The Repressions Of Women In Le Morte DArthur By Thomas Malory
The impressions of women throughout history influenced the way authors depicted women in their
works. The belief that women are the cause of men s problems dates back to the bible s first chapter.
The chapter lead men to believe the ultimate fall of humanity was at the hands of a woman.
Consequently, this belief has been carried from generations to generations throughout history. The
legend of Morgan Le Fay changes behaviorally from evil and spiteful in Le Morte D Arthur by
Thomas Malory to kind and nourishing in Avalon from Vita Merlin by Geoffrey of Monmouth because
of the different notions of women throughout history. During the Middle Ages women went from
being their father s daughters to their husband s wives to their children s ... Show more content on

Certain individuals decided to change their beliefs. Some began to see women as nurturing creatures
rather than the bane of all of man s existence. This idea reflects in the poem by Geoffrey of
Monmouth, Avalon from the Vita Merlini . This poem tells the tale of a beautiful island where nine
sisters live. The sisters are generous and kind to all who visit their home. The poem then shifts focus
to Morgan Le Fay, almost bragging that she may cure sick bodies (Geoffrey of Monmouth). This
differs from the Middle Age text greatly. Even the tone of the poem is light and airy in contrast to the
dark and mysterious tone of the earlier story. The poem goes on to tell a story of Morgan Le Fay
saving someone, explaining she saved a man that had gone into battle with her own honorable hand
(Geoffrey of Monmouth). This man was her half brother Arthur, and whether the characters know of
their relation is a mystery to the audience. In the poem Morgan Le Fay saves her brother; in the story
she nearly kills him. It is clear the narrator of the poem admires Morgan Le Fay, as shown by the use
of word honorable to describe her on many occasions. The depiction of the women in this story
reflects how some people felt toward women in the Modern Ages, and once again turning life into art.
Art imitates life in these two works. The societal beliefs of the Middle Ages were prominently against
women having any power, though there are always some

My Hero A Hero
What does make a hero a hero? Is it there looks? Alternatively, maybe is it their personality? However,
the question is what are those essential qualities that make one a hero? Different people require
different heroes to look up to or try to emulate. However, whoever it may be, they all possess certain
qualities. My hero is my mother, for the reason that she is selfless, compassion, and courage. That
kind of selflessness can often be premeditated, since concentrating on others needs often winds up
helping one accomplish one s own goals. However, a heroic leader does so without any anticipation of
a return. The display and concern show the care one has for others. This can often apparent itself in
strong but gentle actions planned to increase the lives of others. Courage and bravery come to mind
first when we think of heroism. However, it is difficult to achieve anything truly heroic unless one is
up against overwhelming chances. As Nelson Mandela put it, Courage is not the absence of fear, but
the triumph over it. These minor acts of heroism rarely attract any notice. A true hero is always
sympathetic, benevolent and shows a great deal of compassion and sympathy to those poorly or in
agony. He or she keeps away judgements; that are oriented to the self and embraces an attitude that
serves others. Selflessness is an extremely important heroic trait, maybe the uppermost important. It is
the driving force behind heroism. Heroes become heroes when they do something for

Dante s Accomplishments
Dante Alighieri was an italian poet and philosopher who is known worldwide for his masterpiece, The
Divine Comedy, which details Dante s journey through purgatory, hell, and paradise or heaven. The
Comedy represents the christian idea of fate, and the soul s journey towards god, and is widely
considered the greatest piece of literature ever composed in the italian language. He wrote several
other great works, including Convivio (The Banquet), La Vita Nuova (The New Life), and De Vulgari
Eloquentia (on the eloquence of vernacular). He is widely considered the father of the italian
language, and many have likened Dante s literary achievements to those of Shakespeare. He was born
in Florence in the year 1265 sometime between May 21 and June 20.

The Velocity And Wave Speed
Velocity: In reference to waves, the velocity can be described as the distance a point on the wave, for
example the crest, moves or shifts in a given period of time. This means that the velocity or wave
speed, is the metres the wave travels per second. A wave may have a high frequency, vibrating back
and back, but can still have a low velocity. Hence, a wave can be moving back and forth with a low
frequency and still have a velocity. Therefore we can get the equation v = λ/T or v = f λ.
Wavelength: The wavelength is the distance from one point on a wave to the same point on the next
wave along. We can measure the wavelength of a wave from one peak of a wave to another. One wave
length can be seen or described as the distance between to peaks or troughs of a wave. Equation v =
d/T therefore... d = v x T (m)
Behaviour of the waves
Reflection: This is when a wave approaches the boundary between two mediums, when this happens a
part of the wave undergoes reflection across the boundary. The amount of reflection from the wave
depends on the variation of the two mediums. Sound waves reflecting off surfaces can lead to two
different wave occurrences, either an echo or a reverberation. Reverberation usually happens in a
room with a particular height, width and length of roughly 17 meters. This sound wave which the
human brain receives barely lasts for more than a minute fraction of a second; the human brain stored
a particular sound in memory for up to 0.1 seconds. When the

Christian Shaffer Interview
I had the pleasure of interviewing Christian Schaffer, the Co anchor of Good Morning Maryland at
WMAR TV at ABC 2 News in Baltimore. Broadcast news is a medium that is thrilling, exciting, and
fast paced. Schaffer took time out of his action filled days as a Co Anchor to allow me to interview
him and get inside his world.
Schaffer s main responsibilities consist of delivering the news accurately and fairly, without any basis
on the topics reported. One of his biggest challenges he faces is delivering the news in a fair and
honest way. He also touched on how he strives to be entertaining and personable and deliver the news
in such a way that gets people to continue watching day after day. In news, there is a stress to maintain
audiences due to the amount of competition from other new sources.
A typical day in the life for Christian is very busy and keeps him on his toes. He works on Monday
Friday and the hours vary and usually he gets off work whenever there is nothing else needed to be
done. His typical day starts at 3am, when he typically reports to the office to read over the ... Show

The long term goals of the firm are to increase viewership and ratings. To achieve that, focus must be

The Statement Of Engineering Methods For Design And...
The ultimate goal of my research is to implement engineering methods for creating material designs
that would improve the quality of the life for humanity. More specifically, I implement the knowledge
and skills that I have developed over the past years to make progress in design and engineering of
smart materials, biomaterials, and metamaterials. By the witness of my former projects, publications,
degrees, and certificates, I possess solid knowledge and skills in designing and conducting
experimental, numerical and analytical research in interdisciplinary branches of material sciences. To
date, I have obtain major background in the fields of composite design, bioengineering, and multi
scale simulation, and accomplished multiple project in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A sample realization of the codes for simulating 3D particle reinforced composite is depicted in Figure
3. The results of these efforts have been (and will continue to be) published in peer reviewed journals
of science and presented in major engineering conferences. Moreover, methods developed for this
research can be made compatible for advancing research in phase change materials, coatings, tissue
engineering, and many more frontiers of science.
During my master s degree at Villanova University, I conducted an experimental research under the
supervision of Dr. Jens O.M. Karlsson at Biothermal Sciences Laboratory . In this NSF funded
research position, I designed, built, and optimized different types of glass capillary microfluidic
devices, and utilized them for producing micro emulsions. Subsequently, these micro emulsions were
used for investigating ice nucleation and crystallization in supercooled ultrapure water, for which I
used high speed imaging technique in conjunction with a powerful optical microscope and a cryo
stage. Figure 4 is a micrograph taken from one such video. Needless to mention, the knowledge
gained from these experiments can open new doors to understanding mechanisms of damage in cells
and tissue due to preservation at cryo temperatures.
The demand for smarter design of materials for health related and energy related applications keeps

Tourism Effects on Machu Picchu
High in the Andean mountain range, nestled on a ridge between two mountains high above the valley
floor below sits the amazing city and archaeological site of Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is about
1400 kilometers south of the Equator on the eastern slope of the Peruvian Andes. The site lies near the
head waters of the Amazon River and is on the ridge between two prominent mountain peaks –
Machu Picchu and Hauyna Picchu – about 500 meters above the valley bottom (Wright and Kenneth,
2 3). Machu Picchu, believed to be the royal estate of the Inca ruler Pachacuti, is the most well known
of all the Inca archaeological sites. Professor Hiram Bingham discovered the site in July of 1911 and
excavated it with the help of National Geographic and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is also the impending problem that with the increase of tourism in Machu Picchu there will also
be an increase in the crowding and congestion on the roads, footpaths, and in the narrow streets of the
site. In addition, tourists also compete with residents for available services and facilities (a prime
example of this is the local train service in Peru, in which many backpackers tend to use the local train
service rather than the much more luxurious and expensive tourist train). An increase in visitors to the
area will also lead to an increase in the crime in the area. Finally, a big social/community impact from
tourism has been the desecration of burial sites and the removal and display of human remains from
Machu Picchu to further stimulate the tourist industry, which has ultimately led to the destruction of
the Indian spiritual heritage. (Barcelona Field Studies Centre S.L., Machu Picchu: Impact of Tourism)
Environmental Costs and Benefits The environmental costs to increased tourism to Machu Picchu out
number the benefits in many ways. Environmentally, tourism does help to facilitate increased
awareness of the need for conservation and preservation of natural, cultural, and historical resources.
Machu Picchu could also be considered a clean industry, but that might be asking a lot when one looks

Writing Project
Day 0: Background and Mission Start It is February here on Earth. The year is 2071. Humans have
long abandoned the idea of completely colonizing Mars. Instead, they have decided to build outposts
in space much like the European explorers in the 16th century, on route to China for trade to protect
the motherland s trade route from enemies and refuel ships. About 10 years ago, scientists began
building an outpost on Mars a few miles from Gale Crater. Robots are maintaining the facility, but
their hands are not quite suited for wiring the base. Thus, NASA deemed it necessary to send humans
to Mars to get the base running for future missions on an improved version of NASA s Orion
spacecraft. The Orion spacecraft ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

What are the Benefits of Sleeping on a Waterbed Mattress?
When people think of waterbed mattresses, they often think of sloshing and rolling
about during the night. However, more and more people are learning that a waterbed
mattress can also be great for distributing your weight and supporting your spine for a
more comfortable night s sleep.
Waterbed mattress technology has made great strides since the introduction of the first
waterbeds over 40 years ago. Today, you can choose from a variety of water motion
options as well as consider a soft side waterbed mattress, which looks just like a normal
mattress but provides more support.

Franz Lieber and the Lieber Code
Franz Lieber and the Lieber Code In the midst of the deadliest war in American History, there stood a
voice of morality and reason on the United States soil. Franz Lieber, a German political philosopher,
created a series of political works in which he explained the importance of defining ethical boundaries
for soldiers in times of war. In 1863, President Lincoln commissioned Lieber to create a series of laws
to reflect his ideas ( Francis Lieber, 2013). Lieber went on to create what became known as Lieber s
code, which was history s first attempt to distill, formalize, and systematize various general concepts
that international law, at the time, considered proper restraints for the combatants towards each other
and towards civilians (Forbes, 1985). But what effect did the code have on the Civil War and the
preceding time period? Created at an important juncture in history, Lieber s code not only had a
profound effect on the views of controversies during the Civil War, but also influenced the way the
world viewed the ethical obligations of military personnel during times of war. Civil War Prisons
Throughout the Civil War, prisoners of war were abundant and thus a popular topic of debate. This
likely influenced Lieber s ideas as to what was important to include in the code, leading to much of
Lieber s code entailing the treatment and exchange of prisoners of war. Early in the war prisoners
received equal treatment from both sides. However the lack of a systematic programs

The Zookeeper s Wife Sparknotes
The novel The Zookeeper s Wife begins with readers understanding the lives of the main characters,
Jan, Antonina and their son Ryś. In early September 1939 the Nazis horribly destroyed the routine of
daily life in Warsaw. The city was physically ruined, including many of the zoo s buildings, shelters,
and cages. Many of the innocent animals died in the bombings and the Nazi soldiers savagely
murdered those who survived when they went on a fun killing spree. This caused the famous zoo to
become a destroyed shadow of its former self. With most of the cages left abandoned, Jan and
Antonina, the zookeepers of the Warsaw zoo, found it necessary to use these shelters as temporary
hiding places for Jews on the run. This safe haven was provided ... Show more content on

Through the fear and terror of the war, Antonina was able to provide some clam and peacefulness to
her guests and family (Ackerman 2007). A specific incident that was truly horrific was when Nazi
soldiers threaten to murder all the people living in the villa. The soldiers ordered everyone to stand
and a straight line, as they pointed their guns at them. At the time, Antonia was pregnant with her
second child and she could barley keep her balance. The soldiers took the Fox Man s fifteen year old
helper behind the shed and a shot was fired. The soldiers then came back and indicated that Ryś was
next. Ryś followed the Nazi behind the shed and another shot was heard. Antonina was in complete
shock as devastation overcame her. Then all of a sudden, the Nazis told the boys to come out with the
dead chicken. It turns out this was a game played by the soldiers in order to frighten the family. This
horrific game shows the truly evil intentions of the Nazi soldiers, and the physical and emotion torture
they caused their victims (Ackerman 2007). Unfortunately in July 1942, the Nazis began liquidating
the Warsaw Ghetto by shipping hundreds of thousands of Jews to the death camp Treblinka. The war
raged on, but by the following June a true miracle had occurred. Antonia gave birth to her daughter
Teresa, who was a blessing and ray of hope amongst so much terror, cruelty, and death. The

The Effect Of Alkaline Phosphatase On Para...
A SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC ASSAY OF THE ACTIVITY OF ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE ON
PARA NITROPHENYLPHOSPHATE IN THE PRODUCTION OF PARA NITROPHENOL
M. Smit1
1 Department of Biological Sciences, University of Cape Town, Rondebosch
Introduction:
Alkaline phosphatase is a biologically important enzyme, catalysing the hydrolysis of phosphate
groups in organic compounds through the process of dephosphorylation. para Nitrophenylphosphate
(pPNP) is an example of a chromogenic substrate of this enzyme, because the product of hydrolysis of
pPNP is the yellow para nitrophenol (pNP) compound along with inorganic phosphate (McComb,
Bowers and Posen, 1979).
The Michaelis Menten equation for enzyme kinetics (Murray, 2002) predicts an initially high rate of
enzyme activity as the concentration of the substrate is relatively high, followed by a gradual
reduction in enzyme activity as the substrate is consumed. The enzyme alkaline phosphatase is also
known to be subject to competitive inhibition by inorganic phosphates via the formation of the
phospho enzyme, thus blocking the active site to pPNP for dephosphorylation (Kim and Wyckoff,
1991).
The enzyme kinetics of alkaline phosphatase on this chemogenic substrate is the focus of this study, in
an attempt to determine the trend in the rate at which pNP concentration changes over time and the
impact of a high concentration of the inorganic phosphate product on enzyme activity. It is
hypothesised that the rate of enzyme activity will initially be

Author Biography:
Jonathan swift born on (30 November 1667 19 October 1745) was an Anglo Irish satirist, essayist,
political pamphleteer (first for the Whigs, then for the Tories), poet and cleric who became Dean of St
Patrick s Cathedral, Dublin. He is remembered for works such as Gulliver s Travels, A Modest
Proposal, A Journal to Stella, Drapier s Letters, The Battle of the Books, An Argument Against
Abolishing Christianity, and A Tale of a Tub. Swift is probably the foremost prose satirist in the
English language, and is less well known for his poetry. Swift originally published all of his works
under pseudonyms such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, M.B. Drapier or anonymously. He is
also known for being a master of two styles of satire: the Horatian and Juvenalian styles.
Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin, Ireland. He was the second child and only son of Jonathan Swift

How to Go Green While in College Essay
Millions of young adults leave to go to college every year. Many responsibilities come with living
without one s parents for the first time. One responsibility is taking care of the Earth. Since there are
no parents in college to tell one to recycle, buy organic items, unplug appliances when they are not
being used, and many more, many college students forget to do these simple things. Students go to
college to start a new life for them, going green is a great way to do that. When a car breaks down, one

A good way to time one s shower is to listen to a CD. After a certain track, one can turn off the water.
This help save thousands of gallons a year.
Aluminum is also very easy to recycle. Aluminum is the most recycled item in The United States, but
we need to do more (Earth 911).Americans use more than 80,000,000,000 aluminum cans a year
(Earth 911). Recycling just one can, saves enough energy to run a television for three hours (Earth

one pound of steel can power a sixty watt light bulb for over a day (U.S. Environmental Protection

(Earth 911). If not recycled, it takes an aluminum can over 500 years to decompose (Earth 911).
Another great way to recycle is to recycle plastic bags. California, New York, Rhode Island, and

The Emotions Of Creon In Antigone By Sophocles
Throughout the play Antigone by Sophocles, Antigone does not have one main motivation, but rather
a blend of many. As Antigone s three most evident motives are doing the right thing, flouting Creon s
authority, and expressing her overall anger at life, the first and the last are most important. In this play,
the combination of Antigone s emotions toward her grave past and her obligation to her brother,
regarding the gods, fuses together to be the incentive for her actions, regardless of Creon. Challenging
Creon is almost a side effect, a medium through which Antigone can achieve her goals.
Antigone s past is a messy one: an incestual and murderous curse put on her family, her mother s
suicide, her father s self mutilation and banishment, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, in Antigone s conversation with Ismene, she reveals more of her motivations. Antigone s
anger is carried over, but the reader is also introduced to a budding grief. She states that Creon has no
right to keep [her] from [her] own (59). The fact that Polynices is her brother is enough to for
Antigone to justify her actions against the law. The tone of this statement feels like a grief stricken
plea, to do what is right for her brother. She loves him, and he deserves to be buried. Antigone then
mentions that Creon and everyone who refuses to bury Polynices is dishonor[ing] the laws the gods
hold in honor (91 92). For Antigone to then act against everyone, would, therefore, be the right thing,
in terms of religious beliefs. For someone other than Antigone this might be sufficient enough
motivation, but since she is so complex it is only a factor. A thoughtful, rational person probably
wouldn t be so quick to jump into a decision that would inevitably lead them to their death, even if
that decision was the right one. Since Antigone is so upset with her life, she doesn t care if she lives or
dies, if the past is any indication of her future, only more pain will come. This is what makes her do
the right thing. Antigone believes burying her brother is right, and that the laws of the gods must be
obeyed, so it is a factor, but since she actually takes action and buries him, she throws her life away.

allowing them some things with the purpose of getting the best for them. I have some similarities in
the way of how she treats her daughters but I also share some differences with her drastic methods. I
do believe that Chinese methods are effective; however, I do not agree with them and also I do not
believe they are superior than others. My parents are a combination of Western and Chinese, which I
believe it is the correct way to raise a kid. My parents always said to me that doing something in

adaptation to their sympatric environment (Howe et al., 2003; Savolainen et al., 2007; Leimu and
Fischer, 2008; Salmela, 2014). We hypothesized that if A. arenaria shows evidence of local adaptation,
we expect the plants of the experimental site, and closely related ones, to have a greater performance
than allopatric populations (Vander Mijnsbrugge et al., 2010). Results indicated an increase in survival
with increasing distance from the study site in the first phase of the experiment. In the second phase,
the relation between survival and distance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, we did not see an effect of the origin of the plants on the condition, so we cannot completely
confirm this theory. Also, since the relation between the distance and survival was positive, we cannot
say we confirmed the theory of local adaptation. In our analysis, we used geographic distance as a
measure for the differentiation between the various populations. In most cases, environmental distance
is the best way to study population divergence ( Joshi et al., 2001; Bischoff et al., 2006; Leimu and
Fischer, 2008; Bischoff and Tremulot, 2011). This implies that populations that are close to each other
but very dissimilar can differ a lot more from each other than populations that are more distant but
more similar (Bischoff et al., 2006). In Leimu and Fisher (2008) they stated that geographical distance
is only a good measure if it is correlated with environmental distance, where the latter can be an
important selective agent for local adaptation. By this, the results could be different with the use of the
environmental distance. Also, the experimental plants were in the field during autumn and winter,
implying that aboveground herbivores were largely absent. It is demonstrated that also aboveground
herbivores can act as selective forces in plant populations, since these herbivores can have strong
negative effects on the plant fitness (Jarosz and Davelos, 1995; Abdala Roberts and Marquis, 2007;
Arany et al., 2009). Taking both

Anne Moody s Coming Of Age Essay
HIST278 Essay One Joseph Malthus, 42863655
Anne Moody s Coming of Age in Mississippi is a story of a black girl growing up in the American
Deep South during the development of the Civil Rights Movement. Moody notices the racism that
envelops her life and attempts to understand why it exists, despite the absence of reasonable
grounding. Suffocating under the restrictions and fear caused by systematic racism, she ultimately
decides to become an activist, and takes an active role in demanding equality and a better life for
Black Americans.
Moody s childhood was riddled with incidents where white people imposed their superiority and
control over her and other blacks. She sought to understand why American society was structured this
way. Moody first begins thinking about this after she is forced away from her friends in a segregated
cinema. While her friends were allowed to sit in the main atrium to watch the film, Moody and her
family were forced to use a separate entrance and sit behind them on a balcony. Moody noticed that
her friends whiteness meant they were treated better, but at her age she could not understand why their
skin tone made them better than her: why their whiteness provided them with a pass to downstairs in
that nice section and [her] blackness sent [her] to the balcony .1 She became determined to discover
what made whites more deserving of better homes and schools compared to those which blacks were
consigned to. Moody did not see skin tone as a

Brand Identity And Marketing Messages
Brand Identity and Marketing Messages
Before launching a product or marketing a message, many ideas for brand identity, such as artistic
logos and clever jingles to draw in the consumer and become memorable, stay on the presentation
board in the marketing executive s office. For the wildly successful product marketing that basks in a
near cult following, such as Coke, Apple, or McDonalds, there are the utter failures such as the
Gremlin, the Susan B. Anthony dollar, and numerous spin offs of successful television shows.
Therefore, when OfficeMax Inc. launched Elf Yourself , an interactive holiday e card on its website in
2006, its success took everyone by surprise. Thacker, an OfficeMax marketing and advertising
executive admitted, When you think of holiday shopping, you don t think office supplies (Colorado
State University Global Campus, 2014).The following discussion focuses on the objectives, timely
launch, and how OfficeMax reached their intended target with the surprise hit of the 2006 holiday
season. This popular marketing campaign is a perfect example of everything going right at precisely
the perfect time.
Campaign Objectives and Timeline for Completion
Behind any retail campaign, no matter the product niche, is to bring consumer interest to the product
or service, thus increasing sales. In the Elf Yourself campaign, OfficeMax used a unique form of
marketing by inserting their brand into an Elf e card that had no direct association with its products.

Summary Of Giorgio Agamben s Homo Sacer
Giorgio Agamben s book Homo Sacer begins by addressing the topics of bare life and meaningful
socially contextualized life in relation to the philosophical terms of zoē and bios respectively.
Agamben toys with the idea that sovereignty naturally coincides with bios, whereas zoē is only
included in politics in the form of exception. (Agamben 10) This assertion runs parralel to the idea of
atavism, which is essentially the principle that humans can often revert to primal and ancestral
behaviors when left unchecked by society. This reversion is generally regarded as a violent and
undesirable; philsophers such as Hobbes would certainly feel that atavism is partially responsible for
the life of man being solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short, which is a core thematic component of
his work Leviathan. (Hobbes 78) Despite Agamben and Hobbes s shared notion that primitive
behaviors fall outside the natural sphere of politics and are relatively negative, there is a strong case to
be made for atavism s role in positive human sociopolitical structures. One such positive instance is
familial structures. Although the concept of sovereignty can be expressed through the father figure and
paternal subjugation, and the concept of bare life can be established philosphically by the figure of the
mother and an individual s birth, it it nontheless true that human beings seek out families and attempt
to live in concordance with their parents , siblings , and childrens needs and desires

Good People, by David Foster Wallace Essay
David Foster Wallace s Good People, is a very touching, powerful story about a young, unwed,
Christian couple facing an extremely difficult decision and the moral and religious implications that
may result. As the story begins, we are allowed into the head of Lane Dean, a college student, as he
sits on a park bench with his girlfriend, Sheri. Lane and Sheri find themselves faced with an
unplanned pregnancy, which causes them to battle with several moral and religious dilemmas. Both of
them are devout Christians who have built their moral beliefs upon God and their religious
upbringing. Although torn Sheri schedules an abortion, which weighs on Lane deeply. Lane, frozen in

(1) readers can literally almost catch a whiff of the honeysuckle and lilacs in the air. Wallace s precise
and purposeful style of language allows us to get a true feeling for Lane, our protagonist, and the
terror, desperation and nervousness he feels in making a horribly difficult decision. He hated himself
for sitting so frozen. He could almost visualize himself tiptoeing past something explosive. A big
stupid looking tiptoe, like in a cartoon. The whole last black week had been this way and it was wrong
(1) portrays the sheer terror and desperation that Lane is feeling. Wallace tells this story from a limited
omniscience point of view, only allowing us into Lane s head. This point of view complements Lane s
character as well as the tone of this story as it helps to set the frightened and worried mood of the story
as it permits us, as readers, to experience the inner conflict and desperation that Lane is feeling. The
setting, in my opinion, has hints of foreshadowing that work nicely with Lane s inner conflict. When
Wallace writes [t]hey were up on a picnic table at that park by the lake, by the edge of the lake... (1)

Women During The 19th Century Essay
Although corsets at this time led to broken bones and a death in 1665 (Olsen 74), this garment was
worn throughout the 18th century. During this period, Turkish harem women wore clothes most
similar to ours. They wore cloaks over their chemise and loose trousers while also being veiled (Olsen
59). This era marked conservatism in women s clothes. During the first wave movement, fashion did
not become dynamic until the 1900s. In 1851, dress reformers tried to popularize a pair of baggy pants
beneath a knee length tunic (Olsen 125). Although this effort was unsuccessful, it marks the beginning
of dress reform and sixty five years later, hem lengths would rise by ten inches (Olsen 177). The
1920s marked the era of the flappers, when the use of makeup became commonplace and women wore
knee length dresses and bared more skin (Olsen 207, 214). A few decades after, pants would be
allowed, introducing scandalous shorts along with it. Although heavily criticized, the stigma of shorts
lessened, showing us more familiar styles. Dress reform went full force in this era.
Fashion during the second wave feminism was marked the increase of more comfortable clothing.
Women were primarily working in factories for the war effort, so their dress was consisted mainly of
pants and high collared shirts []. Fashion in this era would eventually go towards flashy padded
shoulders and colorful pants [].

Comparing Language In The Cask Of Amontillado And The Lady
A writer s craft of the English language, is like a spiders web, beautiful and unique. It is necessary so
the story can be woven in to create a masterpiece. The author can change the story entirely by
changing the way the narrator speaks. In The Cask of Amontillado , The Scarlet Ibis , and The Lady,
or the Tiger , each craft of language provides a vivid background for the story to unfold. The way each
writer provides certain vocabulary, and way of speaking enhances the reader s experience by giving
the reader a chance to guess the time period. Readers also guess the area the story is taking place by
using their knowledge that different regions in countries have different slang. The way the narrator

Near the beginning of the story, the narrator talks about their neighbor Miss Leedie, who was in love
with President Wilson and wrote him a letter every day (416). While talking about Miss Leedie, the
author seamlessly tells the setting of the story. President Wilson served in America from 1913 to 1921
and it is mentioned that he was the president during this short story. Later in the story, the narrator
mentions the barn loft was covered with a film of Paris green (418). Paris green was used by
Americans around the 1900s. The tone of the story starts out nostalgic, telling events that happened
when the narrator was younger, but then later the tone turns into a more regretful and guilty voice, for
pushing the younger brother past his limit. You can tell this by looking at the beginning, and seeing
how the narrator was so happy when his brother was born. The narrator then gets greedy and selfish,
making the younger brother feel bad about himself. Aw, come on, Doodle, I urged. You can do it. Do
you want to be different from everybody else when you start school? Does it make any difference? It
certainly does, I said (422). The determination to have a normal brother grows, and you can see this
when the narration is more about the wants of the narrator instead of how happy he is to have a
brother. Time was short, and Doodle still had a long way to go if he was going to keep up with the
other boys when he started school (422). The whole story evolves when the author makes the narrator
s heart harden and saying that the younger brother was more and more flawed. The author crafts his
story so that you have to think, instead of just telling you the purpose of the story, enhancing the

The Effects Of Diabetes And Driving Ability
There have been a variety of studies performed trying to determine the effects of diabetes and driving
ability. The possible negative effects on top of preexisting concerns about the safety of the elderly
driving only adds to the seriousness of the situation. Driving under the influence is illegal because it is
not safe, and Cox, Fonder Frederick, Kovatchev, Julian, and Clarke s study (2000), Progressive
Hypoglycemia s Impact on Driving Simulation Performance, proves there to be potential serious harm
because of impairment. The researchers hypothesized that low blood sugar, also called hypoglycemia,
could impair one s driving ability.
The study consisted of 37 adults with type 1 diabetes. All participants have had diabetes for a
minimum of two years, have taken insulin, are current drivers, and not be taking any medications that
influence hypoglycemia or driving factors. There were 16 men and 21 women. On average, the
participants have had diabetes for 17.5 ± 10 years. There were three general issues investigated. First,
was the blood glucose levels where driving impairment was first observed. Second, the blood glucose
levels at which the person detects impairments and whether or not they take corrective action by
pulling over or drinking soda. And lastly, the actual underlying mechanisms related to the awareness
and corrective behavior. They conducted the study by closely monitoring many factors while they
participated in a realistic driving simulation course. The

CHAPTER I
THE DIVISION OF LABOUR.
When a work is broken down into much smaller work and distributed into individuals that specialize
in that work, we can achieve maximum productivity.
For example the work of making a computer program can be divided up into these assignments. 1. The
main programmer handles the Coding. 2. A debugger scans for errors and bugs within the program. 3.
The designer designs the interface of the program.
By using this example we can show how productivity works, because if all of those tasks will be ...

farming.
There are some works that are only available in large cities.
Example, In a big city a construction worker can specialize to a specific work, he only does the
welding of metals, while others do the cutting of metals, carrying the cement bags and etc.
A construction worker in a province would do almost all tasks related to construction welding, placing
the foundation, roofing, and finishing.
I was able to reconnect this to the computer Game I was playing, Assassin s Creed. In that game I own
a community where my workers produce Goods like timber, and different animal pelts and skins and
even meat. By means of water carriage a more wide market is opened to my community than what
land carriage alone can afford. Throughout history the seacoast cities have developed much faster than
inland cities.

Application And Specification Of A Computer Network
On December 6, 1967, the Department of Defense awarded a contract with the purpose of the design

(ARPANET) was created. By October 15, 1969, computers at the University of California Los
Angeles and Stanford were connected and communicating (Internet History from ARAPNET to

Also of note are the new wearable devices. Today, instead of pulling out our wallet to pay for
groceries, we can simply scan our Apple Watch in front of an Apple Pay terminal and have the funds
immediately deducted from our account. When arriving at the airport, your connected device can
sense your current location and immediately let your bank know you are preparing for a trip. As you
drive, your connected vehicle can download real time traffic and make suggested route changes before
you get stuck in traffic. More importantly, many modern vehicles are equipped with sensors that can
detect a collision and immediately dispatch help. The connected world has far exceeded our
expectations. One area of concern that revolves around the IoT is cyber security. Throughout the 2016
presidential primaries, cyber security has become an increasingly hot topic. During the January 17th,
2016 Democratic Primary Debate, cyber security was discussed no less than six times (Leatherby,
2016). As the IoT continues to expand, hackers have expanded their attacks as well. In July of 2015,
hackers were able to remotely take control of the systems onboard a Jeep Cherokee and completely
disable the vehicle (Kerner, 2015). Unfortunately, this is not an isolated event. Both the FBI and

Although urine iodine samples have been shown to give reliable results for populations , they do not
provide usable measures of iodine intake for individuals due to large day to day variations.
Determining iodine intake via a 24 hour recall dietary record is not an accurate way to determine
habitual iodine intake. In order to determine an individual s habitual intake of iodine, it is estimated
that 20 50 days of dietary recall records would be needed. Data collection could be improved by using
a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) or a diet history interview that asks for usual intakes of iodine
containing foods. FFQ are more often used and preferred as they are more cost effective.
A major problem with dietary surveys is the likelihood of under reporting, where the participant either
changes their dietary behaviour because of survey participation or misrepresents their consumption to
appear healthier.2 It must also be considered that most young children are unable to recall their
intakes. Similarly, parents/carers of school aged children may not be aware of a child s total food
intake, which can lead to under reporting.

The modern day forensics now and then were a lot different. Crime Scene Investigation,

My hypothesis suggests that the largest impact on age related positivity effect is an individual that
encountered more challenges throughout their lives. When individuals work for their successes,
overcome obstacles and learn to cope with adversity, they have an opportunity to learn invaluable
lessons of perseverance. Aware of attention restoration theory (ART) that theorizes cognitively,
individuals naturally are stimulated by either negative or positive stimuli (Berman, Jonides, Kaplan,
2008). ART is based on research, examining the separation of attention into two fundamental areas:
involuntary attention, where ones attention is drawn to their natural positive or negative stimuli
(Berman, Jonides, Kaplan, 2008). The secondary occurs when your attention is captured by something
intriguing to your personal sensibilities, some stimuli that challenges your natural cognitive thought
pattern (Berman, Jonides, Kaplan, 2008). Therefore, theorizing individuals that encounter few
adversities within the first one third of their lives, lack the opportunity to learn challenging coping
skills, thus, leaving these individuals with a personal deficit when forced to endure hardships and
calamities in the later stages of their lives (Berman, Jonides, Kaplan, 2008). Once again, these factors

Since they had to satisfy the domestic obligations, the banks have so far been confined within the
Indian borders. Banking in India originated in the last decades of the 18th century. The first banks
were The General Bank of India, which started in 1786, and Bank of Hindustan, which started in
1770; both are now defunct. The oldest bank in existence in India is the State Bank of India, which

Nora s Transformation Essay

the intentions of Nora, and describe her as a despicable and selfish woman; however, I see her as a
courageous and selfless woman, who longs to be treated as an equal to men. Nora s sacrifice for her
husband at the beginning unravels throughout the entirety of the play, and reveals a boundless

Safak explains this deeper by saying, Nora demonstrates her strength in the last act of the play and she
distinguishes herself from the other members of her gender, who follow a mob mentality in the
general frame of the traditional woman perception (Safak 144). Nora did something for herself that
would have been unspeakable in her time of living during 1879. Women were supposed to be
dependent on a man for safety, security, and money, which Nora relied heavily on in the beginning of
the play. Now, she ventures out of the normal comfort zone of ladies and states, No, that s exactly it.
You don t understand me. And I ve never understood you either until tonight. No, don t interrupt. You
can just listen to what I have to say. We re closing out accounts, Torvald (Isben 866). This bold
decision to move on with her life, without the help of a man, is respectable and courageous of Nora.
From the beginning to the end of the play, Nora expresses reliance on others to self reliance. She
became a self sufficient woman, which she had been practicing with throughout the play while she
worked tirelessly to pay back the loan taken out for Torvald. Perhaps she panned her departure from
the opening of the play because she knew what the outcome would be. At last, she freed herself from

The Ambiguity of Shakespeare s Ambiguous Hamlet
Ambiguity of Hamlet
In Shakespeare s dramatic tragedy Hamlet, the reader finds ambiguity of one type and another here
and there throughout the play. The protagonist himself is an especially ambiguous character is his own
rite.
Harold Bloom in the Introduction to Modern Critical Interpretations: Hamlet expounds on the
ambiguity and mysterious conduct of the hero during the final act:
When Horatio responds that Claudius will hear shortly from, presumably that Rosencrantz and
Guildenstern have been executed, Hamlet rather ambiguously [my italics] makes what might be read
as a final vow of revenge:

His first soliloquy illustrates the hero s idealism by emphasizing the worthlessness of the corrupt

The first soliloquy ends with the arrival of Horatio, the hero s closest friend ( Horatio, thou art e en as
just a man / As e er my conversation coped withal. ), and Marcellus, who escort the prince to the
ramparts of Elsinore to view the ghost of Hamlet s father, King Hamlet, which they have seen. At one

prior to the murder; the ghost requests revenge by Hamlet: Revenge his foul and most unnatural

not one. Her sheer ruthlessness has been brought to light. In Queen Herod , Duffy also makes
references to friendship and sisterhood. The black Queen scooped out my breast, this quote shows that
women are willing to help each other in their times of need.
The traditional qualities of a wife are subverted in Medusa . Duffy presents Medusa as a woman who
has been engulfed by jealousy, caused by her adulterous husband. My brides breath soured stank in the
grey bags of my lungs. This quote displays that Medusa was once young and beautiful, but as a result
of marriage has become hideous. This contrasts with the character of Stella in A Streetcar Named
Desire , who is a devoted and loving wife despite the way Stanley behaves towards her. He didn t

American Environmental Movement
Have you ever caught yourself criticizing a littered area of your favorite park? Or cringed at the bitter
taste of an apple s skin, due to heavy pesticides? Like you, many Americans began to socially
denounce the mistreatment of their natural world, thus sweeping an environmental movement across
the United States. The modern environmentalist ideas that help safe guard the nature in our everyday
world have grown into a hugely adopted cultural movement through decades of research and
persuasion. Its influence on America and other parts of the world vastly differs from society to society,
however, the fundamental ideas seem to remain concrete through time.
The American environmental movement holds itself in high esteem both in the common individual
opinion, and its literal definition. The environmental movement describes the attempt to purify and
conserve natural resources. This fundamental movement bore its beginnings in rough times for the
U.S., as certain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many counterclaims enter human thought, including, exaggeration of facts, content, the idea of hidden
truths about our environment, and laziness. For example, in 1983, researches released their fears of
ozone degeneration and looked into both the reality and causes. Because of some faulty information
and controversial data, many citizens disregarded the warning and made no efforts to increase fuel
friendliness. Ignoring the threat also allowed every day people the ease and capital provision of using
more harmful gases in their machines and vehicles. However, in May of 1985, an article was released,
confirming the ozone hole over the Antarctic. People throughout America began to drastically increase
the concept Going Green . The effects of concern, followed by research, followed by a call to action,
have created a much more conservative culture in America. However, we are not a perfect people and
both doubt and laziness in association with environment purification will continue to

The lyrics say, I m going to show him what a little girls are made of/ Gunpowder and lead (Lambert).
She is saying she is made of gunpowder and lead when it is not actually possible. What she means by
this is that he might be very strong and made of muscle, but her gun is stronger than him. If he tries to
abuse her again, then she will use her gun to defend herself. She might not want to do that, because its
not the right thing to do. Although, it is for her safety. She is warning him that if he keeps hurting little
girls , then one of them will use her gun in defence

Texas Legislature Philosophy
In the United States of America, the Republican Party is the party that promotes limited government
involvement when it comes to the business aspects of government; however, when it comes to an
individual s personal life, rights and beliefs, the Republican Party s philosophy of limited government
is hypocritical in some aspects. Nevertheless, in the business world, Texas Legislature philosophy
advocates for the civil liberties of its people, believing that everyone deserves the opportunity to excel
in their State with limited government interference. Furthermore, Texas Legislature philosophy
advocates limited government that works on an as needed basis. Case in point, the Texas Legislature

Jc Penney Marketing Analysis
JC Penney Case Study MBA 503 March 28, 2013 Background JC Penney is one of only a handful of
one hundred year old plus companies in the United States. Founded in 1902 by James Cash Penney,
the company has grown into a major retailer, with 1,104 stores and approximately 116,000 employees
as of February 2013. The company sells merchandise and services through its department stores and
website, jcp.com. Their product mix includes clothing and shoes, accessories, jewelry, home
furnishings and beauty products. In addition, they provide services such as styling salons and portrait
studios. James Cash Penney founded the company on the Golden Rule; treat others the way you want
to be treated. That strategy worked well for them over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The expansion of their in store Sephora locations will hopefully lead to additional impulse buys in
other areas of the store. Also there is room in niche markets underserved by their competitors, such as
big and tall clothing and maternity wear. Finally, there is ample room for the company to expand
internet sales not only in the United States but also internationally. Threats What threats does JC
Penney not face? They are in an uphill battle against a crowd of competing retailers. They are
attempting to offer low everyday prices which put them in line with bargain retailers such as Kohl s,
and Target, while at the same time attempting to become a more classy, higher end store along the
lines of Macy s, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdales. JC Penney views all these companies as competitors
as seen in their own proxy statement. JC Penney is not as large as some of its competitors, many of
which have more substantial resources and are constantly attacking their market share. The company
also faces threats from economic conditions, such as high unemployment and the recent recession.
When consumers are under financial pressures can easily decide to shop elsewhere, such as Kohl s,
Target, and even the dreaded Walmart. Even the perception of better value can drive consumers
elsewhere. Also, shopping mall popularity is shrinking, with some retailers focusing on and consumers
preferring stand alone locations similar to Kohl s. Over the

I had consumed a vast quantity of these nutrients during my three day period.
Keeping in range your micronutrient is very important, the range provides a guide to a well balanced
nutrition in which you should not exceed the recommended ratios in order not to create excess energy
in thus converting to fat. The lack of micronutrients is also important to keep in mind. Lack of these
nutrients can cause malnutrition that can lead to disease complexity disorder and long term damage to
your organs.
If you constantly eat too little protein you will start to lose muscle complexity due to that proteins are
the building blocks of muscle. If you deprive yourself of proteins and there is a lack of energy your
body will start taking energy from your muscles. If you consume too little carbohydrates you re
depriving yourself of necessary nutrients in whole grain foods and vegetables, some of the
consequences are digestive difficulties, decreased energy and heart disease.
When you eat too few lipids sources in your diet, you may not get enough essential fatty acids, which
could cause problems with your hair, skin, immune system and vision. Eating too little fat may also
lower your blood levels of HDL, or good cholesterol, raising your risk of cardiovascular problems and
stroke (ADA, 2011).My fiber intake did not reach the one hundred percent that is recommended to me
in my DRI. My intake was too low since I only

The Environmental Impact Skiing On The Environment
The environmental impact skiing has as a whole on the environment has been a growing concern for
some time now. Resorts especially have taken specific notice to their carbon foot print, and actions to
reduce it. Several companies have taken this trend of going green and established themselves as the go
to people for whatever their service/product may be. In large, the snow sports industry has stepped up
their game with sustainability practices in hopes of leaving the world as they found it years ago. One
slope side lighting company called Arctic Beam has developed a futuristic looking LED lighting
solution that can cut energy usage in half for a typical ski resort. Although slope lighting is not a big
issue for many ski resorts, the ones who offer night skiing can benefit tremendously. By reducing
energy use by half and ski resort can now invest that half into other sustainable projects and further
their steps to becoming an environmentally friendly resort. These lights also reduce light pollution by
having a 120 degree angle of light and ability to concentrate the beam to certain areas. Compared to
the usual gas light bulbs used today whose light direction is 360 degrees with little control over where
the light can be directed. The difference is remarkable with visibility as well. The Arctic Beam puts
out light which can be registered more readily by the human eye then light emitted by the gas bulbs.
This creates a safer skiing and riding zone by increasing typical night

Music Censorship
Although is clearly states in the first amendment that Congress shall make no law respecting an
establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,
or of the press; or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the government for a
redress of grievances, censorship in America still exists in a big way. Music censorship is the term
used to describe the act of editing, altering, or preventing the listener from hearing the music as the
artist created it in order to either deny certain information or to act as a moral gatekeeper of potentially
harmful material
(http://www.cwrl.utexas.edu/~barndollar/courses/spring98/students/fabfive/index.html). The

Consequently, approximately 1,400 stores dropped the album. Many major retailers such as
Woolworth s and K mart will not purchase, and therefore not display, an album with any kind of
parental advisory sticker on it. While it is true that legally these labels do not prohibit sales to anyone,
the labels amount to an elegant form of censorship, elegant because it is censorship made to look like
consumer information. (1) As controversial as records like Ice T and other artists who use either
swears or sexually explicit material are, artistic pieces no matter what kink of message they send, or
however unpopular they may be, are still protected by the first amendment to the constitution. The
people who vote for and pass the laws prohibiting free speech are taking it upon themselves what they
think is moral and right for the rest of the country. I feel I can make up my own mind about what type
of music I listen to, how about you? One organization claiming to protect the children is the Parents
Music Resource Center. At the center of the music labeling controversy, the P.M.R.C., feels that
current levels of violence, racism, brutality towards women, drug and alcohol glamorization in music,
lyrics, videos and stage shows need to be addressed through public discussion and debate (Hull 23).
The P.M.R.C. hopes to prohibit the sale of records to minors that contain lyrics about sex, drugs and
alcohol, murder or suicide (Weinfeld 46). If that were the case, even the bible may be

The Book Of Genesis Essay
The book of Genesis is all about one thing; creation. God within the book is known as a creator and
ruler of the universe in which he shows a supreme level of authority. Moreover, he is responsible for
many things such as sky, land, living creatures, and vegetation. With him creating many things that
surround the world, he speaks of making his own image in which he wants to create humankind. He
then creates a man and a woman known as Adam Eve. With Adam Eve spending time together, they
are told not to eat off of the trees that surround them. Meanwhile, Eve was told that if she did eat off
the tree that she would not be punished, and shares the special tree fruit with Adam in which they
immediately feel shamed. Likewise, God figures out ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

What Is The Difference Between Chili s And Tggi Friday

Arguments Against Pseudonyms
The ever increasing amount of people utilizing the internet as a means of communication has led to
many interesting phenomena. One that can be easily observed on many online forums is the use of
pseudonyms instead of actual names. The ability to utilize pseudonyms when creating online profiles
allows people to protect their identities, enabling them to freely voice their opinions without fear of
retaliation. When browsing through online comment sections and social media, it is common to come
across people writing under pseudonyms. The reasons for using an alias can be many; while there are
people that utilize online anonymity as a way of shielding their personal life from internet backlash,
others choose to abuse anonymity in order to spew ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the article Online Anonymity Protects Marginalized Groups, the author argues that online
anonymity is used by marginalized groups to preserve their privacy. The venues the author refers to
are the social networks Facebook and Google Plus, which have real name policies that forbid the use
of pseudonyms (Boyd, par. 7). The author attempts to answer if said policies protect users or if they
increase user vulnerability. She states that the stakeholders in this issue are those most affected by
prohibiting pseudonyms and nicknames, the vulnerable and marginalized members of society such as
abuse survivors, activists, LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender] people, women, and young
people (Boyd, par. 3). The values attached to the issue are those of safety, as people often utilize
pseudonyms to preserve their physical and mental health, as well as that of their families (Boyd, par.
2). Boyd is against the enforcement of real name policies because it exposes those who need
protection, arguing that you don t guarantee safety by stopping people from using pseudonyms, but
you do undermine people s safety by doing so (Boyd, par. 11). The author concludes that enforcing
real names policies in online spaces is an abuse of power (Boyd, par. 12). The solution she presents is
simply not enforcing real name

Marina Abramovic Analysis

overcome many obstacles and made some choices that have caused conflicts in the world of modern
art. Abramovic was known to cause conflicts among conversations when it came to topics in Art. She s
known to speak her mind which causes issues within the public. The Artist is Present is an HBO
documentary that highlights some of Abramovic s works. The documentary follows her journey in art
and proved how she had managed to change the view of how people looked at performance art. She
created unique performances that helped to show how humans respond to no boundaries, or how men

The purpose of these performances is to create something that provokes the audience as well provide a
deep insight into humanity. Examples of work which challenged her audience include Rhythm 0,
where Abramovic allowed the public to use any of the 72 objects she provided against her and she
would do nothing. In this particular experiment, Abramovic showed how with the risk of
consequences, people have no limits, she experienced violence at the hands of these complete
strangers as they cut her, tore her clothes and tested her resolution by aiming a pistol at her head. The
experiment also demonstrated how people often objectify the female body, as Abramovic did not
protest to the things done to her, people treated her as a plaything. Abramovic s work often doesn t
have one specific purpose, as said in chapter three of Connect Art No doubt, every person setting out
to name the most important themes in art would produce a different list. Similarly, participants in
Abramovic s performances might walk away with completely different emotions, some confused,
dismissive, even angry. While others might get a sense that they were touched by her mystical,

  • 2. The Repressions Of Women In Le Morte DArthur By Thomas Malory The impressions of women throughout history influenced the way authors depicted women in their works. The belief that women are the cause of men s problems dates back to the bible s first chapter. The chapter lead men to believe the ultimate fall of humanity was at the hands of a woman. Consequently, this belief has been carried from generations to generations throughout history. The legend of Morgan Le Fay changes behaviorally from evil and spiteful in Le Morte D Arthur by Thomas Malory to kind and nourishing in Avalon from Vita Merlin by Geoffrey of Monmouth because of the different notions of women throughout history. During the Middle Ages women went from being their father s daughters to their husband s wives to their children s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Certain individuals decided to change their beliefs. Some began to see women as nurturing creatures rather than the bane of all of man s existence. This idea reflects in the poem by Geoffrey of Monmouth, Avalon from the Vita Merlini . This poem tells the tale of a beautiful island where nine sisters live. The sisters are generous and kind to all who visit their home. The poem then shifts focus to Morgan Le Fay, almost bragging that she may cure sick bodies (Geoffrey of Monmouth). This differs from the Middle Age text greatly. Even the tone of the poem is light and airy in contrast to the dark and mysterious tone of the earlier story. The poem goes on to tell a story of Morgan Le Fay saving someone, explaining she saved a man that had gone into battle with her own honorable hand (Geoffrey of Monmouth). This man was her half brother Arthur, and whether the characters know of their relation is a mystery to the audience. In the poem Morgan Le Fay saves her brother; in the story she nearly kills him. It is clear the narrator of the poem admires Morgan Le Fay, as shown by the use of word honorable to describe her on many occasions. The depiction of the women in this story reflects how some people felt toward women in the Modern Ages, and once again turning life into art. Art imitates life in these two works. The societal beliefs of the Middle Ages were prominently against women having any power, though there are always some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. My Hero A Hero What does make a hero a hero? Is it there looks? Alternatively, maybe is it their personality? However, the question is what are those essential qualities that make one a hero? Different people require different heroes to look up to or try to emulate. However, whoever it may be, they all possess certain qualities. My hero is my mother, for the reason that she is selfless, compassion, and courage. That kind of selflessness can often be premeditated, since concentrating on others needs often winds up helping one accomplish one s own goals. However, a heroic leader does so without any anticipation of a return. The display and concern show the care one has for others. This can often apparent itself in strong but gentle actions planned to increase the lives of others. Courage and bravery come to mind first when we think of heroism. However, it is difficult to achieve anything truly heroic unless one is up against overwhelming chances. As Nelson Mandela put it, Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. These minor acts of heroism rarely attract any notice. A true hero is always sympathetic, benevolent and shows a great deal of compassion and sympathy to those poorly or in agony. He or she keeps away judgements; that are oriented to the self and embraces an attitude that serves others. Selflessness is an extremely important heroic trait, maybe the uppermost important. It is the driving force behind heroism. Heroes become heroes when they do something for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Dante s Accomplishments Dante Alighieri was an italian poet and philosopher who is known worldwide for his masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, which details Dante s journey through purgatory, hell, and paradise or heaven. The Comedy represents the christian idea of fate, and the soul s journey towards god, and is widely considered the greatest piece of literature ever composed in the italian language. He wrote several other great works, including Convivio (The Banquet), La Vita Nuova (The New Life), and De Vulgari Eloquentia (on the eloquence of vernacular). He is widely considered the father of the italian language, and many have likened Dante s literary achievements to those of Shakespeare. • 5. The Velocity And Wave Speed Velocity: In reference to waves, the velocity can be described as the distance a point on the wave, for example the crest, moves or shifts in a given period of time. This means that the velocity or wave speed, is the metres the wave travels per second. A wave may have a high frequency, vibrating back and back, but can still have a low velocity. Hence, a wave can be moving back and forth with a low frequency and still have a velocity. Therefore we can get the equation v = λ/T or v = f λ. Wavelength: The wavelength is the distance from one point on a wave to the same point on the next wave along. We can measure the wavelength of a wave from one peak of a wave to another. One wave length can be seen or described as the distance between to peaks or troughs of a wave. Equation v = d/T therefore... d = v x T (m) Behaviour of the waves Reflection: This is when a wave approaches the boundary between two mediums, when this happens a part of the wave undergoes reflection across the boundary. The amount of reflection from the wave depends on the variation of the two mediums. Sound waves reflecting off surfaces can lead to two different wave occurrences, either an echo or a reverberation. Reverberation usually happens in a room with a particular height, width and length of roughly 17 meters. This sound wave which the human brain receives barely lasts for more than a minute fraction of a second; the human brain stored a particular sound in memory for up to 0.1 seconds. When the ... During my master s degree at Villanova University, I conducted an experimental research under the supervision of Dr. Jens O.M. Karlsson at Biothermal Sciences Laboratory . In this NSF funded research position, I designed, built, and optimized different types of glass capillary microfluidic devices, and utilized them for producing micro emulsions. Subsequently, these micro emulsions were used for investigating ice nucleation and crystallization in supercooled ultrapure water, for which I used high speed imaging technique in conjunction with a powerful optical microscope and a cryo stage. Figure 4 is a micrograph taken from one such video. Needless to mention, the knowledge gained from these experiments can open new doors to understanding mechanisms of damage in cells and tissue due to preservation at cryo temperatures. • 8. Tourism Effects on Machu Picchu High in the Andean mountain range, nestled on a ridge between two mountains high above the valley floor below sits the amazing city and archaeological site of Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is about 1400 kilometers south of the Equator on the eastern slope of the Peruvian Andes. The site lies near the head waters of the Amazon River and is on the ridge between two prominent mountain peaks – Machu Picchu and Hauyna Picchu – about 500 meters above the valley bottom (Wright and Kenneth, 2 3). Machu Picchu, believed to be the royal estate of the Inca ruler Pachacuti, is the most well known of all the Inca archaeological sites. Professor Hiram Bingham discovered the site in July of 1911 and excavated it with the help of National Geographic and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is also the impending problem that with the increase of tourism in Machu Picchu there will also be an increase in the crowding and congestion on the roads, footpaths, and in the narrow streets of the site. In addition, tourists also compete with residents for available services and facilities (a prime example of this is the local train service in Peru, in which many backpackers tend to use the local train service rather than the much more luxurious and expensive tourist train). An increase in visitors to the area will also lead to an increase in the crime in the area. Finally, a big social/community impact from tourism has been the desecration of burial sites and the removal and display of human remains from Machu Picchu to further stimulate the tourist industry, which has ultimately led to the destruction of the Indian spiritual heritage. (Barcelona Field Studies Centre S.L., Machu Picchu: Impact of Tourism) Environmental Costs and Benefits The environmental costs to increased tourism to Machu Picchu out number the benefits in many ways. Environmentally, tourism does help to facilitate increased awareness of the need for conservation and preservation of natural, cultural, and historical resources. Machu Picchu could also be considered a clean industry, but that might be asking a lot when one looks at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Humans have long abandoned the idea of completely colonizing Mars. Instead, they have decided to build outposts in space much like the European explorers in the 16th century, on route to China for trade to protect the motherland s trade route from enemies and refuel ships. About 10 years ago, scientists began building an outpost on Mars a few miles from Gale Crater. Robots are maintaining the facility, but their hands are not quite suited for wiring the base. Thus, NASA deemed it necessary to send humans to Mars to get the base running for future missions on an improved version of NASA s Orion spacecraft. The Orion spacecraft ... • 11. Franz Lieber and the Lieber Code Franz Lieber and the Lieber Code In the midst of the deadliest war in American History, there stood a voice of morality and reason on the United States soil. Franz Lieber, a German political philosopher, created a series of political works in which he explained the importance of defining ethical boundaries for soldiers in times of war. In 1863, President Lincoln commissioned Lieber to create a series of laws to reflect his ideas ( Francis Lieber, 2013). Lieber went on to create what became known as Lieber s code, which was history s first attempt to distill, formalize, and systematize various general concepts that international law, at the time, considered proper restraints for the combatants towards each other and towards civilians (Forbes, 1985). But what effect did the code have on the Civil War and the preceding time period? Created at an important juncture in history, Lieber s code not only had a profound effect on the views of controversies during the Civil War, but also influenced the way the world viewed the ethical obligations of military personnel during times of war. Civil War Prisons Throughout the Civil War, prisoners of war were abundant and thus a popular topic of debate. This likely influenced Lieber s ideas as to what was important to include in the code, leading to much of Lieber s code entailing the treatment and exchange of prisoners of war. Early in the war prisoners received equal treatment from both sides. However the lack of a systematic programs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In early September 1939 the Nazis horribly destroyed the routine of daily life in Warsaw. The city was physically ruined, including many of the zoo s buildings, shelters, and cages. Many of the innocent animals died in the bombings and the Nazi soldiers savagely murdered those who survived when they went on a fun killing spree. This caused the famous zoo to become a destroyed shadow of its former self. Through the fear and terror of the war, Antonina was able to provide some clam and peacefulness to her guests and family (Ackerman 2007). A specific incident that was truly horrific was when Nazi soldiers threaten to murder all the people living in the villa. The soldiers ordered everyone to stand and a straight line, as they pointed their guns at them. At the time, Antonia was pregnant with her second child and she could barley keep her balance. The soldiers took the Fox Man s fifteen year old helper behind the shed and a shot was fired. The soldiers then came back and indicated that Ryś was next. Ryś followed the Nazi behind the shed and another shot was heard. Antonina was in complete shock as devastation overcame her. Then all of a sudden, the Nazis told the boys to come out with the dead chicken. It turns out this was a game played by the soldiers in order to frighten the family. This horrific game shows the truly evil intentions of the Nazi soldiers, and the physical and emotion torture they caused their victims (Ackerman 2007). Unfortunately in July 1942, the Nazis began liquidating the Warsaw Ghetto by shipping hundreds of thousands of Jews to the death camp Treblinka. The war raged on, but by the following June a true miracle had occurred. Antonia gave birth to her daughter Teresa, who was a blessing and ray of hope amongst so much terror, cruelty, and death. • 14. The Effect Of Alkaline Phosphatase On Para... A SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC ASSAY OF THE ACTIVITY OF ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE ON PARA NITROPHENYLPHOSPHATE IN THE PRODUCTION OF PARA NITROPHENOL M. Smit1 1 Department of Biological Sciences, University of Cape Town, Rondebosch Introduction: Alkaline phosphatase is a biologically important enzyme, catalysing the hydrolysis of phosphate groups in organic compounds through the process of dephosphorylation. para Nitrophenylphosphate (pPNP) is an example of a chromogenic substrate of this enzyme, because the product of hydrolysis of pPNP is the yellow para nitrophenol (pNP) compound along with inorganic phosphate (McComb, Bowers and Posen, 1979). The Michaelis Menten equation for enzyme kinetics (Murray, 2002) predicts an initially high rate of enzyme activity as the concentration of the substrate is relatively high, followed by a gradual reduction in enzyme activity as the substrate is consumed. The enzyme alkaline phosphatase is also known to be subject to competitive inhibition by inorganic phosphates via the formation of the phospho enzyme, thus blocking the active site to pPNP for dephosphorylation (Kim and Wyckoff, 1991). The enzyme kinetics of alkaline phosphatase on this chemogenic substrate is the focus of this study, in an attempt to determine the trend in the rate at which pNP concentration changes over time and the impact of a high concentration of the inorganic phosphate product on enzyme activity. It is hypothesised that the rate of enzyme activity will initially be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Emotions Of Creon In Antigone By Sophocles Throughout the play Antigone by Sophocles, Antigone does not have one main motivation, but rather a blend of many. As Antigone s three most evident motives are doing the right thing, flouting Creon s authority, and expressing her overall anger at life, the first and the last are most important. In this play, the combination of Antigone s emotions toward her grave past and her obligation to her brother, regarding the gods, fuses together to be the incentive for her actions, regardless of Creon. Challenging Creon is almost a side effect, a medium through which Antigone can achieve her goals. Antigone s past is a messy one: an incestual and murderous curse put on her family, her mother s suicide, her father s self mutilation and banishment, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, in Antigone s conversation with Ismene, she reveals more of her motivations. Antigone s anger is carried over, but the reader is also introduced to a budding grief. She states that Creon has no right to keep [her] from [her] own (59). The fact that Polynices is her brother is enough to for Antigone to justify her actions against the law. The tone of this statement feels like a grief stricken plea, to do what is right for her brother. She loves him, and he deserves to be buried. Antigone then mentions that Creon and everyone who refuses to bury Polynices is dishonor[ing] the laws the gods hold in honor (91 92). For Antigone to then act against everyone, would, therefore, be the right thing, in terms of religious beliefs. For someone other than Antigone this might be sufficient enough motivation, but since she is so complex it is only a factor. A thoughtful, rational person probably wouldn t be so quick to jump into a decision that would inevitably lead them to their death, even if that decision was the right one. Since Antigone is so upset with her life, she doesn t care if she lives or dies, if the past is any indication of her future, only more pain will come. This is what makes her do the right thing. Antigone believes burying her brother is right, and that the laws of the gods must be obeyed, so it is a factor, but since she actually takes action and buries him, she throws her life away. ... Several studies already showed that plants exhibit local adaptation to their sympatric environment (Howe et al., 2003; Savolainen et al., 2007; Leimu and Fischer, 2008; Salmela, 2014). We hypothesized that if A. arenaria shows evidence of local adaptation, we expect the plants of the experimental site, and closely related ones, to have a greater performance than allopatric populations (Vander Mijnsbrugge et al., 2010). Results indicated an increase in survival with increasing distance from the study site in the first phase of the experiment. In the second phase, the relation between survival and distance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, we did not see an effect of the origin of the plants on the condition, so we cannot completely confirm this theory. Also, since the relation between the distance and survival was positive, we cannot say we confirmed the theory of local adaptation. In our analysis, we used geographic distance as a measure for the differentiation between the various populations. In most cases, environmental distance is the best way to study population divergence ( Joshi et al., 2001; Bischoff et al., 2006; Leimu and Fischer, 2008; Bischoff and Tremulot, 2011). This implies that populations that are close to each other but very dissimilar can differ a lot more from each other than populations that are more distant but more similar (Bischoff et al., 2006). In Leimu and Fisher (2008) they stated that geographical distance is only a good measure if it is correlated with environmental distance, where the latter can be an important selective agent for local adaptation. By this, the results could be different with the use of the environmental distance. Also, the experimental plants were in the field during autumn and winter, implying that aboveground herbivores were largely absent. It is demonstrated that also aboveground herbivores can act as selective forces in plant populations, since these herbivores can have strong negative effects on the plant fitness (Jarosz and Davelos, 1995; Abdala Roberts and Marquis, 2007; Arany et al., 2009). Anne Moody s Coming Of Age Essay HIST278 Essay One Joseph Malthus, 42863655 Anne Moody s Coming of Age in Mississippi is a story of a black girl growing up in the American Deep South during the development of the Civil Rights Movement. Moody notices the racism that envelops her life and attempts to understand why it exists, despite the absence of reasonable grounding. Suffocating under the restrictions and fear caused by systematic racism, she ultimately decides to become an activist, and takes an active role in demanding equality and a better life for Black Americans. Moody s childhood was riddled with incidents where white people imposed their superiority and control over her and other blacks. She sought to understand why American society was structured this way. Moody first begins thinking about this after she is forced away from her friends in a segregated cinema. While her friends were allowed to sit in the main atrium to watch the film, Moody and her family were forced to use a separate entrance and sit behind them on a balcony. Moody noticed that her friends whiteness meant they were treated better, but at her age she could not understand why their skin tone made them better than her: why their whiteness provided them with a pass to downstairs in that nice section and [her] blackness sent [her] to the balcony .1 She became determined to discover what made whites more deserving of better homes and schools compared to those which blacks were consigned to. • 23. Summary Of Giorgio Agamben s Homo Sacer Giorgio Agamben s book Homo Sacer begins by addressing the topics of bare life and meaningful socially contextualized life in relation to the philosophical terms of zoē and bios respectively. Agamben toys with the idea that sovereignty naturally coincides with bios, whereas zoē is only included in politics in the form of exception. (Agamben 10) This assertion runs parralel to the idea of atavism, which is essentially the principle that humans can often revert to primal and ancestral behaviors when left unchecked by society. This reversion is generally regarded as a violent and undesirable; philsophers such as Hobbes would certainly feel that atavism is partially responsible for the life of man being solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short, which is a core thematic component of his work Leviathan. (Hobbes 78) Despite Agamben and Hobbes s shared notion that primitive behaviors fall outside the natural sphere of politics and are relatively negative, there is a strong case to be made for atavism s role in positive human sociopolitical structures. One such positive instance is familial structures. Although the concept of sovereignty can be expressed through the father figure and paternal subjugation, and the concept of bare life can be established philosphically by the figure of the mother and an individual s birth, it it nontheless true that human beings seek out families and attempt to live in concordance with their parents , siblings , and childrens needs and desires ... During this period, Turkish harem women wore clothes most similar to ours. They wore cloaks over their chemise and loose trousers while also being veiled (Olsen 59). This era marked conservatism in women s clothes. During the first wave movement, fashion did not become dynamic until the 1900s. In 1851, dress reformers tried to popularize a pair of baggy pants beneath a knee length tunic (Olsen 125). Although this effort was unsuccessful, it marks the beginning of dress reform and sixty five years later, hem lengths would rise by ten inches (Olsen 177). The 1920s marked the era of the flappers, when the use of makeup became commonplace and women wore knee length dresses and bared more skin (Olsen 207, 214). A few decades after, pants would be allowed, introducing scandalous shorts along with it. Although heavily criticized, the stigma of shorts lessened, showing us more familiar styles. Dress reform went full force in this era. Fashion during the second wave feminism was marked the increase of more comfortable clothing. Women were primarily working in factories for the war effort, so their dress was consisted mainly of pants and high collared shirts []. You can tell this by looking at the beginning, and seeing how the narrator was so happy when his brother was born. • 37. Nora s Transformation Essay Throughout the dramatic play titled A Doll House , Henrik Ibsen s creation of the character Nora changes immensely from the beginning to the end of the work. Some people may argue and question the intentions of Nora, and describe her as a despicable and selfish woman; however, I see her as a courageous and selfless woman, who longs to be treated as an equal to men. Nora s sacrifice for her husband at the beginning unravels throughout the entirety of the play, and reveals a boundless transformation of Nora into strong woman, who thrives off of the idea of becoming an equal, self sufficient lady as she makes the brave decision to leave her family to better herself. Safak explains this deeper by saying, Nora demonstrates her strength in the last act of the play and she distinguishes herself from the other members of her gender, who follow a mob mentality in the general frame of the traditional woman perception (Safak 144). Nora did something for herself that would have been unspeakable in her time of living during 1879. Women were supposed to be dependent on a man for safety, security, and money, which Nora relied heavily on in the beginning of the play. Now, she ventures out of the normal comfort zone of ladies and states, No, that s exactly it. You don t understand me. And I ve never understood you either until tonight. No, don t interrupt. You can just listen to what I have to say. We re closing out accounts, Torvald (Isben 866). This bold decision to move on with her life, without the help of a man, is respectable and courageous of Nora. From the beginning to the end of the play, Nora expresses reliance on others to self reliance. She became a self sufficient woman, which she had been practicing with throughout the play while she worked tirelessly to pay back the loan taken out for Torvald. Perhaps she panned her departure from the opening of the play because she knew what the outcome would be. At last, she freed herself from the caged Doll House and became a strong, independent ... The Ambiguity of Shakespeare s Ambiguous Hamlet Ambiguity of Hamlet In Shakespeare s dramatic tragedy Hamlet, the reader finds ambiguity of one type and another here and there throughout the play. The protagonist himself is an especially ambiguous character is his own rite. Harold Bloom in the Introduction to Modern Critical Interpretations: Hamlet expounds on the ambiguity and mysterious conduct of the hero during the final act: When Horatio responds that Claudius will hear shortly from, presumably that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern have been executed, Hamlet rather ambiguously [my italics] makes what might be read as a final vow of revenge: It will be short. Explore the similarities and differences in the presentation of female characters in A Streetcar Named Desire and The World s wife In this essay, I will be exploring the similarities and differences of female characters in A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams; and The World s Wife by Carol Ann Duffy. Both texts denote women as somewhat weak and incompetent and as having a predatory attitude towards the mainly dominant male characters. A Streetcar Named Desire was written in 1945 and it initially connected with America s new found taste for realism following the Great Depression and World War II. William s based the character of Blanche on his sister who was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Williams himself was homosexual, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reader is able to see the role of a female friend. In this case Eunice supports Stella through the difficult time. This is similar to Queen Herod as in the poem, Duffy shows her as having a lack of sense when it comes down to her baby daughter. Kill each mother s son. Do it. Spare not one. Her sheer ruthlessness has been brought to light. In Queen Herod , Duffy also makes references to friendship and sisterhood. Duffy presents Medusa as a woman who has been engulfed by jealousy, caused by her adulterous husband. My brides breath soured stank in the grey bags of my lungs.
