized leader. The
leader is usually the largest firm i.e. the firm that controls the industry known as dominant firm price

hundreds of Jews were captured or killed. The Jews had to run away a lot. Everyday, despite the sun
may be out it was darkness for them. They couldn t get out of the darkness! Then when Hitler gets
stopped, a ray of hope is emerged. The Jews were finally able to live their lives and finally have the
darkness go away. Hitler had surrounded their lives with darkness because he was trying to eliminate
all Jews. Hitler died and the Jews had nothing to be scared of except for God.
Figurative language:
There wasn t maybe figurative languages besides smilies but I did find some. An example of a simile
in the book is: The barbed wire that encircled us like a wall did not fit us with real fear. (Page 11). The
simile refers to that the Jews were basically in a camp in which they were surrounded by a barbed
wire. This simile is a big factor because it shows that the people are trapped with wires around them
giving them no chance to escape. Another example is figurative language was personification. I
believe it is important to emphasize how strongly I feel that books, just like people, have a destiny.
(Page 17). This is an example of personification because the author is relating a non living object to
something that a living object has. We, people, have a destiny and no

22. Advantages And Contributions Of The Romans
The Italian civilization had many cities and great empires that contributed a lot to their success as a
civilization, having many great achievements that are still used today. The most obvious achievement
is the vast Roman Empire, which spread over three continents, acquiring knowledge from everywhere
they ended up establishing new communities. Besides their great army, they made incredible things
like their famous aqueducts and dams, which are one of the best contributions they made during the
ancient world. The Romans are famous for their engineering accomplishments, but some of them are

24. Hurricane Mitch Effects
Introduction Natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, seaquakes, and volcanic eruptions are
all events that frequent the country of Nicaragua and its neighbors in Central America and the
Caribbean. But one of the most devastating natural disasters to affect the country, Hurricane Mitch,
has had a lasting effect on Nicaragua. There was an approximate of 3,000 deaths, 1,000 missing
persons, 900,000 injured persons. The hurricane caused damage to 50,000 homes, 340 schools, 90
health care centers, 40 health posts and 6 hospitals across the country (Christopolos, et al, 2010). This
paper will examine the conditions of Nicaragua before and after Hurricane Mitch and answer the
question, what man made factors played a role in the severe devastation of the country? First, the
paper will discuss the major hazardous natural events that occurred in the wake of Hurricane Mitch
and their effect on the country. Then the effect of human influence in geography, politics and social
structure will be analyzed. Finally, the paper dissect the socio economic effect Hurricane Mitch had on
the country of Nicaragua.
Hazardous Natural Event Though Hurricane Mitch never made direct landfall, the 50 inches of rain it
brought, led to lasting damage for the country of Nicaragua. Damage to infrastructure, roads, and
buildings pushed the country 30 50 years back in development according to Menendez Duerte,

25. Motivation Observation
How is a community formed? I have attended many churches and it can be difficult at times to be
included as the rest of the congregation already has latent knowledge about each other which puts you
on the outside. It can be difficult traversing the multitude of societal rules in order to become part of
the community. Although the early church was encouraged to continue to meet together as, Let us not
give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another and all
the more as you see the Day approaching (New International Version 2011, Hebrews 10:25). However,
it can be difficult to make those personal and deeper connections in order for members of the church
to encourage one another. Over a period of seven weeks spanning the months of August to October, I
undertook an ethnographic study of the evening meal called dinner which took place before the
Eventide service at St. Elphaba s of the Vale. My ethnographic research was completed using the
participant observation method during a Sunday evening from 6 6.30pm. By using this specific
methodology I was able to engage in all the rituals involved with participating in the meal as well as
observe the interactions of my informants around me. Each week I primarily studied one specific
aspect of the meal service ritual, therefore, I have decided to write one account which is a combination
of all of my weeks of participant observation. The primary theories which I will be using to interpret
my observations are Bronislaw Malinowski and Marcel Mauss theories of exchange, specifically
concerning the Kula ring as well as Emilie Durkheim s theory of the sacred profane dichotomy.
St Elphaba s is situated in the Hills district of Sydney, Australia where the median total income of an
individual, excluding Government pensions and allowances, for 2015 was $53,238 which is
significantly higher than the Australian average of $44,854 (The Hills Shire (A): Region Data
Summary 2017). This was reflected in the socio economic positions of the members of the
congregation. In the course of conversation with many of my informants, they volunteered their jobs
which included doctors, lawyers, builders or some who owned their own successful

26. Comparing The Etruscan Civilization Between C. 1000 And...
1. The Etruscan civilization flourished between c. 1000 and 100 B.C. also known as the Iron Age
(Villanovan) in Etruria or what is now known as modern day Tuscany, Italy. Etruria s southern area
was bordered by the Tiber River and its northern area was bordered by the Arno River in which the
areas were broken up into city states ruled by their own rulers.
2. The Apollo of Veii is a 5ft. 10 in. painted sculpture molded out of terra cotta. This sculpture was
originally a decoration on the roof of a temple built by the Etruscans. Both the Greek and Etruscan s
style of art was similar, with that being said the particular sculpture is a resemblance of the Greek
Archaic style of art. The curvilinear style along with the flat surface patterns of the folds of the drape/
clothes he was wearing, the diagonal calf muscles radiating from beneath the knee, the smile, and the
style in which the hair was made (long locks) are the same characteristics of Archaic Greek art. The
difference between the Etruscan and Greek art form lies in the clear and crisp contours, forms and
stylization, of Apollo s body along with the fact that he is depicted as striding (showing fluid flowing
movement). This is also what makes the sculpture of Apollo of Veii realistic because the sculpture not
only shows fluid motion (the position of his legs and his stretched out arms) but also the expression
that is on Apollo s face.

27. The Treatment Of Hospice And Palliative Care
According to Cynthia R., of the Journal of Palliative Medicine, Medical technology has been
progressing in leaps and bounds since the second half of the 20th century (1). This advancement is the
result of ongoing studies of medical researchers, bringing about new curative treatments for a variety
of diseases. Many of these are extending the lives and increasing comfort of those that are terminally
ill. However, amongst the improvements in medical treatments available, they have become the
default method of practice even for patients that will not ultimately overcome their condition. When
given a diagnosis, patients are often thrust into a variety of treatments by health care providers.
However, when that illness is no longer treatable to the extent that the patient will be cured, patients
are often kept in the same realm of curative treatments despite their preferences. Hospice and
palliative care is a specialized form of medical care that provides terminally ill patients (and their
families) with pain management, family planning, and a focus on spiritual and emotional well being in
the last days of a patients life, outside of a hospital environment. Hospice and palliative care does not
mean that one is necessarily needing to be at an imminent stage before death. Rather, it is the ability of
patients with terminal illnesses to receive pain management and care in order to live out the rest of
their lives comfortably. Palliative care is said to have, encouraged medicine to

30. Analysis Of Aphra Behn s Oroonoko
Aphra Behn, since the start of story Oroonoko takes on an apologetic tone in her narration of the story.
She starts of by apologizing (examples) as to the form of her writing and why she writes some parts of
the story while omitting others. It is not fully understood whether when Behn refers to being a female
pen she does so in a sarcastic way or with a deeper meaning, giving a double sense to her story. That
although she writes about a male character, she decides to write and exalt those parts of his life that
were influenced by a woman, making them as something as a very meaningful part of his story that
influenced his actions, exalting the role of a woman in this great man s life.
First of all speaking of the characterization of women in her story, we see that women are treated
merely as objects and do not have the power to make decisions for themselves, they are mostly always
under the strict rule of a man. Starting off with the character of Imoinda, we see that she only has a
considerable power because of her beauty. It is because of her beauty and her shy manner that
Oroonoko finds her so attractive, and therefore decides to marry her and have her as his only wife for
the rest of his life. After getting married, Imoinda is called by the King of Kalimenes to join his
multitude of wives. The only reason that Imoinda can proclaim to let her be slightly safe from the king

31. The Meaning Of The Word Profession
Across academia, scholars debate the meaning of the word profession. The term invokes many
connotations and expectations, but few can agree on an actual meaning.1 Geoffrey Millerson, a
prominent sociologist, defined profession as a type of higher grade, non manual occupation, with both
subjectively and objectively recognized occupational status, possessing a well defined area of study or
concern and providing a definite service, after advanced training and education. 2 According to
Millerson s definition, the United States Army is in fact a profession.
Millerson identifies the first component of a profession as higher grade, non manual occupation .
Many academics agree that a key component of a profession is specialized skill based on a body of
knowledge.3 Initially, many will contend that the U.S. Army does not pass the first requirement.
Soldiers work long and hard often completing tasks requiring physical strength and endurance. At first
glance, the composition and mission of the military undermines the definition of a profession.
Obviously, the military relies on a certain amount of physical labor to complete its mission. However,
the military is also composed of personnel who manage and direct the employment of assets to
strategically, operationally, or tactically defeat the enemy. The knowledge required to employ those
capabilities offsets the physical labor necessary to accomplish the task. The army requires officers to
be educated and to fulfill

that will help me to be a better employee to future employers as well helped me develop personally as

I chose the Skills for Professional Learning class because it taught the concepts of team learning and
team problem solving. The most important thing that I learned in this course is what is referred to as
the 4P Meeting Management Model by the authors of the book Tools for Teams. This model teaches
that a successful team meeting consists of a defined purpose, the right participants, a plan and a

I chose the Critical Thinking class because it was the first class I ever had that really defined and

through to solve problems, we can however teach ourselves to be better critical thinkers. In Keys to
Success the authors basically say that critical thinking deals with asking questions, considering

Intro Extreme deviance is behavior, beliefs, or physical traits that are serious enough to cast
violators outside of the conventional society. The Klu Klux Klan is one of the most well known
deviant white supremacy groups throughout the world. The Klan promoted their white supremacy
ideas by participating in violent acts of lynching and burning crosses. They retreated into macho KKK
attacks, scourging the homes and churches with their destruction, trying to browbeat the blacks into
submission with violent outbursts and threats. However, the K.K.K. s main goal was to weaken the
reconstruction governments and retain power for the southerners who had been in confederacy.
Norms The KKK murderers were deviant, at least according to northern white standards, but they
were the norm according to fearful southern thinking at that time. These were white men who were
hanging on a thread, afraid of true equality of the races for economic and deeply psychological and
sociological reasons. Merton s strain theory supports that disorder is sometimes an aspect of progress,
that the deviance brings attention to something that is happening within a particular context. The

37. The Importance Of Social Justice
Social Justice is a double edge sword. On one side everyone is treated equally and fairly with
sustainable life advantages. There is food, clean water, shelter, health care, education and a living
wage adequate to support and improve families quality of life. On the other side, there is the reality of
economics, war, prejudice, environment, poverty, and political influences. As long as there is
corruption and greed these goals seem impossible to achieve. Food and clean water is a basic necessity
of human life. Access to quality, adequate, affordable food and clean water should be a goal of every
government. However, in many places that is not possible either due to drought or destitution. In some
areas the government uses food to control the population. Many lives are lost due to starvation for no
reason other than lack of government management. Affordable housing should be available to
everyone. There are many opportunities to renovate buildings to accommodate housing. Programs that
give the recipient the opportunity to participate in the process, such as Habitat for Humanity, need to
be supported. This process gives people the pride of ownership. The expense and lack of funding is
the main concern. A plan has to be made to find affordable clean housing.

Symbolism is commonly used in literature to change or deepen meanings or instill a different meaning
to the mind of the readers. The reader is forced to think, make connections, and succeed in adding a

clearly showcased in the novel The Great Gatsby. The iceberg theory describes that only around 20%
of the story is directly revealed through text. In comparison to an actual iceberg, that is usually the
portion of the floating ice mountain that is visible above water. The other 80% of the story lies behind

The unfortunate events that occur in the Valley of Ashes, the affair between Tom and Myrtle which
ultimately led to Myrtle s accidental death, represent the severe consequences brought about by the
failed attempts at achieve the American Dream. Tom wanted everything all at the same time a concept
typically associated with the 1920 s, a time full of loss of inhibitions and little self control. The Valley
of Ashes also symbolizes the condition in which the poorer American society lived during the 1920s.
The description of the Valley of Ashes as a desolate strip of land (Fitzgerald 22), allows the reader to
recognize the negative personality changes, reflective of the 1920s. Fitzgerald was well known for
writing in an almost satirical manner to describe his opinions of the 1920 s.
The tragic and coincidental events that occur in the Valley of Ashes do not go unnoticed however, they

destruction of the American Dream. Fitzgerald includes the Valley Chiarelli 3 of Ashes to represent the

42. Comcast Corporation Case
It would be fair to say that the Comcast Corporation is a triple treat. The company provides cable,
internet services, and is a home telephone provider. With all that Comcast is producing film, cable,
and television. It s the largest media company in the world. In 2013, it took in $64.67 billion,
generating $13.6 billion in operating income and $7.1 billion in net profits (Cassidy, 2014) . How can
any company compete with that, this is why as an economic society we need competition. This giant is
still not satisfied with the profitable margin that it receives each year. Comcast merged with Time
Warner Cable in 2005 to purchase the competition, Adelphia Communications. In purchasing the fifth
largest cable company comes all of their subscribers making Comcast a colossal company. Now that it
has majority control over the market, Comcast is selling the idea to the public that the services they
will provide will benefit the consumer. The large cable company s know that as a consumer we have
no choice but to pay for the entertainment that they provide, which leaves the consumer with no
choice at all. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The services that the Comcast Company provides the consumer are the same quality of entertainment
around the world, just a cheaper price. This is because they have implemented a competition policy
which helps new providers to enter the market at competitive prices. When we compare the triple play
packages that we receive from Comcast to other parts of the country they are significantly different.
Looking at France s packages, they offer free telephone services around the world and their internet
services is much faster then what Comcast is providing. Why are Americans paying for the same
service, just at a much higher

43. An Age Of Political Correctness Is All The Rage And...
In an age where political correctness is all the rage and conservative values are synonyms with
discrimination it is not surprising that the principles by which our great nation was built on are the
first to be tossed aside. We see an increasing number of left
wing policies put into play with almost
unanimous support from the media. These policies are masked with intent to bring our country
together but generally end up creating even larger division. This is made ever present in the repeal of
the military s Don t Ask Don t Tell act. The repel of Don t Ask Don t Tell has more Don t Ask Don t
Tell was a law passed by President Bill Clinton in 1993. This widely supported law required gay
military personal to refrain from mentioning, discussing, or implying their sexual preferences or
orientation in any public forum or platform. The law also restricted officers in command positions
from questioning any serviceman or servicewoman of having homosexual beliefs or tenancies. Retired
veteran and senator John McCain brings up many valid points when he states his belief in the
necessity of law by saying, This successful policy has been in effect for over 15 years, and it is well
understood and predominantly supported by our military at all levels. We have the best trained, best
equipped, and most professional force in the history of our country, and the men and women in
uniform are performing heroically in two wars. At a time when our Armed Forces are fighting

45. Taking A Look At Carnival Corporation
Carnival Corporation is the largest cruise company in the industry. They have over 100 ships across
many different brands. They sell cruises to anyone around the world, as long as they have access to the
ports of departure. Carnival produces, or buys, their ships from numerous shipyards in Europe, most
often in Scandinavia and the Baltic and North Seas. These vessels provide tourists with food, shelter,
travel, and many other amenities as well, for a base price with additional add ons that are optional.
Shore excursions also provide tours for customers at the ports that also produce a large amount of
revenue. It is currently one of the fastest growing areas of tourism.
Carnival Corp. has cruise ships located around the world, with very different target consumers as well.
The more exotic the location, the higher the cost for the company, which results in a higher price for
consumers. Higher end brands appeal to the wealthier consumer and provide them with a more
luxurious experience. Meanwhile the budget ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All of these things will greatly decrease the satisfaction of the customers on board, which will result in
a major decrease in revenue. If a ship were to crash, like the Costa Concordia did in 2012, that greatly
decreases sales of rooms onboard future cruises. It s a similar result when disease spreads onboard or a
ship gets stranded at sea without power. These incidents provide little assurance to potential future
customers who are concerned for their safety. Adverse weather is unpredictable, and while it isn t the
cruise lines fault, many will be worried about the weather or get seasickness and never leave the room
to buy things on board. Whenever any of these risks actually occur, it can be very damaging to the
short term profits for Carnival Corp. because they will not be generating the revenue

46. Low Self Esteem In Approximation By Mona Simpson
In the story Approximations by Mona Simpson, Carol is the weaker parent due to the fact that she
yells at, criticizes, and tells Melinda information that Melinda does not need to know and is
materialistic. Carol is the weaker parent because she yells at, criticizes, and says things parents should
not say to Melinda. In a taxi on the way home from the airport, Carol is upset and criticizes Melinda:
There you didn t say one smart thing in front of him [John]. Let me tell you, you sounded dumb, (Page
126). This quote is just the very first criticizing statement that Carol tells Melinda. It is very
unacceptable for a parent to call her daughter dumb. It is very degrading and can lead to a low self
esteem, which Melinda does not need. Also, if Carol keeps calling Melinda names, Melinda will
eventually start calling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, in the same conversation as previously mentioned, Carol acts worse and moves on to criticizing
Melinda s looks: There you slumped. You looked down. You really just looked ordinary, (Page 126).
Carol is taking our all her anger relentlessly on Melinda. A mother should tell her daughter that she
looks ordinary:. Mothers should say that their daughters look stunning, amazing, beautiful, etc. This
can make Melinda self conscious about her body, and no young girl needs that. Before the previously
mentioned conversation, Melinda is getting ready to go out and play, but her mother reminds her of a
Girl Scout Father/Daughter Breakfast and is trying to make Melinda go with Jerry: Won t you do this
for me [Carol]? (Page 122). Carol is trying to manipulate Melinda by making Melinda feel guilty.

47. Taking a Look at Mergers and Acquisitions
Chapter 2: The second chapter of the report will focus on the literature review, whereby there will be a
critical analysis of previous research literature on M A. Literature Review The literature review looks
at the motives of (M A) with previous companies. In addition to this, previous studies will be looked
at to investigate the benefits of previous companies acquiring other companies to increase their market
capital. Literature on theories of M A shows that the motives of companies incorporates M A ,are
gaining operating and financial synergy, diversification gaining economic of scale, increasing the
market power and the increase of shareholders values. Mergers and Acquisition A profitable business
mix, seeing that explained by IFRS 3, is usually a transaction or occasion where a great acquirer gets
control with a number of businesses. A profitable business is looked at as an integrated number of
things to do, and property that is certainly competent at getting carried out and maintained for the
purpose of delivering any return on to traders, managers, owners or participants (C. Ferrer and Tang,
n.d.). Motives of Engaging in M A The motive for M A focuses on a quick way for companies to
increase the scale of their company by extending their market growth in order to enter new markets.
The reasons companies engage in M A can be that it integrate the transaction to maximise shareholder
value. This reflects on companies pursuing an acquisition if it creates value and

48. Child Sexual Violence And Sexual Abuse
Child on child sexual violence/assault cases has been on the rise. Sexual Violence is defined by
Webster s dictionary as any illegal sexual contact that usually involves force upon a person without
consent or is inflicted upon a person who is incapable of giving consent (as because of age or physical
or mental incapacity) or who places the assailant (as a doctor) in a position of trust or authority. There
is growing understanding that the vast majority of children who has experienced sexual assault, are
typically assaulted by someone they know, and often times trust (family member, friends of family,
their own friends etc.) (Chaffin, 2008). Research indicates that over one third of children sexually
assaulted is committed by someone under the age of 18 (Browne Finkelhor, 1986; Paolucci et al.,
2001). Sexually victimized youth experiences greater risk for a multitude of antisocial behaviors and
sexualized behaviors compared to those who have not experienced sexual victimizations (Browne
Finkelhor, 1986; Paolucci et al., 2001). Tragic events are reported nearly every day such as the 2009
Gabriel Myers case involving the 7 year old boy who had previously been sexually assaulted by
another child and later ended his own life. The importance of child on child sexual violence/assaults
tend to be overlooked by adults due to the denial of thinking the youth and/or adolescences we love
cannot possibly cause abuse and harm upon another loved one(COCSA, 2014). It is reported that

The veil was a greatest different between the boy and the girls. They only make it mandatory that all
the girls should wear the veil especially in the school, but the boys on the other hand there is no rules

been separated them from their friends due to the veil. The have complained that they are felling hot
with the veil. They started to remove it. they say that they are in the monsters of darkness. The color
of the veil was the dark, which I think they are wear ling in bondage. It makes them not to belong or

50. The Life of Alexander Pope
An honest man s the noblest work of God. Alexander Pope life was rough as a child because of his
illness. In his early career, and even later in life he wrote a lot of famous poets. Alexander Pope lived
his life as a famous writer until death from his childhood sickness
Alexander Pope an, English poet was born on May 21, 1688 on Lombard Street in London. His father,
Alexander Pope, a Roman Catholic, was a linen draper who afterwards retired from business with a
small fortune, and fixed his home on 1700 at Binfield in Windsor Forest. Pope s education was a
purpose to his father s religion so that excluded him from the public schools. Before he was twelve he
had obtained a slight knowledge of Latin and Greek language masters from a priest in Hampshire.
Pope also received other masters from a school in Twyford near Winchester, Thomas Deane School in
Marylebone, and later Hyde Park Corner.
Between the age of twelve and seventeen there were a lot of applications for pope to study. During the
process it weakened his health, and he developed tuberculosis of the spine which left him crippled and
harmed his view of life in so many ways. Pope then thought of himself dying, but a friend Thomas
Southcott, gave him advice about a famous physician named John Radcliffe, which he prescribed a
diet and exercise. Under this treatment the boy recovered his strength and spirits. He thought himself
