The 10 Essential Public Health Services
The 10 essential public health services are distributed under the three core functions of assurance,
assessment, and policy development. Every community and public health organization should
undertake activities that represent the 10 essential public health services. The American Heart
Association is a nonprofit agency that embodies some of the essential public health services.
Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, the AHA has many local offices that serve various communities
across the country. It is important for the AHA to be involved in building healthier communities
because heart disease and stroke are the number 1 and number 5, respectively, leading causes of death
in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2015). The
AHA was founded in 1924 by six cardiologists and is the nation s oldest and largest organization
dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. The AHA provides CPR education training, science
based treatment guidelines to healthcare professionals, and education to lawmakers, policymakers, and
the public to advocate for change that will improve the health of the community (American Heart
Association, 2015).
The mission and vision of the American Heart Association
The mission of the AHA is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke . Their
2020 vision is to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent, and reduce deaths

Describe 3 features of the structure or organization shared by all three of these types of muscle that tell
you that these tissues ought to be classified as muscle. These should be features found in all types of
muscle but not in any other tissue.
Muscle tissues all have elongated cells.
5. Now compare 3 features of the structure or organization of all three types of muscle that make them
different from each other and easy to identify. You need to describe THREE features and compare
them in ALL types of this tissue. Be sure to compare specific features you have observed as they
appear in all three of these tissues.
The appearance of their cells are all different. Skeletal are unbranched and parallel, smooth are spindle
shaped, and cardiac are branched and connected. They also vary in striations. In skeletal, they are
present and obvious. There are no striations in smooth. The striations are in cardiac but are very faint.
Their nucleus are also different. Skeletal have more than one nucleus. Smooth have just one nucleus
and cardiac varies.
Note: Since this is an exercise based on what you can observe in a microphotograph your descriptions
should involve structure only and not function or location, since these are not observable in these
images. If you use notes or other information from the web site, text, or other resources, be sure you
are writing about something you can actually observe on the

Active Learning Strategies Analysis
Active learning strategies consist of a large and different variety of activities that share the common
factors of involving students in thinking about the knowledge and information they are doing
(Bonwell Eison 1991). These strategies are used to engage students in critical thinking,
communication with peers, expressing ideas, exploring their own attitudes and values, giving and
receiving feedback, and reflecting on the learning process. These strategies are done with the students
inside or outside the class, completed by working as individuals or in groups, and can be done with or
without the use of technology. When the instructors use active learning strategies, they will typically
spend more time in helping students developing their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In my grade3 class, I use the Pair Share and the Close Reading strategies, I read about these strategies
before, and now I am applying them in my class. The Pair Share Strategy is one of the ways that let
students talk about an issue or topic in class is to use the think/write pair share method. (Lyman,
1992). In this strategy, I present a problem in the class and then give students 30 seconds to one
minute to think about or write out their response. Then, the students pair up and explain their
responses to one another for 3 to 5 minutes. Finally, the results are discussed, this technique takes only
about 4 to 6 minutes of class time, and it could be done once in each class session. This strategy has
worked successfully in my English class, where I introduced a topic about Community Service I asked
my students to think about the role of community service work then I asked them individually about
their decision and choices about doing a community service work. The class was asked to do
community service work and students who changed their ideas and thoughts about it are asked why
they did so. The Close Reading Strategy improves reading comprehension and provides engagement
in the subject (Bass Linkon, 2009). In class, I model how to read and interpret a passage while the
students follow in their books. After that, some students may be called individually to read aloud and
interpret similar selections. After reading passages of a story, students will be divided into groups of
three or two and be asked to talk about and decide what the selection means, and then paraphrasing it
in their own words. I will ask the groups to give their interpretations and analysis before providing my
analysis. This technique worked well with grade 3 students, where they had to do this strategy every
time we start a new reading

Analysis Of Canadian Economy
Essay: Canadian Economy Analysis and Measures will be taken 1. Introduction and Background of
Canadian economy
In the international foreign exchange market, the Canadian dollar, Australian and New Zealand are
collectively referred to as resources currency (Issa, Lafrance Murray, 2006). The reason for this is that
the currency exchange rate changes are greatly influenced by the international commodity prices.
Canada is humongous, sparsely populated and rich in oil, minerals, timber and Marine resources.
Formed by Canada s export trade, agriculture, forest and energy products. Energy and raw material
prices will make Canadian dollar. In a long run, people generally believe that Canada economy is
vulnerable to external shocks. The influence of the export trade is influenced by international
commodity price fluctuations. Canada international trade relies highly on the United States. However,
due to the proper macroeconomic policy applied, Canada can always successfully resist the external
economic shocks, which display the strong toughness. The economic ... Show more content on

fiscal policy, the Canadian government should reduce the bank threshold of load, low interest rates;
strengthen policy guidance and preferential tax policy. In the aspect of monetary policy, the Canadian
government should focus on increasing the speed of money liquid rate, and increase the market

The Today Show is a more personable than CNN. The Today show talks about the top story grabs
people from the audience and does makeovers and give away. The Today show also has celebrity
movie stars and musicians on their show every day. The shows also give out great advice for everyday
people like how to cook, or the best clothes and beauty products on the market. The Today Show is
more entertainment news then CNN s hardcore news. The news stories on Today and CNN seemed to
be from appropriate and credible sources. When CNN was giving the report online a stream of video
accompanied the journalist. Their also showed maps and statistics support what they were reporting.
They also had interview with credible (you would like) people like senator and campaign associates.
CNN is known for being a credible network; however I feel the need to still research anything I am

Chinese Medicine As A Holistic Concept
Chinese Medicine as a Holistic Concept
Western medicine has four different areas: clinical, preventive, rehabilitation and general health care.
Western and Chinese medicine each has its own strengths in clinical and preventive medicine.
However, Chinese medicine has more advantages in rehabilitation and health care. Not all physicians
will agree with the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM. Even though Chinese medicine
is not effective for all illnesses and disease, Chinese medicine should be recognized more around the
world because it focuses on holism, maintenance and low cost therapeutic treatments which will be
further discussed in this essay.

The meridian channel is used to pin point areas of illness in the body. Some of the ingredients include
red ginseng, fungus, and Chinese red dates. The herbs are dried well before usage to preserve
nutrients, tone down the smell and for storage purposes in antique shelves. These herbs are classified
into three categories. First, the herbs are determined hot or cold. Cold herbs such as licorice treat
symptoms such as high fever, sore throat and constipation. Warm herbs such as red ginseng treat cold
symptoms such as cold hands and feet. Second, the medicines have distinct flavors of sweet, sour,
bitter, and pungent. Third, the meridian channel is used to determine where the problems occur in the
body as well as help perform action such as lifting. A person s health may improve from drinking
herbal medicine.
One example comes from my personal experience. Two years ago, my mother was concerned about
my health because of stress, indigestion and problems with sleeping and I was constantly taking anti
acids. I visited the practitioner and he prescribed me individual herbs to help relieve stomach
problems, sleeping and providing circulation in my body. The trial was held for two months. The taste
was extremely bitter yet palatable at the same time because of the sweet flavors of Chinese Red Dates
and other herbs inside which made it easier to drink. After drinking it for a few days, heat stimulated

A Summary Of Miriam ToewsA Complicated Kindness
The culture depicted in Miriam Toews A Complicated Kindness is a counterculture to modern society
and Christianity. Countercultures can have either a negative or positive impact on its members. In the
case of East Village, it creates a constricting environment where citizens are unable to expand their
mind. It is a fundamentalist Mennonite community where the church is the head of power. The
citizens focus most of their energy on being faithful followers of the church to ensure their place in
heaven when the rapture comes. As a result, people aren t given the tools they need to succeed outside
of their culturally isolated community. They take the bible literally with no room for interpretation.
With the lack of change in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If someone sins or acts in a way the church deems inappropriate they are excommunicated and forced
to live in exile in their own home. Instead of giving people support when they succumb to their
weaknesses, the church casts them out. The act of excommunication forces people to choose between
their faith and the love of their family. During the time period the novel is set, people were encouraged
to stand out and strive for better things. However, in East Village the opposite is true. As Nomi said,
[T]he biggest sin in our town was to be sure of yourself (Toews 65). She goes on to say that, The
second biggest sin in town was to need a lot of things (Toews 65). This expresses how the citizens of
East Village are expected to accept what they have been given and remain satisfied with how life is.
The atmosphere is suffocating and leaves no room for personal growth or self expression. It is this
kind of environment that creates a counterculture within the community; comprised mostly of young
adults looking for an escape.
East Village is stuck in its old fashioned ways and reluctant to accept the changes happening outside
of their community. No trains run through town and the doctors are given a hard time because they
both represent modern ideologies. Within the community, many people such as Lids parents believe
that the best way to help their ill

The Effect Of Peroxidase Production On Stressed Plants Essay
This experiment used beets to determine peroxidase production in stressed plants. The purpose of this
experiment was to test if the stressed plant would produce more peroxidase in a higher concentration
than the control plant. The stressor for this experiment was watering with salt water. This stressor was
chosen because it is a natural stressor to plants; especially along the coasts and where roads are salted
in winter such as the Midwest. The control plant was watered with plain tap water while the
experimental plant was watered with tap water plus salt. The salt water concentration was 1.2341
molar. After the two week stress period the stressed plant was much smaller, wilted, and shriveled
compared to the control plant. It also had less water content overall, which made the extraction
process somewhat more challenging. To test the peroxidase production in the plants several methods
were used, including: tissue printing, DOT blot assay, electrophoretic analysis, and a
spectrophotometric assay. It was concluded that the stressed plant did produce more peroxidase than
the control plant and in a higher concentration.
Peroxidase Production in Beets Stressed with Salt Water
There are many types of peroxidases found in plants, animals, and microorganisms. The plant
peroxidase that was studied in this lab is the class III plant peroxidase (POX) (Hiraga, Sasaki, Ito,
Ohashi, Matsui, 2001). Other studies have made it known that POXs participate in lignification,

Manorial Trade Network, the Indian Ocean Trade Network,...
Comparing and Contrasting the Manorial Trade Network, the Indian Ocean Trade Network, and the
Trans Saharan Trade Network
The creation of a strong and productive society depends on a stable economy. The development of
extensive trade relations in Africa, Europe, and Asia, was necessary for the existence of the highly
advanced civilizations that exist today. The Trans Saharan trade, Indian Ocean trade, and manorial
trade of Europe in the middle ages were major trading networks that flourished. The Trans Saharan
trade network connected the Mediterranean countries and Northern African countries with Sub
Saharan Africa. The Indian Ocean Trade network stretched from Eastern Africa to China, India, Persia,

Some great city states that benefited from long distance trade were Mali, Ghana, and Songhai. The
standardization of weights, measures, and currencies was one of the most important outcomes of trade
in the Trans Saharan. It was necessary in order for peoples of different languages, religions, and
cultures to communicate and negotiate. The most important facet of the trade networks is which
products are being traded. In the medieval manor the knights and nobles traded favors such as fixing a
building or building a shack or supplying agricultural produce. In the other trading networks a variety
of items were exchanged. The Indian Ocean network was best known for trading ivory, gold, silks,
iron, porcelain, ebony, spices, herbs, jewelry, cotton, animal hide, and slaves. The Trans Saharan trade
exchanged vast quantities of gold, salt, books, cotton, cloth, horses, guns, leather goods, and slaves.
All of these trading networks involved the participation of slaves although slaves played a different
role in each system.
Serfs and slaves had a different position in each of the trade networks. In medieval Europe serfs were
peasants who worked for the lord of the manor. The serfs did all of the laborious work on the farms in
exchange for protection and the right to work the land. This included

Essay Comparing Popol Vuh And The Odyssey
Popol Vuh and The Odyssey are epic stories that are considered, cultural touchstones; they dramatize
the life of a nation and help bind it together (Lawall, 3076). The two stories both form a connection to
the culture of Mayan, Popol Vuh, and Greek, The Odyssey, partly through the monsters that preside in
each epic. Because of the detailed descriptions of monsters or evil people and the known information
pertaining to each story s culture, the two can be connected. Therefore, Popol Vuh and The Odyssey
are comparable by cultures through the monsters that each story depicts. The monsters in Popol Vuh,
known as the lords of the underworld, are extremely important to Mayan Culture. In the cycle of tales
that comprises Part 3, the most celebrated portion of the Popol Vuh, Hunahpu and Xblanque vanquish
the lords of the Maya underworld, called Xibalba (a term of obscure etymology, provisionally
translated place of fright ). This material, likewise, is Central American and quintessentially Mayan.
Scenes from the story are preserved on painted vases of the classic period, recovered by archaeologists
from Maya burial chambers. Evidently, the sequence of events, in which the heroes twin fathers, One
Hunahpu and Seven Hunahpu, are undone by Xibalba and are ultimately ... Show more content on

to its language. Lin Manuel Miranda is being called this generation s Shakespeare. They both use

of Alexander Hamilton and the people he meets. The plot starts at the beginning of his life until his
death. Although its plot surrounds five decades it is very detailed. Miranda only reveals the details he
think are important. It is easy to keep up with even though it has a fast pace. The first act tells the
story of revolution and how Hamilton meets his wife Eliza Schuyler. In this act, Hamilton is trying to
make a name for himself by fighting in the war but instead becomes George Washington s secretary.
The second act is a bit more somber and has a slower pace. This act is also more dramatic and evokes
more emotion. In this act Hamilton and the other founding fathers are trying to create the country from
the ground up. Act two starts up very energetic and in the middle it becomes somber. Although it

From an economist s point of view, wage increases should be awarded as a result of increased
productivity. Productivity is defined by economists as the amount of physical output that can be
produced per working hour therefore an increase in productivity can only occurs as a result of this:
increased capital per worker, better management, improved technology, increase labor skill, and
economies of scale.
This definition of productivity allows the reader to conclude that rises in output per hour for each
worker are more likely to happen in sectors of the economy which rely heavily on machinery and
equipment during the process of production. By way of contrast, the public sector relies heavily on
people.
The public sector, despite improvements in technology, expansion of information and knowledge
which have provided most people with access to ways of improving their work and performance, the
fact that this sector of the economy relies so heavily on people and it s managed by the government in
one of its several roles makes it very inefficient. However its expected that the government should
engage in efficiently allocating the resources they are in charge of managing.

Essay On Why Ambien Visits America
Why Ambien related ER visits are increasing in America?
A recent study conducted by SAMHSA unit of the United States revealed that there was a steep
increase in the number of emergency room visits owing to the intake of prescribed sleep medications
like Ambien. The study analyzed ER archives from 2005 2010, which indicated that the ER visits
related to Ambienhad risen by 220 percent over the five years. The study report concluded that careful
monitoring of drugs like Ambien is a necessity for safe use by the public. This article further discusses
and uncovers the reasons behind the rise in Ambien related ER visits in America.
The reason
Most of the researchers on the drug monitoring unit, SAMHSA had mentioned that a major portion of
the Ambien ER visits were of people who were already on other medications. Ambien, alone, was not
triggering any severe side effects. However, the drug when coupled with other drugs or chemicals was
able to trigger severe side effects that resulted in the spike of ER visits during that particular period.
This is the principle of Drug interaction, where a certain drug that you take may change its properties
based on the othermedications you take. This could amplify the risk associated with the drug,
ultimately leading to serious side effects. Ambien, as a drug has severe interactions with other drugs,
which are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Copyright Law Was Established, And How The...
Nowadays, most of American institutions require the students to sign the plagiarism form before
attending the class in order to prevent their students from taking somebody s work without giving
credits. I believe intellectual laws are as important as any other law because it defines the ethical
aspect of the three core values of the United States of America liberty, freedom and democracy.
Copyright law is an intellectual law that grants ownership to the author and protects the author from
copyright infringement. This paper will discuss how copyright law was established, and how the
establishment influences advertising. I begin by examining the history of copyright before it became a
constitutional law. I will also explain why the copyright is protected under the First Amendment. After
that, I will interpret some significant copyright acts that had been established since it first started, but
my main focus will be on the role of fair use in the Copyright Act of 1976, which set up the primary
basis for the copyright laws in the United States. The investigation will demonstrate how fair use
relates to copyright matters in advertising, or commercial speech . The conclusion will emphasize the
significance of fair use in advertising.
The copyright law in America originated in the fifteenth century after England introduced the use of
the printing press. Due to the growth in the number of printing presses, the authorities began to seek
the control of the publication of

Compare And Contrast Holden And Catcher In The Raul
Two young men are both getting expelled from school. Both young men do not care that they are
getting expelled yet both lie saying they either entertain the idea of coming back (in Paul s case) or
that the school was utterly useless (in Holden s case). Paul in Paul s Case by Willa Cather, is a boy
who simply put, has no respect for school. He has a great passion for the viewership of arts especially
theatre and like everyone else, he hopes to achieve the american dream... just without the work.
Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, is mostly confused; is like a child lost in
a field. He does not know what to do nor where to go. However, he desires to be a catcher in a field of
rye that catches children that are just about to run off a cliff. This is perceived as he wants to stop
children from crossing that threshold of becoming an adult, i.e. falling off the cliff, and preserve their
innocence. Although both Paul s and Holden s peregrinations and ultimate endings have their
differences, Holden is a clear reflection of Paul because a considerable amount of each of their
characters is the same and even the dissimilarities between them still sustain a relationship. Both Paul
and Holden have a common fear for their fathers but Paul has it much worse than Holden. For
example, when he came home late one night after ushering at Carnegie Hall, he was imagining
different scenarios of how his father would react to Paul coming home. In one scenario, he thought

The Sociological Theory Of Criminology
Criminologist breaks down crime in three ways Biological, Psychological, and lastly Sociological.
The very first era that crime began to be discussed was during the Middle Ages, that s when many
people believed that people could not conform to what was considered normal thinking of their
society, where these people were labeled as witches or even possessed by what they may call satanic
entities. Siegel (2010). The very beginning of criminology was noted with classical school of thought
with Jeremy Bentham and Cesare Beccaria. Cesare theorized that crimes is in fact a product of what
we call a ration choice or decision which can ultimately be controlled with certain methods. Fast

Applications of Piaget and Vygostsky s cognitive developmental theories in a practical classroom

believes in individuals acquiring knowledge on their own. Both however, believe that the interaction
between development and learning hold significant implications for a child s growth. This essay
discusses some of the philosophical beliefs of each theorist in regards to a scenario based in the

Woolfolk amp; Markets (2007) discuss the use of certain cultural tools playing an important role in
cognitive development; these tools can be anything from the Internet to language or numbers. Ann
displays techniques through collaborative group work that run true to these theories. Piaget also
suggested an individual would not come to organise his/her operations in a coherent whole if they did
not engage in thought exchanges and cooperation with others (Piaget, 1947, p. 174). Ann is breaking
students up into different groups to perform different activities; this is portrayed through one group
collecting rainfall data and another group taking notes on the impact the rain has on ants living in the
area. Ann s socially constructive pedagogical approach to her lessons through the use of cooperative
learning will exemplify Vygotsky s theories of peer peer scaffolding as well as the zone of proximal

through Ann s teaching methods for her year five class. The zone of proximal development refers to a
conceivable range of learning evolution in regards to the students age and the amount of assisted

cooperative learning. Ann (as the more knowledgeable) would be required to offer a certain level of

How Feudalism Played A Major Role With State And The...

10/23/15
In a feudal system, a peasant or worker known as a vassal received a piece of land in return for serving
a lord or king, especially during times of war. (Feudal System) During the Middle Ages and other
parts of modern Europe, through texts, we can see how feudalism played a major role with state and
the government. Kings looked at it as higher authority and have more control over the knights, nobles,
and peasants that lie within that system. Though kings have more of a physical control throughout
these texts, I believe the queens have more manipulative power. In Marie de France s short story,
Lanval , it is obvious that the state was in control of many lives. Throughout the ... Show more content

Later in the story, the reader experiences the power of the queen when Lanval denies her offer to love
him.
The Queen saw him go off alone, And she headed straight for that knight. She sat near him, she called
him over,
She spoke as her heart would move her:
Lanval, I really do respect you,
I really care, I really love,
And you can have all my love. ( France 393 399)
The queen began to accuse Lanval of being gay because he had never had a woman show him
pleasure. Suddenly, Lanval admits that he is in love with someone else who would be far better than
the queen herself, which sent the queen away crying. Soon afterwards, Lanval was commanded to
appear in court without delay. The Queen s assertive power was shown by her ability to punish
innocent people, meaning she obviously got what she wanted regardless of whether it was right or not.
The negative characteristics of the king are shown in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight . The
descriptions the author uses to describe King Author and the descriptions used at the end of the story
to describe the positive characteristics of Bertilak de Hautdesert. King Authur represents the king of

because many people believe that there are enough churches already in the area and that there is no

The Mexican Revolution Of Mexico And The United States Essay
During the Mexican Revolution there were many prominent figures that emerged during the long
struggle. Some of the figures had a positive impact on the region, and some others a very negative
impact on the people of Mexico and their quest for an uncorrupted government. One figure that stands
out in the border region between Mexico and The United States during this time is General Francisco
Pancho Villa. To understand Pancho Villa s significant role during this uprising it is important to
understand who Villa was prior to the revolution, and what acts lead to his rise to power.
Francisco Pancho Villa (born Doroteo Arango on June 5th, 1878) was known as a bandit prior to his
life as a Mexican General. Villa was born to sharecropper parents on a hacienda in San Juan Del Rio,
Durango, Mexico. After the death of his father, Villa only in his teens became the head of his family.
Villa soon found himself on the run from the law and the Haciendas owner after he shot the man in the
foot after an altercation over Villa s sister; this is what led to him initially becoming an outlaw. While
on the run as a fugitive Villa adapted other well known bandito ways of making money including
robbing haciendas, and sticking up wealthy mine owners, this is also when he officially dropped
Arango and only used Francisco Pancho Villa (Katz, 1998). Some bits of folklore can be found when
describing Villa s actions during this time period. There are tales of him acting like a Robin

Development Of The Vienna Secession
Development of the Vienna Secession
The establishment of the Viennese Secession in 1897 marked the genesis of modern art in Austria a
nation at the time known for its strong holdings on conservative traditions and values. It was the first
movement of artists and designers who were devoted to the renewal of art s meaning the projection of
inner states of emotion. Led by Gustav Klimt, the Secession was the most influential breakaway;
rejecting the revivalist styles endorsed by the conservative academies, the group promoted an art that
would celebrity modernity. The Secession was largely attributed for the responsibility of the rise to
international fame of several of its members, including Gustav Klimt, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Koloman
Moser and Josef Hoffman, who helped Austrian art become renowned once again. There were no
unifying characteristics between paintings or sculptures, or even architecture: instead, its members
were committed to the ideal of modernizing Austrian art by acquainting it with latest modern art
movements Art Nouveau, Post Impressionism and Expressionism. The initial movement was short
lived. By 1905, there were internal divisions ultimately fracturing the group s monopoly on the scene
for contemporary and decorative arts (Rosenman). However, the Secession was vital for the promotion
of Austrian contemporary art.
In 1903, Hoffman and fellow associate Moser and banker Fritz Warndorfer founded the Wiener

Levi s decided to place their product in department stores as they had good relations with the retailers
due to their volume sales of jeans. They did not have any real relationship with the specialty stores
where the independent male shopped. Rather than placing their new products which would be
considered as high end in these specialty stores and where they would be among the lower price range,
they chose to place their products in the department stores where their products showed a deviation
from the regular Levi formula and were considered very pricy as compared to other high end
department store brands such as Haggar s. This price raised some concerns among the retailers as they
were unsure if Levi s formal wear would move out of the stores at a required pace. Also, due to price
quality inference, if Levi s was placed in a specialty store, the Q2 customer might prefer to buy a more
expensive product. Levi tried to sell these formal clothes in the same stores as their casual clothes for
the same segment of customers. Customers saw these formal clothes at the same place priced higher
than the casuals, and therefore found them to be expensive.
Due to the above reasons and lack of promotion, Levi s achieved only 65% of their sales target. They
promoted the wrong product under their brand, for the wrong price at the wrong place. They failed to
understand the needs of their customers.

The Iran Hostage Crisis Of 1979 Essay
In the late 20th century, the government of the United States was going through a difficult time.
Having just came out of World War II, the Soviet Union and the United States were in a state of
political and military tension known as the Cold War. Little attention did the government of the United
States give to the other issues at hand. While, in the Middle East there was a storm forming, the
citizens of Iran were undergoing an evolution into a democratic government; breaking apart from it
monarchical rule. During this extremely crucial phase for Iran, the U.S. and United Kingdom stepped
in to overthrow this democratic development to strengthen their own agendas. In response to this
corruption that caused oppression amongst the Iranian people, they rose up against the U.S. and held
our citizen s hostage. This was known as the Iran Hostage Crisis of 1979. In this essay we will discuss
how the evolving decisions and events that built up to the Iranian Hostage Crisis were due to a
shortsightedness and lack of the understanding of people. Iran a country once ruled over by a monarch

their poems. Both poets want their mistress to commit to them so they can have control over them.
Both Robert Browning in Porphyria s Lover and Andrew Marvell in To His Coy Mistress explore the

Liberty, when it begins to take root, is a plant of rapid growth. This quote in a letter to James Madison,
from George Washington, on March 2nd, 1788, explains that once the push for liberty comes through
and change is made, it is like the snowball effect. At this point of the war, there were constant losses
for the Continental Army they were lacking faith and hope for their liberty. The soldier s enlistments

That meant leaving as soon as their enlistments were finished and leaving Washington with fewer
troops. Washington felt that he needed to have another battle while he still had many men and before
the British troops retired for the season of winter until spring (McCullough 267). Since the battle
happened towards the end of their session, the results of the battle highly affected the soldier s
decision to stay or leave. If it wasn t for Trenton, there would never have been a reason to stay in the
army and that would have affected the war in a negative way for the colonies. Our only dependence
now is upon the speedy enlistments of the army. If this fails, the game is pretty near up, (McCullough
269). This quote by Lund Washington explains that the colonies needed as many soldiers and troops as
possible to make their chances of succeeding better. Without the amount of troops that decided to stay
because of the Battle of Trenton, Washington s troops would have been significantly smaller and
would have caused losses in battles. George Washington s tactics and skills when it came to the
Continental army and war were very helpful in the many battles that he led. In Trenton, Washington
planned a sneak attack on the British, in which they had to cross the Delaware River on. Because of
Washington s quick thinking and great army skills allowed the Continental Army to succeed in

How Does Harry Potter Affected Pop Culture
For as long a literature has been around, books have been written that define the culture of a

Summary Of Eveline By James Joyce
Motivation and Paralysis in Eveline Through symbolism, history, and allusion, James Joyce depicts a
struggle between paralysis and motivation in the short story, Eveline. The story shifts between the
happenings of present day and past recollections. Early on, the protagonist, Eveline makes the
decision to leave home in order to make a better life for herself. She wants to flee from her abusive,
alcoholic father. Eveline determines that it is time to make her own choices. When it comes time to
leave, Eveline is mentally unable to leave and face the unknown. Her feet remain paralysed on the
dock in front of the boat headed for Bueno Aieres. The readers know that the options she has is to
leave home or remain trapped in the miserable life she currently resides in. Maybe she does not leave
with Frank because she is afraid of how he will treat her. There is the possibility that she is just too
attached to her home, or that she is influenced by the mental and physical abuse she has endured.
Whatever the cause may be, paralysis is indeed present, along with motivation, in Eveline. As well as
having reasons as why not to leave home, Eveline has motives pushing her to change her life. Based
on information given at the beginning of the story, it can be assumed that Eveline s father was abusive.
Even now, though she was over nineteen, she sometimes felt herself in danger of her father s violence.

Why Do Motorcycle Saddlebags
There are few motorcycle accessories that are more important than your motorcycle saddlebags, and it
s important that you give them proper care to make them last. Remember, your saddlebags will be
holding some of your most important stuff, and since they are usually out of sight, out of mind, it is
easy to forget about them when it comes time to care for your bike.
Remember the days before you had motorcycle saddlebags? I sure do. I used to wear a backpack
which, when loaded, would offset the balance and sometimes make for a scary ride. If I ever rode
through wet weather, my gear in the backpack would almost always get soaked. Trust me when I tell
you that it s almost impossible to dry out a down sleeping bag by campfire on a cool spring evening!

Any more often than this and you are wasting your time, and the cleaning product. If you ride in the
sun, or your bike spends time parked out in the sun, a cleaner/conditioner with UV (ultraviolet)

turn them into brittle and useless scraps of leather.
When using the cleaning/conditioning product for the first time, wipe it on a small area on the
underside, and look for any staining or discoloration before cleaning the whole bag. Some leather
experts say to stay away from products containing petroleum products. My rule of thumb is to use
something that others have had great success with regardless of the ingredients.
I try to look for leather products that penetrate deeply and offer good moisture protection. One great
old standby is saddle soap. Saddle soap is as old as leather (it seems), is cheap and is very gentle on

enough protection from the elements.

Morality And Religion In The Stranger By Albert Camus
In The Stranger, author Albert Camus challenges societal beliefs related to morality and religion. The
main character, Meursault, does not experience emotion as the majority of society does. He is
seemingly unbothered by his mother s death, which many around him find disturbing. Meursault is
entertained by the simple things in life, and does not appear emotionally attached to much of anything.
His apathetic behavior is ultimately his downfall.
The story begins with Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don t know (3). The lines introduce
Meursault s key personality trait, his indifference. He simply states the facts and has little emotional
expression when talking about his mother s passing. At his mother s funeral, he felt others expected
him to talk and show emotion and it made him uncomfortable.
When he returns home to Algiers, Meursault carries on with life as normal. Over dinner one evening,
his neighbor Raymond tells of his desire to punish his mistress for infidelity, and asks Meursault to
write a letter to the mistress for him. Meursault agrees, saying I tried my best to please Raymond
because I didn t have any reason not to please him (32). While Raymond is a man of questionable
morals, he acts with purpose. Meursault, on the other hand, acts with mostly passive indifference,
doing things simply because he doesn t have a reason not to do them.
The next afternoon, Raymond calls Meursault at work and tells him about a group of Arabs following
him, and that

Blaiming the Paparazzi
In 1997, Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris, which was blamed on the paparazzi that were
chasing her. Because the accident happened in France, no British charges can be laid against the
photographers. However, nine were charged with manslaughter in France, but the charges were thrown
out in 2002. Three photographers Jacques Langevin, Christian Martinez and Fabrice Chassery were
convicted of invasion of privacy for taking pictures of Princess Diana and were each fined one euro in
2006. Of course it is obvious that the public is intensely curious to know more about celebrities, but
don t you think celebrities have the right to be private?
First of all, let us define who the paparazzi are and what they do for a living. A paparazzo is a
photographer who takes pictures of athletes, actors, celebrities, politicians etc... on a daily basis. As a
matter of fact, paparazzi s tend to chase celebrities wherever they go. Whether it was to the Academy
Awards, shopping at a mall, or even going to the gym. Nowadays the paparazzi are going way beyond
the limits and are becoming more likely bizarre. They are competing against each other and are trying
to have the best exposed pictures of celebrities they could get at any cost. They don t care if they hurt
or stress celebrities. They simply want to be the best.
California s first civil anti paparazzi law was signed on January 1st, 1999. This law protects celebrities
from physical invasions and trespassing. This law wasn t enough, so on

The Movement Toward Communism In Upton Sinclair s The Jungle
In the novel The Jungle, Upton Sinclair makes the movement towards communism necessary and
inevitable by exposing the most disgraceful aspects of capitalism. He does this by exploring the
oppressive power structure within the meat packing industry. Additionally, Sinclair studies the
unbelievably imbalanced distribution of wealth created by capitalism. Ultimately Sinclair conveys that
capitalism is a systematic way to maintain the proletariats trapped in their socioeconomic status while
assuring that the bourgeoisie remain in power for generations to come. Sinclair makes it clear that
communism is a necessary step to liberating the lower classes from the grasp of the upper class. The
movement towards communism in the novel The Jungle seems ... Show more content on

Sinclair describes the power structure within the meatpacking industry as, the Beef Trust ... was the
incarnation of blind and insensate Greed. It was a monster devouring with a thousand mouths,
trampling with a thousand hoofs; it was the Great Butcher it was the spirit of Capitalism made flesh.
(Sinclair,137) Through this metaphor Sinclair illustrates the unsanitary, unsafe, and merciless
conditions the workers of the meatpacking industry were subjected to both on the job and in every
other aspect of their daily lives. All while the upper class spends enormous amounts of money without
taking in to consideration the miserable lives the lower classes are forced to live. In The Communist
Manifesto Marx states, No sooner is the exploitation of the labourer by the manufacturer, so thus far,
at an end, that he receives his wages in cash, than he is set upon by the other portions of the
bourgeoisie, the landlord, the shopkeeper, the pawnbroker, etc. (Marx, 18) In essence, the capitalistic
power structure not only exploits the proletariat in the work environment but also in every other
financial aspect possible including securing basic needs like housing, food and clothing and no where
is this more apparent than in the town surrounding the meatpacking plants of

Nuclear Weapon Production Of Nuclear Weapons Essay
Nuclear Weapon Production Apocalypse
Hunter Honeycutt
Western Kentucky University Glasgow
Nuclear Weapon Production Apocalypse
If the production of nuclear weaponry is not diminished, it will cause the end of everything. With the
production of nuclear weapons increasing, it will only be a matter of time until a nuclear war breaks
out. When a nuclear weapon is used, it has three killing modes. The first would be the impact, when
the bomb first hits. The second would be the shockwave that extends outward a good deal. Thirdly, the
radiation effect would kill several more after that.
How does a nuclear weapon work you might ask? Well there are two ways a nuclear weapon can
work. One is nuclear fission and the other is nuclear fusion. In nuclear fission, the nucleus of an atom
is split in two by a neutron. To do this, isotopes will need to be present such as uranium (uranium 235,
uranium 233) or plutonium (plutonium 239) (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament). An isotope is the
same element but with different numbers. Nuclear fusion is kind of how the sun works. According to
Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, two small atoms are fused together to create one large atoms.
This typically requires hydrogen or hydrogen isotopes (deuterium, tritium), to form a larger one
(helium isotopes) (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament).
As stated in a previous paragraph, a nuclear weapon will kill on contact. According to a website article
by History.com, the first bomb that was

The Awakening Of The Dark Corridor
Shattering across the floor, glass shards fly everywhere and the door creaks from no distinct origin, all
common occurrences of the tale tell signs of the supernatural, who haunt by creeping behind the lone
wanderer of the dark corridor. Most do not investigate the source of these sounds; however, as humans
the thirst for discovering the unknown lurks inside. To quench thrillers thirst without actual
confrontation, The Awakening takes viewers into a spaceous, eerie boarding school that used to be a
private mansion. This ghost movie derives from typical characteristics of the subgenre haunted
houses. Unexpected sounds, intense music, and a ghostly monster scare the viewer as this movie plays
out, but the twist is finding out the monster is not the ghost. The Awakening s twist in plot allows the
movie to surpass the layout of a haunted house movie by making the movie more interesting, suprising
to the viewer. To begin, haunted movie s subgenre characters usually come in five types known as the
skeptic, the ghost or spirit, the defender, the instigator, and the outsider. Mr. Malloy, also known as the
defender, asks Florence, a novelist and ghost hunter during the 1920s, into the school because he
wants her to find the ghost and ease the other children s minds. Florence Cathcart, the protagonist and
skeptic, assist the boarding school in finding a mysterious spirit lurking the halls after an attending
student turns up murdered a day after seeing this ghost. The ghost, who is a

A Report On The Outbreak Of Salmonella
Salmonella is a gram negative bacterium present in contaminated food or water. Typhoid fever is a
systemic infection caused by the serotype Salmonella typhi and can be fatal without proper
intervention. Instances of resistant typhoid are high in less developed countries. Resistance occurs
when genetic mutations prevent antibiotic mechanisms of action, making current antibiotics less
effective. The purpose of this drug screen was to target oncological drugs and diversity library
compounds to identify novel antibiotic substances. To perform the initial drug screen, we exposed
Salmonella typhimurium to various compounds and chemotherapeutic drugs. The positive and
negative controls were ampicillin and Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), respectively. We used
spectrophotometry to measure the growth of salmonella in the plate. Hits were identified as
compounds with an absorbance below 2 standard deviations of the mean DMSO value, meaning that
hits would have an absorbance below 0.065. We identified that the FDA approved drug capecitabine
had an average absorbance of 0.035. To perform a dosing series, capecitabine was diluted in a 1:2
ratio, making 13 dilutions total. The dosing series revealed that capecitabine is most effective at doses
lower than 6.25 μM. Through this process, we determined that the oncological drug Capecitabine
(Xeloda) has dose dependent antibiotic properties. Capecitabine is a prodrug to U5 fluorouracil, used
to treat colorectal, gastrointestinal,

Analyzing Erin Gruwell s Freedom Writers
STAR Analysis Freedom Writers
Freedom Writers is based on a true story about Erin Gruwell, a first time teacher who given a class of
underperforming students. The students have experienced gang and racial violence which is displayed
throughout the movie. I am going to focus on the leadership behavior of Erin Gruwell through her
style of coaching. Through her leadership of coaching her students, she was able to open their eyes to
a whole new perspective of the world that there is not just gang and racial violence, but there is
something special about each and every one of them.
Situation: The situation that she was in is having to teach the students who no longer care for their
education but to survive out in the world. The story is based ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

She wants to be involved and connect with her students as much as possible. She does not want
anyone to fall behind; therefore, she is doing what she can to help bring up their grades. She wants
them to know that she cares.
Action: Erin took upon a lot of actions to show her students she cares about their future and them as
an individual. She was inspiring. She created excitement so the students can see that their dreams will
come true. An example of this was when Erin gave a toast for change. She wanted her students to
know that anything was possible as long as they put their heart and mind to it. This will help motivate
them in achieving their dreams and pursuing higher education after high school.
She also helped stimulate their intellectual learnings. She did this by having them play games to
connect better with one another as well as easier for them to process what they are really learning. An
example of this was using the rapper, TuPac, to teach them about poetry. She also brought up
controversial topics such as racial discrimination to help the students relate themselves to the
problems they face every day. She even got their attention when she covered the topic about the
Holocaust and took them out to dinner to meet the

  • 2. The 10 Essential Public Health Services The 10 essential public health services are distributed under the three core functions of assurance, assessment, and policy development. Every community and public health organization should undertake activities that represent the 10 essential public health services. The American Heart Association is a nonprofit agency that embodies some of the essential public health services. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, the AHA has many local offices that serve various communities across the country. It is important for the AHA to be involved in building healthier communities because heart disease and stroke are the number 1 and number 5, respectively, leading causes of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2015). The AHA was founded in 1924 by six cardiologists and is the nation s oldest and largest organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. The AHA provides CPR education training, science based treatment guidelines to healthcare professionals, and education to lawmakers, policymakers, and the public to advocate for change that will improve the health of the community (American Heart Association, 2015). In my grade3 class, I use the Pair Share and the Close Reading strategies, I read about these strategies before, and now I am applying them in my class. The Pair Share Strategy is one of the ways that let students talk about an issue or topic in class is to use the think/write pair share method. (Lyman, 1992). In this strategy, I present a problem in the class and then give students 30 seconds to one minute to think about or write out their response. Then, the students pair up and explain their responses to one another for 3 to 5 minutes. Finally, the results are discussed, this technique takes only about 4 to 6 minutes of class time, and it could be done once in each class session. This strategy has worked successfully in my English class, where I introduced a topic about Community Service I asked my students to think about the role of community service work then I asked them individually about their decision and choices about doing a community service work. The class was asked to do community service work and students who changed their ideas and thoughts about it are asked why they did so. The Close Reading Strategy improves reading comprehension and provides engagement in the subject (Bass Linkon, 2009). In class, I model how to read and interpret a passage while the students follow in their books. After that, some students may be called individually to read aloud and interpret similar selections. After reading passages of a story, students will be divided into groups of three or two and be asked to talk about and decide what the selection means, and then paraphrasing it in their own words. I will ask the groups to give their interpretations and analysis before providing my analysis. This technique worked well with grade 3 students, where they had to do this strategy every time we start a new reading ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Countercultures can have either a negative or positive impact on its members. In the case of East Village, it creates a constricting environment where citizens are unable to expand their mind. It is a fundamentalist Mennonite community where the church is the head of power. The citizens focus most of their energy on being faithful followers of the church to ensure their place in heaven when the rapture comes. Instead of giving people support when they succumb to their weaknesses, the church casts them out. The act of excommunication forces people to choose between their faith and the love of their family. During the time period the novel is set, people were encouraged to stand out and strive for better things. However, in East Village the opposite is true. As Nomi said, [T]he biggest sin in our town was to be sure of yourself (Toews 65). She goes on to say that, The second biggest sin in town was to need a lot of things (Toews 65). • 9. The Effect Of Peroxidase Production On Stressed Plants Essay This experiment used beets to determine peroxidase production in stressed plants. The purpose of this experiment was to test if the stressed plant would produce more peroxidase in a higher concentration than the control plant. The stressor for this experiment was watering with salt water. This stressor was chosen because it is a natural stressor to plants; especially along the coasts and where roads are salted in winter such as the Midwest. The control plant was watered with plain tap water while the experimental plant was watered with tap water plus salt. The salt water concentration was 1.2341 molar. After the two week stress period the stressed plant was much smaller, wilted, and shriveled compared to the control plant. It also had less water content overall, which made the extraction process somewhat more challenging. To test the peroxidase production in the plants several methods were used, including: tissue printing, DOT blot assay, electrophoretic analysis, and a spectrophotometric assay. It was concluded that the stressed plant did produce more peroxidase than the control plant and in a higher concentration. Peroxidase Production in Beets Stressed with Salt Water There are many types of peroxidases found in plants, animals, and microorganisms. • 11. Essay Comparing Popol Vuh And The Odyssey Popol Vuh and The Odyssey are epic stories that are considered, cultural touchstones; they dramatize the life of a nation and help bind it together (Lawall, 3076). The two stories both form a connection to the culture of Mayan, Popol Vuh, and Greek, The Odyssey, partly through the monsters that preside in each epic. Because of the detailed descriptions of monsters or evil people and the known information pertaining to each story s culture, the two can be connected. Therefore, Popol Vuh and The Odyssey are comparable by cultures through the monsters that each story depicts. The monsters in Popol Vuh, known as the lords of the underworld, are extremely important to Mayan Culture. After that, I will interpret some significant copyright acts that had been established since it first started, but my main focus will be on the role of fair use in the Copyright Act of 1976, which set up the primary basis for the copyright laws in the United States. The investigation will demonstrate how fair use relates to copyright matters in advertising, or commercial speech . The conclusion will emphasize the significance of fair use in advertising. Both young men do not care that they are getting expelled yet both lie saying they either entertain the idea of coming back (in Paul s case) or that the school was utterly useless (in Holden s case). Paul in Paul s Case by Willa Cather, is a boy who simply put, has no respect for school. He has a great passion for the viewership of arts especially theatre and like everyone else, he hopes to achieve the american dream... just without the work. Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, is mostly confused; is like a child lost in a field. He does not know what to do nor where to go. However, he desires to be a catcher in a field of rye that catches children that are just about to run off a cliff. This is perceived as he wants to stop children from crossing that threshold of becoming an adult, i.e. falling off the cliff, and preserve their innocence. Although both Paul s and Holden s peregrinations and ultimate endings have their differences, Holden is a clear reflection of Paul because a considerable amount of each of their characters is the same and even the dissimilarities between them still sustain a relationship. Both Paul and Holden have a common fear for their fathers but Paul has it much worse than Holden. • 20. The Sociological Theory Of Criminology Criminologist breaks down crime in three ways Biological, Psychological, and lastly Sociological. The very first era that crime began to be discussed was during the Middle Ages, that s when many people believed that people could not conform to what was considered normal thinking of their society, where these people were labeled as witches or even possessed by what they may call satanic entities. Siegel (2010). The very beginning of criminology was noted with classical school of thought with Jeremy Bentham and Cesare Beccaria. Cesare theorized that crimes is in fact a product of what we call a ration choice or decision which can ultimately be controlled with certain methods. Fast forwarding to many years ahead criminologists then have expanded on compounded, and developed new ideas as to why people commit crime which include theories that point the finger to the main three biological, psychological, and sociological. Sigmund Freud established a well known psychoanalytic theory which were based solely on personality defects which then claimed that crime was caused by improper development during their early years. With such theories, it was said the criminal is not however responsible for their behavior directly. It is however blamed on nonconforming personality traits which include aggression, spontaneity, and dissonance. However, this is often hard to measure, and these theories have had little impact recidivism or deterring criminal actions (Akers Sellers, 2004). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One figure that stands out in the border region between Mexico and The United States during this time is General Francisco Pancho Villa. To understand Pancho Villa s significant role during this uprising it is important to understand who Villa was prior to the revolution, and what acts lead to his rise to power. Francisco Pancho Villa (born Doroteo Arango on June 5th, 1878) was known as a bandit prior to his life as a Mexican General. Villa was born to sharecropper parents on a hacienda in San Juan Del Rio, Durango, Mexico. After the death of his father, Villa only in his teens became the head of his family. Villa soon found himself on the run from the law and the Haciendas owner after he shot the man in the foot after an altercation over Villa s sister; this is what led to him initially becoming an outlaw. While on the run as a fugitive Villa adapted other well known bandito ways of making money including robbing haciendas, and sticking up wealthy mine owners, this is also when he officially dropped Arango and only used Francisco Pancho Villa (Katz, 1998). Some bits of folklore can be found when describing Villa s actions during this time period. There are tales of him acting like a Robin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Development Of The Vienna Secession Development of the Vienna Secession The establishment of the Viennese Secession in 1897 marked the genesis of modern art in Austria a nation at the time known for its strong holdings on conservative traditions and values. It was the first movement of artists and designers who were devoted to the renewal of art s meaning the projection of inner states of emotion. Led by Gustav Klimt, the Secession was the most influential breakaway; rejecting the revivalist styles endorsed by the conservative academies, the group promoted an art that would celebrity modernity. The Secession was largely attributed for the responsibility of the rise to international fame of several of its members, including Gustav Klimt, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffman, who helped Austrian art become renowned once again. There were no unifying characteristics between paintings or sculptures, or even architecture: instead, its members were committed to the ideal of modernizing Austrian art by acquainting it with latest modern art movements Art Nouveau, Post Impressionism and Expressionism. The initial movement was short lived. By 1905, there were internal divisions ultimately fracturing the group s monopoly on the scene for contemporary and decorative arts (Rosenman). However, the Secession was vital for the promotion of Austrian contemporary art. In 1903, Hoffman and fellow associate Moser and banker Fritz Warndorfer founded the Wiener Werkstatte, Vienna Workshop. It was a decorative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They did not have any real relationship with the specialty stores where the independent male shopped. Rather than placing their new products which would be considered as high end in these specialty stores and where they would be among the lower price range, they chose to place their products in the department stores where their products showed a deviation from the regular Levi formula and were considered very pricy as compared to other high end department store brands such as Haggar s. This price raised some concerns among the retailers as they were unsure if Levi s formal wear would move out of the stores at a required pace. Also, due to price quality inference, if Levi s was placed in a specialty store, the Q2 customer might prefer to buy a more expensive product. Levi tried to sell these formal clothes in the same stores as their casual clothes for the same segment of customers. Customers saw these formal clothes at the same place priced higher than the casuals, and therefore found them to be expensive. At this point of the war, there were constant losses for the Continental Army they were lacking faith and hope for their liberty. The soldier s enlistments were also very near to their end and time was going by fast; many were prepared to leave and not signing up again. Overall, the Continental Army was headed towards failure. That meant leaving as soon as their enlistments were finished and leaving Washington with fewer troops. Washington felt that he needed to have another battle while he still had many men and before the British troops retired for the season of winter until spring (McCullough 267). Since the battle happened towards the end of their session, the results of the battle highly affected the soldier s decision to stay or leave. If it wasn t for Trenton, there would never have been a reason to stay in the army and that would have affected the war in a negative way for the colonies. Our only dependence now is upon the speedy enlistments of the army. If this fails, the game is pretty near up, (McCullough 269). This quote by Lund Washington explains that the colonies needed as many soldiers and troops as possible to make their chances of succeeding better. Without the amount of troops that decided to stay because of the Battle of Trenton, Washington s troops would have been significantly smaller and would have caused losses in battles. George Washington s tactics and skills when it came to the Continental army and war were very helpful in the many battles that he led. • 38. Summary Of Eveline By James Joyce Motivation and Paralysis in Eveline Through symbolism, history, and allusion, James Joyce depicts a struggle between paralysis and motivation in the short story, Eveline. The story shifts between the happenings of present day and past recollections. Early on, the protagonist, Eveline makes the decision to leave home in order to make a better life for herself. She wants to flee from her abusive, alcoholic father. Eveline determines that it is time to make her own choices. When it comes time to leave, Eveline is mentally unable to leave and face the unknown. Her feet remain paralysed on the dock in front of the boat headed for Bueno Aieres. The readers know that the options she has is to leave home or remain trapped in the miserable life she currently resides in. Maybe she does not leave with Frank because she is afraid of how he will treat her. There is the possibility that she is just too attached to her home, or that she is influenced by the mental and physical abuse she has endured. Whatever the cause may be, paralysis is indeed present, along with motivation, in Eveline. As well as having reasons as why not to leave home, Eveline has motives pushing her to change her life. Based on information given at the beginning of the story, it can be assumed that Eveline s father was abusive. Even now, though she was over nineteen, she sometimes felt herself in danger of her father s violence. (4). Eveline s father started taking his drinking aggression out on ... Meursault is entertained by the simple things in life, and does not appear emotionally attached to much of anything. His apathetic behavior is ultimately his downfall. The story begins with Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don t know (3). The lines introduce Meursault s key personality trait, his indifference. With the production of nuclear weapons increasing, it will only be a matter of time until a nuclear war breaks out. When a nuclear weapon is used, it has three killing modes. The first would be the impact, when the bomb first hits. The second would be the shockwave that extends outward a good deal. Thirdly, the radiation effect would kill several more after that. How does a nuclear weapon work you might ask? Well there are two ways a nuclear weapon can work. One is nuclear fission and the other is nuclear fusion. In nuclear fission, the nucleus of an atom is split in two by a neutron. To do this, isotopes will need to be present such as uranium (uranium 235, uranium 233) or plutonium (plutonium 239) (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament). An isotope is the same element but with different numbers. Nuclear fusion is kind of how the sun works. Typhoid fever is a systemic infection caused by the serotype Salmonella typhi and can be fatal without proper intervention. Instances of resistant typhoid are high in less developed countries. Resistance occurs when genetic mutations prevent antibiotic mechanisms of action, making current antibiotics less effective. The purpose of this drug screen was to target oncological drugs and diversity library compounds to identify novel antibiotic substances. To perform the initial drug screen, we exposed Salmonella typhimurium to various compounds and chemotherapeutic drugs. The positive and negative controls were ampicillin and Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), respectively. We used spectrophotometry to measure the growth of salmonella in the plate. Hits were identified as compounds with an absorbance below 2 standard deviations of the mean DMSO value, meaning that hits would have an absorbance below 0.065.
